A history of the Fortnite dance trend, and the top 9 Fortnite dances you should check out. - by Rhys McKay

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 5 years, you’ve probably heard of Fortnite. It’s made appearances all over the news, millions of children play it day in and day out, and it’s even gotten cameos in massive blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame. There’s no denying that Fortnite is one of the biggest cultural phenomena of our generation. In this article, we’re going to take a look at one of its most noticeable cultural artifacts: The Fortnite dances.

What Is Fortnite?

Fortnite is a multiplayer third-person shooter video game by publisher and developer Epic Games. The game was released in 2017, and consists of three separate game modes: Fortnite: Save the World, Fortnite Battle Royale, and Fortnite Creative.

Fortnite Battle Royale is by far the most popular of the three modes. It’s a free-to-play battle royale game in which 100 players battle for survival in a large open-world map.

Players start in a ‘Battle Bus’ that transports them high above the battlefield. They can drop at any one of a variety of locations on the map. Once they hit the ground, they have to scavenge for supplies, build fortifications for defence, and fend off other enemies, all while being pushed ever inward by a storm that spells certain death for players caught in it.

Fortnite has achieved mass popularity, with an estimated 250 million registered players. The game is available on virtually all current-generation gaming platforms, including Windows, Mac, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and even iOS and Android.

What Are Fortnite Dance Moves?

Like many multiplayer video games today, Fortnite features ‘emotes’, which allow players to pose their characters for other players. These emotes range from simple gestures like waving your hand, to complex animations that mimic dance moves.

Some Fortnite dances came with the game when it was new, and more have been added over the past few years. Each Fortnite dance can be purchased with V-bucks, an in-game currency that can be purchased for real money. They don’t give competitive advantages in the game, but they’re fun to pull off, especially when taunting your enemies.

Even without any real gameplay use, the dances have become an incredibly popular part of the game, and in last year’s ‘Fortnitemares’ Halloween event, players were invited to visit gargoyles throughout the map, where they’d strut their stuff with the game’s dance moves in order to complete extra Challenges.

How Did The Trend Start?

While Fortnite dances have been around since the game was launched in mid-2017, the trend of actually dancing these moves in real life only really came around in 2018.

It began on March 30, 2018, when Epic Games launched a contest called the ‘Boogiedown Challenge’, in which players would upload videos of themselves on social media with the hashtag #BoogieDown. The winner of the contest would get their dance recreated in the game as a dance emote, while other winners got V-bucks and cosmetic customisation items for their game characters.

Because of the contest, social media was flooded with videos of children and teenagers showing off their dance moves. Video game media outlets were first on the scene in covering the phenomenon, and then it exploded into the mainstream news.

Today, Fortnite dance videos are incredibly popular, with many dance challenge videos and GIFs of people trying to mimic new dances whenever they come out.

Flossing

The floss dance, also known as flossing, is exactly as its name suggests. Its swinging arm motions from back to front and side to side resemble the act of flossing a giant tooth. The dance was invented in May 2010 by YouTuber Ryan Mayall, and was popularised by ‘Backpack Kid’ Russell Horning, who performed it on an episode of Saturday Night Live alongside Katy Perry.

Turk's Dance

Scrubs - Turk Dance HD

Fortnite’s default dance is known as ‘Dance Moves,’ and is lifted from the dance moves of the character Turk from the series Scrubs, who performs the funky dance in one episode.

Electro Shuffle

BTS and Jimmy Fallon Do the Fortnite Dance Challenge

A classic street dance that made the rounds in Parisian nightclubs, the Electro Shuffle is one of Fortnite’s most iconic dances. It’s popular enough that Jimmy Fallon and K-pop group BTS actually performed it on air!

Robot

The Robot Dance In Fortnite

The jerky, mechanical, and highly flexible moves of the Fortnite Robot dance are a tribute to a dance of the same name that originated in the 1960s. The original Robot became popular when Michael Jackson performed it in 1973 as part of the Jackson 5.

Fresh Dance

Fresh - Fortnite Battle Royale (Dance Emote)

Fans of the classic sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air would instantly recognise Carlton’s wacky moves in Fortnite’s Fresh Dance. The Fresh Dance pays tribute to actor Alfonso Ribeiro’s original dance, which was inspired by Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Murphy’s moves.

Flapper

*NEW* FLAPPER DANCE IN FORTNITE: BATTLE ROYALE!

