Maria Sittel and Vladislav Borodinov will perform at the Eurovision Dance Contest
On September 1, London will host the first ever Eurovision Dance Contest. Our country at this tournament will be represented by the winners of the project "Dancing with the Stars", which was shown last season on the channel "Russia", Maria Sittel and Vladislav Borodinov. The judge of the international category, the co-host of the competition from Russia, Stanislav Popov, spoke about the upcoming event in an interview with the RG correspondent.
Rossiyskaya Gazeta : Has anything really like this ever been done?
Stanislav Popov : Yes, this tournament will be held for the first time in the world. It was created by analogy with the Eurovision music contest. The idea of such an event comes from the BBC, and initially it was a show "Dancing with the Stars", which has become popular in many countries.
WP : How is the tournament different from the musical Eurovision?
Popov: The general concept of the competition is similar, except that not singers will compete in it, but ballroom dancers. Each couple representing their country will demonstrate two one and a half minute dances: one from the ballroom Latin program (Argentine tango, cha-cha-cha, foxtrot, jive, paso doble, quickstep, rumba, salsa, samba, tango, Viennese waltz, waltz) and one free-style dance that encourages the use of national features.
WP : How is the membership determined?
Popov : Each case is different - the organizers leave it to the discretion of the country the dancers represent. Some states on the European arena will be represented by the winners of the national competitions "Dancing with the Stars", in others the participants were determined by the national dance federations.
WP : Do you think it is possible to learn to dance professionally in such a short period of time?
Popov : With a certain talent, you can prepare several compositions under the guidance of a good choreographer. Moreover, it is not worth comparing the pro competitions and the upcoming tournament. Here all the numbers will be set based on the location of the cameras, good angles.
WP : What can you say about our competitors?
Popov : Participants from 16 countries will compete for the victory. Approximately half of them are professional athletes or an amateur and professional couple. In other cases - the stars of popular TV shows who won the competition in their homeland. For example, the UK will be represented by Camilla Dallerup and Brandon Cole, a very famous dance couple who have taken part in professional tournaments more than once. In particular, they performed several times as part of the "World Cup" in the Kremlin.
WP : Do Maria and Vlad have a chance to win?
Popov : I think so, considering the dances they are going to perform. This is Rumba and Gypsy. They will perform the last composition to the music from the film "Cruel Romance". The choreography is being prepared by Viktor Nikovsky, a former four-time finalist of the European Championships in Latin American dances. But still, the winners are chosen not by professional arbitrators, but by viewers.
WP : How will the winner be determined?
Popov : TV viewers will appreciate the overall impression - dance, choreography, costumes and choice of music. An expert commentary will help them with this, in which the performance and its artistic component will be described. For Russia, the competition will be commented by actress Anastasia Zavorotnyuk and your obedient servant. Voting will be carried out in a format similar to Junior Eurovision and will start from the very beginning of the show, the lines will be open throughout all performances until the end of the last showing of their fragments. You can vote by phone or SMS. And you can't vote for your own country. The hosts from each participating country will announce the scores from 1 to 12 live. After 30 minutes, the winner will be announced.
WP : Recently, many people have become interested in dancing. What is it connected with?
Popov : Probably with a lifestyle. Our society is changing, people want to dress beautifully, look and move. Freedom of movement in many ways gives a person emancipation in making vital decisions, and simply in communication, because everything is interconnected. In addition, dancing is a great way to keep yourself in good shape not on a boring treadmill, but in a pleasant company.
Anna Chernyaeva - jury member in the "Choreography" nomination Press Center of the Orbita Talents Foundation
Anna Chernyaeva - artistic director, choreographer and choreographer of the Gzhel STYLE dance theater the best ways to develop a harmonious personality of a child, and also share some tips for choosing a choreographer.
Anna Chernyaeva, artistic director, choreographer and choreographer of the Gzhel STYLE dance theater, told us why dancing is one of the best ways to develop a child's harmonious personality, and also shared some tips for choosing a choreographer.
Anna, why did you decide to connect your life with dancing?
