How to dance reggaeton videos

Videos - Bailando Journey

For each dance that I learn in my journey, I make a video. Throughout the Bailando Series, you will see my dance technique gradually improve, confidence increase, and videos get more creative.

Bailando Series: Reggaeton

Hours of class: 10. Three and a half months into my journey.

Dancing Reggaeton with dancers from Coabey Dance Academy in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where I spent a week working on a basic routine to a mash-up of hits by Puerto Rican artists.

Bailando Series: Merengue

Hours of class: 0. Three months into my journey.

Dancing Merengue, the national dance of the Dominican Republic, in Santo Domingo. Every Sunday evening in the ruins of San Francisco in Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial, musicians from the Grupo Bonyé perform to a crowd of locals and curious foreigners that dance merengue and other rhythms into the night. I didn’t take any classes, but instead learnt Merengue just by dancing in the streets!

Bailando Series: Bachata

Hours of class: 8. Three months into my journey.

Dancing Bachata at the iconic Lucía 203 in the heart of Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial in Dominican Republic with my incredible teacher Nathanael Vasquez from the Centro de Danza Belkis Sandoval.

Bailando Series: Cubatón

Hours of class: 1. Eleven weeks into my journey.

Dancing Cubatón with Tierra Kaliente, one of Cuba’s best dance groups in el Malecón – Havana, Cuba. Cubatón is Cuban Reggaeton, which tends to have a slightly different rhythm to Puerto Rican Reggaeton and draws more heavily from Cuban influences.

Bailando Series: Cuban Son

Hours of class: 6. Eleven weeks into my Journey.

Dancing Son Cubano (or Cuban Son) with my incredible teacher Yosnel Herrera on the rooftops of old Havana. Son is probably the most distinctively Cuban to the ear, and seen by many as the predecessor to Salsa. Thanks to Baila habana, I was able to learn this romantic dance.

Bailando Series: Cuban Salsa

Hours of class: 20. Eleven weeks into my journey.

Dancing Cuban Salsa with Yosnel Herrera in the iconic Hotel Florida in Havana, Cuba. Thanks to Baila Habana, a social project that supports Cuban dancers, I was able to learn Cuban Salsa to this level in an intensive course in just 5 days.

Bailando Series: Day of the Dead

Hours of class: 0. Two months into my journey.

El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, falls on the 2nd November and is celebrated to remember those who are no longer with us. This skeleton dance to the song ‘Bailando’ was entirely improvised, and after my professional dance partner had an accident, we had to choose a random skeleton in the park who would agree to dance with me. It was also my first attempt at some more serious video editing – a really fun creative experience!

Bailando Series: Sones de Betaza

Hours of class: 8. Two months into my journey.

Dancing Mexican folkloric dance on stage! It’s easy to spot me, I’m the only girl in the guy’s row! Such an honour as to be so warmly included join in this show with the Instituto de Danza Mizoc! This dance, called “Sones de Betaza”, was performed among others to celebrate the Instituto de Danza Mizoc’s 49th Anniversary. It is usually performed as part of a “Guelagatza” – an annual indigenous cultural celebration in Mexico’s state of Oaxaca.

Bailando Series: Jarabe Tapatío

Hours of class: 8. Six weeks into my journey.

Dancing the Jarabe Tapatio, Mexico’s national dance also known as the “Mexican Hat Dance”, with Osvaldo Santos at Mexico’s world-renowned Ballet Folklórico de Mexico de Amalia Hernández. Popularised in the 19th Century, the dance represents courtship, with the woman at first refusing the man’s advances until she receives his hat.

Bailando Series: NY Salsa

Hours of class: 1. Ten days into my journey.

The first in a series to document my dance journey, this video is a first attempt to dance New York Salsa with Ismael Otero, a prominent dancer and instructor on the New York dance scene. What differentiates NY Salsa from other styles is that it is danced “on 2”, or on the second beat of the music, with the follower stepping forward first. Rather than travelling while dancing, both partners dance within a limited space while facing each other most of the time. I took just one hour of class with Ismael to prepare this video, but had taken several group classes beforehand.

Bailando Series: Cha Cha/Boogaloo

Hours of class: 9. Three days into my journey.

Diving into the deep end! My first time on stage, an audience of 800 people at one of the world’s most important salsa events, and one of the most complex routines I ever learnt! Infiltrating the group alongside experienced dancers, including professionals, you can spot me hiding at the back to the right.

Reggaeton was rather coolly received in Europe and was especially criticized by the older generation. And this is not accidental: after all, the dance is based on the close and intimate contact of the bodies of two partners, and, perhaps, this dance will even seem to some too cheeky and sexy. However, in the countries where reggaeton originated, such movements are considered quite normal and decent, and even 14-year-olds dance the dance.

If you want, you can always find reggaeton video and see how this dance looks from the outside. From an objective point of view, we can say that it looks beautiful and expresses the mutual love of partners for each other. In addition, the abundance of active movements undoubtedly has a positive effect on the health and figure of the dancers.

