I'd rather wander the streets alone at night than watch this.

With shows like this spanning two hours of a Saturday evening, it's no wonder people go out and turn to drink. I'm appalled by the fact that by paying my TV license I'm helping fund garbage like this. Surely there's a better way to keep families entertained than two hours of people dancing and then cardboard cutout caricatures of judges play the crowd? I swear, the audience is only interested in hearing numbers of increasing value being shouted out, no matter how good or bad the performance was, and if one of the judges threw out the rules just for a moment and gave a contestant a mark of 11 out of 10, the audience would scream so gleefully loud that they'd all tear not only their vocal chords, but also a hole in space and time itself.

"Oh, but you simply must see (insert celebrity name here) do the Charleston!" I hear you say. No. No, I simply must not waste another second of my life watching this show with almost zero entertainment value. This is more the standards of ITV than BBC. In fact, I'm almost certain that this is actually a nationwide experiment for girlfriends and wives to test the patience and loyalty of their partners to the extreme. Can you sit through this without drifting off and staring at the wall for long periods of times? Without completely zoning out to the point of slipping into a coma? Try it. I dare you.

Fortunately for me I have to work Saturday nights. Unfortunately, with the wonders of catch-up, iPlayer and being able to record TV, I now have to witness it at any other moment in time as it's no longer restricted to its allocated slot. However, I do occasionally manage to slip through the net and avoid seeing around 90% of the show if I'm lucky.

I gave it a score of 2 out of 10. It gets one star/point for me and my partner still somehow being together, despite this show. It also gets a second star/point for my TV still being fully intact, no matter how strong the urge is to put my foot through the screen.

How bad is Netflix's Resident Evil series - Movies and series on DTF

Ancestors are always busy with work, adults lie, classmates tease, no one understands, corporations are evil and we are all zombified.

    36 120 views

Attention : in the text there are spoilers for the series "Resident Evil".

Traditionally, texts about new adaptations of Resident Evil begin with the story that the series has never been lucky with them. I always thought that the first film was not bad, and after watching the new Netflix series to the end, I generally became a fan of Poul Anderson.

The series has collected bingo from the problems of unsuccessful film adaptations, bad Netflix series and just script clichés. Even when trying to describe it, it is easy to slip into a cliché. For example, now it is fashionable to say that the film seemed to have been made by a neural network, and Resident Evil fits this comparison perfectly.

The series is so predictable, boring and helpless that at first it is not at all clear why and for whom it was filmed. But gradually the idea of the authors becomes clearer: this is a stereotypical teenage drama about schoolgirls, and it was made for the same stereotypical teenage girls.

    I'm not like that

Resident Evil takes place in two timelines: the dark future and our carefree days. Throughout the season, we are alternately shown how events unfold before and after the zombie apocalypse, and the link is the story of two sisters - Jade and Billy. These are the daughters of scientist Albert Wesker, played here by Lance Reddick ("The Wire"). And at some point, their paths will diverge - just like in Arcane.

Jade on the left, Billy on the right

In the future, Jade started a family and studies zombies to find effective weapons against them and stop the pandemic. Everything does not go according to plan, and the soldiers of the sinister corporation Umbrella are on the trail of the heroine. For most of the season, it all comes down to this: we are just shown one action scene after another while Jade tries to escape from her pursuers.

Adult Jade escaped from a crowd of zombies, but awakened a giant larva

Almost all the events important for the plot are concentrated in the "modern" line, where the juvenile Jade and her sister Billy move with their father to New Raccoon City and try to get comfortable in a new place.

Young Jade is a boorish, impudent and ill-mannered girl who is ready to tell everyone that she reads Zootopia porn, even though no one asks her. Billy is a spineless, reclusive vegan who gets bullied on her first day at a new school. But the sisters have a lot in common: both do not put their father in anything, they love to sort things out and take offense at everyone in a row, but they behave like hopeless dumbasses.

Albert Wesker reacts to Jade's latest antics. I sat with the same face

For most of the series, we are offered to watch how the girls endlessly argue and blame each other for something, download the rights to their father and try to find out what Umbrella really does. And this is the main drawback of the series: the heroines are simply not interesting to follow, and their words and actions only cause irritation.

Jade befriends a young hacker at school along the way, and he helps her break into Umbrella

    's security system.

Their characters are flat, actions are predictable, and actions are motivated only by stupidity and arrogance. The writers of the series have done an amazing job - you rarely see such repulsive main characters even among teenagers.

