FAQ - fursuit.
ruThe most frequently asked questions...
1) How much fur does it take to make a full fursuit?
This question cannot be answered right off the bat, each planned fursuit must be considered specifically. How much fur you need is up to you - mainly on your height and build, as well as what kind of suit you intend to make (regular or with an exoskeleton), what types of fur you want to use (by type, color and length pile), etc. You can generally make the entire fursuit from one type of fur, and then just cut and dye it where necessary (in this case, for an ordinary full fursuit for an adult person of average height and normal build, you will need no more than 5 linear meters of fur, with a standard roll width of 150cm) .
2) If I really like someone else's fursuit, who can make an exact copy for me?
Do not believe me, no one. Firstly, each master has his own, unique style, and someone else will not be able to copy it. Secondly, not a single master, even the same , will copy someone else's fursuit, because. each character is protected by copyright (has a kind of "passport", i.e. a description and a detailed drawing), and no one needs a showdown over a stolen character.
3) Character uniqueness - what does it mean?
Character uniqueness is a very tricky question. With regard to people, everything is clear - each person has a passport with a photo and a name. But with regard to furry characters, everything is different, because they exist only in our dreams, in drawings and pages of books. Therefore, in reality, everything comes down to a character drawing and its textual description, i.e. to copyright. In fact, what makes a character unique is some feature that no one else has (for example, a unique color, jewelry, or your character in general is a creature of a completely new kind), or a combination of these features (for example, there is someone's character - a wolf, let it be red and white, eyes of different colors, on the neck - a crystal on a leather cord, on the shoulders - along the rune, and the left ear of the wolf is torn). It is fair to say that every year there are many fursuits and a myriad of drawings of various characters, so it is more and more difficult to remain unique. So relax - one way or another, you will still look like someone.
4) What is the best way to make a fursuit head?
As such, there is no best way - all methods are equivalent, but each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. You should choose the method that is most understandable to you and will allow you to achieve what you want from your fursuit. If you are doing a fursuit exactly on a person’s head, and every centimeter of volume is critical, a head based on a fabric mask (such a mask is called a “balaclava”) is quite suitable for you. If you want the head of the fursuit to bare its teeth, move its ears, blink - to mount the drives, the head must be made on a rigid frame made of metal or plastic. And the foam rubber head is a classic of fursuiting, almost everyone starts with this. In addition, all people are different - one is easier to sculpt, the other is to cut.
5) If I want to make a fursuit, do I need to learn how to make patterns, sew on a sewing machine, draw?
Tough question. Everyone decides for himself what he needs to be able to do. Undoubtedly, the ability to build patterns and work on a sewing machine will always come in handy, but it is quite possible to do without it, because. you can always contact the studio - and order patterns, and sew, and fit the figure. With the ability to draw, the situation is the same - there is no shortage of artists, you can easily order a sketch or consult. Free access to a great many useful drawings and photographs.
6) Why is it undesirable for a fursuiter to go out alone?
Because walking with an escort is much safer and more convenient. The assistant will always give you a bottle of water, take a backpack with your things, answer the questions of curious passers-by, prevent you from pulling the "beast" by the tail and ears, warn you about a child in the "blind zone" of the review, etc. And where, without accompaniment, will photos be taken as a keepsake? :)
Of course, there are still ascetics who changed clothes on a cardboard in a snowdrift, left their things in the bushes, and walked in a fursuit in splendid isolation, but this, as they say, at your own peril and risk...
7) How are fursuits washed, cleaned and dried?
Questions of cleaning, washing and drying, transportation and storage of the fursuit are described in detail in the "Care" section of the menu of our website.
8) Why do we need a fursuit room?
Fursuit room is a specially organized room where all the necessary conditions are created for the convenience of fursuiters. In other words, this is the locker room. For obvious reasons, any photo and video shooting in the fursuit room is prohibited. Only fursuiters and their assistants (if any) are allowed to enter this room, for all others it is forbidden to enter there for ethical and purely practical reasons. In the fursuit room, cool drinks are always ready, fans for drying heads, racks for drying overalls and paws, tables and chairs, a repair corner (for urgent fursuit repairs), etc.
