His impact on dance has been just as powerful. Fans around the world have tried to imitate his smooth slides and spins, his racy crotch grab and pelvic thrust and, of course, his trademark moonwalk, with varying degrees of success.
But there’s one move that stunned the watching world: the gravity-defying tilt he debuted in his 1988 music video for “Smooth Criminal.” In one scene, Jackson and a few of his dancers lean forward 45 degrees, backs straight, feet flat upon the floor, and hold the pose until they return upright with little apparent effort.

“It’s not really possible physically to do it,” said neurosurgeon Dr. Nishant Yagnick, a longtime Jackson fan who practices at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India. “He was cheating gravity.”

Journal of NeurosurgeryWhen the human body bends forward with the back straight, the doctors explain, the erector spinae muscles that run parallel to our vertebrae “act like cables” and support the body as the center of gravity shifts. But when the focus of bending is switched to the ankles, those erector muscles aren’t the major support. Instead, the strain is put on the calf and Achilles tendon, which aren’t really built for that role.
“This allows for a very limited degree of forward bending from the ankle joints, while keeping a stiff straight posture – unless you are Michael Jackson,” they explain in the study. “Most trained dancers with strong core strength will reach a maximum of 25 or 30 degrees of forward bending while performing this action. ”
Though Jackson was in marvelous shape, even he couldn’t do the maneuver without help. So he and his team invented a special shoe that would anchor him to the floor during the tilt.

United States Patent Jackson et al.Patented on October 26, 1993, the shoes “have a specially designed heel slot which can be detachably engaged” with a “hitch” (such as a nail) projected through the stage surface “by simply sliding the shoe wearer’s foot forward, thereby engaging with the hitch member,” according to the US Patent Office description.
“Very inventive idea of him,” Tripathi said with a laugh, “because even with that shoe, I am not able to do 45 degrees. You need a very good core of strength, and that strength was in Michael Jackson and his Achilles tendon.”
Yagnick agreed: “Normal people, even with the shoe, probably can’t do it. It takes a lot of practice to develop the core muscles, abs and central trunk muscles to get the strength to do it.”
Not only would most people need intensive training to accomplish the move, said Atlanta physiatrist Dr. Jose Garcia-Corrada, but they could seriously injure themselves if they fell. Garcia specializes in the medical rehabilitation of the spine at Emory School of Medicine.
“If you were to lose your core balance during the lean and didn’t catch the fall with your arms, you could hit your jaw,” Garcia-Corrada said. “That might hyperextend the neck and cause serious spine damage.”
It’s not just the spine that might be affected, he added.
“You’re holding most of your weight with muscles that you normally wouldn’t use in this way,” he said. “You could really strain your back and legs muscles and tendons.”
Many audiences who watched Jackson and his dancers perform the feat on video and in concerts had no knowledge of the trick. To them, Yagnick said, it seemed like magic.
“When Michael Jackson brought out the video and then did it live on stages around the world, people didn’t know he had this shoe system,” he said. “Particularly in India, where Michael Jackson is very popular, many people tried to copy him, and some even hurt themselves.”

Tripathi believes that Jackson’s legacy has “pushed whole generations of dancers to go beyond their limits,” which he says is putting new kinds of stresses on the spine. “So in India, neurosurgeons are perplexed due to all these new kinds of neuroskeletal injuries we are now seeing.”
Studies on the newer forms of dance inspired by Jackson back up the doctors’ observations.
A 2012 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports followed three types of hip-hop dancers: popper/lockers, breakers and “new schoolers.”
Popping and locking are foreshadowed in many of Michael Jackson’s routines. Locking requires freezing from a fast movement and “locking” into that position for a short time before suddenly moving again. Popping involves quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to produce a jerking motion or “pop” in the body.
Breakers or “B-boys” practice a highly acrobatic type of dance that involves tumbling, spinning headstands and lifts in which the entire body is supported by one arm. “New schoolers” borrow inspiration from many styles of dance and fit them to the music.

