How does the solar powered dancing flower work
Solar Dancing Flower – Net Zero Guide
Solar flowers are brightly colored plastic office accessories and car decorations that come in a range of sizes and designs. The flower is powered by energy from the sun, so it does not require batteries or water and it is easily portable.
There are three major brands of solar powered flowers: BeeHappy, manufactured by the American firm Two’s Company Inc.; Dancing Flowers by Warm Fuzzy Toys; and Flip Flap, made by the Japanese company Minya International.
A solar panel at the top of the flowerpot powers these floral desk accessories. The light energy received from the solar panel is converted to electrical energy by a small motor inside the base of the flowerpot. The motor consists of a coil of wire
wrapped around a magnet (solenoid).
Unpacking and Getting Started
Solar flowers are available from a range of outlets, and come in many colors and designs. Whatever design you have bought, regardless of it’s brand, remove the solar flower carefully from its packaging. Flip Flap solar flowers need to be unpacked using a Philips (+) screwdriver.
Move the flower to a brightly lit area. If there is an on/off button at the base of the flowerpot, select the on position and your flower should begin to move. If the solar flower is initially unresponsive to light, it may be that the solar panel needs to be charged. Place the flower in direct sunlight, or under a bright lamp for a couple of hours and the flower should begin to move and sway. The brighter the light levels, the more the plant should move.
If the solar flower is going to be kept on a car dashboard it must be securely attached to prevent movement during driving. To do this, the base of the flowerpot should be attached to the dashboard by using the double-
Pots
All three brands of solar flowers sell their plants in brightly colored pots. Customers can choose from a range of flowerpot colors when buying their solar flower, with one design of flower available with a ladybug-
The standard model of Flip Flap solar flowers do not come with a flower attached, they are simply two moving leaves. Other brands have flowers attached as standard. However Flip Flap solar plant designs also come with flowers in a range of colored flowerpots. It is possible to buy miniature multi packs of solar flowers with different colored flowerpots.
Solar Sunflowers Design
Sunflower solar flowers are sold by two brands: Dancing Flowers and Flip Flap. They work in the same way as other flower designs, with a solar panel above and a colored plastic flowerpot. Dancing Flowers offer an individual sunflower plant with orange, pink or yellow flowerpot, as well as a 3-
Flip Flap’s solar sunflower comes with a union-
Bee Design
Flip Flap and Dancing Flowers offer bumblebee design solar flowers, where the bee replaces a flower at the top of the central stem. Other designs such as butterflies, frogs and ladybugs are also available.

Solar Dancing Flower / Flip Flap Flower / Solar dancing toys
Yep, a solar dancing flower powered by the sun! For your desk or car dashboard. Reduce stress for instant relaxation, meditate on it, have it as a nice colorful decoration item in your home. Or if you don’t know what to give someone…
The Flip Flap dancing daisy: you have to have one, simply because it’s completely useless, and that makes it so cute! (I like useless things, I admit…) And someone named them ‘Flip Flaps’. Imagine a board meeting: “Yes boss, we’ve spend several thousands on this solar dancing flower and the marketing department came with this: Flip Flaps!“.
“…..The solar powered Flip Flap flower eases your senses and takes you into a calmer world. Simply put your dancing flower pot on your desk, table, fireplace mantel or the dashboard of your car and it will help you relieve from stress! Speed will adjust automatically to the amount of sun or bulb light it receives!”
Wow indeed!
The Solar Dancing Flower doesn’t need water
Imagine: You are working in a tiny cubicle with no room for live plants. Or instead of a green thumb, yours happens to be… well, not green. But you desperately really, really, really want something green in your work space, then I suppose that you are the consumer for whom this solar-powered-plant-with-moving-leaves-called-a-Flip-Flap was created!
Features
So let’s take a look at some features of the Flip Flap solar dancing flower:
Ah, well, the Flip Flap flower in the video is not on some desk, but in front of a window. Seems logical because flowers need sunlight. And this solar powered version is of course not an exception. Though it runs on light bulbs too!
Who makes the Flip Flap flower?
TOMY from Japan (where it has a big cult following…) distribute this solar toy in the UK, but according to this Flip Flap article on Wikipedia it is originally patented by the ‘Shenzhen Longgang Pinghu‘ company from China. There are lots of ‘fake’ Flip Flap flowers on the market so if you want to make sure you have the original and authentic Tomy Flip Flap flower, look for the Tomy logo. Also the text on the box of the original consists of almost only Japanese words and characters. Besides, the leaves are much more darker than the fake ones.
