Songfacts®:
The Black Kids hail from Jacksonville, Florida and consist of Reggie Youngblood, (guitar, vocals), Ali Youngblood (keyboards, vocals), Dawn Watley (keyboards, vocals), Owen Holmes (bass) and Kevin Snow (drums). This was their debut single and it was originally found on their 2007 self-released EP Wizard Of Ahhhs.
In this song Reggie Youngblood is mocking a girl's boyfriend with "two left feet," all the while worrying that he's nothing without his superior moves. He explained to the Guardian newspaper: "I like that about human nature. That you can think the world of yourself one moment and then the next you're a cowardly, awkward, sniveling piece of s--t. It's all there lurking and it's so random what's going to come to the forefront. "
Reggie Youngblood explained to Vice magazine the background to this track: "Well, Jacksonville is a sort of anomaly, in that despite being a somewhat culturally bereft city, we have amazing dance parties at which we dance like motherfu--ers. So, in this environment, I've repeatedly found myself in situations where girls love to dance with me ('cause I can move, baby) but usually go home with someone else, who can't dance for s--t. It's a problem."
In the same Vice magazine interview, Youngblood explained the band's name: "It is REALLY hard to come up with a name that hasn't been taken. You think of something you like, Google it, and sure enough, someone's beat you to it. So, we thought, we really must have something that most people won't touch. And it should sound cool. I find it hilarious when someone black asks Owen or Kevin (who are both white) what band they play in, because they're not quite comfortable saying it aloud. If I'm with them, I just keep very quiet and relish the awkwardness. "

Just a coincidence The best music albums of 2008: Culture: Lenta.ru
Music lovers every year diligently scouring in search of new beautiful sounds, from which you can then make a personal beautiful hit parade and surprise friends, colleagues and like-minded people.
Lately, however, there is nothing particularly surprising. In the 2000s (and even earlier), music moves in a vicious circle. All these nu-raves, dubsteps or drones are just derivatives of old, time-tested musical styles. Really new ideas have not arisen for a long time. (If this happens, we will definitely inform you.)
But stop. There is no reason to be sad. There will always be music that gives birth to emotion ; the one that will entertain and make you dance, shock and provoke reflection, elevate or plunge you into the abyss. All this was enough in 2008.
Not going to lag behind advanced music lovers, we offer a rating of the very best artists, whose names, in our opinion, 2008 will be inscribed in musical history. We do not plan to surprise anyone in particular; these are the people who come to mind first, the ones we truly love. Each of them is a prize-winner in a nomination specially invented for him.
It's funny that many of the rating participants do not shun nudity (see disc covers). It's not really on purpose, it just happened.
Only stars above us
Lenta. ru
Let's start with the most successful disc of the year - "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends". British band Coldplay's fourth LP sold like hotcakes in 2008, topped the charts in 36 countries, won Album of the Year at the World Music Awards and received seven Grammy nominations (and it's very likely that all of them will win) .
Such success and exemplary correctness of "Long live life" with the famous "Liberty Leading the People" by Eugene Delacroix on the cover, in principle, should stir up. But to argue with this smart and interesting pop music, which has become such not least thanks to the legendary producer Brian Eno, there is no longer any strength. Viva Coldplay! Keep in mind that this claims to be their (apparently already in the past) fierce and consistent hater.
I'm a monument to myself
Nick Cave has come a long way from the outcast and troublemaker of The Birthday Party gang to the peaceful singer of life and deserved pride of Australia. All the more beautiful and unexpected was the 14th album of his band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!", on which he produced top-notch rock-n-roll, breathing youth and anger. What's nice, "Lazar" did not do without a "signature" ballad, in this case "Hold on to Yourself", which the musician traditionally turns out to be beyond praise.
Not so long ago, breaking away from the fight of the throat, writing books, scripts and drawing pictures, Cave set about to erect a monument to himself in his native Varraknabil in the form of a half-naked horseman. It will be for you, Nikolai Kolinovich, consider that at least 14 have already been erected, let them not be riders!
Rock baby dolls, champions
Lenta.ru
It so happened that one of the three best records of the year in Russian was recorded by a group from Belarus. "Manifest" "Lyapis Trubetskoy" is not just a powerful album, but a natural punk anthem, to which exemplary and quiet middle managers in the midst of a crisis tear their last shirt on their chests (checked, I saw it at a concert).
In general, the current "lyapis" are a collective of the same order as Shnura's grouping. Only where "Leningrad" achieves its base, animal plots, "Lyapis Trubetskoy" manages to philosophize and give out the harsh truth of life. Read, by the way, if not already, Sergei Mikhalok's interview with Lenta.Ru readers, he says a lot of the right things.