There were 738 injuries among the 232 dancers in the study; breakers had the highest number of injuries. The study’s conclusion: Hip-hop dancers “should be educated concerning injury prevention, biomechanics, and use of protective equipment.”
A 2009 study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found 1,665 injuries among 40 breakdance professionals and 104 amateurs, mostly in the wrist, spine, shoulder and ankle. Breakdancing, said the authors, “must be considered as a potentially high-risk dancing sport,” especially since dancers didn’t often take enough time to heal before jumping back into training.
That is a significant problem in India as well, Yagnick said, particularly among young people who see dancing as a pathway to a profession.
“We are seeing a lot of complex dance moves that they just copy but don’t really learn from a professional,” Yagnick said. “They are young, 18 or younger, and they want to get ahead, and they are pushing themselves. They don’t know what they are dealing with. There should be education on the right and wrong way to do things.”

The “mind-boggling” dance move required Jackson to lean forward at a 45° angle while keeping his spine straight, and his feet flat on the ground. Due to strain on the Achilles tendon, most trained dancers with strong core strength will only reach a maximum of 25° to 30° of forward bending while attempting this tilt.
Nishant Yagnick (Department of Neurosurgery, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India) and colleagues write, “Several MJ fans, including the authors, have tried to copy this move and failed, often injuring themselves in their endeavours.”
When the human body stands erect, its centre of gravity lies in front of the second sacral vertebra. When bending forward with a straight torso, keeping the hip joint as the fulcrum, the erector spinae muscles support the suspended spinal column during the forward shift of the centre of gravity by acting like cables, according to biomechanics and kinesiology studies. This prevents the body from falling forward.
However, when the fulcrum for forward bending is shifted to the ankle joints, as in Jackson’s famous antigravity tilt, the erector spinae lose their ability to maintain the centre of gravity, and strain is shifted to the Achilles tendon. This allows for a very limited degree of forward bending from the ankle joints, while keeping a stiff straight posture—unless you are Jackson.
Yagnick and colleagues revealed that Jackson (along with inventors Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins) designed a special shoe for live performances. This had a triangular slot in the heel that hooked onto a hitch member (a metallic peg) that came up from the stage floor at the right moment, thus allowing Jackson to lean forward beyond physiological limits without collapsing.
A 1992 patent registered under the performer’s name reads, “In the past, a professional entertainer, one of the inventors herein, has incorporated dance steps in his recorded video performances, wherein he and other dancers would lean forward beyond their centre of gravity, thereby creating an impressive visual effect. This effect was accomplished by the use of cables connecting a harness around the dancer’s waist with hooks on a stage, thereby allowing the dancer to lean forward at the required degree. However, since this requires stagehands to connect and then disconnect the cables, it has not been possible to use this system in live performances. Moreover, the cables obviously restricted arm and body movements.”
“The present invention overcomes the above noted deficiencies of the previously employed cable system by providing specialised footwear and a moveable hitch or post to which the specialised footwear can be detachably engaged to allow the footwear wearer to lean forward on the stage, with his or her centre of gravity well beyond the front of the shoes, thereby creating the desired visual effect.”
Yagnick et al write, “But even with specially designed footwear and the support of the hitch member, the move is incredibly hard to pull off, requiring athletic core strength from strengthened spinal muscles and lower-limb antigravity muscles. ”
“Trick or not, new forms of dancing inspired by Michael Jackson have begun to challenge our understanding of the modes and mechanisms of spinal injury. At the first meeting, there were only five of them. Now there are many more participants, but on August 17, only they, students of different universities, gathered at the monument to Lenin. The guys, while still on discussions on the network, decided to arrange a small performance, like those that took place around the world, immediately after the death of the singer. Stockholm, Amsterdam, New York, Toronto, Odessa, now it's time for Tyumen. Michael's hits were to be danced. We chose several of his songs: "Smooth criminal", "Thriller", "Beat it", at first glance it seems that it is not enough. In fact, the participants faced a colossal task: to learn three difficult dances in less than two weeks; if possible, promote your event so that as many people as possible come to it, and take care of the place where the show will take place. And although many of them knew the lyrics of Jackson's songs, only one of these five could dance in his manner - Anna, a student of TSOGU.
