Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

    80s...........................................Dancing............................Patrick Swayze..............................Baby's in the Corner....................Abortion..........................Lake Dancing

Who wouldn't think this was one of the best movies EVER. Even as a very masculine male I find this film very entertaining. It represents a time when films could be based completely on dancing and music without the modern day clichés. This film represents a time when love could blossom in the summer, and also the unending (yet creative) story of a daughter who grows to be a woman … through dance.

I liked it better than the movie

This series kind of missed its window of opportunity - but it didn't help that it was scheduled where it's target audience was sure to miss it. I actually liked it better than the movie. I thought the writing was better and the acting in many ways was better. I thought Patrick Cassidy had a better feel of who Johnny Castle was than his movie counterpart. All in all, I thought the series had a better feel for the characters and period. It's a shame it never found an audience.

How lives the widow of the star of "Dirty Dancing" Patrick Swayze - Lisa Niemi

For those 57 years of life that he was allowed to live, Patrick Swayze managed to do a lot. He entered the history of world cinema with his roles in the films Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Point Break. He became an ideal for millions of fans: talented, attractive, charismatic. But for Swayze, there was nothing more important than family: he lived with his only wife Lisa for 34 years, until his last day. True, a few years after the death of the sex symbol, the legend of the ideal love story began to crumble. Shocking details emerged.

    Olga Moiseeva

    Getty Images

Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi were considered the perfect couple: they were connected not only by mutual love, but also by common interests, both were talented dancers, did a lot to protect the environment, loved to travel, drove a helicopter ... But after death Patrick Lisa was bombarded with accusations. Let's tell you what the widow of the stars of "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghosts" was reproached for.

    Content of the article

    "Mama's boy"? No - fighter!

He was fond of dancing from early childhood. And how could it be otherwise? After all, Patrick's mother, a successful dancer, taught at a ballet school, and, of course, taught her son to dance. For a while, Patrick even had to endure the ridicule of his peers: he was teased as a “sissy”. But this did not last long. In addition to dancing, Patrick also began to engage in martial arts, and soon received a black belt in kung fu. So the classmates lost their desire to mock the strong sports guy.

First love became the main one

When Patrick was 19, he met 15-year-old Lisa Niemi: she studied at his mother's ballet school. The girl was still very young, their relationship began with a touching friendship, sealed with a passion for ballet. Both understood that they would have to make their own way in life, because they were from poor families. Real success could only be achieved in New York. Patrick went there first. He quickly became one of the leading dancers of Broadway, participated in ballet performances, including together with the famous Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Soon Lisa joined him. It seemed that their career should become brilliant. But one day, a long-standing knee injury that Patrick had once received made itself felt. He had to undergo several surgeries. I had to forget about ballet. And Swayze began attending acting school, deciding to use his abilities in films.

    "Dirty Dancing" made a star

He was offered the role of dancers: well, who else could a former ballet dancer play? Patrick soon became bored with the monotonous images. And, after reading the script for Dirty Dancing, he thought about turning it down: the same thing again! A banal love story of a rich spoiled girl and a hired dancer who entertains bored ladies in a prestigious resort. But he decided to take it anyway. The unprecedented success of the film was a surprise not only for Swayze, but for the entire film crew. The 35-year-old leading man has proven that he is capable of deep dramatic images. He was nominated for the Golden Globe - for the first time in his life! And, of course, Patrick became the object of admiration for many women. And we have already talked about the fate of his partner in this film, Jan Grey.

Fighting addiction: saved by his wife

But for the artist there were no other women: he loved his wife. Liza was the one and only for him. Patrick admitted: he did not meet a smarter woman, that's what she once "hooked" him to. However, their marriage cannot be called unconditionally happy. The couple did not have children, and Patrick suffered greatly because of this. After the second miscarriage, Lisa also plunged into depression, but Patrick began to drown his grief in alcohol, and Lisa was not up to her own worries: she had to save her husband. She struggled for a long time with the addiction of the actor, who, as if on purpose, tried to destroy himself, destroy himself. Only her efforts helped Swayze cope: realizing that he could lose his beloved, he agreed to undergo treatment.

"Ghost" - a new round of popularity

Meanwhile, his career began to decline. The audience began to forget the charming dancer. Fortunately, the offer to star in "Ghost" arrived. The role of the deceased guy, who continues to protect his beloved even after death, lifted Patrick to a new height. The film did not just repeat the success of Dirty Dancing - it surpassed this success by making both Whoopi Goldberg and other actors a star. And soon another tape with the participation of Patrick thundered: "On the crest of a wave." He played a member of a gang of surfers who robbed banks, hiding their faces under the masks of US presidents. The audience was delighted not only with Swayze's talent, but also with the complex tricks that he performed in the frame on his own. It was very risky, more than once the artist found himself on the verge of death. But he became the "Sexiest Man on the Planet" according to People magazine.

