5 Connections to the Film "Dirty Dancing" in Lake Lure
If you are a fan of the movie Dirty Dancing, you will definitely want to add a visit to Lake Lure, North Carolina to your list!
There are several ties to the movie including filming locations, cast lodging, and even an annual festival in honor of the movie.
This article is brought to you in partnership with Lake Lure & the Blue Ridge Foothills and contains affiliate links.

One of the best ways to start your Dirty Dancing themed adventure is by attending the Annual Dirty Dancing Festival in Lake Lure in September.
I attended the 8th Annual Dirty Dancing Festival and the festival has continued to grow bigger and better each year.
The Dirty Dancing Festival event is Friday evening 5-11PM and 9-5 PM on Saturday.
The all-day event is family-friendly with live bands and dance performances inspired by the movie. You even have the opportunity to watch a lakeside screening of the movie during the festival.
There are food and drink vendors on-site and you can even find a unique Dirty Dancing inspired souvenir from the vendors.
Competitions at the Dirty Dancing Festival
Dirty Dancing super fans can test your watermelon carrying skills with friendly competition, learn dance steps, partake in the best character look-alike contest, enter the amateur- intermediate Shag competition or Kellerman’s festival talent show contest.
The Dirty Dancing Festival Lake Lift Competition
The best part of the Dirty Dancing Festival, in my opinion, is the Lake Lift competition. The participants have two practice lifts before making their third try count.
Their final lift is judged by hold long the partner is held in the air by the lifter and how long the partner can hold their position as “Baby” with toe pointed, arms out, and legs lifted.
The year that I attended the festival, the coupled pictured above won it. They not only executed the perfect lift, they even dressed the part.
The competition is harder than it looks and it was so fun to cheer on the couples while they attempted to copy the scene.
We even witnessed a well-executed marriage proposal from a lake lift participant the year I attended the festival.
Before or after you attend the festival, I highly recommend checking out the Flowering Bridge nearby.
Just because the festival is over doesn’t mean that the party has to end. Two area resorts (Rumbling Bald Resort and Lake Lure Inn & Spa) both host Dirty Dancing Festival After Parties with live music and lots of FUN!
2. Golf at Bald Mountain Golf Course
162 Mountains Blvd, Lake Lure, NC
You can enjoy scenic views of the mountains and golf the par 3, 16th hole that was a scene location from the original “Dirty Dancing” movie.
You can recall the specific scene in the movie where Baby asks her father for money while he is playing at the golf course.
3. Sleep Where the Stars from Dirty Dancing Stayed
Sleep at the hotel where Dirty Dancing cast members Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze stayed during local filming at Lake Lure Inn & Spa.
If you want an even more themed experience, you can even rent a Dirty Dancing-themed cabin ( “Baby’s Bungalow” and “Johnny’s Cabin” )
The Lake Lure Inn & Spa is conveniently located across the street from the beach at Lake Lure.
The Inn has a lot of history dating back to 1927 with lots of famous guests including two Presidents, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin Roosevelt.
Make sure that you also check out the 25 Music boxes from 1890-1910 in the lobby at the Inn. If you are lucky you might have a worker available who can tell you more about the pieces.
910 Main St., Chimney Rock, NC
The iconic final dance scene performed by “Johnny” and “Baby” in Dirty Dance took place on the wood that was salvaged from the gymnasium and installed at the Inn’s foyer.
Dance a few steps in the foyer and then enjoy a great dinner with a gorgeous Mountain View from the side patio.
The “Artistry of Cheese” featuring three rotating local kinds of cheese served with seasonal fruits, accouterments, and house-made crackers.
Our table sampled several different appetizers followed by wonderful entrees.. and don’t forget to save room for dessert if you can.
5. View a Dirty Dancing Film Location from a boat2930 Memorial Hwy., Lake Lure, NC 28746
Enjoy a relaxing day on the water with a pontoon boat tour with Lake Lure Tours. The lake is also one of places where Baby and Johnny’s practiced for their lake lift scene in the movie.
During peak season, Lake Lure Tours offers boat tours every hour on the hour. I would recommend scheduling ahead of time if you can to get your preferred time and day.
On your tour, you will see the stairs in the distance where “Baby” carried the watermelon and practiced her dance moves during a scene in the movie. *The stairs are on private property so this is probably as close to them as you can get.
The buildings from the indoor dance practice scenes and staff quarters were unfortunately demolished in the 1980s.
Lake Lure has a lot to offer Dirty Dancing fans and travelers in general. It’s a beautiful destination where you can make memories and have the time of your life too.