It is surprising that the girl did not dance professionally, did not attend specialized schools for teaching plasticity, she learned everything herself. Anya was 13 or 14 years old when she became interested in the work of Jackson. Mom, seeing how inspired her daughter was by the musician, even gave her a DVD player. No Internet lessons - Anya taught all the movements herself. Now she knows almost all of his dances.
The dances that the guys wanted to show to the public had to be learned somewhere. And since they had no premises, they had to look for other options. For example, exercise outside. We chose the area near the Art Palace. The very name of this failed building suggests that people of creativity should gather in and around it. Michael's fans chose a ghost fountain for training, they liked the shadow that it casts along with the transition from the building. In August, no one has yet canceled summer, and then the sun continued to heat at full strength, so a saving island always came in handy. Now the wall of the king of pop has appeared there, but how long it will survive is unknown - the Art Palace building may soon be demolished.
The boys needed loud music for training. One day, fans noticed how the break dancers who danced at the Mask restaurant came with a tape recorder. The guys were interested in where they connect their equipment? And they found out that there is a socket in the wall of the building. Since then, fans have been coming here with speakers to practice.
Gathered every evening to achieve a good result. On September 1, a concert was held in the Alexander Garden - an evening in memory of the King of Pop Michael Jackson. Posters and empty paper sheets were hung on the trees so that you could write your wishes to the idol. The guys dressed in the style of the singer: a black hat, short trousers, a white glove. They danced "Smooth criminal" and "Beat it", as well as "Thriller", which, however, they had to repeat several times at the request of the audience.
Michael's birthday celebrations are expected to be bigger this summer. The guys will try to ensure that all Tyumen residents see their dances. Therefore, on August 29, flash mobs will be held throughout the city: in Premiere, Favorite, Columbus. Participants of the action will dance, moving from one place to another. They will perform "Thriller", "The Drill", "Beat it". At the evening concert in Solnechny, Michael's songs ("You Are Not Alone", "We are the world") will be performed, and the guys will show new learned dances - "Wanna Be Starting Something", "Dancing Machine", "I Want You Back " and others. One of the participants will debut at the concert, who will dance to one of Michael's popular songs - "Billie Jean".
And although now there are much more members of the VKontakte group than there were in the first year, only six people, the best, will dance at the concert. By the way, if we talk about all the Tyumen fans of Michael, then their number has already exceeded one hundred, another group on the network can testify to this. They also prepared their flash mob, only it will take place on August 27th. It is also interesting that on September 1, as it should be for an educational institution, the doors to a dance school in the style of Michael will open, where everyone will be able to master the best dances of the performer. At the same time, the organizers of the first flash mob dedicated to Jackson will become teachers.
In the meantime, training continues. If you hear Michael's songs near the drama theater, then the guys are dancing. Some passers-by take pictures of the rehearsals on their phones. Once, a wedding photographer convinced fans to perform the famous “Thriller” in front of the newlyweds. And he captured the bride and groom against their background.
And yet, why do they do this, why do they get together and train almost all summer? Everyone has their own reasons: someone wants to have a good time, someone wants to make new friends, but everyone wants to learn how to dance like Jackson.

Jackson's star power from all the PR failures, however, did not suffer much, and when he went on a farewell tour in 2009, due to frenzied demand, the number of gigs on the London O2 was increased five times: from ten to an unimaginable 50. From this megalomaniac project, only one documentary about the rehearsals of This Is It came out, but its effect is even stronger because nothing came true.
