Maksim Chmerkovskiy has a new reason to be grateful for Dancing With the Stars. The 42-year-old dancer appeared on Friday's episode of Good Morning America, and revealed how being a recognizable face saved him when he was arrested in Ukraine for breaking curfew amid Russia's invasion.
"They're like, 'Passport.' I pull out my American passport. He starts speaking English with me. I'm like, 'I speak Russian.' Then I regretted saying that. I thought maybe it was wrong," Chmerkovskiy recalled. "Then the guy next to him goes, 'Oh, that's the judge from Dancing With the Stars. That's Maks. I know him. He's from TV.' He goes, 'Get inside. Right now.'"
While Chmerkovskiy, who was a pro dancer on DWTS, and did serve as a guest judge a few times, believes that "it would've been fine" if he hadn't been dismissed, he knows being recognized for his work "absolutely" saved him from being detained.
"It's not like I was going to get shot. I was going to get probably put somewhere where I can sit until they figure out who I am and check my identity, whatever it is. It would've been fine," he said. "But I felt like things got real and all of a sudden I don't actually have all of the things needed to feel safe in this place at all. I'm not built for this at all. I'm just realizing that I'm not in a place where I should be."
Chmerkovskiy, who grew up in Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union and was in town to serve as a judge on the country's upcoming season of World of Dance, described the experience as "surreal."
"This is a country and the country's on fire. It was very difficult to process for me. We're used to fly out, do some stuff, experience some things, and always fly back. Here I am, I'm unable to fly home," he said. "That, to me, was the biggest sort of moment of understanding, 'You're in trouble.'"
After his arrest, Chmerkovskiy managed to get on a train to Poland, though the scene at the train station was "horrible."
"It's horrible. I realized after we took off... that all the people that didn't get in have to now sleep right there in that train station. It's not heated. It's just a giant building. It's cold. There are kids everywhere," he said. "... I'm dying inside because this is still very emotional stuff for me. There are kids everywhere. Babies everywhere. It's negative, the temperature."
When he made it back to the United States, Chmerkovskiy admitted that he was "embarrassed" that he fled on the train.
"I'm still very much in that fight or flight. I'm a big boy. I know for a fact I'm going through something mentally. I know for a fact because I get into these cry moments, I'm emotional. I can't control it," he said. "I cried on the way from the airport. I felt embarrassed. I felt embarrassed the entire ride back because I was the only man on the train amongst all women and children... I feel guilty. I feel bad. I feel ashamed. I feel upset."
ET's Kevin Frazier spoke to Chmerkovskiy at Los Angeles International Airport, just moments after the pro dancer was reunited with his wife, Peta Murgatroyd.
"I just don't want to resent peace somewhere else because of what I just saw, that's the reality," Chmerkovskiy told ET. "I don't know really what to say right this second."
As for why he documented his time in Ukraine in the first place, Chmerkovskiy told GMA, "At a time of war, I realized you do what you can."
"This was not me trying to publicize the situation, this was me trying to cry for help," he said. "I literally was just screaming out, 'This is what I just saw. I just want you to see it, wherever you are.'"
Following Chmerkovskiy's return home to his wife and their 5-year-old son, Shai, a source told ET that "Peta is so thrilled to have Maks home and back with her and their son. She has been going through it and has been worried sick and emotional."
"Peta and Maks have received a ton of outpouring support from their friends and Dancing With the Stars family," the source added. "They are both incredibly grateful for that."

J.’s Maksim Chmerkovskiy of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in Ukraine: ‘I wanna go back home’Ukrainian American celebrity Maksim Chmerkovskiy is posting updates from a Kyiv bomb shelter as the Russian invasion continues.
“The situation is pretty dire,” he said in a video Friday.
Chmerkovskiy, 42, who rose to fame as a dancing pro and competitor on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” has called Fort Lee home. He was born in Odessa, Ukraine and came to New York with his family in 1994. The Latin-ballroom dancing champion is also a judge on “Dancing with the Stars Ukraine.”