9) What are the advantages of hand painting a fursuit and how is it done?
Manual coloring of fur (with acrylic paint, brush and/or airbrush) saves time, effort, fur and money, and most importantly - allows you to get the most complex coloring (including realistic, with smooth color transitions, or with elegant patterns ), which you can never achieve by connecting multi-colored parts. But manual dyeing of fur, in addition to obvious advantages, also has disadvantages. As a rule, dyed fur becomes a little stiffer, the paint itself fades and changes color over time, and after washing (yes, yes, sooner or later the suit will have to be washed), the paint will partially wash off and fade, so you have to take the airbrush again and renew the color. Therefore, fully colored fursuits are rare, usually drawing stripes, spots, patterns, and simply tinting the borders between fur of different colors.
Fursuit style matters too. For a realistic fursuit, an airbrush is indispensable, because. the color of any animal is a transition of colors, and this cannot be achieved by any stitching of details. Cartoon characters, on the contrary, do not have such transitions, all color borders are sharp, therefore, for cartoons, the airbrush is used exclusively at the request of the master / customer.
10) What is a fursuit travel kit?
This is a small box of sewing accessories, which is very helpful if you need to urgently fix your fursuit during a trip. As a rule, there are threads, needles, pins and a blade. In the travel kit, at the discretion of the owner of the fursuit, there may be scissors, glue, spare claws, and even a piece of fur.
11) Is it hot in the fursuit?
When you put on a fur overall, it gets hot. When you put on the head of the fursuit, it becomes both hot and stuffy. After walking, playing and dancing in a fursuit, it will become even more humid. How to deal with heat, stuffiness, humidity and other troubles is described in detail in the "Microclimate" item of the menu of our site.
12) How much money does a fursuit cost?
If you do everything yourself - relatively little (actually, only for materials and tools). And if you order a fursuit - a lot, because. painstaking manual work is not cheap.
13) Why is ordering a fursuit so expensive?
Because between the time you place your order and your fursuit is ready, there is a sea of unique work that can't be done anywhere else. A master is an artist, a sculptor, a tailor and an inventor rolled into one. The production of your fursuit actually starts from scratch - the master only has a sketch and your comments. It is necessary to take measurements and build patterns, find high-quality materials, sculpt from plasticine and cast from plastic, cut and dye fur, glue, draw eyes, and sew, sew, sew ... these are busy evenings until late at night, pricked fingers, experiments with materials, hassle and headache, a wild mess at home, a bouquet of occupational diseases, and not only - so that you get your fursuit as you wished, beautiful, comfortable and of high quality. If these words do not convince you - do it yourself, because no one bothers.
14) What is an "exoskeleton"?
An exoskeleton, in relation to fursuits, is something between your body and the overalls of the suit, in order to achieve an animal-like body shape or just to get additional volume (imitation of muscles, big shoulders, etc.). Structurally, the exoskeleton is foam pads attached to clothes (to a T-shirt and tights, for example) or directly to the overalls, from the inside.
15) Is it worse to see, hear, or speak in a fursuit?
Tricky question. Actually, yes, worse. But if each item is analyzed separately, then the audibility deteriorates so slightly that no one notices it. Nothing prevents you from speaking in a fursuit, but your voice will be slightly distorted and muffled. Limited visibility is the biggest problem. Each fursuit has its own "blind zone", and the size of this zone depends on how the head of the fursuit is made. As a rule, the side view is limited very slightly, but the worsening of the front view by the bridge of the nose interferes the most (sometimes you can put an orange on the fursuiter’s face, and he will not notice it), with all the ensuing consequences.
16) How do people on the street react to your appearance in a fursuit?
The vast majority of passers-by react positively - they smile, come closer, call their children, stroke, hug, take pictures for memory, etc. The rest will be indifferent, unless some curious passer-by asks who you are and what is happening (if some strict grandmother on the bench at the entrance is interested, you must immediately answer that you are a drug addict and run away). A negative reaction, if the time and place of the fursuit walk is chosen correctly, is almost never encountered, but if something like this happens, your escort will take care of it.
