I was recently introduced to the “dougie.” I know, I’m incredibly behind the times, apparently…I’m sorry! Pop culture is HARD, okay!?
My friend and I were driving listening to ATL radio when he suddenly turned down the radio, turned to me and asked: “Steven. What’s the dougie?” Me: “……the fuck?” Friend: “Yeah, I know…but I’ve heard it in like, 3 different songs now. And they keep asking someone to teach them how to dougie.”
According to urbandictionary.com, the term “dougie” can refer to a number of things:
1. “Swag, Swagger originated in Dallas”

“The term ‘dougie’ derives from the name of 80’s early 90’s Hip Hopper Doug-E- Fresh. The term ‘dougie’ means to have a cool or hip stlye.” [sic]

Okay…so from what I can gather. It was a term made in reference to a very specific motion/mannerism of an 80’s rapper named Doug E Fresh…which was then applied to sex with a female…and then somehow morphed into somebody’s style (aka swagger aka steez)…and finally turned into a dance now popularized by a group called the Cali Swag District.
I tried explaining this to my friend at his behest…only to realize after a few seconds that, still, neither of us had the slightest notion of what it quite meant. But that didn’t stop us from seeking more information. And one thing was for damn sure: I wanted to fucking learn how to dougie. However, given my general lack of swag/steez/dougie, I knew this would be difficult. I had to find a model demonstrator with the perfect combination of awkwardness, swagger, and uncoordination to match my abilities as a dancer.

And then just when my luck was running out and I thought that I would never find a suitable tutorial to teach myself the dougie dance…I found someone whose moves I could follow.
