Goodreads Summary:

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has thousands of enemies, and many have set out to find her. As they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind. Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way to Daenerys. But his newest allies in this quest are not the rag-tag band they seem, and at their heart lies one who could undo Daenerys’s claim to Westeros forever. Meanwhile, to the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice. From all corners, bitter conflicts reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.

What to Expect in Future Seasons Based on 'Fire & Blood' Book

There's a joy in knowing how a book ends as you watch the television show, so you know who to pay attention to, and have a sense of the broader sweeps of the plot. This is especially true for House of the Dragon, when there is a sprawling cast with characters that seem similar to those in Game of Thrones.

While some viewers prefer a zero spoiler policy—even staying off the internet until they've watched the full episode—we have a feeling if you clicked into this article, you want to know what happens in future seasons of House of the Dragon. We have you covered: here's what happens in Fire & Blood, the George R.R. Martin book that the TV show is based on.

The book is a history of the Targaryen family, starting with Aegon the Conqueror. But, most relevant for House of the Dragon viewers are the chapters that start with "Heirs of the Dragon," which focus on what happens following the reign of King Jaehaeyrs I Targaryen when King Viserys I takes the throne. (Here's a family tree of all the Targaryens.)

The main question becomes: Who will succeed Viserys? Will it be his brother, Prince Daemon? His daughter, Princess Rhaenyra? After Viserys's first wife, Aemma, dies, he names Rhaenyra his heir. But soon after, he remarries Alicent Hightower, and Alicent gives birth to sons, including Aegon, her eldest child.

The court then divides itself into those who support Rhaenyra's claim and those who support that of Alicent and her sons. As Martin writes, "In 111 AC, a great tourney was held at King's Landing on the fifth anniversary of the king's marriage to Queen Alicent. At the opening feast, the queen wore a green gown, whilst the princess dressed dramatically in Targaryen red and black. Note was taken, and thereafter it became custom to refer to 'greens' and 'blacks' when talking of the queen's party and the party of the princess, respectively."

Around 120 AC (or 'after conquest' in Martin's dating system), he writes, "There was never any doubt that King Viserys still meant for his daughter to follow him upon the Iron Throne, and her sons to follow her in turn." Yet, Martin explains "the bloody seeds of the Dance of the Dragons had been planted" in the animosity between Rhaenyra's sons and Alicent's sons—and between Rhaenyra and Alicent themselves.

Flash forward a bit, and when Viserys dies in 129, Aegon is crowned Aegon II, and Rhaenyra isn't told of her father's death. This leads to an all-out civil war between the Targaryen families, and many (read: almost all) of them dying.

It ends with Princess Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon's son Aegon III marrying Alicent's granddaughter, Jaehaera, thus uniting the two feuding branches of the Targaryen house.

The fates of all the

House of the Dragon characters, according to Fire & Blood

King Viserys dies at age 52, having reigned over Westeros for 26 years.

Princess Rhaenyra rules as Queen Rhaenyra for about half a year on the Iron Throne. As many of her children are killed, she flees King's Landing after a riot known as the Storming of the Dragonpit, and is eventually caught. Her half-brother, Alicent's son Aegon II, feeds her to his dragon, Sunfyre.

Alicent Hightower, aka Queen Alicent, survives the Dance of the Dragons. However, she was confined to her chambers in the last year of her life, and in the books, she goes insane and dies during an outbreak of Winter Fever in 133 AC.

Prince Daemon marries Rhaenyra following the death of his second wife, Laena Velaryon, and they have three children. When he is riding his dragon during the Battle Above Gods Eye, he leaps from his dragon to kill Aemond, one of Alicent's sons with Viserys. Daemon's body is never found.

Corlys Velaryon supported Rhaenyra in her claim to the throne, but after a series of events, is accused of treachery and arrested. After news of his arrest circulates, his men begin to abandon Rhaenyra's forces, and after Rhaenyra flees Dragon's Landing, he is released from the dungeons. Alicent offers him a pardon in exchange for support of King Aegon II, and Corlys negotiates that Aegon III and Jaehaera should be wed. He dies of old age.

Rhaenys Targaryen, married to Corlys, allies with Rhaenyra and sits on her black council. During the Dance of the Dragons, she flies in Meleys during the battle of Rook's Rest and fights against Aegon II and Aemond (who are also on dragons). Meleys, Rhaenys's dragon, dies, and Rhaenys is believed to die with her—but her body was never identified.

Laenor Velaryon, who married his cousin Rhaenyra, is killed by his friend, Ser Qarl Correy, three years after the birth of Joffery. In the books, multiple reasons are given for Qarl killing Laenor: either out of jealousy that Laenor was enamored with someone else, or that Daemon had Laenor killed. In the show, Laenor fakes his death and leaves Westeros with Qarl—a rare happy ending.

Jacaerys, Lucerys, & Joffrey Velaryon: Rhaenyra and Laenor's three sons (like to actually be the sons of Ser Harwin Strong) are all killed during the Dance of the Dragons. In the show, The death of Lucerys (a.k.a. Luke) occurs in the season one finale.

Aegon II, known as Aegon the Elder, is Alicent and Viserys's eldest son who rules (briefly) as king. During the Dance of the Dragon, he is badly burned in a battle and his legs are crippled. He dies from poison at age 24.

Helaena Targaryen, the only daughter of Viserys and Alicent, is married to her older brother Aegon II. They have three children: twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, and Maelor. During the Dance of the Dragons, Jaehaerys is killed, and Helaena is taken captive after King's Landing falls to Rhaneyra. Helaena dies by suicide.

