What Is Kelly Hyland From Dance Moms Doing Now?

It's been over two years since the Lifetime show "Dance Moms" ended, but people are still just as obsessed with the cast. The real-life mother-daughter duos stole everyone's hearts, no matter where they ended on the pyramid. Out of all the moms, there was one that was, well, a little louder than the rest. If you're wondering where Kelly Hyland ended up after her daughters stopped dancing, you're going to be a bit surprised.

There are a whopping eight seasons of the show "Dance Moms," but real fans will remember that Hyland left after just four. According to Dance Moms Fandom, the mother of Paige and Brooke Hyland got into a physical altercation with Abby Lee Miller in season four. Hyland was asked to leave the show and she and her two daughters never looked back. The three Hylands never appeared on the show again.

Where is Hyland now, you ask? You will be absolutely shocked to know that she didn't exactly give up on her "Dance Moms" career. Here's everything you need to know about where the mom is now.

Kelly Hyland has a podcast with her 'Dance Moms' cast

Instagram

If you thought that Kelly Hyland was done with "Dance Moms," you can think again. Despite being kicked off the show, she apparently stayed pretty close with the other moms. Hyland, Jill Vertes, Holly Frazier, and Melissa Gisoni started a podcast together called Because Mom Said So.

The cast gets together once a week to talk about just about every topic under the sun. According to the Apple Podcast website, episodes explore everything from the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial to the price of groceries. Basically, the only common denominator of the show is that these women were all on the show "Dance Moms."

As for Christi Lukasiak, she decided not to join the show. "I realized that I no longer wanted to only be 'Dance Mom Christi' and stuck in my same old patterns of behavior," Lukasiak said on Instagram (via Showbiz Cheatsheet). It just didn't feel 'right' for me. That doesn't mean I will pretend DM doesn't exist or never mention it again. Hell, it's too good not to mock and it was a major part of my life for a very long time. But, I've moved on."

That's not her only podcast, either

Instagram

Kelly Hyland is apparently really into podcasts, because the "Because Mom Said So" podcast isn't the only one that she stars on. According to her Instagram, Hyland and her "Dance Moms" co-star Christi Lukasiak have created a brand new podcast called, "Back to Barre with Christi and Kelly." The two will get together once a week to rewatch episodes of "Dance Moms" and give their behind-the-scenes recap, all while drinking wine, of course.

That's right. Despite Christi Lukasiak deciding that she didn't want to be on the "Because Mom Said So" podcast because she "moved on" from the show, she is back to talk about the show. The episode premiered on June 6, and apparently, the two have big plans. Lukasiak said on her Instagram stories that the two decided to do the podcast just two weeks before hitting publish on their first episode.

Kelly sued Abby Lee Miller on behalf of her daughter Paige

Instagram

The podcast isn't the only way that the "Dance Moms" star was tied to the show after her last episode. According to Us Weekly, the family filed a lawsuit in 2014 against Abby Lee Miller alleging emotional distress on the behalf of Paige Hyland. Kelly was arrested for slapping Miller at the time after the "Dance Moms" teacher allegedly tried to bite her (via The Hollywood Reporter). The lawsuit was dismissed a year later.

While Kelly isn't tired directly to the show anymore, she clearly hasn't stopped referencing it even today. Other than her "Back to the Barre" podcast, the 51-year-old still posts throwback photos of the girls and other moms on the show. It's clear that the friendships made on the show, besides Abbey Lee Miller, are strong. Because, you know, not every cast of a show has a podcast together years after the show has ended.

There's rumors that she will write a book

If you haven't quite caught on yet, Kelly Hyland is not ready to give up her "Dance Moms" status, despite not appearing in the last four seasons of the show. According to Us Weekly, Hyland has teased that she will someday be "writing a book about her experience at the studio." At the time of publication, there are no official plans for that book and Hyland has not announced a book on her social media.

Of course, it's quite possible that this tell-all style book won't be needed now that there is a tell-all style podcast with her "Dance Moms" co-host Christi Lukasiak. At the time of publication, only one episode of "Back to the Barre" podcast is out, but the two are heard sharing inside details on the episodes. That's all the more reason to tune into the show.

Kelly actually has three kids

Instagram

Other than juggling podcasts, Kelly Hyland is of course a mom. It turns out that she has one child that wasn't on the show though. While you've likely seen her daughters Paige and Brooke on the show, the two actually have a brother as well. According to Worthy Celebs, his name is Josh Hyland and he keeps it pretty low-key. That doesn't stop his mom from posting him on social media though.

Both Paige and Brooke have graduated college, so it makes sense that the mom would want to try her hand at a new career with them out of the house. Between three kids, two new podcasts, and the possibility of writing a book, this "Dance Moms" star sure has been keeping busy.

Principle

Every week at the Abby Lee Dance Company in Pittsburgh, a group of young dancers led by Abby Lee Miller train for a dance competition. The group usually consists of 5-8 dancers, depending on the episodes of the show. Every week they learn a new group choreography and also, for some, a trio, duo or solo. Solo during competitions is the privilege of little girls and the object of many conflicts between their mothers. Each episode begins with a "pyramid", a ranking created by choreographer Abby to represent the best and worst performances from the previous week. The episode usually ends with an awards ceremony for the winners of the competition. Maddie Ziegler is considered Abby's favorite dancer. She performs solo almost every week, is the winner of most competitions and is almost always at the top of the pyramid. This creates tension with each episode between her mother, Melissa, and the other little girls' mothers. The tension between these mothers and Abby Lee Miller is also at the center of the show.

Around the show

Abby Lee Dance Company

Abby Lee Miller started her own dance company at the age of 14. The Abby Lee Dance Company studio is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Abby Lee Miller was born and has always lived. The dance troupe is open to children ages 2 to 18 and offers many dance classes ranging from tap to hip hop, including jazz. In addition to Abby, these lessons are taught by six well-known teachers. Abby Lee Miller's goal is that after being fully trained in her studio, her students can start a career as a professional dancer.

Choreographies

Abby Lee Miller is an acclaimed choreographer, so choreographic sequences play a big role in the performance. Abby's creations are unique in that each one tells a story. Considered one of Abby's finest choreographies, "Last Lyrics" features dancers imitating a tragically ending car ride. Young girls also often play famous characters on stage. Maddie has visibly stepped into the shoes of Helen Keller, a blind, deaf and mute writer. Abby even told Near, who previously performed a tribute to Maya Angelou, the choreography in memory of her deceased dog, a Bichon named Broadway Baby.

Criticism and controversy

After another run-in with Abby, Kelly Hyland beats the choreographer and ends up on trial. As a result, she and her daughters will leave the show. The incident can be seen in an episode that aired on February 11, 2014. In turn, Kelly Hyland also sued Abby Lee on behalf of her daughter Paige, accusing her of bullying. Abby indeed, among other bullying, advised Kelly to seek treatment for Paige's mental problems. Many viewers have criticized Abby Lee's attitude towards her students, saying that she is solely responsible for the nervous breakdowns of Kelly Hyland or other mothers.

The costumes of little girls in dance competitions are sometimes controversial. The most brutal came after the airing of the ninth episode of the second season, in which young dancers performed a choreography called "Topless Dancers". In this issue, they were dressed in outfits that created the illusion of nudity. Due to much criticism, this episode was subsequently censored by the channel.
