Milo Manheim (‘Dancing with the Stars’): Youngest Male Winner Ever?

Milo Manheim is the youngest celebrity competing in season 27 of “Dancing with the Stars.” He’s 17, so I wonder if he just missed the cutoff for “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors.” He starred in the 2018 Disney Channel movie “Zombies,” and he’s the son of Emmy-winning actress Camryn Manheim (“The Practice”). But can he dance? Before he enters the ballroom on September 24, let’s weigh the pros and cons.
PROS
Manheim is musically inclined, appearing in a stage production titled “Generation Me” at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2017. He also has experience playing guitar, drums and piano. So the musicality of dancing may come more naturally to him than it does to other celebs.
The young actor is also athletically inclined: he enjoys volleyball, football and soccer. So he should be able to keep up with the grueling “DWTS” training regimen.
His pro partner is Witney Carson, who is 24 so there’s no awkwardly large age difference between them that might affect their ability to connect with each other on the dance floor. Carson has also had success with former child stars, winning the Mirror Ball with Alfonso Ribeiro in season 19 and reaching the finals with Frankie Muniz in season 25.
CONS
Besides “Zombies,” Manheim doesn’t have many acting credits yet, so he may not have an established fan base he can rely on to vote for him. And the fans he does have may skew a lot younger than likely “DWTS” viewers. The same problems may have led to the downfall of fellow Disney Channel star Jake T. Austin, who was the first celeb eliminated in season 23.
The youngest male winner in “DWTS” history was Jordan Fisher, who was 23 when he prevailed a year ago in season 25. A few teenage girls have won the Mirror Ball Trophy over the years (Shawn Johnson, Bindi Irwin and Laurie Hernandez), but no teenage boys have. Will he have the maturity and stage presence to lead his pro partner confidently across the dance floor?

Milo Manheim would be youngest male Dancing with the Stars winner

Age is just a number, and Milo Manheim might prove that adage true again. The 17-year-old is one of the frontrunners to win “Dancing with the Stars” and would in turn become the show’s youngest male champ ever.
The “Zombies” star, who has the second highest average score this season, would break the record currently held by Jordan Fisher, then 23 when he took home the Mirrorball trophy in Season 25. Fisher had ended the 21-season, 10-and-a-half-year reign of Apolo Anton Ohno, who won Season 4 on his 25th birthday.

Manheim, who was 4 when “Dancing” premiered in 2005, would also be the first male teenager to win. Not unlike the Oscars, younger women have fared better on “Dancing” than younger men, resulting in three female teen champs. Laurie Hernandez, the youngest overall winner, was 16 when she won Season 23, dethroning fellow Olympic gymnastics champ Shawn Johnson, who was 17 when she edged out Gilles Marini in Season 8. Bindi Irwin was also 17 when triumphed in Season 21. To be fair, “Dancing” has cast more female teens (Zendaya was 16; Bethany Mota turned 19 during Season 19; Sadie Robertson, 17; Willow Shields, 14) than male teens (Cody Linley was 18; Kyle Massey, 19; Cody Simpson, 17; Hayes Grier, 15).
“Dancing” has an even split of 13 female winners and 13 male winners through 26 seasons. The women’s average age at the time of their wins is 28.3; the men, 32.8. The three female teen champs notwithstanding, most winners were in their 20s and 30s; six women and six men have won in their 20s — and the twentysomething men have a younger average — while three women and five men have won in their 30s. Alfonso Ribeiro, who was 43, is the only man to prevail in his 40s, but no woman has. The oldest female and male winners were in their 50s: Jennifer Grey, who was 50, and Donny Osmond, then 51.
