Walt Disney - Part 1

Uniquely adept at art as well as commerce, Walt Disney was a master filmmaker who harnessed the power of technology to tell stories of outsiders struggling for acceptance and belonging, while questioning the conventions of class and authority. As Disney rose to prominence and gained financial security, his work became increasingly celebratory of the American way of life that made his unlikely success possible. A polarizing figure - though true believers vastly outnumber his critics - Disney's achievements are indisputable. In this two-part, four-hour film, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE examines Disney's complex life and continuing legacy, featuring rare archival footage from the Disney vaults, interviews with biographers and historians, as well as the animators and designers who helped turn his dreams into reality. Both an inspiring story and a cautionary tale about the price of ambition, Walt Disney offers an unprecedented look at the man who created a world and built an empire.

The language of lying

We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day. And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable. Is there a more direct approach?

2003, Drama, Foreign, Canada

If you are a fan of the dance genre, then the film The Last Dance will definitely appeal to you, especially since Patrick Swayze plays the main role. The story tells the viewer about a dance group where an unexpected and difficult tragedy for the dancers occurred - the head of the ensemble died, even before the world premiere of the production. Former members of the troupe Travis, Max and Krissa come to the aid of the artists.

The dancers decide to take a risk no matter what. They take on the production of a unique and grandiose show that they already worked on seven years ago. Then they were forced to stop working on this composition, but now life gives them a new chance to realize their desires. On the way to their dream, they will have to overcome a lot, but the dream is worth fighting for, isn't it? Not paying attention to the fact that a difficult, sometimes tense relationship arises between a pair of main dancers, during the dance they forget about this, about their past, which constantly reminds them of themselves. Life gave them the opportunity to resurrect not only the production, but also the former feelings between each other. When they start dancing, everything around disappears, nothing exists, there is only a dance, insanely emotional, beautiful and sensual.

Patrick Swayze, known to everyone from Dirty Dancing, only reaffirms how great a dancer he is. Interestingly, his partner in the film was Lisa Niemi, Patrick's wife in real life. She also acted as the director of this picture. Together they made a wonderful and insanely believable game, because their relationship is real, and not just on-screen. This gives the picture an additional zest and arouses great interest among the audience.

Watch the film The Last Dance is definitely worth it. He draws you into his creative atmosphere, it is impossible not to be imbued with it. Here you will see the harmony of movements and music, saturated with strong feelings, make sure that anything can be conveyed through dance. The film is simply amazing. Watching the last dance of good quality online is a pleasure, do not miss this opportunity.

The series from the first seconds lures us with incredible mystical events that occurred at the twelfth hour of October 1, 1989. On this day, 43 completely unfamiliar and unrelated women from different parts of the world gave birth to a child. It would seem, and what is special here? But the most interesting thing is that even at the beginning of the day they were not pregnant. In just a few minutes, their belly grew, and a child was born. The eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreaves decided to find and adopt as many of these children as possible, in the end he managed to get seven.

A little later, we learn that each of them is endowed with supernatural powers. Sir Hargreaves creates the so-called "Umbrella Academy", where he educates, develops and trains new wards. With the help of his team of superheroes, he intends to save the world. Years later, the children grew up and their interests began to differ from the desires of their father, as a result, the academy was disbanded, and everyone went their own way. Everyone has their own problems and life difficulties that the heroes are trying to cope with and adapt to this world. One day they learn about the death of their adoptive father and gather together in the family home. They have to get to know each other again, forget all the insults and omissions and save the world from the impending unknown threat.

To adapt it to the series, the plot, in my opinion, was simply distorted. If it had been shot as a movie, even if it had been stretched into a trilogy, then it would have been much more interesting to watch, and would not have bothered. And so the characters are revealed very quickly, there is no mystery and, literally from the 3rd series, it becomes not interesting to watch.

The soundtracks are well chosen and fit into the series, it looks very epic in tense or action moments, but even this did not save him.

The scenery of the series is rather gloomy and dark, sometimes you need to look closely to see the characters, but the proper feeling of mystery or mysticism does not arise.

The action moments weren't impressive either, they were kind of sluggish or something. Lacks dynamism and emotion.

I would like to note a good and not hackneyed cast. Vanya (Ellen Page), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) and Diego (David Castaneda) fit perfectly into the current picture from the comics. Also, I can't help but mention the excellent performance of Robert Sheehan (Klaus).

Since the second season has already been announced, there are 3 options for the development of events: either the storyline will be dragged out for a long and tedious time, or the writers will come up with a new plot, or Gabriel and Gerard will have to come up with a continuation of the comic.

