How to teach a dog to dance on its hind legs to music

not suitable for dogs with musculoskeletal problems
In this lesson we will look at how to teach a dog to dance on its hind legs, as part of two tricks - "Dance" and "Waltz". In both exercises the dog should stand on its hind legs with a straight back. The difference is that on the “Dance” command, the pet simply gets up, and on the “Waltz” command, it leans on the owner’s leg or another dog.
Choose which exercise you want to learn first and focus on practicing it. Move on to the second version of the trick only when the dog has fully mastered the first. Otherwise, it will confuse commands.
The content of the article
- “Dance” for small dogs
- “Dance” for medium dogs
- “Waltz” command
- Variations of tricks equilibrium. Large heavy dogs and those with spinal problems should avoid this trick.
“Dance” for small dogs
Small, active dogs often do this exercise on their own when begging for a tasty bite. If your pet is prone to this behavior, then do the following: take a treat in your hand and lift it above the dog, prompting him to stand up.
Encourage the dog to riseWhen the dog has been in the desired position for about 3 seconds, praise it and give it a treat. Repeat the exercise, gradually increasing the time the dog has to "dance". Say the voice command "Dance" when you see your pet is about to get up.
“Dance” for medium dogs
If you have a medium sized dog, it will take a little longer to train it. Sit your pet in the corner of the room so that his back touches the walls - this will help maintain balance. Now take the treat and lift it up so that the dog reaches for it and stands on its hind legs.
We sit the dog near the walls and show a treatMake sure that the pet gets up with a straight back, and if this is not the case, correct it. When the dog gets into the right position, wait a couple of seconds and reward.
Some dogs, when they dance for the first time, try to lean on the owner with their front paws. It's okay - help the dog by substituting your hand. However, gradually reduce the help and get the pet to do the exercise on its own.
Repeat the exercise 2 times a day for a few minutes , no more, because the dog needs time to develop muscles and learn to maintain balance. When the dog is confidently standing on its hind legs, take a couple of steps back and with the help of a treat make it come to you. Reward your dog for every step.
Over time, complicate the exercise - move the treat in different directions, describe circles. The dog should follow your piece, imitating a dance.
Waltz Command
To teach your dog to dance by putting his front paws on your leg or thigh, get him to stand up on his hind legs with a treat. Keep the treat close to your body so your dog has to lean on you as he reaches for the bite. When she gets into the right position, wait a couple of seconds, then reward. Practice the exercise several times.
The dog performs the “Waltz” commandThen start taking small steps back. Keep the treat within sight of the dog so that it continues to reach for it without taking its front paws off you. Praise your dog for each step at first, then increase the number of steps he has to take with you.
Trick Variations
- If you have a small dog, try teaching it to dance on a chair or ottoman.
- Tell the dog to "Waltz" while you gently rotate around your axis. The dog should either move in a circle with you, or remain in place, but periodically tear off its front paws from you.
- Teach your dog to dance from behind you as described in the Polonaise lesson.
- Combine the commands “Dance” and “Rotate” to make the dog rotate on its axis.
- Teach your pet to make small jumps while dancing. To do this, command "Up" when the dog is dancing.
- Build a small cart and have your pet dance on it. Then begin to slowly move the cart with the dog dancing on it. Do this very carefully so as not to frighten the animal.

Teaching a dog the trick "Turnover"
90,000 in Blagoveshchensk, four-legged animals are taught to move to music — Amurskaya Pravda Society0002 “We don't know how to dance yet, but we are happy to take pictures. Lira, as soon as she hears the click of the camera shutter, immediately freezes and assumes a pose,” says Natalia Salyaeva about her border collie breed dog. For several months now, the girl has been actively engaged in freestyle dancing with a dog with her pet. Five-month-old Lyra is taught by her hostess to perform various tricks and move rhythmically to the music. To date, Natalia is the only freestyle specialist in the Amur Region, and quite recently she recruited a group of people who want to learn this discipline. So far it has only been done once. What dogs love to dance the most, how freestyle differs from Needlework to Music and why a dachshund cannot do a “bunny” - in the AP material.Cynologist himself
The first dog - Denis of the Belgian Shepherd breed - appeared in the family of the Blagoveshchensk young artist Natalya Salyaeva four years ago. The townswoman decided to teach her pet how to train her pet on her own and began to browse the Internet in search of practical exercises. One day she came across a video of the master of sports in dancing with dogs, a Moscow coach and participant in the World and European Freestyle Championships, Polina Ilyina. In the video, a Malinois dog, along with the owner, performed intricate tricks.