While Chmerkovskiy said he is safe, dancers he recently judged in competition are now picking up weapons and risking their lives to defend their country, he said.
The Russian conflict in Ukraine stirred memories of his trauma from the ’90s, he said, when he always felt on edge before his family left Eastern Europe.
“Please speak and post about all of this, so talking resumes and shooting stops!” he told his 921,000 Instagram followers.
Chmerkovskiy and his brother, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” champion Val (Valentin) Chmerkovskiy (who won the competition twice; Maksim won in 2014), and their father, Aleksandr “Sasha” Chmerkovskiy, own the Dance with Me chain of dance studios, which has locations in Fort Lee and Glen Rock.
When Maksim and Val were growing up, the family had dance studios in Ridgewood and Saddle Brook.
Posts contain some profanity.
Though Chmerkovskiy said he wanted to depart Ukraine and return to his family in the United States, he is staying put for now.
“I’m not currently trying to leave,” he said in a video posted to Instagram. “I’m staying here. I’m gonna do my best to make sure I’m safe as possible but I’m not moving towards the border. I heard it’s not safe. Unfortunately some of my friends are right now on the route, on the road to (the) Polish border. But they’re also reporting that it’s quite dangerous.”
Chmerkovskiy said he would continue to update his followers. He posted his first video about the situation Thursday, standing on a balcony in Kyiv.
“Contrary to what I should’ve probably done a while ago, but again, everybody has sources and resources and I have mine and I trust my sources and no one saw this coming,” Chmerkovskiy said. “Not that no one saw this coming, but everyone was hoping that the finality of the situation would be averted ... that it’s not going to be this kind of aggression, this kind of aggressive measures.”
As he said this, a siren wailed in the background.
Chmerkovskiy also shared video of families leaving the city with suitcases.
Initially, Chmerkovskiy, who lives in Malibu, California, talked about knowing he could eventually leave Ukraine because of the nature of his passport.
“Honestly, I’m getting really emotional, it’s been a little difficult,” he said in another video. “You know me, I stay strong and I don’t show it, but I wanna go back home.”
He wiped tears from his eyes.
“I realize that I have the way to, you know?” Chmerkovskiy continued. “I realize that I have a different passport and my family is far away and what I’m realizing is that my friends, who kids are here, whose moms, dads are here and elderly people are here, that they can’t just escape, you know?”
From there, he addressed his Russian followers and asked them to speak out, however “comfortable” they are in their position, be it Moscow or elsewhere in the country.
“Dear Russians, you know me,” Chmerkovskiy said. “And I know there’s a lot of people currently in Russia that are watching this that are watching the news and hearing the propaganda and hearing this complete nonsense that’s been talked about. I am not at this point someone who is pleading for someone else’s safety from a far distance, from a safe distance. I’m somebody who is about to go to a bomb shelter because sh-t’s going down.
The celebrity dancer had been filming the dance competition series “World of Dance” in Ukraine. He said he had been in the country six months when the Russian invasion began.
“I think that in 2022 civilized world, this is not the way we do things, and I think that as a powerful, forward-thinking nation, not a third world kind of country, I think the Russians need to get up and actually say something because no one’s opinion is being heard,” he said. “This is all one man’s ambition.”
The TV personality said he stood with his native country.
“WAR is NEVER an answer,” he said in one Instagram post. “I will never be the same. This is stressful and I’m getting old feelings back, like I’ve done this before. This does feel like the way it was when and why we left in the 90s. Like my old PTSD I’ve finally fixed is coming back. I literally only just forgot about those ‘always on the edge’ feelings and actually started worrying about things like bbq grills. I’m crying as I’m typing this because all man deserves to worry about ‘bbq grills’ and not f--king war. Hug your loved ones.”
“Please pray for my husband Maks,” Chmerkovskiy’s wife, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” champ Peta Murgatroyd, said in an Instagram post.
“I don’t usually ask these things from my social media network, however today is extremely hard and the next few will be even harder,” said Murgatroyd, 35.
Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd got married in 2017 and have a 5-year-old son, Shai.
Valentin Chmerkovskiy, 35, also addressed his brother’s status in Ukraine.