For me, the word dance has many meanings. Firstly, it is harmony: with your own inner world, with others, and secondly, dance is life. And thirdly, dance is a dream! Today, many boys and girls dream of learning to dance professionally. Dancing for me is life itself. From early childhood, dancing and sports have been a part of my life, I am a CCM in sports acrobatics. I tried my hand at different types of choreography: ballroom dancing, variety dancing, folk dancing, stylized dancing, and this experience was useful to me in my professional work as a choreographer.
What is your personal formula for success as a dancer and teacher?
First of all, the support of parents. Despite the fact that they worked hard, mom and dad always supported all my undertakings: they came to competitions, concerts, found an opportunity to send me to competitions and festivals, invested in costumes and props for performances. I sincerely thank them for this, because without their attention and support, I would not have been able to take place as a person and as a teacher. This is what I always tell parents today: the most important thing is to support your child, help him, respond to all his undertakings, in my opinion, even after a while this rule is the main thing in raising children.
Tell us about your creative path as a dancer.
My concert activity began in early childhood, mostly it was city and regional competitions. Our city is a millionaire, there are quite a lot of cultural centers in it, so city competitions usually gathered a huge number of participants. The most vivid memories of competitive life are connected with trips to Moscow and St. Petersburg, our team achieved good results at these competitions - we took the Grand Prix. In my childhood, due to the difficult political situation, we were limited in the choice of various creative competitions and festivals, but still, every appearance on the stage was a real holiday. The adrenaline that you get before going on stage and meeting the audience, before presenting yourself in public, never lets go. That is why a child who has performed on stage at least once does not want to give it up in the future.
Where did you learn to dance professionally?
It so happened that in high school I had to leave dancing classes for a while due to lack of time, it was difficult to give 100% to the cause and at the same time still have time to prepare for entering the university. It's time to think about the question “Who do I want to become?”, I honestly admit that the understanding came almost immediately: I liked hanging out with children younger than me, I came up with entertainment for them, and most importantly, the children were drawn to me. It was for this reason that the world of child psychology fascinated me, and I entered and chose the profession of a psychologist, enrolling in a pedagogical university. I graduated with a red diploma, after working in a rehabilitation center with difficult children, but, being a psychologist at this institution, I staged choreographic numbers with children, we performed at city and regional competitions. So, I can say that creativity never let me go. And after several years of my creative searches, I realized that dancing is the work of my whole life. She graduated from the choreographic department of the Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky with honors.
Anna, you are truly amazing! Is this your inner perfectionism?
I believe that a real teacher should be like this: to bring any started business to the end and do it efficiently, otherwise it’s not even worth taking on. In the hands of educators there is such a delicate tool - a child's emerging personality, we have no right to work poorly. We must work in such a way that our children can take an example from us.
Is a higher choreographic education necessary for someone who wants to become a true professional in the dance field?
I am sure that yes, only in the process of learning can you understand what it means to “work”. It is higher education (and the whole path that you go through in the learning process) that gives a clear idea of whether you can devote your whole life to dancing. Higher choreographic education is not only practice, it is also theory, the history of dance styles, dance culture. Moreover, the university will help determine the further development and answer the question “who do I want to become”: a professional ballet dancer, choreographer, director, director of a children's dance school. It is important to note that since 2019a new standard is being introduced in Russia, now it will be impossible to conduct teaching activities without a specialized dance education.
Some parents think that dancing is not serious. How to convince them otherwise?
Yes, such a trend does exist. But I declare with confidence that during the performance of a 3-minute dance number, 90% of the child’s brain is involved, all mental processes work at the same time: this is movement coordination, work on emotions, work of muscles, musculoskeletal system and much more. It is also undeniable that among the dancers there are never stupid people, for example, our famous dancer Nikolai Tsiskaridze, an unusually smart, versatile person, and at the same time a great dancer. And there are many such examples. You should not use the argument that this profession is not practical, try to impose a different path on the child. The most important thing is to love your job and become a professional in it, and not just a person of a profession who hardly sits out a working day. Give your child the opportunity to realize himself in his favorite business, listen to his desires and aspirations, and then he will become a professional with a capital letter.
