If you’re hankering to move with cowboy attitude, experts say line dancing could be the ideal workout. Even if you’ve never moseyed into a country bar or felt particularly at home on the range.

“Line dancing is exercise for people who like country music,” said fitness instructor Amy Blackburn, “people who might not join a gym because traditional exercise, like treadmills and weight lifting, is either intimidating, or it bores them to death.”

Blackburn, who is based in Nashville, Tennessee, said line dancing is the thing to do on a Saturday night. Her DVD, “Country Line Dance Party,” is an aerobics workout carved from its signature shuffles, kicks and stomps.

“The music’s upbeat. The workout burns calories and strengthens the core, legs, and hamstrings,” she said. “And you can take it down a level to keep it low impact.”

Though deeply rooted in Irish and German folk traditions, line dancing was off most urban grids until 1992 when Billy Ray Cyrus, father of teen idol Miley, stomped upon the stage with his megahit “Achy Breaky Heart.”

Today line dancing is a worldwide phenomenon. Devotees have formed organizations as far away as Singapore and Australia.

Adam Herbel, a.k.a. the Dancing Cowboy, teaches country line dancing at The Rodeo Club in San Jose, California. He said some come for the exercise, some for the music and atmosphere.

“We have a funny thing called redneck aerobics,” said Herbel, described as a series of five or six upbeat line dances strung in a row.

“When the DJ calls out ‘its redneck aerobics,’ everybody knows what’s coming,” he said. “Sometimes the fitness gals will do pretty advanced line dancing.”

Herbel said the dances change from area to area so one song may have 50 different dances to it. Nevertheless, it’s not hard to learn, the music is cheerful and the folks are friendly.

“You can master single line dance in a one hour class,” he said. “It appeals to ladies because you don’t have to have a partner to do it. So I tell the guys, if you want to have a chance at least get out and try.”

Known around the San Francisco Bay area of California as the Queen of Line Dancing, Doris Volz has been dancing since 1992 and teaching seniors since 2003.

“No one knows how many line dancers there are in the world,” said Volz. “There is no way to count.”

Dr. Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, an expert with the American College of Sports Medicine, described line dancing as a “sociable, musical and fun” way to fight inactivity among the elderly.

“With any physical activity, there’s the rule of the third: one-third of people will like it, one-third will hate it, one-third will be indifferent,” said Chodzko-Zajko, professor of Kinesiology at the University of Illinois. “What people find motivating is going to vary with their culture.”

Whether you’re stomping in cowboy boots or running shoes, it’s hard to pout while attempting a classic heel-toe swaying step like the Tush Push, or moving to a tune called “Beer for my Horses.”

“They can teach a line dance to go with just about any upbeat song,” Blackburn said. “People teach different moves, but the Tush Push is universal.”

8 Easy Line Dances for Seniors

We often get asked “What are some easy line dances for seniors?”

So I thought I would highlight 8 dances, starting with a complete beginners line dance, and gradually building up in complexity.

This will quickly help improve your knowledge of moves found in modern line dances. You will also get to learn a dance for free.

First, a bit about line dancing songs and choreography

Each line dance is choreographed to a specific song, incorporating a string of moves that become the dance routine. This fundamental routine is then danced facing all 4 walls (sometimes less) of a room.

In other words you dance the whole choreography facing the instructor in front of you, and then on completion of the routine you end up facing left wall and complete the routine before turning to the back wall (in this case) and continue doing it around the room ’til the song stops.

Easy Line Dances for Seniors – and everyone else.

The following are not just for seniors but they are evergreen and great for anyone starting out.

1 – Elvira

Elvira helps you get the basics of a vine (grape vine) and a hitch as well as a sense of rhythm and timing.

The story I like to tell is that when I started as a complete line dance beginner around 1992 when everyone wanted to learn “Achy Breaky Heart” line dance, I first learned a dance similar to Elvira.

My girlfriend at the time was a natural dancer but I certainly wasn’t, and after learning the second line dance I said to her it was easier than the first. She looked at me and said it was actually harder, but you are just starting to “click in”, so it seems easier.