17) How to behave with other people when you are in a fursuit?
Interact! Turn on your acting skills and embody your character, play along with the adults and children around you, but be especially careful and careful with children. The fursuiter should contact children only if the children themselves want it. Seeing the child, do not run to him, but first look at his reaction to your appearance. If children are drawn to you, please them and have fun yourself. If the child is afraid of you, do not approach him and, moreover, do not try to calm him down.
18) What do you wear under a fursuit?
This depends on the external conditions (outdoor/indoor temperature) and the fursuit (how warm it is), as well as the preferences of the fursuit itself. One prefers thermal underwear, the second prefers shorts and a T-shirt, and some generally wear a fursuit on a naked body.
19) Is it possible or not to remove the head of a fursuit in public?
In general, it is impossible to do this, but there is no sacred meaning in this requirement, the reason is extremely simple - this is the attention of others. That is why the actors do not remove their masks and do not remove their make-up during the performance. If the attention of the public is drawn to you, for example, when you participate in a street procession, play with children or perform on stage, you cannot remove your head, otherwise the image of the character is destroyed! In no case should you remove your head in front of the kids, so as not to inflict moral trauma on them - after all, they still firmly believe in Santa Claus, and you are a real beast for them or a cute toy for puppet tea drinking. If you need to remove your head right during a walk in order to take a sip of water or replace a dead battery - just move away from the general mass of people - around the corner, behind a kiosk, behind a tree, etc., and calmly remove your head there. And if you are an orthodox fursuiter who, in principle, takes off and puts on his head only in the "fursuit room", and nowhere else - well, this is your right and your (!) problem.
20) Can the fursuit be guaranteed?
Yes, to some extent. Only quality assurance is applicable to the fursuit, i. e. the master who completed your order declares to you that the fursuit is made without defects and of high quality materials and, with proper handling, will serve you faithfully for a long time. It also makes sense to stipulate the period for filing claims in advance, for example, within one week from the moment you receive the fursuit. Other types of guarantees, such as a guarantee for a certain period of service, are completely inapplicable to fursuits, because. fursuiters are all different - one may not get out of the suit at all, and the other puts on his suit once a week for 5 minutes.
Another point that should be clarified when ordering a fursuit is the issue of making changes and repairs. Some craftsmen absolutely do not tolerate outside interference in their fursuits, and always only personally repair and remake them, so they immediately warn that they will cancel the warranty and refuse to repair if you yourself or someone else tries to hem / flog / glue / touch up your fursuit.
21) Can I see the internal structure of someone else's fursuit, try it on?
Only with the permission of the owner, and nothing else. Fursuit is a very personal thing.
22) What is the difference between a life-size puppet and a fursuit?
There are several significant differences. Firstly, it is always an animal costume (real or fictional), so a milk bag or Carlson costume will never be a fursuit. Secondly, a life-size puppet is made to work for the public, and anyone can wear it, while a fursuit is a personal thing, and is made for one particular person. The last, most important difference lies in the fact that the life-size puppet embodies an independent, independent character, without "binding" to a person, and the fursuit embodies just a personal character that someone dreams of being. Life-size puppets and fursuits are independent separate directions.
23) How long does it take to make a fursuit?
There is no definite answer to this question. It all depends on how complex the fursuit you have planned, what technology you decided to use to make it, and how much free time you have for all this. A simple cartoon fursuit, without frills, is absolutely realistic to make in one or two weeks if you use a sewing machine and do fursuit all "working day".
24) Fursuit should sit like a glove, be without a single fold, or let them be?
You can talk for a long time about the fact that there are no folds on the body of animals (although they are there), and also that the fursuit, whatever one may say, is a textile product, so there will still be folds. Both opinions are equally true. This is a matter of personal taste. The main thing is to avoid extremes - extra folds are useless, but you also don’t need to sew up the suit until it cracks at the seams (by the way, tight overalls without a single fold can create blood circulation problems for you). The suit should sit loose enough to be able to walk, bend down, sit down without problems, and at the same time the suit should not hang in a bag. If you want to minimize the number of folds, then you should use stretchy fur on a knitted basis, or add elasticity by weaving rubber threads into the fur.