How do they work?
This video explains how the flip flap flower actually work. It works with a magnet and a small current, generated by the solar panel.
Flip Flap flower says no…. broken
Is your special solar dancing flower friend broken? If it’s not working as it should, then probably the magnet is displaced or knocked during shipping or after it fell from the your table. Don’t despair! Geek Girl explains on her blog how to fix a flip flap flower after it fell on the floor, but you can also take a look on this page where I explain how to fix solar lights.
Specs of the solar powered Flip Flap plant:
- No batteries needed, powered by bulb or solar light
- Leaves move randomly
- Includes a base pad
- Lock the leaves to stop them from flipping and flapping
- No water required – don’t forget –
- Protects the environment by using solar power
- Works indoors & outdoors
Do you have a Flip Flap Solar Dancing Flower (…not to be confused with Flip Flop flower pots btw, that’s something completely different…) and want to share your experience? Feel free to write here about your green flapping solar flower and especially how it changed your life! 🙂
Where to buy a Solar Dancing Flower
What's inside the Solar Dancing Flower toy?
What's inside the Solar Dancing Flower and other similar toys?
I came across a Chinese toy "Solar Dancing Flower" in the store, the design of which echoes the design of the electromechanical candle described in one of the previous articles. The toy is only $1, so I bought it and took it apart to see what was inside. Report below.
I have already described an electromechanical spark plug in this article, but it was powered by a battery. And this toy does not even need batteries, as it is powered by light energy. Moreover, it requires very little energy.
I couldn't resist and dismantled this product. I wanted to know how the independent movement of the petals and stem of the flower is organized.
(HD video 1280x720px).
Inside was a small printed circuit board with a microcircuit, filled with compound and powered by a photocell through an electrolytic capacitor. This capacitor is a power filter, and given the long period of oscillation, and energy storage, in the period of time between pulses.
The output of the pulse generator is connected to an electromagnet, which is made in the form of a frameless coil. Looking at this coil, it is safe to say that this is the same coil that is used in electromechanical clocks or in quartz clocks with a decorative pendulum. True, those coils also have a feedback winding.
In this picture you can see how the pendulum system of the toy works. Each of the elements of the flower has its own counterweight. In this case, the only magnet is built into the counterweight pos.1, balancing one of the leaves of the flower. The stem is connected to a counterweight pos.2, into which a small steel self-tapping screw pos.3 is screwed.
Counterweights, balancing the leaves of the flower, pos.1 and pos.4 (in the photo above) are connected by a slider lever pos. 3, which makes their movement symmetrical. All pendulums are based on axles. In this picture, these are pos.1 and pos.2.
That, in fact, is the whole structure. If you have a faulty electromechanical clock lying around and a photocell from a faulty calculator, then you can try to construct something similar.

O once while wandering around the Internet, I accidentally stumbled upon Flip Flap, I didn’t understand what it was, but due to my curiosity I decided to find out what it is.
It turned out that Flip Flap, and it is also called “Sunflower” is a classic plastic pot with a flower. The peculiarity lies in the fact that in sunlight the flower begins to move, lifting its leaves and swaying from side to side with a flower. All this looks very funny and uplifting and brings comfort to the house where Flip Flap stands.
I , like many other people, immediately fell for this know-how and decided to buy a sunny flower, and ordered 3 at once due to the low cost of this gadget
This “dancing” toy was invented in Japan. Flip Flap runs on sunlight and artificial light (no batteries required). Depending on the degree of illumination of the room, the figures can move either faster or slower, and sometimes they completely “fall asleep”. Watching Flip Flap is uplifting and helps relieve stress. The toy can be used at home, in the office and in the car.