Point is, if you find it hard in the beginning – stick with it as it gets easier and is great fun plus you get to meet a lot of great people – and maybe even lose a few pounds.

Brooks and Dunn are one of the most famous Nashville Duo’s / bands with a huge string of hits. I learned Neon Moon on guitar so it has a special place for me.

Cha Cha is a specific step that has a specific rhythm – slow, slow, quick, quick, quick where the 3 x quicks takes up the same space of time as the the 2 x slow counts. This will make more sense after learning this dance.

With the approach of Valentine's Day, a lot is said about love and relationships, but do we know what lies at the heart of falling in love? What happens in our body, how do the so-called "butterflies in the stomach" appear, how to maintain and maintain a feeling of love in the future? And how to overcome the stage of "broken heart"? BENU Aptieka invited expert, psychologist, doctor of psychology Diana Zande and BENU Aptieka pharmacist Zanda Ozoliņa share their advice.

What happens in the body when we fall in love?

Psychologist Diana Zande explains that the feeling of falling in love is determined by physiological processes. When we see a person who we are very attracted to and like very much, we usually say: “Something clicked in my head!” And this is not so far from the truth - we can say that the “click” really occurs in the head, as various substances (neurotransmitters and hormones) begin to be released in the brain and the person feels an unusual surge of energy. Our brain behaves as if we are passing a difficult exam session - we suddenly need to learn everything that we did not have time to master during the semester, we are able to mobilize. A very similar mobilization of the body can cause a feeling of falling in love - but not for passing exams, but for one selected person. Our gaze is focused only on him, the rest of the world is no longer important. Even when we are not together, all our thoughts are devoted to this person - we are completely occupied with him. This state is very well characterized by the expression "Love is blind." This is a very accurate observation of human nature - after all, when we are in love, the processes taking place in our brain prevent us from thinking clearly a little. That is why it is very difficult for us to notice that the object of our love, for example, is not so punctual and accurate, or has other shortcomings. During this period, it is difficult for us to see this person as he really is, and we interpret each of his qualities in his favor. This is how nature works so that we can fall in love, because if we looked at this person for real, no one would suit us at all. Therefore, we can say that the brain helps us to see the beauty in the object of love, and put the rest a little aside. This happens so that we can actively begin these relationships, because in the phase of falling in love we need to build close relationships - a raft on which we can then float on the river of life, even after falling in love has already ended.

Falling in love and health

During the period of falling in love, due to the biological processes taking place in the body, we feel very energetic, we can do without sleep and food, we become very emotional. We can say that our body is in an emergency state. However, he cannot be in such a state of total mobilization all his life, therefore falling in love is the initial phase of love, which then passes. It is possible that after the mobilization phase you will need to recover a bit - for example, you may accumulate lack of sleep or unfinished business. Many people in the falling in love phase become less sensitive to pain, many health problems are relegated to the background and the person no longer feels them as strongly as before. It may be a little more difficult for people with chronic diseases, for whom any external shock may not be very helpful. Especially if it is unhappy love that comes with all these experiences, to which disappointment is added. In this case, we can say that falling in love does not benefit a person, as it can cause anxiety and depression.

However, if we are talking about love in general, when a couple lives in full-fledged love, where there is both emotional and intimate intimacy, as well as mutual obligations that partners do not violate, and an active sex life (this applies not only to 20- summer, but also to 70-year-old couples), such love really benefits health. It provides emotional well-being - you have someone to share with, support you, someone you can care for, as well as physical closeness, which undoubtedly makes your body feel more vibrant, younger and healthier. Therefore, if love feelings are healthy on both sides, then they benefit both emotional well-being and physical health. And vice versa - if a couple's love ended or it was not at all, then this can cause a lot of pain and suffering, as well as worsen their health, says D. Zande.

How do “butterflies in the stomach” appear?

