Songfacts®:
  • The lightest and most radio-friendly song on the Van Halen II album, Warner Brothers Records insisted "Dance The Night Away" be released as the first single. The band didn't think it represented their sound and did not want it released first, but they didn't have the clout to overrule their record company.

  • The original title was "Dance, Lolita, Dance."

  • Van Halen picked up a lot of new fans after this song got some airplay. Many listeners who heard them for the first time were pleasantly surprised when they bought the album, and rushed out to buy the first Van Halen album as well. That first album, which sold about a million copies in America the first year it was released, eventually sold 10 million.

  • Van Halen's tour for the Van Halen II album was the first one they headlined. It was delayed when David Lee Roth hurt his foot performing a jump at the photo shoot for the album.

Hot for the Teacher

" Hot for the Teacher " is a song by the American stone band Van Halen taken from their sixth studio album, 1984 . The song is written by band members Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth, and produced by Ted Templeman. It was released as the fourth and final single from the album in October 1984 and was the last single released by the band's original lineup.

Song features Alex Van Halen with double bass drum performance, and her music video, composed of both adults and young students. Unusually for a single, it starts with a 30 second drum solo followed by another 30 seconds of instrumental intro. The ending of this song is taken from the studio recording of the band's club days called "Voodoo Queen". 9Ol000 (directed by Pete Angelus and David Lee Roth, [4] and produced by Jerry Kramer and Glenn Goodwin, choreographed by Vincent Paterson with concept/arrangement by Anthony Nash) was filmed at 9 John Marshall High School0035 [5] with Phil Hartman doing the voice of Waldo, the video's protagonist. Waldo, a clumsy boy with big glasses and a bow tie, was put on the school bus by his overprotective mother. He is frightened by the naughty kids on the bus; the driver, played by Roth, tells him, "Come on, Waldo!" how the first reels start. "Child versions" of Van Halen, along with Waldo, face the trials and tribulations of elementary school. Two models appear as teachers in the video, Donna Rupert (19'81 Miss Canada runner-up) who plays a chemistry teacher, and Lillian Muller who plays a Phys Ed teacher. [6] Both teachers rip off their dresses, revealing their bikinis, to the applause of the students. The end of the video shows how the children have grown up to become a gynecologist (Alex Van Halen), a sumo wrestler (Michael Anthony), a mental hospital patient (Eddie Van Halen) and a game show host (Roth). While it is said that no one was sure what Waldo grew up to be, the video hints that he became a pimp, the exact opposite of his childhood self. This is punctuated by scenes of the band members dressed in red suits and dancing to the song under a disco ball.

The initial controversy arose when the video showed all of the band members quickly grabbing the crotch during the "... so bad..." part of the chorus; first 1980s NBC late night show Friday night video black

Reception

It was named the 36th best hard rock song of all time by Vh2 in 2009. [7 ] Chuck Klosterman of Vulture.com ranked it as the sixth best Van Halen song, calling it "the epitome of just about everything Van Halen is known for in just five minutes: sports drumming, an extended guitar intro that fades into a fat main riff, vocals that talk more than they sing, two interlocking solos, and lyrics that are technically degrading but somehow come across as non-toxic and unsophisticated." [8]

His Dutch father Jan van Halen (1920–1986) was an accomplished jazz saxophonist and clarinetist. His mother, Eugenia van Beers (1914–2005), was Indo (Eurasian) from Rangkasbitung, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). [5] Alex spent his early years in Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands. [6] The family moved to Pasadena, California in 1962. [5] Alex and his brother Eddie became naturalized US citizens. [7]

Both brothers were trained as classical pianists as children. [8] Although known as a professional drummer, Alex began his musical aspirations as a guitarist when his brother Eddie started playing drums. [5] While Eddie was delivering newspapers to pay for his drum kit, Alex would practice playing them. After spending some time playing Eddie's drum kit, Alex became a more accomplished drummer than Eddie. [9] After Eddie heard Alex Surfaris' mastery of the drum solo on "Destroy", he decided to learn how to play electric guitar. [6] Alex was influenced by Budgie drummer Ray Phillips. [10]

Alex, Eddie and three other boys formed their first group when they were in fourth grade, calling themselves Broken Combs ; they performed at lunchtime at the Hamilton Elementary School in Pasadena, California. [11]

Van Halen graduated from Pasadena High School in 1971. [6] He then took classes in music theory, voice acting, composition and arranging at Pasadena City College for a short while. [6] There Alex met Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth. They formed the band Mammoth, and Alex left Pasadena City College with the others. [12]

      Music career

Alex and Eddie Van Halen had several early bands before Van Halen formed. In addition to The Broken Combs, there were The Space Brothers, The Trojan Rubber Company and Mammoth. [6]

In 1972 the brothers formed Mammoth with Mark Stone on bass and Eddie on vocals. The band rented a public address system from David Lee Roth for their shows. Eddie soon got tired of singing the lead and asked Roth to join the band. Later, in 1974, as the name Mammoth had already been taken by another band, the name was changed to Van Halen and Stone was replaced by Michael Anthony. [13] Roth claimed that it was his idea to rename the band Van Halen, and that he named it after Alex. In addition to his musical duties at the time, Alex performed managerial duties such as booking gigs and the like for the band. Their self-titled debut album 1978 years Van Halen was released with great fanfare, influencing many musicians in hard rock. Since then, Van Halen have released eleven more studio albums and officially disbanded a month after Eddie's death on October 6, 2020. [2]

Although commonly associated with Eddie's guitar, the term "brown tone" was actually coined by Alex to refer to the sound of his guitar. drum. [14]

The only recording Alex made outside of the band was the instrumental "Respect the Wind" (for which the Van Halen brothers were nominated for a Grammy at 1997 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance), [15] featuring Alex on keyboards and Eddie on guitar. The song was written for the 1996 film. Twister and plays during the film's end credits.

      Equipment

Alex Van Halen Ludwig drum set used on Van Halen's first album and supporting tour.

Van Halen supports Ludwig drums, pedals and hardware, Paiste cymbals, Remo drum records and Royal drumsticks. Supporting Paist since March 1983 years old, Van Halen collaborated with Paiste to develop the signature ride plate—A 2002 24" Big ride that Paiste unveiled at the 2010 Winter NAMM show. He also had two of Ludwig's signature traps. Alex has used Rototoms and Octobans in the past , as well as electronic drums, and is famous for using extravagantly sized drum kits with orchestral gongs and four bass drums, originally using only two.0007

      Influences

Van Halen's main influences include Billy Cobham, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon and John Bonham, and he has cited jazz drummer Buddy Rich as an early and lifelong influence. [16]

      Personal life

Van Halen married Valerie Kendall in June 1983 after a two-year engagement. Two months later, the marriage ended in divorce. The first of Van Halen's two sons, Arik Van Halen, was born October 6, 1989; Aric's mother was Van Halen's then-wife, Kelly Carter, whom he divorced on August 1996 years after 13 years of marriage. Van Halen married his current wife, Stina Schiberg, in 2000. She is the mother of his son Malcolm Van Halen. Van Halen is the uncle of Wolfgang Van Halen. [17]

After Father Jan's death in December 1986, Van Halen embraced sobriety in April 1987.