The Flapper dance is named after the flapper, a generation of women in the 1920s who disregarded the conservative norms of the era, rebelling with makeup, cigarettes, an extravagant lifestyle, and sexual liberation. Flappers were associated with a dance known as the Charleston dance, which involves wide arm movements in sync with dainty, carefree steps, just like the Fortnite Flapper dance.

Orange Justice

The REAL Fortnite Boogie Down Winner: Orange Shirt Kid (Original)

The Orange Justice dance was invented by ‘Orange Shirt Kid’, who submitted the dance as his entry to the Boogiedown Challenge. He didn’t win the actual contest, but his dance was vastly more popular on social media. After much clamouring by fans, Epic finally included the Orange Justice dance in a later patch.

Dance Off!

All these Fortnite dances are fun to pull off, and some require a surprising amount of coordination. You can never go wrong with a bit of exercise in your life, so if you’ve taken a liking to any of these dances, don’t be afraid to strut your stuff!

What are the Fortnite dances and how do you do them?

(Epic Games)

Fortnite continues to be a big part of 2018 pop culture and its not just the gameplay and regular updates that draws attention.

Nintendo Switch 2 will be very different if you listen to the hint from Miyamoto

Many of Fortnite’s dance moves have taken over the internet as kids and celebrities from around the world perform them.

Athletes have used them to celebrate goals and victories and young gamers are performing them at any opportunity.

Here are some of the biggest dances in Fortnite and how you can perform them yourself.

(Epic Games)

Default dance

This was the first dance move to be added to the game and it references the dance made by Turk in the TV show Scrubs.

It is one of the default emotes and is available for all players to use.

It has a bit of a complicated routine and it is best to watch it a few times to learn the rhythm and the movements.

The dance involves a lot of foot moving as well arm movements and finger point, as well as ending with crossed arms.

Orange Justice

This dance move was added as part of the season 4 Battle Pass after fans were disappointed it didn’t win the Boogie Down Challenge.

The competition asked Fortnite fans to submit their own dances with the winner getting their dance added to the game.

Despite not winning the challenge, the kid who submitted his dance won the hearts of Fortnite players everywhere and now has one of the game’s most popular dances.

It’s hard to explain how to do the dance yourself so it might be best watch it a few times first and get the rhythm, but it essentially involves swining you arms around in circular motions while bending and unbending your knees.

Flossing

Flossing has become a hugely popular dance move particularly for kids and while it wasn’t invented by Fortnite it has often been credited to the game.

It involves keeping your arms straight and swinging them back forth forth with one arm in front of you and one arm behind.

The faster you are able to do it, the more impressive it will look.

Llama Bell

This dance is an item shop emote that can be bought for 800 V-Bucks when it is available.

It’s one of the simpler ones you can learn and just involves swaying your hips and moving your legs while hitting a llama bell.

Best Mates

Best Mates is possibly one of the simpler dance moves to pull off.

You raise your upper arms so that they are level with your shoulders and then dangle your lower arms and swing them side to side while lifting your legs up and down in syn with your arms.

It was added to game as tier 63 of the season 3 Battle Pass.

Electro Shuffle

The Electro Shuffle is an emote that can be bought in the item shop for 800 V-Bucks when it is available

It is credited as being originally performed by the YouTuber Gabby J David.

The dance is quite complicated and involves a lot of arm and leg movement, but fortunately Gabby has done her own tutorial on how to do it.

Take the L

This was a tier 31 reward for players who had the season 3 Fortnite Battle Pass.

It involves forming an L shape with your hand and placing it on your forehead and then kicking your legs one after the other.

The dance may have originated from the recent remake of Stephen King’s It as a similar move was performed by Pennywise.

Hype

This dance was a tier 63 reward for the season 4 Battle Pass and it was promoted with the phrase ‘get hyped’.

It involves kicking one of your legs while hopping with the other and at the same time you need to rotate between pretending to ski and pumping your fist up and down.

Fresh

This is based on the Carlton Dance from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which has become a popular move on the internet.

It is available on the item shop for 800 V-Bucks and involves swinging your body and arms from left to right in a fast motion.

Ride the pony

This is one of the older dance moves in the game and was available as a tier 20 reward in the season 2 Battle Pass.

England and Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli did the dance at the 2018 World Cup after scoring a goal against Sweden.

You essentially pretend your riding a pony and alternate between swinging your left and right arms.

Jubilation

Jubilation is one of the cheaper dances available and it can usual be bought in the item shop for 200 V-Bucks.

It involves stamp your feet quickly with your arms straight in the air and slightly rotating your body.