Expectations were not fully justified, so I'm upset, but still I hope for a good 2nd season.

Fanatic

May 28, 2019

For those who are tired of the current glut of typical superheroes, The Umbrella Academy is the place to be. Steve Blackman's series, based on Gerard Way's Dark Horse comics, immerses you in a strange world from the first seconds and sets its own rules. The series, which consists of 10 episodes, is not an exact repetition of the story that we saw in the comics.

One day in 1989, 43 children were born to mothers who had not been pregnant the previous day. Seven of them were bought out by the eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreaves (Colm Fiore), who trained them at the Umbrella Academy and created a crime-fighting team of sorts and perhaps more. Over the years, most of the members left the academy, but the death of their "father" brought them back to something extremely important.

One of the strengths of The Umbrella Academy is good quality editing.

Let's walk through the characters: Number 1 / Luther (Tom Hopper), lived on the moon for the past 4 years and has super strength; Number 2 / Diego (David Castaneda), imagines himself as a Batman-like superhero, endowed with a talent for throwing knives; Number 3 / Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), a famous actress who can change reality by saying the phrase "there are rumors that ..."; Number 4 / Klaus (Robert Sheehan), a drug addict who can communicate with the dead, but only when sober; Number 5 (Aidan Gallagher), a 13-year-old teenager who traveled to the future and was trapped there for 50 years, then returned to the present in his childhood body; and finally Number 7 / Vanya (Ellen Page), a violinist with no superpowers who was considered mediocre and was never allowed to join her siblings' training. (Number 6 / Ben was killed in an unnamed event before the start of the series). What are the numbers for, you ask? Oh, their father ranked them in order of utility to himself! (The names came later, at random).

The series is fast, quirky and light, although there are real choices and consequences throughout the season. For example, Number 5 is stalked by a mysterious pair of assassins named Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige) who give off strong Fargo villain vibes.

All the characters are now about 30 years old, except for Number 5, who is both an old man and a teenager at the same time. Relationships between group members are always interesting, especially when the charmingly sarcastic Klaus is present. The series skillfully intrigues us: will their relationship get better or will everything go to dust after so many years away from each other?

The first season focuses on the near-future apocalypse witnessed by Number 5, and the mystery of how to stop it. The narrative jumps in time and place, revealing the back stories of how the siblings came to be who they are now and filling in some of the gaps in their collective past. Therein lies part of the fun. Like The CW's Legends of Tomorrow, The Umbrella Academy has a talented cast and intrigue that incredibly complements a series full of humor and compelling drama.

There's also something funny about the series that seems to be taken casually, like the fact that the children were raised by an android mother and cared for by a talking chimpanzee butler.

Experienced viewers will be able to predict some of the twists and turns of the series. However, the interest of The Umbrella Academy is that you can never predict how the story will unfold.

SuperHero

May 23, 2019

To be honest, this whole saga of superheroes fighting to save the world from an apocalyptic catastrophe and sophisticated villains has, to put it mildly, become boring.

So I started watching The Umbrella Academy with caution, hoping that the plot would be fresher than all those comic book adaptations on The CW and other Netflix superhero series like Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. " And, in general, I got what I wanted: a creatively shot series that does not follow the formula, since it is based on a spoiled family, the problem of which lies at the very "root". It has its faults and excesses, but the series nonetheless falls into a place of honor between comedy and drama.

Based on the comics by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance) and artist Gabriel Ba, The Umbrella Academy drew comparisons to various series - the twisted family stage play from Inheritance, the crime scheming from Fargo, the image of the beast from "True Blood" and the tragic artificial intelligence of robots from the "Western World". The novelty of all this is what attracted me, the creator of the series, Steve Blackman, wisely reveals this strange world in small portions. The Umbrella Academy allows us to enjoy every new discovery. By the time Mary J. Blige and Cameron Britton (he was the serial killer Edmund Kemper in Mindhunter) appear as time-traveling assassins named Cha-Cha and Hazel, respectively, I was already completely immersed in the show.

Here are the highlights of the series: on the same day in 1989, 43 women suddenly give birth without being pregnant. The super-rich, cold and inhuman Sir Reginald Hargreaves (Colm Fiore) managed to acquire seven of them, which he named numbers one through seven. He brings them to his massive, art-filled house and rigorously trains them as a crime-fighting team called the Umbrella Academy. His robotic wife Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins) and the chimpanzee butler Pogo (Adam Godley) help him do it.