    Health problems

Patrick's fascination with dangerous stunts almost led to his death on the set of the film Assassin's Letters: he fell off his horse and broke both legs. He was treated for a long time, but nevertheless recovered, and even continued to dance and famously ride horses on his California ranch. Nothing foreshadowed trouble. Until one day he went to the doctors because of unexpected pains in his stomach. The diagnosis sounded disappointing: pancreatic cancer.

Dirty rumors about the widow of the Dirty Dancing star

Patrick and Lisa bravely fought for his life. The actor received all the necessary treatment. Lisa personally piloted the plane, taking her husband to the doctors to undergo procedures. But everything was useless. September 14, 2009 Patrick Swayze passed away. A few years after the death of the actor, a scandal erupted in the press. Charlotte Stevens, who introduced herself as Patrick's childhood friend, said that in the last months of his life the actor was subjected to domestic violence by his wife: they say, Lisa, taking advantage of his helpless position and weakness (Patrick lost weight to 40 kilograms), systematically beat her husband and did not let him in. relatives to him. Lisa Niemi denied these words. Someone believed her, someone - Charlotte.

Sold all his belongings by auction

Some time later, in 2017, the name of Lisa Niemi again sounded in a negative way: it became known that Swayze's widow, by that time married to a millionaire jeweler, was selling at auction absolutely all of Patrick's personal belongings. This caused stormy indignation of the relatives of the actor. They called Lisa greedy and unprincipled: they say, she did not even give Patrick's mother his cowboy boots, which the woman wanted to put on the fireplace next to her husband's boots.

Lisa retorted: she just wants to share the memory of her dead husband with his fans. Swayze's widow added that she would send all the proceeds from the sale of her husband's personal belongings to the cancer fund. Lisa is sure: Patrick himself would approve of all her actions, including a new marriage. He really wanted her to be happy.

HISTORY OF THE MAKING OF THE FILM DIRTY DANCES (1987)

Dirty Dancing is a 1987 cult American melodrama starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, which tells about the rapprochement of two young people from different social strata on the basis of their passion for ballroom dancing. Initially conceived as a low-budget film, the picture became one of the highest-grossing films at the box office, grossing over $170 million in the year it was released.

Kenny Ortega with Patrick Swayze's Wax Figure

As of 2009, the film earned $214 million worldwide, becoming the first home movie to sell nearly half a million copies.

The film's soundtrack was certified platinum, and "Time of my life" won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Song, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Duet. The film spawned the prequel Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights as well as the musical Dirty Dancing.

On August 17, 1987, a film directed by a not-too-famous director Emil Ardolino with the name Dirty Dancing, which is quite enticing for teenagers, was released in the US. The film's modest budget of $6 million and the absence of first-rate stars did not bode well for the project's commercial success. But a small miracle happened.

    Dirty Dancing

This American film was the surprise of the 1987 season. Obviously unremarkable in terms of plot and cheap in terms of costs, the picture was among the record holders of rental not only in the United States, but also far beyond America, eventually exceeding its budget by almost 36 times, reaching a full-weight 213 million!

Apparently, this success was facilitated by the nostalgia of many people, wherever they were, for the irrevocably gone era of illusions and hopes of the early 60s. Significantly accurate determination of the time of action. Summer 1963 years: A few months before the assassination of John F. Kennedy and even before the triumphant conquest of America by the Beatles.

It seems that disparate events are equalized, but there is nothing blasphemous in this. The death of the president was followed by violent political upheavals, and the youth rebellion of the 60s was just passing under the sign of "Beatlemania".

The plot of the film, written by Eleanor Burlsteen, is a classic melodrama.

In the summer of 1963, seventeen-year-old Frances Houseman, nicknamed Baby (some translations - Baby Houseman), an innocent spoiled girl from a wealthy family, spends her holidays with her parents at a resort hotel.

    "Dirty Dancing"

She meets Johnny, a handsome professional dancer, experienced in matters of life and love. As if spellbound by sexual rhythms and unrestrained rhythm and blues “dirty dancing” moves, Baby becomes Johnny’s apprentice partner, both in dancing and in love…

When Johnny’s partner, Penny, is forced to have an abortion and unable to perform at one of the evenings, Johnny faces a choice: lose his job or learn a new partner in the minimum time. Baby comes to the rescue and selflessly offers herself as his partner.

