Stefanie   ·  Stayed August 2022

"This house was perfect for our group of 14! The house was well stocked, with plenty of extra pillows and blankets and was clean and comfortable. Perfect location in Duck, close to all the stores and restaurants and a good distance to the beach. Everyone enjoyed the pool and hot tub with plenty of outside seating poolside and on the multiple decks. Already booked for next year!!"

"This was our first trip to Duck NC and it was amazing! The home was absolutely perfect. Everything was clean which is always my # 1 worry, Spacious enough for 4 families, the pool was perfect and they came and cleaned it while we were there, and it was walking distance to the beach and shops! Definitely follow the owners directions and tips with how to keeps spiders and bugs away because they are plentiful down there. We will definitely be back!"

Jeanine   ·  Stayed August 2021

"We had twelve people with us and we didn’t even feel like we were in top of each other. It was absolutely PERFECT! The house was extremely clean, very nicely decorated, and walking distance to everything! We did not need our vehicles for anything except going to Food Lion for stuff for the week. The pool and hot tub were a huge hit and the pool table was the kids favorite thing. They also had board games the kids played at night before bed. Sweet T’s is an adorable shop to get drinks or coffee. They have live music in different areas that are kid friendly. Our family created memories that will let us a lifetime. This vacation we can all say we did not want to leave. You will not be disappointed in The Dancing Duck if you stay there. Highly recommended!!! We will be back for sure."

Melissa   ·  Stayed July 2021

"Second time staying here. Beautiful, Well stocked home. What a great week!"

Debra   ·  Stayed June 2021

"This house is very spacious and well laid out. We had four families, thirteen people, in our group and the second floor had plenty of space for our two families of four with room to spare. The other five people stayed on the upper floor. We didn’t even need the sleep sofa on the lower level. The main living areas easily accommodated us all. Everyone enjoyed the private pool very much and the owners have a nice supply of pool toys available. The kitchen was well-equipped, too. The walk to the beach is a bit far for young kids, but it’s doable with strollers or a wagon and there’s also a bike rack. Parking is very limited by the beach access. It’s a short walk to shops and the boardwalk by the sound, in the other direction, which was very convenient. We had a great time and were very pleased with the Dancing Duck and highly recommend it!"

Response:
Thank you for the kind review! We are so happy you enjoyed your stay and hope you and your family return.

Heather K   ·  Stayed December 2020

"The Dancing Duck is a wonderful home and we thoroughly enjoyed our one week stay. The home was exceptionally clean, beautifully decorated and very inviting. The location and proximity to Duck is perfect. We walked everywhere and only moved the car once! Although there were only two of us, the floor plan of the home would be great for several couples with children. The screened porch was nice for rainy days! Check in was a breeze, as it always is with Twiddy! Thank you for an enjoyable and relaxing "change of scenery" we look forward to returning!"

Dance of little ducklings

The world musical literature knows many cases when a composer gained world fame only by one work. A good example of this can be such famous musical pieces as Mikhail Oginsky's Polonaise or Vittorio Monti's Czardas . However, sometimes it happens quite differently: everyone is familiar with this or that composition, but who is its author is unknown to many. This happened with a song popular all over the world, which in our country is called the "Dance of the Little Ducklings." It was composed by a talented musician - an accordionist from Switzerland, Thomas Werner, however, unfortunately, not everyone knows this.

Read the history of the creation of " Dance of the little ducklings ", as well as interesting facts, text and content of the composition on our page.

A Brief History

Many people think that the composition popular all over the world, which is known in our country as "Dance of the Little Ducks", is a French folk song. In fact, this is an erroneous opinion, since the funny melody has an author, and he lives in Davos, Switzerland. This city, in addition to the famous mountain resort, is famous for its excellent cafes and restaurants, and in one of these establishments at the beginning of the second half of the last century, young musician Thomas Werner entertained visitors by playing the accordion and harmonica.