What difficulties can a beginner dancer face?
Of course, this is healthy competition: there are a lot of talented, hard-working, enthusiastic guys around you, and you need to always be on a par with them and even one step ahead, becoming better every day. And it is important to argue not with others, but with yourself: today you are not sitting on the left split, but tomorrow you are sitting, the day after tomorrow you are on the left split with sagging, you work only on yourself, getting better every day. This is the main commandment in any business, and young dancers, unfortunately, are trying to compete with others, harboring resentment against the coach and competitor in the workshop when they are not approved for a role in a dance number. It is important to learn how to overcome difficulties (learn yourself and teach your child) - do not give in to them, do not run away from them, do not shift responsibility to others if something does not work out, but correctly assess the situation and develop, improve yourself. The most important thing is to teach children to lose, then they will know the joy of victory.
Where can you earn as a professional dancer?
Today, the possibilities for this are very large! For example, professional dance groups of theaters, ballets and other cultural institutions, whose members receive wages for performances and preparation for them. In addition, these are various show ballets, dance duets and groups that can perform at events of various levels, from municipal to corporate. A professional dancer can become a teacher in a children's group, in a house of culture or a school, or he can open his own dance studio. Again, the possibilities today are endless, dancing is very popular among children and young people.
How did you decide to create a dance group?
I immediately knew that I would have my own team. After finishing my professional career as a dancer, I realized that I wanted to teach children. Seeing them on stage, rejoicing in their success, sharing their knowledge and experience - this is what brings me a feeling of boundless joy. It is a special pleasure to watch the dedication of the children on the stage, and the hall with incredible warmth and involvement accepts the performance. This is happiness for me! Already when I worked as a choreographer and tutor, I was able to put together the backbone of my team: many children have been with me since the age of 5. At that moment, when I realized that my potential, ambitions and strength were enough to open and lead a dance group, I did it and announced the enrollment of children for the new school year. We have recruited a huge team and are now actively working. Of course, we faced various difficulties, but thanks to the cohesion of the team of teachers, parents and children, we were able to cope with everything, we became a real friendly team. Today, our team is quite valuable in the city, we are invited to speak at various municipal events, and this, of course, is a high appreciation for our work.
Why did your team choose several styles at once, and not concentrate on one?
As I said earlier, as a child I was simultaneously engaged in several styles, it was this experience that proved to me that a person can easily master several dance styles. When choosing a style for our team, I did not limit the children, organically fitting several styles into our schedule. Of course, it is easier to choose one style, to create a narrowly focused team, for example, working in the jazz-modern style. But to make an acrobat, a ballerina and a populist out of a child is a completely different level, which not every teacher can do. This is our main advantage - we give all children a chance to realize themselves, while we do not limit the choice, the child chooses the direction that is closer to him. Plus, in our studio, the child will definitely never be bored, we do not have a routine, every day is a new lesson, a new impetus for development.
How to identify the child's ability to practice choreography?
Physiology is a very important aspect for the world of dance, unfortunately, it is impossible to argue with nature. The teacher at the very beginning has a great responsibility, even when viewing the child. In our team, a casting is taking place, during which we check the sense of rhythm, the features of the musculoskeletal system, muscles and their elasticity, plasticity. Of course, all this can be developed, but in each case the timing is different. For example, someone easily stretches, sits on a twine, almost without feeling pain, someone with this process is much more difficult.
At what age is it best to send a child to choreography classes?
I would recommend the age of 4-5 years, when the child has already developed a sense of understanding of gender identity, self-criticism begins to turn on: what I can do and what I am not very good at. At this age, the child begins to have the ability to concentrate, which, of course, is one of the main ones at the stage of learning. It is much more difficult to start studying at primary school age or senior school age, and this situation is a psychological aspect. For example, if a child came to study for the first time at the age of 15, we cannot assign him to a group with kids. He will work with peers, with children who have been learning the intricacies of choreography for 10 years. In such a situation, the child will be internally uncomfortable, so I do not recommend starting professional dancing and going to appropriate educational institutions at a later age. It is better to choose studios that work in the so-called hobby classes, which involve development for themselves. Of course, there are exceptions, hardworking children, nuggets who achieve results with perseverance and diligence. But such children are the exception rather than the rule.