The feeling that is sometimes called “butterflies in the stomach” can actually be experienced not only when we fall in love, but also from a lot of stress. Often people say: “My stomach is twisted!”, And when we fall in love, we say: “Butterflies in my stomach.” Since falling in love is a kind of positive stress, “butterflies in the stomach” is one of the sensations of our body that we can experience, for example, before an exam. When we fall in love, we give this expression a positive connotation, and before exams - a negative connotation.

In addition, this positive feeling can be trained. Spring is the time when we feel it more often, rejoicing at the awakening of nature. Experiencing these feelings, we ourselves can try to associate them with our partner, gradually learn to experience this positive feeling, thinking about the partner. In the same way, over time, we often learn, thinking about a partner, to experience dissatisfaction or disappointment, the psychologist emphasizes.

Heartbreak”

Being in love is a positive stress and mobilization, but “heartbreak” and the pangs of love are real suffering. The body is in a state that is very reminiscent of mourning, says D. Zande. This is a mental pain, and its consequences can be as strong as in the case of the death of someone close. At the same time, there may be depression and depression, a desire to isolate and not see anyone, a feeling that life has ended ... Each of us has ever been in such a state. People with a more sensitive psyche, more vulnerable, can experience such a situation very deeply, withdraw into themselves and even feel its impact on health. However, even more stable and strong people would not like to experience these feelings.

At the stage of “heartbreak” it is absolutely not necessary to try to start a new relationship, although friends often strongly advise this, emphasizes D. Zande. It's like putting a band-aid on a broken leg and going dancing - it won't work! This pain must be endured! Often this state lasts a year, as in mourning, until all cycles have passed - the first holidays that you meet separately: Christmas, Ligo, “the day we met”, the anniversary of parting ... At this time, it is important, firstly, to allow yourself to experience this pain, and, secondly, to look for people with whom one could talk about it. Therefore, it is important that there are friends around who understand that this process does not need to be adjusted - you must also understand this. Without sadness, you cannot get over the loss, and often, when the loss of love is experienced, people can better appreciate what was in their relationship, and begin the next relationship, already smarter, wiser and more focused on healthier relationships. This is a painful experience that can be very rewarding.

Holidays will be especially difficult during this period. For example, on Valentine's Day, those who are lonely, have lost their love or have not found it, can be very sad. Therefore, others should treat this with great understanding. You can ask: “How do you feel?”, but you should not lecture or impose your opinion.

If you are too excited…

Pharmacist BENU Aptieka Zanda Ozoliņa says that if you have a big quarrel, the relationship is over, or the person is in a state of prolonged stress or depression, herbal teas can help calm them down with a sedative effect - from mint, valerian, lemon balm, hops. Also, during the period of experiences, biologically active plant-based supplements with B vitamins are recommended, which have a sedative effect and calm the nervous system. Remember - no matter how sad you may be, physical activity will help you organize your thoughts and strengthen your immune system, as well as improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

However, remember - no matter how strong the excitement is, you must not exceed the prescribed doses! If sleep disturbances continue for more than two weeks, you should consult a specialist.

How to take care of relationships in the long run?

It is impossible to force the falling in love phase to continue throughout life, since our body simply could not withstand such a mobilization, psychologist D. Zande explains. Sometimes people believe that the feeling of love will always exist on its own. However, in reality, in order for this feeling to be preserved, conscious actions are needed. One of them is to look at your partner as the person you fell in love with, whom you once met and whom you liked so much, as the person you decided to love, with whom you want to be together and live in love and harmony. You want to like it, because it is beneficial to you. Every day, think of it as something pleasant: some pleasant memory or time spent together, no matter what, that makes you feel positive about the other person. This is how you train the feeling of love. It's just like learning to enjoy pleasant little things or grumbling - we can learn this and develop a reflex towards our partner when we have positive emotions when we think about him. You need to love at will, love because you have decided and want it.

The psychologist advises not to take love relationships for granted - you need to take care of these relationships and make efforts for this. There is no need to consider who does more, who does the right thing - you just need to give something to another person, since this is primarily beneficial for relationships, secondly, it is very beneficial for the person himself, and thirdly, it is very beneficial for children if the couple has them so that they learn to build loving relationships in adulthood.