Aemond Targaryen, the second son of Viserys and Alicent, participates in the Dance of the Dragon in support of his brother, Aegon II. During the Battle Above the Gods Eye, Daemon kills Aemond.

Game of thrones, game of thrones continuation, house of dragons when the second season, house of the dragon, game of thrones house of dragons // Look

  • Return of Jon Snow and the Golden Empire. All about the new series on the "Game of Thrones"

  • Frame from the series "House of the Dragon" (HBO, Amediateka)

The fantasy series "House of the Dragon", a plot offshoot of "Game of Thrones", has completed its first season. Considering HBO renewed the project for a second season early, it looks like the network's management is pleased with the results. And this means that now other spin-offs have a great chance to quickly reach the audience. We talk about each of the projects in more detail (even about those that seem to have been canceled).

What will happen

"House of the Dragon" - Season 2

Yes, there will be a second season. Streaming HBO Max announced the renewal of "House of the Dragon" immediately after the start of the first season. Filming will start at the beginning of 2023 - it turns out that the continuation will be aired only in 2024. Since the introductory part is essentially over, then you can expect a real rubilovo - that is, just what many people fell in love with "Game of Thrones" for. The legendary "Dance of the Dragons" has begun. If you are impatient to understand the intricacies of the plot early, pay attention to the book "Fire and Blood", which is officially published in our country. True, this knight's move has its drawback: after reading the book, you will know in advance all the most important and shocking plot twists of the series. Here it is worth considering that sometimes the plot twists in the series differ from the plot twists in the literary source, even though in many aspects the authors of the television incarnation try to follow the canon of George Martin. In general, here, as they say - at your own peril and risk. We have warned you.

Untitled Jon Snow series

Perhaps one of the most anticipated Game of Thrones spin-offs will be dedicated to Jon Snow. In the original series finale, Jon found out that he was part of the Targaryen line, killed Daenerys, defeated everyone and everything, and was banished beyond the Wall. It would seem, where even more? But Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow, thought otherwise. They say that it was he who originally proposed to the HBO management to make a series about his hero. Moreover, Harington expressed a desire not only to play a major role in the project with the working title "Snow", but also to act as a producer. The series has been in development for several years (as long as they worked, in particular, on the "House of the Dragon"), but for some reason it has not yet entered the active stage of production. According to rumors, the process stalled on the scripts.

Frame from the series "Game of Thrones"

"Sea Serpent"

Corlis Velaryon, one of the most colorful (and, as it turned out, important) characters of the House of the Dragon, was nicknamed the Sea Serpent. Velarion is the owner of a huge fleet, on which, among other things, the fate of the Crown depends. And he is also called the best navigator in the history of Westeros. Little is known about the plot of this offshoot of Game of Thrones. Rumor has it that it will become a prequel to "House of the Dragon", that is, it will tell about the events that preceded the Civil War between members of the Targaryen clan. In addition to learning more about Corlis's travels and adventures, details of what happened during the Siege of the Steps mentioned in "The House of the Dragon" will probably be revealed.

Shot from the series "House of the Dragon"

Untitled series about Duncan and Egg

This project is based on three novels by George R.R.R. Martin "The True Sword", "The Hedge Knight" and "The Mysterious Knight". According to rumors, one season is planned for each of these works. The plot will be the story of the adventures of Sir Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. The working title is "Knight of the Seven Kingdoms". Some fans of the Game of Thrones franchise believe that director and screenwriter Brian Helgeland for his 2001 film A Knight's Tale (starring Heath Ledger) borrowed ideas from George Martin's books (in the sense that there is also a plot the squire is knighted by his slain master). True, this version has not yet received official confirmation (as well as denials).

An animated series about Yi-Ti's Golden Empire and two more cartoons

A lot of animated series are planned: three at once. One of them will be dedicated to the Yi-Ti Golden Empire. The working title announced by George R. R. Martin is The Golden Empire. What exactly will be discussed in this animation project is not yet known. The empire itself, as a region or place, was mentioned several times in books. It is said that when Martin designed the Yi-Ti, he was inspired by the history of imperial China. In a blog post in March 2022, he wrote that "there are more than one animated series planned", but he is not allowed to talk about anything. So all that remains is to wait. Animated series, by the way, will be aimed at an adult audience - with all the ensuing consequences (blood, sex, guts).

What will not happen or will happen, but not soon

Blood Moon series

. He was supposed to tell about the events that took place in Westeros long before the unification of the Seven Kingdoms. The authors promised to reveal some secrets that torment fans, including the true story of the origin of the White Walkers.

This is what George Martin said about this series:

"We'll go back about 5 thousand years ago. Then Westeros was completely different. There is no King's Landing, there is no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens here - Valyria is just beginning its rise and has not yet become that powerful empire with dragons. We have dealing with a different, more ancient world, and I hope that this aspect will play into the hands of the series in terms of fascination. "

Naomi Watts was cast in the lead role. A pilot was filmed, which cost a whopping $30 million (the budget of a modest blockbuster). And then the leadership of HBO decided not to give the "Blood Moon" a move. Perhaps they decided that fans would negatively perceive a completely fictional story that does not rely on any books by George Martin, and therefore preferred not to risk it.

Frame from the series "Game of Thrones"

"Ten Thousand Ships"

In this storyline, they planned to tell about a queen named Nymeria, who ruled Dorne, a region located in the southern part of Westeros. In particular, fans of the "Game of Thrones" series could learn about the events that took place a thousand years before Daenerys Stormborn first appeared in the frame. According to the book source, Nymeria, along with her army on ten thousand ships, escaped from the dragon lords of Essos - and hid on another continent. To prevent anyone from trying to escape, she ordered the destruction of the entire fleet.
