Girlfriend / Spouse

Mark Ballas has dated –

  1. Julianne Hough (2002–2004) – Mark and Julianne practically grew up together. They were registered as dance partners for 5 years in several junior dance competitions in the USA and UK and even started a band together. Although no concrete confirmation of their dating period is available, it won’t come off as a surprise in retrospect if Mark and Julianne dated each other when Julianne was still in her teens. They probably broke up after Julianne decided to return to the USA to finish her education. The two continue to remain good friends owing to Mark’s closeness with Julianne’s brother, Derek.
  2. Sabrina Bryan (2007–2009) – Mark met Sabrina in season 5 of Dancing with the Stars when he participated in the reality dance competition for the very first time and Sabrina was declared his celebrity partner. Since both of them were singers and dancers by profession with a hard-working, perfectionist attitude, they hit it off as soon as they were paired in the reality show. Their camaraderie set off speculation that the two were probably dating. But, it was their surprise exit that made them finish the show prematurely in 7th place that pushing them closer to each other. Heartbreak and shock caused by an early exit made Sabrina and Mark lean on each other for emotional support. They disclosed their newfound status as a couple to TV Guide but broke up in 2009.
  3. Joanna Pacitti (2008–2009) – Mark had a very public romance with former American Idol contestant Joanna. They met in North Carolina where Mark was training with season 6 celebrity partner Kristi Yamaguchi. During the initial months, Mark and Joanna spent a lot of time together despite Mark’s intense schedule and were frequently seen posing for pictures at various red carpet events. However, a year into dating, Mark saw a few professional setbacks that probably also affected his relationship. He confirmed his break-up by stating, “It just wasn’t working out.”
  4. Jeanine Mason (2010-2011) – Mark was frequently spotted by the paparazzi out on a date with So You Think You Can Dance winner, Jeanine Mason.
  5. Pia Toscano (2011) – The former American Idol contestant met Mark on the sets of Dancing with the Stars (2011) when she made a guest appearance on that show. They dated each other for 1 month before Pia decided to end the relationship, given their demanding work schedules. Mark disclosed the two parted on good terms without any hard feelings.
  6. Tiffany Dunn (2012) – Mark had a brief but very volatile, passionate, and public romance with pop singer and choreographer Tiffany Dunn. The two were frequently spotted hand in hand on the streets of Hollywood. Their romance quickly turned sour as their fights turned public as well. TMZ even reported that Tiffany happened to wreck Mark’s car. Although the couple reconciled, their relationship wasn’t meant to last.
  7. Eliana Girard (2012) – The paparazzi spotted Mark kissing and dancing with another So You Think You Can Dance winner, Eliana Girard at a Las Vegas nightclub. But it was speculated to be nothing more than a fling since the two of them were not heard of as a couple thereafter.
  8. Brittany Jean Carlson aka BC Jean (2012–Present) – Mark and Brittany saw each other perform at a singer/songwriter showcase before having a conversation at that fundraising concert which was organized by a mutual friend. Both of them were impressed by each other’s musical talent. Mark particularly found himself inspired by Brittany’s songwriting ability. 6 months after dating each other, Mark and Brittany went on a vacation to Jamaica and discovered an effortless musical collaboration as well. The ease in their relationship to work and play together led Mark to propose a day before Thanksgiving in November 2015 for which he decorated his driveway with roses and violets and the interior of his house with the Woodstock theme of the 60s / 70s. The couple got married on November 25, 2016, at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, California. They had an outdoor wedding with a bohemian theme. The bride wore a gown by Israeli designer, Idan Cohen.

  • 4 to 5 hours of daily dance rehearsals are more than enough cardio for Mark, so he primarily hits the gym to focus on strength training.

Derek Hough Biography. Early life. Way to success. "Dancing with the Stars", "World of Dances". Personal life.

Derek Hough spent ten years as a professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars before becoming a judge on World of Dance; he has also appeared in films, stage shows, and television productions.

Contents of the article

Who is Derek Hough?

Derek Hough was one of the professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars for several seasons from 2007 to 2016, winning the record six times with his celebrity partners. A talented choreographer, he has won two Emmy awards for his choreography on Dancing with the Stars. Derek Hough spent his teenage years in London where he perfected his skills as a ballroom and Latin American dancer; by the age of 18 he became the world champion in Latin American dances. He has toured with his younger sister, fellow dancer Julianne Hough, and has appeared in stage productions, films, and television shows, including as a judge on World of Dance. Hough also wrote a New York Times best-selling memoir, Taking the Lead: Lessons from a Life in Motion (2014).

Early life

Derek Hough was born May 17, 1985 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hough grew up in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints along with his three older sisters and younger sister Julianne. His parents, Mary Ann and Bruce, met on the college ballroom dance team; all his grandparents were also dancers.

Hough spoke openly about being bullied in Utah as a child. Describing his experience to People magazine in 2014, he said: “I got punched in the face and quite aggressively in the stomach. They tied me to trees and threw me into a field.” Hough also noted that he has since forgiven the perpetrators.

With the encouragement of their parents, Hough and Julianne began dancing together as children and continued to perform at schools and state fairs. When Hough was 13 years old, he and Julianne moved to London to attend the famous and demanding dance school Italia Conti Academy of Theater Arts (while in London Hough and Julianne lived with the family of fellow dancer Mark Ballas). This not only boosted their careers, but also provided a personal respite as Hough's parents were going through a divorce.