This is partly the merit of the actresses: they read lines with lean faces throughout the series. Adult actors here make a lot of grimaces and overact, and in contrast to these young stars, they are completely perceived as clowns.

One of the most emotional scenes in the series. Essentially the culmination of the plot and acting of Jade and Billy

The operator also helps: the camera periodically approaches the girls' faces at a dangerous distance and looks for the most uncomfortable angle so that the viewer can count the pimples on their faces.

In order for the viewer to understand that the characters are on the same wavelength with him, anime, Google, social networks, Elon Musk and other things that are not important for the plot are sometimes remembered here. And the soundtrack emphasizes with all its might that the series is “in the subject”: in the very first episode, we are shown young rebels to the song of Billy Eilish Oxytocin, which Billy Wesker listens to in headphones.

She couldn't look away, look away, look away
She'd wanna get involved, involved, involved
And what would people say, people say, people say

And yes, the song is prophetic: soon Billy notices a rabbit in the Umbrella Corporation. The girl encourages her sister to steal her father's keys and sneak into the office at night to save the poor animal and bring the company to clean water - after all, Umbrella is famous for not experimenting on animals.

As a result, Billy is bitten by a dog infected with the T-virus, but the girl has unique genetics, and the virus does not turn her into an ordinary zombie.

Billy Wesker plays the whole series to his favorite singer

The showrunners have the right track for each iconic scene. Here's Billy Wesker tormented by the T-virus to Halsey's melancholy song The Tradition.

Oh, the loneliest girl in town
Is bought for pennies a price

If a character tries to negotiate with Umbrella, his words are interrupted by a teary track about a failed deal with the devil. And in the season finale, Jade summons a whole horde of zombies with the help of pheromones to the symbolic song My Heart Has Teeth.

You've never met someone like me
My heart has teeth, my heart has teeth
And it's looking for something to eat
My heart has teeth, my heart has teeth

I'm sure half of the extras cried from these lines

In general, the soundtrack here is deep and "meaningful". It enhances the atmosphere of the school drama, clearly marks the playlists of the target audience and boldly emphasizes the accents of the plot. And the story of Resident Evil touches on a lot of themes: bullying, teenage rebellion, generation gap, corporate hypocrisy, all sorts of inequalities, the importance of the family.

Unfortunately, the creators of the series have nothing to say on these topics, except for the abstract "we all want the best, but it turns out as always. " On paper, the show tries to explain to the younger generation that all families have oddities and secrets, but it is important to accept loved ones for who they are, trust and support them.

And in order for the viewer to understand, one of the main characters literally pronounces the moral of the story closer to the finale. It just doesn't work for the heroines.

But even this simple truth does not affect the characters of the Wesker sisters in any way: they behave like inadequate bitches from the first to the last episode, in the past and in the future, always and everywhere

At the same time, the showrunners tried to pump up suspense and turn the teenagers' story arc into some kind of Stranger Things, but in reality, the series are even ridiculous to compare.

Let's say Resident Evil has very strange priorities. Scenes that could theoretically be tense or even creepy are either ludicrously staged or as crumpled as possible. At the same time, the endless showdowns are stretched to the point of obscenity, and the topics of conversation and the opinions of the characters almost do not change in eight episodes.

For most of the series, we are offered to listen to how the characters suck on the same problems in empty arguments, and from time to time someone decides to do some impulsive stupidity, and then the plot moves from a dead point. If desired, this epic can be reduced to an hour and a half film - and not lose anything important.

And the funny thing is, the first season closes almost none of the main story arcs. For example, until the very end, we will never know what led to the Wesker sisters falling out and how the virus destroyed civilization. Answers to all questions that theoretically should worry the viewer are transferred to the second season. If he ever will.

    I am different

There are surprisingly many references to games in the series, and for some reason the creators are trying to weave what is happening into the Resident Evil setting. Let's say that the events here take place after the incident in Raccoon City, and gradually the Wesker girls find out what happened in the city and how it all ended. In one scene, they even watch a tape of Albert Wesker meeting the mutated Lisa Trevor. The series references a wide variety of places and events, including Wesker's death in a volcano in RE5. And the daughter of James Marcus heads the Umbrella Corporation.

The very image of Umbrella Corporation has been modernized, as expected, to add a social commentary on current topics. After the failure with bioweapons, the head of the company focused on the release of a unique antidepressant based on the T-virus. Of course, the series has bantering advertising, cute mascots and other jokes about corporate hypocrisy. Against the background of everything else, they look very organic and appropriate.

