Re: How To Dance Makossa? by bluenubian(f): 2:45am On Sep 05, 2006 |
if u watch em closely u should be able to do it, makossa is not very different from our traditional dances, jus some moves make each kind of dance distinct, its also like dance hall reggae, jus try the basic move then as u keep doing it, u throw in more moves. don't try throwning yourself on the floor yet. all those crazy moves will fall into place the more u do it and get comfortable. |

Makossa - frwiki.wiki
Makossa type of music from Cameroon. It was originally an exclusive part of the Duala culture, but is now accepted as popular music throughout the country. It is similar to souks, but with more bass and brass. It originates from the traditional dance sava, Ambas Bay, with significant influences from jazz and Caribbean music, from Latin American music to highlife and rumba. This urban musical style is one of the four main rhythms of Cameroon along with bikutsi, mangambeu and assiko.

Etymology
The expression Makossa comes from the DOUALA word Kosa , which literally means " peel!" . In a musical context, it is used as an invitation to dance. For the first time it would have been said by the artist Nelle Eyum at 1950s The word used as a noun ( dikosa ) and put in the plural gives makosu.
In issue 324 of the Afrique-Asie, published on Monday Francis Beebe says the following: “Closely associated with the city of Douala, makossa, like jazz, has no independent significance. The most common translation is semantic, <
History
Makossa's roots lie in the Sawa culture and its many musical styles, aided by widespread access to electricity and new musical equipment. Makossa was finally able to appear in the early 1950s. Makossa style was born in the 1950s, the first recordings were not made until ten years later. Artists such as Eboa Lotin, Miss Ngoh and especially Manu Dibango popularized the genre outside of Cameroon in the late 1960s. In addition, the many recreational areas where local liquor could be sipped offered local musicians the opportunity to express themselves. What made Makossa so successful in the early days was his ability to absorb and combine different musical genres. Thus, the influence of the Congolese rumba played a decisive role in the transformation of Makossa. Thanks to the all-powerful "Radio Leopoldville", rumba has become the most widely broadcast street music in Cameroon. In particular, the phrasing of the guitar in Makossa is inspired by the phrasing of the Congolese rumba. During the years of German and French colonization, the ideal of many was to become assimilated, which means to free themselves from the slags of a pure tribe. Guitarists who "travelled" return from Equatorial Guinea (little Paris) and the two Congos with rumba ideas (Golden Sword, etc.). It's modernity that meets Cabasele's L'African Jazz and Franco of OK Jazz of Congo. Together with the pie dancers returning from the sale of the fish of the day, they create the first fruits of what will be called makossa; a dance requiring imposing movements of the back, which religious people do not tolerate too much.
Other rhythms had a very big influence on Makossa. Among others, we can quote: Merengue from the Dominican Republic and High-Life from Ghana and Nigeria. Thus, makossa is a syncretism of various rhythms and influences. Thus, by combining these different rhythms with popular dances, groups such as Negro-Style, Uvocot Jazz (Union of Coastal Voices), Rythmic Band and Los Calvinos with Lobe Rameau, Mouel Guillaume, Ebanda Manfred, Nelle Eium at the helm helped establish Makossa as a standard musical style. Thus, makossa is the result of both internal and external influences.
If we had to synthesize makosa into a mathematical formula, it could be: Bolobo + Essevé + Assico Congolese + Merengue + Social life = Makossa.
The original Makossa was subsequently varied and adapted to rhythms fashionable for centuries. Thus, towards the end of the 60s, he was enriched by the integration of funk elements, the result of the Funky-disco influence on the music of James Brown, who in a few years would himself be a plagiarism of the singer André-Marie Tall. It was Manu Dibango who paved the way in 1972 with his Soul Makossa, which was a worldwide success and made Makossa famous all over the world. Inspired by Manu's example, several Cameroonian artists are integrating new rhythms into Makossa. It's like: Funky Makossa, Disco Makossa, Salsa Makossa, Soukouss Makossa, Jazz Makossa, Reggae Makossa, etc.