Young punks
Lenta.ru
The traditional "Debut" - it is one of two nominations, where surprisingly serious competition stood out. In 2008, the wonderful (yes!) Black Kids flashed with songs like "I'm not going to teach your boyfriend to dance with you" and "I underestimated my charm (Again)", which managed to be noted by as many as two records Los Campesinos !, talented (at least and Jesus and Mary Chain epigones) Glasvegas shoegazers, furious disco nerds and math-rockers (from the word "mathematics", not "Sergey Shnurov") Foals, by no means hopeless Ra Ra Riot and (most importantly!) The best duet of the year The Last Shadow Puppets, made up of vocalists Arctic Monkeys and The Rascals.
But the palm is still given to infantile New Yorkers Vampire Weekend , with which the whole of 2008, in fact, began. Their self-titled debut album is packed full of bright and festive hits (references to Talking Heads' "African" experiences) like "Oxford Comma", "A-Punk", "Mansard Roof" and of course "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa". Peter Gabriel, mentioned in the chorus of the last song, of course, could not pass by and has already recorded a cover on it with the band Hot Chip.
You will listen anyway
Lenta.ru
Call him pop, blame him for whatever you want. You will listen anyway, I know for sure. With unceremonious and obscene, but very biting and precise phrases, rock rapper (or rap rocker?) Noize MC cut his way into the Russian show business. His first album, peremptorily titled The Greatest Hits Vol. 1 is perceived as such, without letting go for a second.
Ivan Alekseev captivates, first of all, with his sincerity: he will not show off to anyone and will remain himself in any situation. And even if it turns out to be just a witty PR stunt or a successful invention of the record company, what cannot be taken away from the guy for sure is his brilliant mastery of freestyle techniques ("what I see, I sing about"), which is why his songs never sound twice the same. Again, tested in action. Oh yes, and the promised full-length nudity!
Eurovision will help us
Lenta.ru
Dear Dima Bilan! Thank you very much for fulfilling the dream of millions (?) Russians and, personally from me, for the new album Sigur Ros . The guys said that they watched the Eurovision final with your participation, after which their brains were fried so much that they wrote the song "Gobbledigook". If you have heard this composition and their previous works, you will understand that they did not lie about the brains.
Dima, wave to your mother, thanks to you the Sigurs recorded their brightest and most joyful album "Med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust" and even finally arrived in Moscow. And I can assure you, Dima, it was no worse than Eurovision.
Robert Smith - 2008
It's no secret to any music lover with ears, that today's youth with guitars in general is very fond of participating in the competition "Who is more like The Cure?". This year the competition did not take place due to the entry of Robert Smith himself with the album "4:13 Dream" and the subsequent early finish of all potential applicants.
Of course, Robert Smith loses his flair a little and stays off the air for a criminally long time, but he is still quite capable of such well-aimed hits as "Underneath The Stars", "The Only One" and "The Perfect Boy". Let's not prevaricate, from an extra portion The Cure we will never refuse. Even if she got a little windy.
Speaking of contests. Young people seem to have a new fun - to be actively inspired by David Bowie. Listen, for example, to the latest records of The Killers, Keane or The Last Shadow Puppets. Be vigilant, Comrade Smith!
We are strong in our craft
Lenta. ru
Inexplicably one more time blowing on the sawmill, according to Paisiy Pchelnik, the white horse on the grass went far into the field, while pansies and ladybugs spoke quotes from Disney for ninety days and ninety nights : "What shall we do with the drunken sailor?". But if you cry for a long time, then it is quite possible to walk in Albanian on the walls, lanterns, ceilings, along with a girl with an oar. You have listened to the summary of the new album Boris Grebenshchikov and the group "Aquarium" "White Horse".
But seriously, I don't know about you, but with us any BG album is an event. Especially one as solid and light (as opposed to the cover) as this one. Yes, on occasion we arranged an online conference of the maestro with readers, but due to the celebratory busyness of the Aquarium leader, it came out a little crumpled. We will definitely repeat. You don't mind, Boris Borisovich, do you?
I need your comebacks the most
Lenta.ru
Second nomination with mega competition. It is understandable; all these returns through years of oblivion since 2007 have been going in shoals. What can I say, even if the great and terrible Axel Rose released "Chinese Democracy". Or, for example, the wonderful tandem David Byrne - Brian Eno, who recorded 27 (!) years later the second joint album "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today".
All this is no doubt great, but perhaps the sweetest and most reverent revival was made by trip-hop magicians from Bristol Portishead . The difference between their new album "Third" and the first two records (reference works, to some extent characterizing the sound and mood of the entire 1990s) was 11 years. Nostalgic expectation (with caution, but will they be able to repeat it ?!) was rewarded with 11 new songs. Arithmetic, to be sure, is not the most pleasant, but at least simple.
Zeitgeist
Lenta.ru
If you ask how 2008 sounded after all, then I will answer without hesitation: "Like TV on the radio" - and I will put on the record "Dear Science".