“My parents fled this country for this exact reason,” he said in a post to his one million followers on Instagram. “Not because it wasn’t good to them, but because their kids would see war eventually. It’s a cruel irony that 28 years later my brother is in a bomb shelter in Kiev.
“If they hadn’t left I would be on the front lines defending my home right now,” Val Chmerkovskiy continued.
“And the most heartbreaking thing of all I would be either killing or dying at the hands of my fellow brothers. The Russian people don’t want this!! We stood by each other(’s) side. We loved and celebrated one another. I speak Russian yes but make no mistake about it, I am a proud Ukrainian and now the world will finally know the difference. Slava Ukraini all day every day! And to all my Russian friends this might be the best and only time to stand up to your dictator.”

The judge of the show "Dancing with the Stars" Max Chmerkovsky visited his native Odessa for the first time in 10 years
dedicated to the hits of Ukrainian stars.
The other day the judge of the show Max Chmerkovsky went to Odessa to walk around his native places. The star dancer visited his home yard, the dance studio where he had his first trainings, and discovered Odessa in a new way.
“This dance studio has become the most meaningful place for me. It was located near the Opera House. There I first went on stage, I was then 7 years old. I still remember that I was wearing a silver suit. Throughout my life, I have performed on almost all the major stages in the world, but this place has remained in my heart forever,” said Max Chmerkovsky.
The dancer also visited a well-known establishment to remember the taste of traditional Odessa dishes.
“I'm a fan of all things organic and have long ago given up on products that contain chemicals or genetically modified organisms. In my opinion, in Ukraine, food is more organic, so for me this is a real success. I tried Odessa dishes, the taste of which I wanted to remember. I really missed it,” says Chmerkovsky.
Not without warm meetings. The judge of the show shared that he met with his classmates, with whom he studied in a specialized chemistry and biology class.
“Summing up the results of these few very eventful days, I can say for sure that Odessa has become even more dear to me. I was so glad to be back home. I met up with my classmates whom I had not seen since high school. I studied in a specialized chemical-biological class, and when we conducted experiments, we opened the windows, because the smell of hydrogen sulfide was heard all over the street. Now I have a new circle of friends, which was not there for more than 30 years. All these years I had no one to sit with and remember stories from my childhood. They told me things that were not in my memory, and a complete picture of my childhood began to take shape in my head. Now, returning to my city, I realized that there are people who remember me and this is very important for me. I realized that there were roots within me that I had never felt before. Odessa, I love you madly and missed you very much, ”said Max Chmerkovsky and admitted that he still dreams of getting a medical degree.
Recall that Max Chmerkovskiy is from Odessa. When the future choreographer was 14 years old, he and his family moved to the USA. Now the dancer lives in Los Angeles with his wife Pita Margatroid and 4-year-old son, has more than 14 choreographic schools across America. Max Chmerkovsky took part in 17 seasons of Dancing with the Stars in America, but he won the first place in the show in tandem with the famous figure skater Meryl Davis.
Watch already on Sunday at 21:00 on 1+1 TV channel the eighth live broadcast of the show "Dances with stars". According to the results of the last broadcast, two couples left the show at once. Jamala and Anton Nesterko became the first couple to leave the parquet according to the results of the audience voting, the second couple to follow the decision of the judges was the couple of Stanislav Goruna and Daniela Preap.
As part of a large-scale information campaign 1 + 1 media “Get vaccinated. Together we are stronger” to promote vaccination against COVID-19, a vaccination point appeared on the Dancing with the Stars project.
So, on Sunday from 19:00 to 20:00, a medical team was working near Pavilion 12 of VDNKh. Those who showed a ticket to the general run or live broadcast of Dancing with the Stars had the opportunity to be vaccinated with a vaccine of their choice:
• Comirnaty (Pfizer)
• Covishield / Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca)
• Covishield
you can get vaccinated today at your family doctor or by calling the contact center of the Ministry of Health on 0800 60 2019. More information about vaccination can be found on the website vaccination.covid19gov.ua.