How to choose the right teacher or studio?
The teacher is the most important criterion when choosing a dance school. If you go for a specific dance direction, for example, for ballet, then you will have to accept a teacher who will teach the child. Whether he will be too strict and demanding or, conversely, loyal, it does not matter, you must accept his rules of the game. If the direction is not chosen, then I recommend starting from the personality of the teacher. To begin with, be sure to talk in person, find out about the professionalism of the teacher - talk to the parents whose children study with him, read information about the teacher's education, his regalia, read information about the creative team in which the teacher works, and his achievements with him. Be sure to get acquainted with the repertoire of the group, dance, performance costumes, musical accompaniment. If these two primary points do not cause you any questions, then you can continue to communicate, touching on the detailed information of training - cost, schedule, and so on.
Anna, what advice would you give to parents if they decide to send their child to choreography?
The first is the understanding that the result never comes immediately, it takes a lot and hard work to achieve it. There is no need to force events, during the period of the formation of the child's personality as a dancer, it is necessary to patiently wait and support your child, in this case it will be possible to prevent a situation of deceived expectations and disappointment. The second is the financial side of the issue. This issue is especially acute with the costume base, this issue always falls on the shoulders of parents. We know perfectly well that fabrics, decorative elements - all this is quite expensive today. When sending a child to a dance school, each parent must clearly understand whether he will be able to provide his child with a costume or not, what difficulties he will face and how he will overcome them. In addition to a suit, a training uniform and shoes are needed, trips to various professional competitions - financial issues in these matters are also decided by parents. Choreography, unfortunately, is expensive, this must be taken into account when choosing it as the main activity for a child.
Why should children take part in competitions?
Firstly, it gives a certain incentive for development, especially it depends on the level of competition in the competition and on the level of the competition itself. Secondly, it gives an assessment of the work and level of the child for himself, the teacher and parents. There are cases when a victory in some competition helped the child to be inspired again by classes, to find motivation for further development. Thirdly, preparation for competitions and the competitive performances themselves unite the team, children become more responsive, kinder, support each other before performances, sincerely congratulate and rejoice at victories. And, of course, each competition is an invaluable experience that makes a real professional out of a child.
How to psychologically prepare a child for the competition?
In this case, a tandem of a teacher and parents should work: it is necessary to set the children up to the fact that even participation, without a victory and a prize, is already a victory, primarily in professional growth. Any competition is an opportunity to look at other children, to see how they work, to peep something interesting.
How often should you enter competitions?
Once every 3 months - such a frequency will keep children in good shape, this is the best option that keeps the level of competitiveness of children at the same level, while at the same time high.
What will you choose: paid or free contests?
Our preference is commercial competitions, firstly, their level of organization is higher, and secondly, the very atmosphere of the competition is more attractive for children: a photo zone where you can take a memorable photo, photography, gifts, branded items, diplomas - all this is stored in memory in children.
Where to go to study to be a dancer?
There are a lot of colleges, schools, universities that have faculties of culture and art, for example, in Moscow and St. Petersburg. It all depends on the goal, today in our country there are no problems with obtaining higher choreographic education.
They say that a dancer cannot be realized in a small town. What do you think about this?
I believe that this is not entirely true, for example, in big cities the competition is incredibly high! To take place as a dancer in Moscow, you need to make tremendous efforts. In a small town, both the result and success will come faster, the most important thing is to be result-oriented, understand what you want and work hard to achieve success. It is important to be able to soberly assess yourself and your results: if you feel that you have the potential to leave, if you have reached all the heights in the place where you live, then you should think about moving. Otherwise, the idea is a failure.
What can you say to parents who still doubt whether to send their child to dancing?
We must try, dear parents! Choreography is the development of all aspects of the child's personality, physical health, the spirit of teamwork, the possibility of self-realization for the child.