25) Which plastic is better for teeth and claws - molded or baked?
Both plastics are designed for different situations. Baked plastic is inexpensive and strong enough, an excellent solution for piece products. Molded plastic is needed for mass production, when it is necessary to obtain many exact copies of some part. Molded plastic is noticeably stronger than baked plastic, but more fragile, costs much more, is sold by the liter, requires additional materials (silicone to create molds), and also emits toxic fumes during the solidification process.
For example, if you only need a dozen claws for gloves, then there is no point in buying casting materials for a handful of claws, take baked plastic (or just order cast claws). And if you want to produce these claws in tens and hundreds (for example, for sale), then casting will be the most profitable solution.
26) Why is a mannequin-copy of a human body made?
Some very unusual problems occur when making a fursuit. For example, you are making a fursuit for yourself, for successful work you need qualified outside help, but there is no one to help, and you yourself physically cannot be both inside and outside the fursuit at the same time. Or you need to make a fursuit to order, and the customer cannot come to you and / or does not know how to take measurements correctly. Such problems are solved by a special mannequin, which exactly repeats the body of a person who will wear this fursuit.
To create such a mannequin is quite simple - as a rule, a person puts on a disposable painter's overalls, with outside help wraps himself with adhesive tape up to his throat, marks are applied directly on the adhesive tape with a marker, according to this marking, the adhesive shell is cut, removed, and then glued back. Then the empty shell of the mannequin is stuffed with newspapers, rags, foam rubber, etc. , to give it the shape of a body again. The dummy provides the master with the constant "presence" of the customer, and the customer himself does not need to take measurements and go to the workshop (and the customer may well be from another country). By the way, in the West, when ordering a fursuit, the customer sends his duct tape to the master instead of his measurements.
27) Is it true that lithium batteries are very dangerous and cannot be used for fursuit ?
By themselves, both lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries are safe. But they can really catch fire and even explode - when short-circuited, overcharged, overheated, and when penetrating.
To prevent a short circuit, use a soldering iron and electrical tape (heat shrink), and do not leave any dangling bare twists! Reloading is also excluded, because. All modern chargers and batteries have built-in overcharge protection. For a battery to explode from overheating, it must be in an open fire. And a penetrating blow - for this, the battery must be deliberately hit with a knife ... In short, for a lithium battery to flare up and explode, it still needs to be tried.
28) How to choose/organize the right place for a fursuit walk?
First of all, this place must be suitable. Know that you don’t have to walk in a fursuit in supermarkets or shops - they may not understand, a conflict is possible. For fun, climbing into a bus in a fursuit or going to a museum are also bad ideas. The ideal option is quiet city parks and pedestrian streets where adults and children relax. Depending on the style and appearance of your fursuit, you can attend city and children's holidays, as well as various thematic festivals (on the theme of the Middle Ages, fantasy, animation, etc.). After choosing a place, specifying the time and date, find an escort in advance (see point 6) and prepare a fursuit (see "Travel bag" ). As you may have guessed, with a partial fursuit (only the head, paws and tail) it is most convenient to walk, and there is nothing to drag in terms of volume.
At the place of the walk, you need to organize comfortable conditions for yourself. If you are going to a holiday/festival, try to contact the organizers of the event in advance and ask for assistance - usually they meet a cute character and allocate a tent/room where you can safely change clothes and leave things. Also keep in mind that events with registration, security guards and paid entrance are always better, if only because all the amenities are there, and the probability of meeting inadequate people is close to zero. But at free events with free entry, you can meet anyone, so in such places it is better not to appear in a fursuit at all, or with a serious accompaniment.
If you plan to take a walk in the park or on the street, it is better to ask someone from your acquaintances to help with a private car so that you can be taken to the place of the walk and back right in a suit (well, or just change clothes and leave things in the car).
