How to dance the Minuet for Beauty and the Beast a historically accurate princess dance

Do you love a good story? I do. Beauty and the Beast is a classic French fairy tale, and Belle has always been one of my favorite heroines. She loved books and dance, just a few of my favorite things. My favorite scene is when Belle and Beast waltzed around the ballroom in each other’s arms.

Beauty and the Beast is set in the end of the Baroque period in France. Like all good stories, the tale can be traced back to antiquity, but the tale we know today was a French fairy tale.

About the Dance

The dance Beast and Belle do in the animated Disney version is a Viennese waltz, a dance of the Victorian period. I started to wonder what dance beauty and the beast would have done for the Baroque period that their tale was set in. Then it hit me that the iconic dance of the Baroque era in France was the Minuet. It was named the “queen of the ball”

Minuet Origin

The Minuet developed from the Branle of Poitou. It is first referenced in 1670 in the French court of King Loui XIV in Versailles.  The name Minuet means small, and referred to the small steps taken in the dance.  It was a stately exhibition ballroom dance often performed facing the most noble guests and danced one couple at a time to enable the partners to display their elaborate attire. I have put together a tutorial on how to dance the Minuet for Beauty and the Beast.

Film Location

To film this dance tutorial, I enlisted the help of the Grant-Humphrey’s Mansion in Denver.  This Neo-classic building was built in 1902 for Colorado governor Grant, following his term as the third governor of Colorado. It is now a historic building maintained by the city of Denver; available for tours and events.

1-Both partners step forward right foot
2-tap left behind right as you bend (plie) you knee

David Bintley continues to be the most creative English choreographer, working in an absolutely classical manner. People with such interests as Bintley's have long since disappeared, not only in England, but all over the world. Few people can now love the tradition of plot ballet so much and so carefully patronize and enrich it with their works. Bintley is also valuable because he constantly orders new music for his performances from composers and thus finds like-minded people everywhere. He was not at all broken by the move from the capital to industrial Birmingham. He was very sad about this, but he got used to it. Apparently, if you have something to say in art and you can find money for staging, then you can live and work anywhere. Let me remind you that the "Birminghams" were previously considered a resident company in the Sadler's Wells Theater and, although they retained the status of the royal ballet, they lost the capital's base. That is, the choreographer and artists live and work in Birmingham, and perform, as before, all over England, including at the Sadler's Wells Theatre.

This autumn's hit was Beauty and the Beast, which Bintley revived after its premiere in 2003. Oddly enough, but the extravagant French fairy tale came out of the hands of Bintley as a wonderful children's ballet. The music for it was specially written by the British Glen Boer. The choreographer was not embarrassed that he chose not the most abandoned plot. Neither Cocteau's film nor the popular Disney cartoon (https://kinofanat.net/mult/) confused him. He went straight from the text and succeeded by making a children's play with an instructive ending. He started traditionally - a girl named Beauty (performed by Ambra Vallo) was rereading her favorite fairy tale about the prince in her father's library and did not notice how she fell asleep. The scene is sustained in the best traditions of the English Gothic novel: an ominous dark room with shelving, a dim lamp and high leather chairs. Let it be invented and simpler than in the Nutcracker ballet, but it is more understandable for local children, who, by the way, make up an enviable majority in the auditorium. And Beauty dreams of a two-act ballet - in the first part we find out why the Prince was punished and turned into a beast, in the second we observe the metamorphosis that occurred with the Prince and Beauty as a result of patience and endurance, and we understand that behind the faceless words “then they lived for a long time and happily and died on the same day ”can be a wise and instructive story.