Scream queen Jenna Ortega had a lot to prepare for in order to channel Netflix’s version of the creepy, kooky Wednesday Addams. She needed to learn some German, cello, and fencing — all for eight episodes of television. But one extra task she volunteered to take on was as dance choreographer. She worked with creator and director Tim Burton on choosing the Cramps song “Goo Goo Muck” for the number. A few days before filming, Ortega created the dance moves Wednesday would take on for the school-dance scene in the show.
“I just pulled inspiration from videos of goth kids dancing in clubs in the ’80s,” Ortega told us at Wednesday’s Wednesday premiere in Hollywood. “Lene Lovich music videos, Siouxsie and the Banshees performances, and Fosse.” It was her first time choreographing. “I feel like I gained a new level of respect for that line of work,” she said.

Learn to Dirty Dancing - I Know
Take the time to learn "Dirty Dancing", can be an interesting variation on the normal social dance spectrum. Sure, everyone can foxtrot and waltz, but can you swing like Swayze?
Down and Dirty
Dirty Dancing is actually a dance style depicted in the popular 1987 film Dirty Dancing . It was a style of free form and sultry, sensual movements, symbolizing the urge to grow up of rebellious teenagers emerging from the influence of their parents. The basic form is a dance frame with close hugs where the hips are close together, and sometimes the woman sits on one of the man's legs bringing them even closer. From this basic position, a range of movements can be performed, from simple back and forth rocking to full-body sit-ups, push-ups, and more.

After the film became popular, more and more people wanted to learn how to dance this way. Although the style of the film was specifically designed by Kenny Ortega, many other dance teachers from different styles have created curriculums that teach the style. The sources of the dances vary widely, from swing, blues, Argentine tango, samba, to traditional lead-following traditions for most social dances. Teachers such as Johnny LeRock from the UK, along with others, demonstrate this style of dance and give workshops. Much of the music used for this type of dance comes from a movie soundtrack or other R&B style.
You can learn how to dance dirty
If there is no qualified dance instructor nearby, you can still learn how to dance dirty on your own. Because the style is derived from the movie, there is no "official" set of steps to learn. However, you can follow these basic principles and move on.
- Watch and imitate . There are many shows like Dancing with the Stars where you can see great examples of dancing couples and some of the methods used to train them. This may give you a general idea.
- Feel both the music and your partner (if you have one, you can always do the dirty dance alone). But it is vital that you start slowly and, before you move at all, listen to the rhythm and feel the body of your partner and the connection between them next to you.
- As soon as you feel the rhythm, start moving . But try to make the movements as close to the ground as possible (feet, knees, hips) and closer to the center - rotate your stomach, shake your shoulders, etc. You don't have to be big and flashy. Dirty dancing is more about getting in touch with the dark sensual place inside and letting it peek out a little while you dance.
- Work on isolation and contrast . Isolation is when you keep most of your body still and allow one part to move with the music. Johnny LeRock has a part of his demo where he just swings his knees up and down, and the power of a pair of hips just rocking back and forth is well known on the dance floor. Contrasts can vary, such as dancing very close to each other and then turning your partner to move apart, connected only by the fingertips. You still move in the same way, but the difference in distance makes it more exciting. You can also change the level (squat closer to the ground) or speed (a quick spin that ends in a slow, swaying hug).
A big part of dirty dancing is self-confidence. While moving, you should feel hot and sexy, and the mirror is your tool for this. Knowing how your body moves—no matter what body you have—will give you more confidence on the floor.
So put on your groove and shake it!
Dirty Dancing: Dance to the Heartbeat
Dirty Dancing is a cult American melodrama 19'87 featuring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, about the coming together of two young people from different social strata through their passion for social dancing.
This is how sparingly and uncomplicatedly Wikipedia describes the film, after which the name of Patrick Swayze became the catalyst for red cheeks and stupid giggles among young ladies. They watched it in the late 80s and early 90s only in the circle of close friends and friends, hiding from their parents as far as possible. Now times have changed, but the goosebumps from Dirty Dancing continue to tickle your back.
Baby and Johnny are in the center of the audience's attention. Baby is a girl from a wealthy family of a doctor who personifies the American dream. Johnny is just Johnny. A free dancer who earns a living by entertaining the public.
What is Dirty Dancing?
Dirty dances in the film are dances performed at a service staff party in a small American boarding house where the main character is resting. There, Baby is faced with the other side of her own life: people who plow until they pass out during the day, and in the evening splash out emotions in dances. Half-naked, tart, very intimate. There she meets Johnny, who will become her partner, first in dancing, and then in life.
“Yes, I am afraid of everything, I am afraid that I will leave this room and not feel what I feel now. Dance with Me.
— Here?
- Yes.
In fact, classic dirty dancing is shown in only one scene - just at the very party in the boarding house. They are not tied to any of the styles, although they have much in common with Latin American genres. They were performed spontaneously, many movements were invented directly in front of the camera.
Everything that starts after the party - training and performance - is a Cuban mambo with a splash of salsa and other Latin American revelations.
Mambo in Dirty Dancing
Mambo is a Latin American dance brought to the New World by African American black slaves. It was performed in stuffy rooms to rhythmic music (4 by 4) after a hard day's work.
