Highest quality as expected from Stephen Poliakof
Cannot understand the current rating of this outstanding drama. The story, set over a few weeks in 1933, follows a talented black leader of a jazz band as he tries to get his band established in the London club and hotel scene. He soon finds he is meeting with royalty but that something dark is also going on.
Dancing on the Edge explores the slimy corruption of real evil as royalty, masonry, bigotry and sensuality all combine to provide a very particular view of the upper reaches of British Society.
The production values are excellent, and the 1930's are recreated in remarkable detail. The acting is uniformly excellent, with Chiwetell Ejiofor providing a compelling performance of a man caught up in circumstances spinning beyond his control.
Highly recommended as BBC drama at its best.

Beautiful storytelling!

Dancing on the Edge is one of those movies that leads you to feel as if you are watching a play. The story is a period piece set in the world of English aristocrats, jazz musicians, love affairs, and prejudice. The casting is on point as are the dialogue and directing. I highly recommend it for an entertaining getaway. It is like reading an excellent book! That is high praise indeed.

Once again PBS has a great series. Why doesn't American networks give us this type of series instead of intelligent writing and performing instead of so called reality shows. How many House wives can you take to watch.

Synopsis
The series follows the experience of a black jazz band in London in the 1930s. Led by the compassionate but angry Wesley Holt, these talented musicians perform a concert at the Imperial Hotel with the help of the able journalist Stanley Mitchell. Their show has proven to be a success, with countless aristocrats, some members of the royal family, hiring the band to perform at their parties. The media is also rushing to interview and photograph the group, as well as some businessmen such as the ambitious American Walter Masterson and his employee Julian. However, the tragedy will hit the members of the group, setting off a series of events that could ruin their careers...

Review of the series Dancing on the Edge (2013). Dancing on the edge - KinoNews.ru 930 years, the height of all kinds of large and small orchestras.
More and more Dixieland is gaining momentum and a concept, an expression in music, such as "Jazz"!
Style, dances, outfits, fashion - everything dictates its hitherto unwritten laws.
A new wave of art has captured the cradle of glamor and creativity, from fashion designers to expressionist artists, there is an influence on society with its bohemians, up to money-bag magnates and the ruling elite. In such a period of time, we see the history of a jazz genius framed by so many expressive and grotesque characters, so textured for an unfolding show, events, detective, drama, acting, a little suspense, and a lot of music that influences and creates a unique atmosphere of the beginning of the formation of a newfangled currents.
It is the atmosphere that is the main component in this work. With many details, from small objects to the monumentality of some buildings, houses, vintage stairs and cars. They seem to emphasize the kingdom of glamor, while at the same time setting limits and divisions for many turns of the hierarchy of the whole society. This is a playful index finger to morality and patronage, patronage and neglect, puppetry and promotion.
This story captures like a book, weaving more and more intrigue and brilliance of adventure, adding a catchy color scheme, softness of tones and variegation of the picture itself.
In this kaleidoscope, many scenes are reminiscent of Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. In place of Leonardo DiCaprio here comes his antipode Chiwetel Ejiofor, in terms of temperament and character, appearance and life values. Let's remember his game and the main role in the film "12 Years a Slave", a magnificent intensity of drama, sensual emotionality and at the same time restraint. Here the character turned out to be more complete, complete, with a full set of bright characteristics. After this project, one can rightly admire Ejifor's acting charisma.
His game, paired with Matthew Goode, becomes the main "violin" in the ensemble of actors, matched surprisingly harmoniously, in tune with the desire of the character he saw.
The casting of other actors looks like a glove, emphasizing the features and certain inclinations of the characters. Well-known honored actors John Goodman and Jacqueline Bisset play moneybags, patrons-philanthropists, proudly, unceremoniously and arrogantly, endowing their image with fullness of causticity and hope for power. Showing us the development of this or that character as each episode builds up.
In this regard, it is interesting to know about the project itself, a many-hour production that was pushed and financed by the producers of a mostly low-key one-day hit. Set to last for decades, this mini-series is a big name along with the work of Woody Allen and Peter Greenaway. In the mannered mystery of "Education of the Senses" and the serenity of "Easy Virtue", filmed in a historical and prosaic manner by the BBC channel.
The BBC is the UK's main television channel and always handles these productions with care. Recall the series "Miss Marple", "Velvet Fingers", "Marilyn" or the newfangled "Sherlock", this investment was no exception. A distinctive feature of the BBC, the British channels, famous studios, is mannerism, graceful style, smooth frame transition, soft beauty of the picture and special care in large and small details. Watching such series, any viewer involuntarily stays in the atmosphere and state of this time. Even English restraint, stiffness, sublimity, looks immeasurably desirable, as if you are offered green tea with milk and buns. Paying more attention to presentation and serving, costumes, objects and scenery, such productions become a real gourmet delicacy of television etiquette.
The unhurried swaying of the plot is equivalent to immersing the viewer in the desired warm bath of comfort and bliss, making the historically costumed saga a pleasant event of your hour. Speaking of time. Four and a half hours of quality footage and story time fly by in one breath, telling us about the uncluttered bloated format and the regret of the inexorable end that needs to be continued. This production was awarded the Golden Globe and nominations from the Emmy, Golden Globe, Society of British Critics for the best mini-series or film on television in 2014. Music plays a very special role in this production. Such a brilliant musical accompaniment makes the series emotionally rich. The spirit and stylization of retro expression reigns in many notes of such a wonderful sound. Even for those who do not perceive this style, it will seem perfect with the visuals shown. A big band of 11 musicians, two such sweet-voiced vocalists with velvety and fiery nightingale vocals ignite with a live sound, live instruments, these are brass and wind instruments and of course the piano. The atmosphere, intoxicating with contagious sound revelry, contributes to a great holiday and a chic party, where it is you who will be the birthday girl and the hero of the day, fashionably put on under the dress code of this evening haute couture.
In conclusion, this mini-series is much more refined and smarter than many high-profile chewing gum series about nothing. Also behind many of them is a trail of a certain direction, pomposity, pathos, even worse, exaltation and a proud march of agitation, pressure on pity and excessively poisonous human correctness. All others are imprisoned for a reward, and from the first episode we seem to be screaming against slavery, against violence, against abortion, against divorce, give us a prize! But most of all, newfangled ratings are used, manipulations with the viewer, what the entrance, what the mass viewer pecks at, we do a bunch of that. It turns out a waste-free, endless serial conveyor, with a change in titles and covers, but there are actually no truly professionally made creative modern masterpieces.
Like the 2017 series "Feud" ("Feud" - Feud between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis), "Dancing on the Edge" is distinguished by its artistic flamboyance and presentation to a mature adult audience.
