General Information
On this page, you will find out how you can improve at playing Subtlety Rogue in World of Warcraft — Dragonflight 10.0.2. We list the common mistakes that you should try to avoid and the small details that can greatly improve your performance.
TABLE OF CONTENTS OF THIS PAGE
1.
Overcapping Resources
Since all of Subtlety's damage is tied to resources, it is important to waste as little of them as possible. You should make sure you do not find yourself being Energy capped or casting Combo Point generating abilities when at maximum Combo Points.
2.
Pooling Energy
Pooling Energy has been a vital part of optimal Subtlety gameplay for a long time now. Often players tend to go into Shadow Dance without enough Energy which makes them unable to get the maximum amount of globals in the short burst window. Since Subtlety revolves around these burst windows, you want to make sure you get most out of them.
You should aim to have at least 60 Energy and use Symbols of Death instantly to get close to the Energy cap when going into Shadow Dance burst windows.
3.
Using Cooldowns Together
You should always use Shadow Dance, Symbols of Death, your Covenant ability and Shuriken Tornado, if talented, together. Never use Shadow Dance unless you are about to cap on charges or can combo it with Symbols of Death.
4.
Knowing How To Sim Yourself
It is impossible to correctly play and optimize a Subtlety Rogue without using Raidbots to sim your own character, there are simply too many variables involved to intuitively figure out what gear to wear and so on without simming it first. Generally speaking, a simulation should be the first and final say in the gear you end up wearing for any given situation.
On top of this, simming is now very easy with no need to understand SimulationCraft APLs or installation yourself. All you will need is the in-game SimulationCraft AddOn, and the Raidbots website. Below you can find a video on how to sim your own character using the website.
5.
Analyzing Your Mistakes as a Subtlety Rogue
When it comes to identifying and improving your mistakes, we strongly recommend the website WoWAnalyzer — it will analyze your logs and give you a report detailing how you did on the problems above and more.

Method Subtlety Rogue Guide - Playstyle And Rotation
Playstyle & Rotation
General Rotation:
When you play with the Deeper Stratagem and Secret Stratagem talents, you will finish at 5 or more combo points, which also applies to all the finishers in the priority lists. However, it does not apply if you are playing Resounding Clarity and have charged combo points active.
Below I will list spells in a priority order to make it easier to understand the importance of certain parts of the gameplay loop for subtlety.
Danse Macabre + Dark Brew one Shadow Dance build
- Use Shadow Blades on cooldown
- Use Symbols of Death on cooldown
- Use Shadow Dance on cooldown with 0-1 combo points
- Cast Shadowstrike in Shadow Dance or from Vanish
- Cast Gloomblade as your first builder in Shadow Dance when playing The First Dance and whenever you’re not in Shadow Dance
- Cast Echoing Reprimand, only in Shadow Dance
- Cast Secret Technique, only in Shadow Dance
- Maintain and refresh Slice and Dice, do not use while in Shadow Dance
- Maintain and refresh Rupture, do not use while in Shadow Dance, it’s ok to refresh Rupture a few seconds before pandemic if it’s going to drop in Shadow Dance
- Cast Eviscerate
Danse Macabre + Dark Brew one Shadow Dance build
- Shadowstrike + Symbols of Death
- Rupture
- Shadow Blades
- Shadow Dance + Gloomblade
- Eviscerate
- Echoing Reprimand

- Eviscerate

Danse Macabre + Flagellation two Shadow Dance build

- Flagellation + Symbols of Death
- Rupture
- Shadow Dance + Gloomblade
- Eviscerate
- Shadowstrike
- Secret Technique
- Shadowstrike
- Eviscerate

- Shadowstrike
- Use Flagellation on a priority target on cooldown
- Use Shuriken Tornado on cooldown. Hold if you know there will be a 5+ target situation coming up shortly
- Use Secret Technique on cooldown but within Shadow Dance
- Use Symbols of Death on cooldown
- Use Shadow Blades on cooldown
- Cast Shuriken Storm when you are out of Shadow Dance
- Cast Shuriken Storm while you are in Shadow Dance if there are 3 or more targets nearby
- Cast Shadowstrike when in Shadow Dance, and you have Premeditation ready
- Maintain Rupture on all nearby targets if they live 14 seconds or more
- Maintain Slice and Dice on up to 6 targets
- Cast Black Powder if there are 3 or more targets nearby
Playstyle
Subtlety has two abilities affected by the pandemic timer (30% of the duration), Rupture and Slice and Dice. Most modern Weakaura packages come with a check for pandemic on these abilities, but if you do not have that, these are the timers:
- Rupture 8,4 seconds left (9,6 with 7 cp)
- Slice and Dice 12,4 seconds left (14,4 with 7 cp)
Survivability
In general, a Rogue is probably one of the most sturdy DPS classes in the game.
Playing around this fact is often underrated when it comes to DPS. We can do things that few other classes would get away with. Limit testing with Feint, Cloak of Shadows, and Cheat Death is one of the first things I do when testing bosses on PTR.
How much can you get away with before it becomes a problem for both healers and your life?
Movement
I won't say too much about this, but I will say that any good Subtlety rogue knows how to get the most out of Sprint and Shadowstep.
- Getting that extra melee or ability off before having to move by stepping a ranged DPS
- Sprint and gap close with Shadowstep
- Avoid knockbacks with Shadowstep
- Vanish (2 charges in Dragonflight) and Shadowstrike teleport

Greetings to everyone who has been waiting for this news! This winter, we, together with the leadership of WowCircle, will open a new game world and, perhaps, it's time to talk about it in more detail. Rogue in Legion
A while back, Blizzard told us about some of the changes coming to Legion's rogue trickery. The most attention then attracted the news that his role will be connected with the theme of the ninja, just as the robber is connected with the pirates. For now, these are changes.