29) Is it true that fursuiters don't use deodorant?
Use, but not all. Deodorant, by and large, is simply not needed. An antiperspirant is enough to minimize sweating, as well as textile disinfectants to treat the fursuit after a walk (the overalls must be turned inside out for treatment). Deodorant for fursuit is used exclusively at will, because. there is no tangible benefit from it, and the aforementioned chemicals will definitely not replace the deodorant ... Using deodorant is not recommended at all - others (especially children) may have allergies, and also keep in mind that if you are crazy about the smell of your deodorant, do not sure everyone else will be delighted too.
30) Children are the most dangerous for a fursuiter - is this a joke?
No, not a joke. Yes, after fun games and hugs with children, ice cream or chocolate stains, sticky lollipops, etc. may appear on the fursuit. The kids also love to check the fursuit for strength, there is such a thing. But the main danger lies elsewhere. For example, due to the limited view of the fursuit, you can simply not notice the baby standing too close or behind you, accidentally knock him down, hit him with his knee, etc. If you, at the request of the parents, took the baby in your arms, keep in mind that dropping the child is much easier than it seems (that's why the fursuiters usually squat, but do not pick up the children). The consequences of such inattention will be sad - both for the child and for you. I think it's understandable that small children are another reason to have an escort on a fursuit outing. Of course, the fursuiter himself, too, let the raven not count.
31) Is a realistic fursuit much harder to make than a cartoon fursuit?
Such an opinion really exists, and is erroneous. In fact, making a good cartoon fursuit is no easier than making a good realistic fursuit. In both cases, very serious knowledge and skills are needed.
32) Foreign fursuits are always better and better quality than Russian fursuits masters?
This is a delusion. The creations of Russian masters are no worse. The only advantage of foreign craftsmen is that they always have really high-quality materials (primarily excellent fur of American and European production) at hand, unlike Russian craftsmen, who have to order all this and get it at exorbitant prices. Otherwise, the quality of the fursuit does not depend on the master's country of residence. So it's better to order fursuits in the country where you live - in case of problems, it will be much easier to solve them.
33) If I want to learn how to make fursuits, can I apprentice with some master?
Only if the master himself needs it. For example, masters who have many orders, and therefore a lot of work, may well agree to teach you in exchange for your help in the workshop.
34) Is it true that people with poor health should not wear fursuits?
More precisely, undesirable. Wearing a fursuit is not recommended, for example, for asthmatics, because the fursuit collects dust well, as well as for people with heart disease and circulatory disorders who do not tolerate heat and stuffiness, etc.
35) If my fursuit needs repairs that I can't do myself, who can I contact?
Best of all - to the master who made you the fursuit. It is the master who knows more about his creation than anyone else, so he can fix it while maintaining the author's style.
But it also happens that the same master will not be able to contact . Then there will be no other choice but to entrust the repair to another master. But you must understand that problems can arise. For example, if you need to update the hand-painted fursuit, it can be difficult to find the right paint and match the same shade. If you need to replace the fur on the head of the fursuit, you can damage the base by peeling off the old fur, because. it is not known how and where it is glued. The most difficult part is the work inside the head of the fursuit, for example, to replace the eyes, when accurate, precise work is required in a very limited space, almost by touch. For these and similar reasons, many craftsmen refuse to repair other people's fursuits, because. they are well aware that sometimes repairs are more difficult than doing anew.
36) Can I order a fursuit if I am not yet 18 years old?
Yes, of course, but only if one of your parents guarantees full payment. There were ridiculous cases, for example, when a child received a certain amount as a gift, sufficient for an advance payment, and ordered a fursuit. The student planned to pay for the rest by asking his parents for money, only the parents, suddenly learning about the order for the costume, refused to pay.
37) What happens if I order a fursuit, make an advance payment, and then change my mind or fail to pay and cancel my order ?
This is a rather complex issue, and its resolution depends on whether such a refusal was agreed in advance, and if so, on what conditions. Some masters immediately warn that in case of failure they do not return anything. Otherwise, several scenarios are possible.