To make it more enjoyable for the public, Thomas himself composed various cheerful melodies, and in the mid-fifties, a motive came to his mind, which was distinguished by a particularly groovy character. The musician did not immediately present his new composition to the audience: he constantly postponed the premiere performance of the melody, although he often returned and finalized it.

Only in 1963, Werner demonstrated the melody to the public for the first time and at the same time noticed that people, hearing it, involuntarily began to move. It was then that the author of the composition decided to come up with a dance with simple, but funny and easy-to-remember movements for the music.

There is no doubt that Werner, living near a ski resort, often watched the skiers go down the slope. It was amusing for Thomas to watch the skiers, which evoked in him associations with soaring birds, but some of the movements of the athletes reminded him of the clumsy ducks that the young man looked after in his household. Such observations led Thomas to combine the characteristic movements of the beak, wings and tail of birds with his playful melody and call the composition "Duck Dance". Perhaps the melody-dance would have amused only visitors to Swiss restaurants, if in winter 19For 73 years, a Belgian music producer named Louis van Reymenant did not come to Davos to ski. He went to dine at the hotel restaurant where he stopped to rest and, seeing Thomas Werner's unusual dance there, was very impressed with him. Having memorized the melody and subsequently coming up with words in Dutch for it, the producer under the pseudonym Terry Rendall, with the help of a musical group collaborating with him, made an electronic cover version of the composition and recorded a single called "Chip-Chip", which he sold within a year one million copies. A little time passed and the American continent got acquainted with the composition, for example, under the name "Bird Dance" it was constantly played on the local Ohio radio.

An even greater contribution to the popularization of the composition was made by the Dutch group "De Electronica's". The instrumental version of the melody recorded by the ensemble in 1980, called “Dance of the Little Birds”, was placed on the second side of the disc, however, DJs from discos and radio stations preferred it, thereby turning the composition into a hit, instantly gaining immense popularity in Europe and occupying the highest lines in hit parades. As a result, in many countries they began to invent words for the “Dance of the Ducklings” and enliven various events with it: from friendly parties to sports competitions.

The composition was brought to the Soviet Union in 1981 by the famous Italian duo Al Bano and Romina Power. Since the song instantly spread throughout the country, the need arose for a Russian-language version, which was composed by the poet Yuri Entin, and in 1984 performed by the folklore ensemble of Vladimir Nazarov.

Interesting facts which almost always has bird names: "Chicken Song", "Chicken Dance", "Chicken Dance", "Duckling Dance", "Little Ducklings in a Row", "Funny Bird", "Bird Dance", "Ducks", "Chicken dance", "Song of birds".

  • It should be noted that the "Dance of the Ducks" is the drinking song of the world's largest folk festival, which is Oktoberfest, and not only in its homeland in Munich, Germany, but also at other beer festivals held today around the world.
    • Despite the popularity of "Dance of the Ducklings", this music, according to a survey conducted at the beginning of this century by one of the music sites, is considered by many listeners to be the most annoying. The Canadian radio station CIHT-FM drew a certain conclusion from this and used it in a peculiar way to conduct a charity event. To collect the necessary amount to help the Ontario Children's Hospital, the famous melody sounded on the waves of the station for several hours in a row without interruption.
    • In 1994, the first world record was set at the American Oktoberfest in Cincinnati, which was subsequently entered into the Guinness Book of Records. Forty-eight thousand participants of the festival simultaneously danced "Chicken dance" at this holiday.
    • Subsequently, records for the number of performers of the "Chicken Dance" began to be set with enviable regularity. So in 2010 in the United States, during the celebration of Independence Day in the city of Mandan, the dancers of the famous composition lined up in a line that exceeded the length of two and a half kilometers.
    • Thomas Werner's "Duck Dance" is more commonly referred to as "Chicken Dance" in the Americas. The fact is that one German musical group, performing at a festival in the American city of Tulsa, decided to entertain the audience with this cheerful composition, but there were no duck costumes, and the artists had to put on what they had, that is, costumes depicting chickens.
    • Thomas Werner was first listed as the author of the famous melody in a recording by the Dutch group De Electronica's made in 1980 year. Prior to this, only arrangers were indicated on the records, shifting the melody to their taste.

