How to praise a student: a short cheat sheet

Praise is a combination of attention to the student with a positive verbal statement. This is an important social reward, which can become an indispensable method of reinforcement, especially in the classroom. Properly used praise increases the likelihood of desired behavior and correct answers in the future, improves relationships with the student and increases his self-esteem. Important things to remember about praise:

When to use praise

Use praise immediately after a correct answer or desired behavior. Like any reward, praise should immediately follow behavior - the shorter the delay, the better;
Praise behavior that is in line with current educational goals;
Praise behavior that you would like to see more often in the future;
Use praise if you notice even a slight improvement in the child's behavior or efforts in the right direction.

Follow the 4 to 1 rule

Effective use of any praise must follow the 4 to 1 rule. This means that for every comment or correction there must be at least 4 instances of praise.

Very often a child receives the teacher's attention only in response to problematic behavior or a mistake. In order to support a child's positive behavior, it is important to praise him much more often than to correct him. It is necessary to purposefully "catch" the student for good behavior and mark him - at least 4 times more often than you make comments to the child.

The praise of students is like a deposit account in a bank. The more often you invest in the account, the more it will be. The more often you praise a student, the better your working relationship will be. If you need to "withdraw funds" - make a negative remark or correct a student, then the "big bill" will stand it, you still have a large margin.

Use Specific Behavioral Praise

Behavioral Specific Praise is a positive statement to encourage the desired behavior that includes: the student's name (or a phrase that tells them they are being praised), a specific description/definition of the behavior, and a phrase of praise.

Examples:

“John, you cleaned up your desk – great job!”

“Well done! You used your stress management skills just in time, Lynn."

“Wait your turn very well” (standing next to the child and looking at him).

“Great, you found all the same pictures” (during a one-on-one session).

Also use non-specific praise

Non-specific praise is a positive statement to reinforce a desired behavior that does not include all of the elements of specific behavioral praise.

Examples:

"John, your desk looks so pretty now."

"You didn't forget your stress management skills, Lynn."

"Alex, you are very well behaved."

Well done.

Thank you.

"Awesome!"

"Very good."

How to use specific behavioral praise

Identify a specific behavior and decide if it should be praised;
Say the name of the student or otherwise indicate that you are addressing him specifically;
Describe the specific desired behavior;
Include a word or phrase of praise in the sentence: good, well done, good job, excellent, amazing, wonderful, very beautiful, just super, wow, you did it, you did a good job, keep it up, etc.