If the master has not yet started work, most likely you will receive your money back.
If the prepayment has already been spent on materials, you can also ask for the purchased materials to be returned to you, paying the costs of shipping them.
If the master has already started work, for example, he drew a sketch and built patterns of overalls, then the prepayment (together with patterns and a sketch) will be returned to you, but minus the cost of the work done and shipping.
If you refuse to pay for a ready-made fursuit, then the prepayment is usually returned after the fursuit is put up for sale and bought by a new owner. But before putting the fursuit up for free sale, the master must change its appearance of the fursuit so as not to violate your copyright on the character.
38) If I want to sell my fursuit, what is the best way to do it?
First, you need to put the fursuit in order. If it's torn, fix it, if it's dirty, wash it. Take close-up, full-length photographs of the fursuit - front, side, back, as well as the inside of the head and inside-out overalls. Make a short text description - when the fursuit was made, from what materials, for what height the fursuit was sewn, for a male or female figure. Specify all the main sizes of the fursuit. Jumpsuit sizes - bust, waist, hips, sleeve and leg lengths, etc. The size of the fursuit head is two girths of your head (horizontal - at forehead level, just above the ears, and vertical - under the chin). As a rule, this information is sufficient. An advertisement for the sale of a fursuit should not be placed anywhere, but only where there are interested buyers. If you want to sell a fursuit in our country, an advertisement for the sale should be placed in fursuit groups on social networks. If you want to sell a fursuit to foreign furries, you need to place an ad on specialized sites, such as Furbuy or Etsy.
Of course, if you decide to sell a fursuit to foreign furries, all sizes must be converted from centimeters to inches, and the description must be in English. You will also have to deal with issues such as accepting payments, international shipping, withdrawing money, etc. If you do not want to figure it out on your own, you can always turn to intermediaries who will help you with the sale, but they will take a percentage of the amount for which your fursuit can be sold.
Yes, your fursuit is your property and you can dispose of it as you wish, it is your right. But there are two more points that you should know and consider.
The first moment - craftsmen really don't like it when fursuits are ordered from them and soon they resell it for more than they ordered. It is quite possible that the same master who made you a fursuit will never accept an order from you again and will ask you not to disturb him in the future. And it may even be that other masters will also show you the door.
The second point - before selling the fursuit, you must change its appearance in order to keep your character. Selling your fursuit in its original form, with the wording "without transferring copyright to the character" is absurd.
39) Is it possible to ride a motorcycle in a fursuit?
Yes, but doing so is undesirable and even dangerous. You can see worse in a fursuit, so the likelihood of an accident increases. In addition, you must understand that the fursuit does not protect you, unlike motorcycle equipment and a helmet. Nobody canceled the possibility of getting a fine either.
The main elements of furry culture - Megatutorial
Furry-art (eng. Furry-art) - usually called simply "art", comes from the English word "art", meaning art in general, but used mainly in the field of fine arts . These are all drawings within the furry theme. As a rule, these are pictures depicting zooanthropomorphs and created by furry artists, however, this is an indicator, not a criterion. With the development of computer technology, the production of furry art has been almost completely carried out using computers and tablets, as the most convenient and functional tool in comparison with more traditional ones like paper and pencils. For this reason, furry art exists mostly only in electronic form on the Internet, although there are artists who prefer traditional media. Many furry sites are dedicated to this particular aspect of furry culture, or at least contain it in large numbers [40]. According to the results of a survey of furry artists conducted by IARP, on average, about 25% of all furry art is for adults, and many people who stumble upon erotic furry art galleries on the Internet have the opinion that this proportion is much higher [23].
Fursona (eng. Fursona, “fur” + “persona”) is a personal character of a furry. This is, as a rule, an anthropomorphic character with which the furry associates itself or with which others associate it. Fursona, as a character, can have his own unique name, appearance, character, history, etc. The level of sophistication of the fursona varies greatly from one furry to another. In its simplest form, this is simply an indication of the type of animal. Often belonging to the furry subculture is determined precisely by the presence of fursona, and according to the IARP study, about 95% of furries have a fursona. [23] It can be noted that the fursona reminds many of the idea of a totem animal, however, in its modern form, it is probably a thing much more complex and personified.