Dancing with the Stars

In 2007, Derek Hough became one of the pros in Dancing with the Stars in Season 5 (joining Julianne, who was already a professional dancer on the show). This job not only required Hough to teach celebrities how to perform dances such as rumba, tango, paso doble or jive, he had to choreograph various numbers. Hough has received several Emmy Award nominations in the choreography category for his work on the show, winning in 2013 and 2015. After a decade in which Hough became a six-time Mirrorball trophy winner along with various celebrity partners, he retired from Dancing with the Stars in 2016. Hough returned as referee at 29season.

Associates

In his first season of Dancing with the Stars, Hough collaborated with

actress Jennie Garth. The following year, he teamed up with American actress Shannon Elizabeth for Season 6 and Brooke Burke for Season 7; Burke and Hough won this season. In 2009, Hough worked with rapper Lil' Kim in season 8 and model Joanna Krupa in season 9. In 2010, Hough had back-to-back victories with singer Nicole Scherzinger in season 10 and dirty dancing star Jennifer Gray in season 11.

Hough was not in Season 12, but returned to dance with talk show host Ricky Lake in Season 13, 2011. In 2012, he partnered with Maria Menounos for season 14 and Olympic gymnast Sean Johnson for season 15. In 2013, Hough scored another back-to-back winning streak with country music star Kelly Pickler in Season 16 and Glee actress Amber Riley in Season 17.
Hough and Paralympian Amy Purdy impressed viewers in the 18th season of 2014; later that year he danced with YouTube star Bethany Mota at 19th season. His first partner in 2015 was gymnast Nastya Liukina in season 20; in Season 21, Hough won for the sixth time with his partner, conservationist and offspring of crocodile hunter Bindi Irvine. Hough danced with taxi actress Marylu Henner during Season 23, 2016.

Movies and TV appearances

Hough's film career includes both background work and a leading role.

Harry Potter

While living in England, young Hough appeared as an extra in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001). He portrayed a Hogwarts student who was in Ravenclaw; although he did not read the Harry Potter books, Hough chose to keep some of his costume and then later lost the items he had taken.

Take a Step Seize the Moment

In Take a Step Seize the Moment (2014), Hough and South Korean pop star BoA star as two dancers from different worlds who are drawn to each other. The film, originally titled Cobu 3D, was one of the reasons Hough was absent from the twelfth season of Dancing with the Stars.

Nashville, Hairspray Live!

Hough landed a direct dramatic role when he starred on the TV show Nashville as an actor who gets tangled up in Hayden Panettiere's character Juliet. And he had to sing when he impersonated Corny Collins for NBC's live music production of Hairspray Live! in December 2016. Hough also danced salsa with Gina Rodriguez in the fantasy "Jane the Virgin" sequence.

"Family Dance Off", "American Ninja Warrior"

Hough competed in the Family Dance Off in 2013 and in 2015 he joined Mark Ballas for an excellent Mark and Derek HGTV flip in which they worked together on renovating a house to make a profit by turning it over. Hough also featured on the acclaimed edition of American Ninja Warrior for NBC's annual Red Nose Day charity fundraiser.

World of Dance

In 2017, Hough was seen as a judge on the NBC summer TV show World of Dance along with Ne-Yo and Jennifer Lopez (Lopez, also an executive producer, chose Hough to be on the jury). The show features dancers from all over the world competing for a $1 million prize. A ratings success, World of Dance was still going strong by the time its 4th season premiered in 2020.

Musical career

In addition to his great success as a dancer and choreographer, Hough has been involved in music, for example when he and longtime friend Mark Ballas formed the band Ballas Hough.
Hough also starred in Michael Bublé's "I Believe In You" video and danced with violinist and girlfriend Lindsey Stirling in "The Arena" video.

"Hold On"

Hough's song "Hold On" was originally inspired by a struggling friend. However, after hearing about the suicide of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, Hough decided to re-record the song and create a video. Its purpose was to bring attention to the issue of suicide, which had also taken his uncle's life, and to encourage the men to discuss their feelings. The updated song was released on November 1, 2017.

Breaking Benjamin

A Breaking Benjamin fan, Hough covered their Ashes of Eden after vocal cord surgery and recorded with them.

Theater

In 2006 Hough took over the West End production of Footloose. He appeared on the New York Spring Show at the Radio City Music Hall in 2015, although an injury kept him out of some performances. Hough was supposed to star in the Broadway production of Singing in the Rain in 2017, but the project was shelved.

Choreography

In addition to his Emmy wins, Hough's choreographic skills have been recognized by ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White. The pair performed Hough's regular choreography at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where they won the gold medal (a first for the United States in the sport).
When he was 22, Hough was the choreographer for the BBC reality show DanceX.

Hough and Julianne often worked together. Their time on Dancing with the Stars coincided and they also headlined the successful Move Live on Tour and Move Beyond Live on Tour dance tours. Additionally, the two clashed in 2015 (Julianne won), and later the siblings co-hosted a Magical Christmas Celebration at Disney Parks in 2016 and variety specials with Houghs in 2019.