“I also wanted to dance with my dog, and I started to study with Denis and learn the movements,” amateur dog breeder Natalya Salyaeva shared with the AP. - Then we went to a couple of freestyle competitions, where we won prizes. I traveled several times to cynological seminars and training in Vladivostok and Moscow.
For a nimble and active dog, groovy music is needed, and for a calm dog, the measured rhythms of the Viennese waltz are also suitable.
Self-training was easy and fast - the dog grasped everything on the fly and fulfilled all the ideas of the hostess with pleasure. In training, Natalya used food and a clicker - this small box with a clicking plate helped them to better understand each other and become a single whole. Today, Denis can perform about 100 commands without a reward in the form of a treat, and there are already five dances in his repertoire.
Everyone is dancing!
Dance-training begins with learning elementary tricks: “to me”, “lie down”, “stand”, “give me a paw”, walking backwards and others. Therefore, according to the girl, it is best if the future star of the dance floor has already completed a general obedience course - such animals learn new material faster, and show better results at events. The ideal age to start trick training is six months. “First, we are engaged in order to achieve contact between the person and the owner,” Natalia tells the principle of her work. “Then we work out the clarity of the elements, then we teach how to work at a remote distance. And the very last stage - we enter the learned elements into the music.
Music is one of the main components of dance. She is selected according to the temperament of the dog. For example, for a nimble and active, groovy music is needed, but for a calm dog, the measured rhythms of the Viennese waltz are also suitable.
- Initially, I break the music into seconds, words, sentences or lines, and for each segment in the song, the dog learns to perform a certain command, for example, when the music rises, it raises its paws, and when it falls, it crawls, - an amateur trainer shares secrets. - We select both foreign music and Russian - here the performer is not important. The main thing is to reveal the theme of the dance. It is necessary not only to do tricks and bow to the audience at the end, but to play a small performance with a clear line and idea.
Who is the best dancer?
In a two-minute dance, on average, there are about 30 elements, which are mixed or replaced each time they enter the stage. A wide variety of dog breeds can participate in freestyle, but Papillons, Russells and Border Collies are considered the most talented. The latter are easily trained, active and will perform any movements with pleasure. And for example, German Shepherds, because of their mass and sluggishness, dance heavily. With a dachshund, it is also convenient to make a movement next to the music, but she cannot make a “bunny”: because of their long body, they have a fragile spine. Therefore, all movements and the dance itself are selected individually, taking into account the physiological characteristics of the breed and the temperament of the dog.
Dancing in two months
Last year, for the first time, several freestyle classes were held under the auspices of one of the Blagoveshchensk dog breeding clubs. This year, only three owners came to the first lesson with their pets. In Blagoveshchensk, demonstration performances of dancing with dogs can be seen at some cynological exhibitions - dancing numbers with animals require space and certain conditions.
- First of all, there are a number of requirements for such performances, - explains Blagoveshchenka. - For example, the dance floor should have a soft surface: grass, carpet, sand, not concrete or wood. But the most important thing for a good dance is contact, the perfect combination of dog and owner. Unfortunately, Amur residents are not interested in such training - it is easier for them to just go to regular exhibitions.
By the way, a city dweller is ready to teach dog pas at least two or three months in advance. Today's students do more for themselves, to entertain the dog on a walk, but Natalia is sure that if necessary, she will be able to prepare the animal for serious freestyle competitions.
Natalia's second dog, Lyra, a Border Collie breed, is still at the initial stage of training. She has been studying for only three months, but during this time she managed to master about 15 commands. It takes about a week to learn and consolidate one team. The amateur dog breeder does not yet know what music Lira will perform her first dance to, but without a doubt it will be an energetic and very cheerful melody.
All life is dogs
Natalya Salyaeva, in addition to training dogs, is also engaged in drawing and photography: a girl draws animals from photos and professionally takes pictures of dogs. Her drawings, based on portraits of furry pets, are popular and can be found in various Russian cities. “I really enjoy working with dogs,” the artist admits. - All their emotions are visible in the face. And it just inspires and charges with positive and energy.”
Certificate AP
Dancing with dogs includes two disciplines: freestyle (free movement to music) and Needlework to Music (movement side by side to music). The latter suggests that the dog and the person move synchronously with maximum concentration and endurance. This discipline is much more difficult than freestyle, because the dog must work from a partner at a distance of 10-20 meters.