Possible purposes of fursona creation:
1) Avatar. Graphical representation of an Internet user. The visual image in which he appears to other users and by which he can be identified.
2) Metaphor. A fursona character often reflects elements of its owner's life. The way a person is dressed or wants to dress, or the character traits that he possesses.
3) Role play. A character can be created for a role-playing game. Verbal on forums or social networks, desktop, live or any other. A role-playing character can be a metaphor or an alter ego of the author. In the case of fursona, he often accompanies the creator even outside the game.
4) The incarnation of the soul. Fursona is how the author imagines himself inside, and perhaps how he would like to become outside. Some furries may decry such an attitude towards fursona, saying that it is just a game, and some, on the contrary, may demand this conformity from other furries. A much larger number of furries noted that the fursona depicts their ideal image than their real image [23].
5) Furson by association. Fursona is the character with which a person is associated with other people, even if he was not created specifically for these purposes. So, for example, it often happens in role-playing games, where a character becomes iconic for its player, and the player begins to associate with him.
Joe Strike points out that the idea of creating a fursona probably comes from RPGs (especially board games like Dungeons & Dragons) where people create characters for themselves and assume their role in the game. However, this only fully developed with the development of furry art, when furry artists began to create animal alter egos for themselves to depict themselves and introduce themselves to each other. [25]
In addition to fursona, there is also the concept of OS (English OS - Original Character) - the original character. Like fursona, this is a kind of anthropomorphic character that has its own name, appearance, history and creator. The difference between OS and fursona is in the identification component. Fursona is exactly the character that has an association and identification with its creator, while the OS is just a character, like any character in a work of art.
It is not uncommon for a furry to have more than one furson, each of which reflects only a separate aspect of his personality. There are owners of three, four and even more fursonas, who have identification with all of them at the same time. Fursons can develop over time, change partially, or even completely, depending on the desire and feeling of the creator. According to an IARP study, about 50% of furries had more than one fursona during their lives, that is, they felt the need to change or add another fursona at least once. Although among those with more than one fursona, only about 25% were noted at the same time. Sometimes the fursona does not always have the same sex and gender as the owner, and may also have a different sexual orientation. A total of 62% of furries noted that their fursona must be of the same gender as them, while 38% allowed the fursona of the opposite sex. Fursons are less likely to be heterosexual than furries. Probably, the expression "I'm not gay, unlike my fursona" allows furries to express their personality, distancing themselves from the stigma that they may be subjected to [23].
Fursons and OS can be considered in many ways the economic engines of the subculture, due to the desire of many furries to pay artists for images of their characters, whether it's just a picture, an avatar or a fursuit.
As for the species of fursona, IARP analyzed more than 6000 different fursona, from which they were able to identify 852 different species. According to the results of the study, the three most popular species in descending order were wolf, fox and dog , and in total the canine family accounts for about 40% of all fursons. About 15% of the furson were felids and 8% were dragons. There were species that did not exist in reality, but were popular in the realm of fantasy, such as dragons, as well as species that exist in individual works, games, TV shows, and even species completely invented by the furries themselves [23].
Figure 7. Dynamo Moscow mascot costume [38] |
Fursuit - fursuit, fluffy suit. This is the costume of an anthropomorphic character, usually someone's fursona. There are full fursuits and partial ones (also called "partials" from the English Partial). Full - cover the entire body, partial - consist of individual elements. It can be a head (mask), tail, ears, gloves, shoes and much more. Separately, there is a category of fursuits designed to move on all four limbs (quadsuits). People who wear or at least own a fursuit are called fursuiters. Fursuits, as a rule, start at a price of $600, and then their price, depending on the configuration, materials, and other things, can grow to any amount, however, as an exception, there are works that are much cheaper.