Number One, whose name is Luther (Tom Hopper, similar to Grant Shaw), has super strength and a powerful bond with his father; Number Two, Diego (David Castaneda), knife thrower; Number Three, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), a celebrity with the power to make "rumors" come true; Number four, Klaus (Robert Sheehan), is haunted by dead people unless he drowns out their voices with booze or drugs, which he often does; and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), who has no other name so is simply referred to as Five, the time traveler. He went missing, and when he returned, set in motion one of the main plots.

Number six is dead, although Klaus talks to him when he's sober. And number Seven is Vanya (Ellen Page), a violinist who doesn't seem to have much authority. Sir Reginald treated Vanya particularly badly, as she was of no use to him, and she wrote a memoir of her life with the Hargreaves family. Her siblings were not happy with the book, to say the least.

The story begins with the death of Sir Reginald. All the children gather in the house and are clearly suffering from rivalry and lost loyalty. Someone killed their father? What is Number Five worried about? Mom acting weird? As these mysteries unravel, Blackman introduces impressive scenes throughout.

For example, in the premiere, we see the five Hargreaves children in their childhood home in separate rooms when the sounds of "I Think We're Alone Now" reach them. And then each of them begins to dance - a dance of stress, a dance of the past, a dance of relief and grief after the death of their father. Another memorable light-hearted musical scene is in Episode 3, when Blige and Britton machine-gun the Hargreaves' house while Klaus, wearing headphones to Nina Simone's "Sinnerman", takes a bath and wanders around the house in nothing but a towel.

Throughout all of this, the pride and ambition of Sir Reginald, who was trying to create his own group of superheroes, slipped through. He made a complete mess in their lives, and now they have to put everything on the shelves, for which, alas, their superpowers are useless.

I think the Umbrella Academy has a bit of rock and roll that appeals to me a lot.

With the influx of superheroes and comic book adaptations on our screens, every new offering has to have something special.

Netflix believes that the eccentric and slightly gothic spirit of The Umbrella Academy will be a magic bullet that will pierce our hearts and grab attention.

Taken from the comics created by Gerard Way, former frontman of My Chemical Romance, the series has been adapted for television by Steve Blackman (Fargo, Legion).

In 1989, 43 girls from all over the world suddenly grow a belly a few minutes before giving birth.

An eccentric billionaire industrialist named Reginald Hargreaves (Colm Feore) adopts seven of these wonderful children. His intention is to start an X-Men type school and use the children's extraordinary powers to save the world.

But, unlike Professor X, he does not seem to be particularly interested in the educational side of the issue. Reggie is a cold person who named the children by numbers: Number One (Tom Hopper), Number Two (David Castaneda), Number Three (Emmy Raver-Lampman), depending on how powerful their abilities are.

In their early teens, the group reveals itself to the world as The Umbrella Academy. All but Number Seven (Ellen Page), whose powers either don't exist or don't manifest.

Shortly thereafter, Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) disappears.

Fast forward to 2019 when the remaining members of the Umbrella Academy gather in their childhood mansion. The emotional tension is so strong that it is beyond words.

The Umbrella Academy does a great job of exposing the problems that come from growing up under Reginald's utilitarian regime, and as a result, neither of them have normal relationships with each other or anyone else.

These are not full-fledged adults with a rich and unhealthy emotional life - they are all dull, traumatized or broken in some way. Especially number Seven, who has spent her entire life on the sidelines.

The story really kicks off when Number Five suddenly appears, previously stuck in the future, in his young 13-year-old body. More importantly, he brings terrible news - the worldwide apocalypse will come in just a few days.

Throughout the series, we can hear amazing soundtracks that masterfully fit into the plot and heat up or relax the atmosphere: "Sinnerman", "Run Boy Run", "I Think We're Alone Now", "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and others.

The Umbrella Academy is a fun, entertaining series with characters that don't fit the hackneyed "serious superhero full of mission and purpose" type.

There is also some madness, like Pogo the talking monkey wearing a tie and glasses.

Even if you've never read comics, don't know anything about superheroes, and the word "kreptonite" doesn't mean anything to you, you should still watch The Umbrella Academy.

First of all, it's a gripping series with lovable "deep" characters, a huge mansion stuffed with art, with an adorable talking monkey and a robotic mother.

Secondly, this is a constant intrigue: the abilities of the heroes are not revealed immediately, but gradually, and this is very addictive. They are hinted at all the time, but we still sit in bewilderment when, in the midst of a spectacular battle, the heroes discuss the importance of "rumors".

Thirdly, this is a manual on how not to raise children. If you suddenly have seven unusual children, you will already know how not to raise them, so as not to die all alone without much sympathy.