Reggaeton is a difficult dance and it is difficult to learn it alone. The ideal option would be to visit a dance school where you can learn reggaeton. Well, if this is not possible, then you can use reggaeton videos as educational material, which can now be found in great numbers on the World Wide Web.

Reggaeton is considered by many to be an offshoot of hip hop, the only difference being the predominantly Spanish language of the songs used for the dance. However, this is not true: reggaeton has a slightly different rhythm, and it has managed to absorb many genres.

Reggaeton video lessons

Reggaeton is a mixture of many dance and music genres. It was influenced by hip-hop, rap, Jamaican and Panamanian reggae, etc. This dance could not be called reggaeton, if not for the special music. After all, initially it arose precisely as a musical direction, and not as a dance. Many still do not recognize reggaeton as a dance, but consider it only music.

In music, the basis is rap chants, which are usually read in Spanish (after all, the style originated in Panama and Puerto Rico, where it is common). Reggaeton has its own rhythm, which a knowledgeable person can easily distinguish from the rhythm of hip-hop or any other style.

As already mentioned, reggaeton has always been criticized for being too intimate. However, there is no actual touch as such in reggaeton, only hints. So most of the charges in this regard can be dropped. After all, what could be wrong with a loving couple expressing their feelings by dancing to good music?

By the way, nothing particularly definite can be said about the music. Now about 200 performers around the world work in the reggaeton genre, and each has a unique style. Of course, among these 200 there will be one whose songs you will like.

Mostly young people and girls aged 20-35 years old dance reggaeton and attend reggaeton parties. However, no one sets strict age limits, and you can learn reggaeton at any age. The only thing you need is to attend a dance school or practice regularly, using reggaeton video lessons as an add-on. Both are now available to almost everyone.

You can feel the spirit of Latin America without visiting it. Modern and active dances, such as reggaeton and booty dance, will help you with this. Just be confident and achieve your goals!

Reggaeton is one of the most famous dances in the world, which is performed to Latin American music in the rap or hip-hop genre. This dance is performed by both men and women. Often reggaeton is danced in pairs, however, this dance is still considered solo. In order to be able to sensually perform reggaeton, it is necessary to free your body from stiffness and physical tension. To do this, it is necessary to carry out daily exercises to stretch and warm up the muscles, it is especially important for women to work out the flexibility of their hips. Such exercises can be performed at home without resorting to the help of a gym.

It must be understood that the effectiveness of classes depends primarily on how often a student attends classes. Come to classes more often and enjoy them - this will help you master reggaeton faster!

MASTER CLASS

Closed groups in our school are formed for 8-12 lessons. Often we hold special choreographic shows with video recording. If you wish, you can always take part in these events, and for more information, you can call by phone to find out about the conditions for participation.

HOW TO LEARN TO DANCE REGGAETON?

During the dance lessons you will learn the sequence of reggaeton elements and learn its movements (perreo, flow, dembow, etc.). Lessons will help you feel the music with your soul. You will be able to fully experience your body and learn to control it. These classes are suitable even for beginners. All conditions are created in the classes so that you feel all the features of this direction.

HISTORY OF REGGAETON

In the 70s of the last century in sunny Panama and Puerto Rico, the musical style of the same name first emerged, influenced by hip-hop, rap, reggae and dancehall. The songs are characterized by rhythmic melodies combined with recitative, usually in Spanish. It is not surprising that the new music gave birth to the dance that is popular today - it was impossible to sit still.

The dance borrowed a little from the measured reggae. He is aggressive and defiant. This is a peculiar way to express your protest using only body language. This style is a concentrate of sexuality. Sharp and even immodest movements allow you to maximize your mood and personality. Both girls and men can dance it.

In the USA, this dance direction became known at the end of the last century. It was brought with them by Jamaican emigrants. It soon gained popularity among Latin Americans. They danced reggaeton at special discos, which were arranged mainly at night. The heyday of the style occurred in the 90s - then it was associated with drugs, poverty and hooliganism. Discos took place in disadvantaged immigrant neighborhoods and were often suppressed by the police.

The opinion of the American government has changed after a decade. It received the status of an official style in the world only in 2006 (in Puerto Rico this happened 11 years earlier). Reggaeton owes its positive image to DJs, among them the cult Gerardo Krueta.

Today there are several directions:
• Panama;
• Puerto Rican;
• Cuban;
• American.

The most common Puerto Rican destination. It is he who can be seen in the clips of Latin American performers. It organically combines rhythms of reggae and hip-hop. The Panamanian style was formed under the influence of Jamaican melodies - it is more authentic and colorful. The Cuban form of this dance is called cubaton - it intertwines Caribbean and African motifs. The American direction originated in the heart of New York in the circle of Latin American rappers.

Reggaeton style Reggaeton

Movement in this style follows beats and melody as well as lyrics. This style of dance is quite dynamic and strong and reveals the dancer's sexuality.

Reggaeton Fusion Reggaeton fusión

This is a fairly free style of reggaeton. Reggaeton fusión has no clear boundaries and allows you to combine many different genres of dance: hip-hop, salsa, etc.