Flip Flap toys are a great gift for everyone
I ordered Flip Flap in an online store with delivery by Russian post cash on delivery, I will not give a link to the site, you can choose the online store that suits you in search engines or buy it in your city, if any are on sale
Flip Flap - does not work
As you know, everything made in China is not always of high quality and resistance to breakage, so your Flip Flap may break or, most likely, not work after you take it out of the box and point it at the light
If Flip Flap does not work, make sure that enough light hits the solar panel, which is located on the top of the gadget, it is also best to use a flashlight to check if it works - point the beam of light at the solar panel and if the dancing flower is working, which after 3-5 seconds it will start to move, if the flower remains motionless it is necessary to disassemble the body of the flower
O usually the case or just rests on the inserts and is easily separated into two halves, you just have to pry it with a screwdriver, but it happens that the case is twisted with 4 screws, then you will need to unscrew them first
Having disassembled the pot case, you will see the Flip Flap mechanism, this is a solar battery, from which two wires go to the printed circuit board, a printed circuit board with a microcircuit, which is filled with black compound, a capacitor that is parallel to the power supply from the solar battery (it is the charge of the capacitor that determines pause of 3 seconds before the flower begins to move), then there is a coil without a core and the actual pendulum mechanism with a magnet
E If the Flip Flap does not work, make sure that all wires from the solar panel to the board and from the board to the coil are intact, if the wires are in order, then make sure that the magnet on the pendulum has not come unstuck and has not fallen out. In my case, perhaps during delivery, the magnet fell off the pendulum, I had to glue it, after which the flower worked
If the magnet is in place, make sure that the entire mechanism is working, all moving parts of the Flip Flap should be very easy to move and not have any wear, if this condition is also met, then the microcircuit on the printed circuit board may be faulty, in which case only its replacement will help ...
Flip Flap - user reviews
Most of those who purchased this gadget respond positively, just read the topics on the forums on the Internet, where solar dancing flowers are discussed
I want to draw your attention to the fact that there is a huge variety of models in which Flip Flap is made, in the photo above in the middle you see not quite a flower, this Flip Flap shakes its head and blinks its eyes
Below I suggest you watch a video where you can see the flower in action
I already have, but it was battery operated. And this toy does not even need batteries, as it is powered by light energy. Moreover, it requires very little energy.

Flip flap (also sometimes spelled flip flop , from English flip flap, or solar toy , dancing flowers) is a solar-powered decorative toy. At the moment, there are many varieties of these toys. They are quite different in appearance. Their mechanism of operation has become much more complicated, but the general principle of working on solar energy has remained the same.
FLIP FLAP is powered by sunlight and artificial light and does not require batteries . Depending on the degree of illumination of the room, FLIP FLAP toys can move either faster or slower, and sometimes they fall asleep completely.
FLIP FLAP lifts the spirits and relieves stress.
The toy originated in Japan. The first representative of this family of toys was a dancing flower: a flower in a small pot moved its petals and bud, dancing. Over time, they began to be made not only in the form of a flower, but also in the form of television characters, such as the cyber cat Doraemon and Hello Kitty.
Souvenir flip flop can be put at home (on the table, on the window), in the office, even in the car.
The most popular is the dancing flip flap flower. He creates around him an atmosphere of calmness, kindness and peace. There are also toys in the form of your favorite cartoon and movie characters, in the form of little animals, etc. The playful design and the illusion of dancing can lift your spirits and add vigor.
Due to huge demand, production of Flip Flap toys was moved to China. Chinese manufacturers began to embody not only Japanese images, but also their national ones in Flip Flap toys. For example, the Children of Fortune, the talismans of the XXIX Summer Olympic Games, found their embodiment in flip-flap toys.
Height (of the flower version, for example): These are small toys, very funny.
Where to buy. In Russia, they are also sold, there is a large section in Ozone.
How flip flops work
All flip flops work in the same way. A small coil connected to a solar battery is mounted in the lower part of the case.
A small pendulum with a magnet at the bottom is placed in the upper part of the housing.
The upper part of the pendulum is most often attached to the body parts of the toy. The coil, receiving an electric charge from the solar battery, causes the pendulum to oscillate. In this way, the body parts of the flip-flap toy are set in motion. For example, a toy's head or arms begin to move.
Flip flop (sometimes also written flip flop, from the English flip flap, or solar toy, dancing flowers) is a decorative toy powered by solar energy. Flip flop toy was invented in Japan, and in a very short time became popular all over the world. Due to the huge demand, the production of flip flops was moved to China, which accelerated the manufacturing process of the toy.
The flip flap toy is arranged as follows. Inside the flip flop body there is a coil and a pendulum with a magnet to which the body of the toy is attached. Receiving an electric charge, the coil makes the pendulum oscillate, thereby setting in motion the "body parts" of the toy: head, handles, petals. The toy moves when light hits it. Depending on the lighting, Flip Flap can move faster or slower, or even stop altogether.