It is clear that Bintley does not invent new movements - in classical ballet everything has already been invented. However, he does not get tired of inventing interesting connections and combinations, and very successfully. He abundantly quotes Ashton, and Macmillan, and Cranko, but not at the level of stupid copying, but at the level of individual techniques. A professional, well-watched eye notices everything - it sees where it came from and why, but a new audience always comes to the theater and wants to see not modern barefoot dance, but ballerinas twirling fouettes on pointe shoes, and dancers jumping rounds. The Beast's solo is noteworthy - it comes out almost like Abderakhman in Yuri Grigorovich's Raymond. Dancing animals are also a purely English theme. They danced with Ashton, Bintley's teacher, in huge numbers, and the audience loves it. Pleasing his audience, the choreographer does not miss the opportunity to stage dances for the Prince's comrades, who, just like him, were turned into animals for pride and dance with animals for most of the ballet. And the Prince himself turned not just into a Beast (performed by Tiron Singlon), like Cocteau, and not into a specific animal, but into a kind of collective animal monster, similar to all terrible animals at once (wolf, fox, boar). When the ballet was staged and the small troupe was busy rehearsing from morning to evening, Bintley, saving the artists time, agreed that the portrait of the Beast, followed by the manufacture of a mask, should be made from himself. Thus, he expressed sympathy for all the innocent animals, whose name is given to bad people. In his performance, the beast turns out to be better than a man, and only after serving his duty in an animal skin and experiencing universal hatred and neglect, a creature born of a man confirms his right to be called a man. I don’t know if children understand this morality, but they obviously like ballet.

The miracle of Hanukkah: will the beauty fall in love with the beast?

Hanukkah is approaching, and with it many performances for children and adults. Theater groups and entreprises strive to impress both the youngest spectators and those who are older with bright and colorful performances.

The country's main choreographic troupe, the Israeli Ballet, has prepared for the winter holidays a new performance, Beauty and the Beast, based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault. We are more familiar with this fairy tale from the brilliant interpretation of the world plot by the Russian writer Sergei Aksakov called "The Scarlet Flower". The plot of a girl who fell in love with a monster is one of the most beloved and widespread in world literature, and its roots are lost in ancient times. It is believed that the story of Cupid and Psyche, written by the ancient Roman author Apuleius, formed the basis for future interpretations of Beauty and the Beast.

Subsequently, similar stories were published in the 16th and 18th centuries, and the most famous version was the 1991 Disney cartoon. As for the ballet interpretations of the fairy tale, the first performance on this subject, which included elements of opera and ballet, took place in France in 1771.

Let's return to the current production of the Israeli Ballet. Beauty and the Beast was directed by the English choreographer David Nixon, who currently directs the Northern Ballet in Leeds, England. Nixon uses the music of Bizet, Saint-Saens, Poulenc, Glazunov and Debussy for his production and creates a fairy-tale world on stage, woven from dance, unusual scenery and luxurious costumes.

We bring to your attention a video fragment of the rehearsal of the performance "Beauty and the Beast" in the Israeli Ballet.

Nixon's choreographic style combines classical and modern elements. Despite their heterogeneity, the pattern of the dance is organic and transparent, and the whole production looks in one breath. Using a metaphor, we can say that the style of Marius Petipa is learned by heart, but at the same time it is a modern fantasy ballet fairy tale, with luxurious costumes invented by Nixon himself, who included elements of high fashion from Givenchy and Christian Dior in the costume design, details of extravagant luxury and special style. “When I got the opportunity to create my own ballet, I knew I wanted to tell a story that people could identify with,” says the choreographer. “Reading a number of versions made me think about the concept of beauty: is it really hidden inside us or visible from the outside?”

There have been big changes in the Israeli ballet in the last year. Berta Yampolsky and Hillel Markman led this group for 45 years, and thanks to their perseverance and enthusiasm, the appearance of a classical troupe in our country became possible. This year they have been replaced by a new artistic director, Ido Tadmor. This young Israeli choreographer has breathed new life into the country's premier ballet company, and his arrival is associated with great hopes and ambitious plans for the future.

First of all, it should be remembered that in such a small country like Israel, it is impossible to support the work of a huge ballet troupe. Unlike Russian and European theaters, where the number of artists can reach two hundred, the Israel Ballet team consists of only 28 dancers, but each of the artists has immeasurably more opportunities for promotion and building a creative career. Among the artists of the Israeli Ballet there are many repatriates who received choreographic education in the countries of origin. In recent years, a new generation of artists from among the native Israelis has grown up, who from childhood have been "infected" with the virus of classical ballet and have decided to link their lives with dance. In addition, the Israeli Ballet, like all ballet companies in the world, has foreign contract dancers.

Ido Tadmor is confident that he will be able to bring a young audience into the halls. To do this, he stages new ballets himself and invites world-famous choreographers from abroad for the most daring and innovative performances. At the same time, he is very careful about the classical heritage of world ballet. In the new performance "Beauty and the Beast", which will premiere on the days of Hanukkah, it is clearly seen that all the artists of the leading Israeli choreographic troupe are fluent in the basics of classical ballet.