Content and text of the Little Duckling Dance

Little Duckling Dance. This cheerful dance composition includes three verses, and in accordance with the typical song structure, each of them is accompanied by a chorus. The verse of the "Dance" consists of two square eight-bar periods, which almost completely, with the exception of the last bars, thematically repeat the other. Constantly repeating sounds give a special fervor and cheerfulness to an uncomplicated rhythmic melody. The melody of the chorus is completely opposite in character to the previous melodic material in the verse. It is melodic, expressive and singsong, as it is based on wide interval moves that bring it closer to folk motives. It should also be noted that the harmonization of the "Dance" is surprisingly simple: it includes only two functions: the tonic and the dominant.

    Dance of the little ducklings.

To the melody of the couplet, four simple movements are performed that represent a bird.

    1. The dancers raise their bent arms and, imitating a “beak”, unclench and squeeze their fingers to the rhythm of the music.
    2. Then, without changing the position of the hands, the dancers wave their elbows - these are bird's "wings".
    3. Performers, slightly crouching, twirl their tails.
    4. Everyone rises and clap their hands.

You need to spin to the melody of the chorus either alone or with a partner.

" Dance of the little ducklings ". This simple but contagious song-dance, created more than seventy years ago, still entertains the participants of children's matinees, school discos, as well as various adult holidays. From the first sounds, it lifts people up and, regardless of the number of years they have lived, makes them move energetically, flapping their “beaks”, “wings”, and twisting their “tails” with pleasure. Perhaps from the outside it looks a little ridiculous, but the dancers have fun and this is the most important thing.

    Dancing little ducklings

Dancing little ducklings is a childhood hit! Internet publication "Elements of Dance"

Perhaps the "Dance of the Little Ducklings" is the most international children's dance on Earth. A cheerful song about ducklings is sung in Japan and Iceland, Spain and Hungary, Bulgaria and England. Perhaps it is precisely because the melody has become so widespread that it seems that its roots go back to the deep past, and its creation is often attributed to the French people. However, the conclusion is erroneous: the melody, like the corresponding dance, has its own author - Thomas Berner, a Swiss from Davos. This accordion and harmonica player wrote it at 1957, but only 16 years later, a record was released with a melody that instantly conquered the world. As you can see, the dance, which has already become traditional and almost folk, is actually quite young.

The popularity of the cheerful song was facilitated by the fact that pop stars did not pass it by: Al Bano and Romina Power presented their version of the children's hit, and in 1982 the song was translated into English by Bob Kames - in his version, the name of the hit sounds like "chicken dance ". As for the well-known text, which is now being performed in our kindergartens, we must thank Yuri Entin for it.

But if the sound of words, and sometimes the meaning of the text, change depending on the language into which the song is translated, then the language of the dance is unchanged, and its movements do not leave anyone indifferent. Even adults, unable to resist, start dancing with the children, and then there is no limit to the fun. After all, to become like a cheerful duckling, you just need to learn a few simple steps and arm yourself with a good mood. And believe me, a good mood will turn into just great, as soon as you fall under the spell of this music.

“Dance of the Little Ducklings”, in fact, consists of only four movements alternating during the sound of the verse and a move in a circle during the chorus. Real ducklings must connect all the most "duck" that they have: beaks, wings and tails, otherwise the dance will fail. The beak can be perfectly depicted by folding the palms together and raising them, which we do at the very beginning of the song. Then the duck dancer bends his arms at the elbows and presses them to the body several times, as if flapping his short wings. Now a little twist: we shift from paw to paw and shake ourselves off like a chick that has just emerged from the pond. And all you have to do is clap your hands. One after the other movement is repeated during the dance.