Top popular dances and their origins

Whoever wants to conquer the crowd in front of the bus and tease the opponent on all fours (some manage to fall off the bus in a dance)! All this is possible in the game Fortnite through emotions - dances. Obviously, these game moments set you apart from many other players and, naturally, everyone wants to have as many emotions as possible in their locker. You can be both a merry fellow and the king of the dance floor at the same time. Dropped a legendary weapon from a chest - celebrate this event - dance! You are alone - dance! You are not alone, but you do not see a way out of the situation - use the cherished emotion - there will definitely be a way out!

Whatever dance style you prefer, Fortnite has an emote for everyone! Many dances in the game have a real creator and this is another reason to buy them - to be in the place of a star. We have collected the best of the best in our top, moreover, we have found their authors.

Dances are available for purchase in the Fortnite in-game store for V-bucks and have a quality gradation. Unlike skins, emotes are not legendary, they have only 4 qualities and 4 prices - common (standard dance), uncommon (200 V-bucks), rare (500 V-bucks), epic (800 V-bucks).

Find a dance that suits your style - our list below will help!

    Floss

Dance first performed by Backpack Kid (Russell Horning) on Saturday Night Live with Katy Perry. The guy previously posted his movements on Instagram, but gained wide popularity only after performing with a star. By the way, Russell's parents were unhappy with this "plagiarism" and sued Epic Games. The denouement of the court case is only expected.

Floss was issued as a reward for achievement 49Season 2 Battle Pass level.

    Counterfeit

    One of a kind original

from the series Dance Moves from the Dance Moves 901 to the popular79

It was first performed by Turk (chocolate bear) and is absolutely free in Fortnite as it is the first emote you get in Fortnite! But the actor of the clinic is not happy with such borrowing and has filed a lawsuit against Epic Games for plagiarism. The end of this story, like the last dance, is unknown.

    Electro Shuffle

It is said that the author of this dance is a girl who performs electro-dance at home. Cool moves for 800 V-bucks and no litigation!

    Take The L

Take The L in popular American culture - "accept defeat steadfastly", L in this expression - Loser. Hitting the enemy is now as easy as possible, but in our community the expression has not taken root too much. This gesture was mentioned in the song "All Star" Smash Mouth in the sentence "In the shape of an "L" on her forehead" (Let me know that I was an "L" user), in Team Fortress taunts and in the TV show "Top Gear" with Jeremy Clarkson. The dance "Take The L" is actively used by football players and baseball players.

To become the lucky owner of this emote, you need to find yourself in the 3rd season of Fortnite and reach level 31 of the Battle Pass.

    Keep the hour version!

    Fresh

The "Fresh" dance was first performed on the popular American sitcom "The Prince of Bel-Air" (though inspired by the "Carlton Dance" themselves). A copy of the dance from the 90s can be purchased from the in-game store for 800 V-Bucks!

    Counterfeit

    The unique original

    DISCO Fever

Many are convinced that the emotion of “Disco Faver” was used in the video “Evolution of Dance” by the channel Twist and the emotion was taken from the performance of a dancer in the 70s (the original source was not found, unfortunately). This emote (no matter who created it) can be purchased in the shop for 800 V-bucks.
Let's break away with the characters of Fortnite!

    Rambunctious

The Prince of Bel-Air again! This time the dance is performed by Will Smith himself and quite well! Rambunctious can (and should) be purchased from the Fortnite Store for 500 V-Bucks. kpop Epic Games is often inspired by clips and concerts when creating new emotes. Kpop ah-choo + kpop glass bead they couldn't miss - the girls dance beautifully! The Star Power Emote is owed to the Korean band LOVELYZ and is sold in the in-game store for only 800 V-Bucks. (remember, we are all kawai at heart)

The unique original (here, excuse me)

    Reanimated

NECROPHILIA does not cease to amaze with its fulfillment, and Fornetaite with its confusion. We admire the dance for 800 V-bucks and save our brains!

    BONELESS

We will show the absence of bones (after the zombie they still did not save you)) together with the Boneles dance. This emotion was first demonstrated to the world by Conor McGregor. The fighter was, of course, not as fast as in the Fortnite version, but still worthy of coverage. Can be purchased at the store for 500 V-Bucks.

    Orange Justice

Unfortunately, the Orange Justice dance is not available in the store and was only available in Season 4 of the Battle Pass. There is a wonderful bass boosted version (please don't add it).

    Groove Jam

Needless to say, the "Groove Jam" emote was taken from the movie Napoleon Dynamite? Does anyone else not know this? Now you are aware of everything ... Alas, oh, it is no longer possible to buy - the dance was available to receive during the 4th season of the Battle Pass.