It is only unclear why this is all. Resident Evil has never been a chamber drama about schoolgirl tantrums and acute social humor. Because of this dissonance, the series is perceived as an amateur film adaptation of teenage fan fiction.

This is especially noticeable towards the end, when we are shown a flashback with the real Albert Wesker. Lance Reddick in this image looks like an elderly Blade cosplayer in the next product of The Asylum studio.

    Staging corresponding to

The same applies to just about all the action in the series. There are deliberately cheap and soapy graphics, a banal nondescript production and a crumpled presentation. Because of this, even the most violent and "spectacular" moments cause only bouts of awkwardness. Even though most of the action is concentrated in the fourth and eighth episodes.

The series showed a whole collection of monsters from Resident Evil, but due to the apparently modest budget, they rarely appear, flicker for a short time, and die stupidly.

The spider tears apart the extra and soon dies in the duty chase

The giant crocodile looks better than all the other monsters in the series, but his appearance in the plot is more like a joke

Sometimes the series not only flirts with iconic images from Resident Evil, but also openly ridicules them.

Lizunov are shown in the third episode only to flicker in the background, and one of them got juicy on the head with a door

In the fourth episode, we are prepared to meet Jade with the Chainsaw, but he dies with a couple of shots

At the same time, there is no trace of suspense, let alone hints of horror. Even the creepiest scene in the series looks cheap and trite, but ends just funny.

    Even though there is dismemberment

The best and most detailed fight scene in the entire series appears in the fourth episode. In it, a plump Umbrella employee fends off a horde of zombies to jazz funk. Like the entire Resident Evil soundtrack, the song is full of deep meaning and is called Feels Just Like it Should.

I specifically uploaded the scene to YouTube so you can see for yourself in all its glory - how, according to the showrunners of the series, the action in Resident Evil should feel. The level of staging corresponds.

Netflix's Resident Evil is the worst movie adaptation of Resident Evil so far. Last year's Raccoon City was a cheap, crumpled, and poorly filmed horror movie, but Johannes Roberts at least tried to recreate the atmosphere of the games. The authors of the series, on the other hand, went into all serious trouble and did not deny themselves anything, it was much more interesting for them to film the story of the growing up of two girls who oppose cannibalistic capitalism.

Unfortunately, the showrunners failed even with this task: it turned out to be a complete misunderstanding, boring and inconspicuous.

It may seem that the series has no positive aspects at all, but it is not. There is a scene in which the main character wraps herself in ridiculous protection and tries to get a MacGuffin from a zombie's pocket.

In one of my favorite scenes, a goofy Albert Wesker clone comically kills Umbrella agents and comforts the girls.

In the series, even adults constantly behave like complete idiots, and the main character, by her own stupidity, almost dooms her own daughter and, in general, everyone who is dear to her to death. Why? It's just easier for her to sneak zombies into the ship for the sake of an experiment than just go to bed and do the same thing the next morning with the help of colleagues.

After all, this is where an overweight Umbrella employee shoots down a crowd of jazz-funk zombies. Do you know what his motivation is? The guy just wants to get Jade Wesker to the boss and get home to his two dogs. If the series were filmed about him, it would be much more interesting.

Because at its best, Netflix's Resident Evil is capable of entertaining with a selection of cringe-worthy humor. Unfortunately, most of the series is filmed with a straight face and only elicits a mixture of boredom and annoyance. But closer to the finale, the creators stop restraining themselves, and in the seventh episode, a natural krinzhfest begins.

The best scene in the entire first season is the Umbrella head dance. Watch strictly with sound

And that's what the Resident Evil showrunners do best! If the entire first season was like this, with every awkward joke and deliberately idiotic scene accompanied by off-screen laughter, the series would be just fun to watch. The creators should have relaxed and followed the example of the authors of the adaptation of "Cowboy Bebop": shoot a full-fledged sitcom.

Off-screen laughter would only make this scene better

Let all the actors act, dance and make faces. Let there be at least one tasteless joke in every scene. Let iconic characters become parodies of themselves. It's moments like these that have always been gems in Netflix adaptations. This is what platform authors do best. No one remembers what was in Netflix's Death Note, but the squealing Light became a meme, and it's still nice to remember him.

Unfortunately, "Resident Evil" doesn't often indulge in awkward humor to justify its eight-hour running time. And this is the most annoying thing.