After a few days of intense rehearsals, Johnny and Baby perform at a nearby hotel. Baby has to hide her affection for a member of the lower class in front of intelligent parents, people who value their reputation and want their daughter Frances a worthy couple. But she can't help her feelings and secretly meets with a charismatic dancer.

However, circumstances develop in such a way that she has to tell her parents, and at the same time the owner of the boarding house, about her relationship with Johnny, and he is fired. But he returns on the final evening and interrupts the boring and dull program in order to dance the last dance with Baby. As a result, the father admits that he was wrong about Johnny, and ceases to be angry with his daughter. A boring evening turns into a celebration where guests and staff dance together to the song "The time of my life".

From Dirty Dancing. Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes-The Time Of My Life

    Dirty Dancing

recognition all over the world. In the tape "Dirty Dancing" (and those were called the choreographic undertakings of young dancers who were too frank at that time, who imitated Latin Americans), a somewhat naive period of "rhythm and blues" was reproduced, but many of the former tunes seem to be songs in the "disco" style of the late 70s or pop music from the 80s.

It is no coincidence that the musical numbers written especially for the film do not stand out from the general style either. Everything returns - and the new turns out to be familiar for a long time.

Here is the picture of the 44-year-old director Emil Ardolino, who made his debut in big cinema (previously he made documentary works about dances and television feature tapes), perhaps, built on the basis of the effect of a kind of recognition and recall.

In particular, American viewers perceived what was told through the prism of a whole group of films about the early 60s (American Graffiti, Outcasts, Rumble Fish, etc. ), also noticing a clear echo with the popular Saturday Fever in the evening".

And without all this context, Ardolino's film would have remained a rather ordinary story of a girl, Francis, nicknamed Baby, who belongs to a wealthy family, and falls in love with a poor but handsome dancer Johnny Castle in a summer holiday home.

From Dirty Dancing. Eric Carmen – Hungry eyes

    "Dirty Dancing"

The film's script is largely based on screenwriter Eleanor Bergsten's own story. She was the youngest daughter of a Jewish doctor in New York and had spent the summer with her family at the CatsKills boarding house, competed in Dirty Dancing, and everyone around her called her Baby.

In 1980, Eleanor wrote the screenplay for a Michael Douglas film. But due to too strong erotic background and no consensus found, the script was not finally approved. Then the screenwriter created a new script, where the emphasis was exclusively on dancing.

In 1984, she left the MGM executive producer and began working with Linda Gottlieb. Eleanor completed the script in 1985. The main actions were launched in 1963. The character of Baby was based on Bergsten herself, and Johnny was based on Michael Terrace, a dance teacher from CatsKills whom the screenwriter met in a boarding house while writing the script. The film's final script was rejected by several studios again.

Bergsten chose Kenny Ortega, who was a student of the legendary dancer Gene Kelly, as choreographer. When it came to choosing a set for filming, the writers couldn't find anything suitable in Catskills, so they decided to shoot in two locations: Lure Lake in North Carolina and the Mountain Lake resort near Roanoke, Virginia. During installation, it is not noticeable at all that the places are not nearby.

    Dirty Dancing

Elinor Bergstein - screenwriter of the film

Quite a long time ago there lived a girl in Brooklyn named Eleanor Bergstein, who was known as Baby on the local dance floors. She was fond of Cuban and African dances, which were under an unspoken ban due to overflowing sexual overtones.

In the conservative press, which reflected the views of the US government, these dances were mentioned only with the epithet "dirty". But on the outskirts, far from the chaste official eye, "dirty dancing" competitions were held, and Baby was their indispensable participant. And her parents conscientiously paid for her ballet studio, not suspecting how, where and with whom their child disposes of the acquired skills.

But Elinor didn't just want to win amateur competitions. She dreamed of bringing "dirty dancing" out of the underground. This dream resulted in a work about a 17-year-old girl from a good family, who was transformed from an awkward ugly duckling into a beautiful plastic swan by her love for a dance teacher.

    Peanut Butter Cinema

For several years, Eleanor hounded the doorsteps of film studios, trying to get her creation to fit. Finally, the management of a small independent film company lost their nerve: they scraped together $5,000,000 for production and promised two weeks of release. The project was headed by debutant director Emil Ardolino, and little-known actors were entrusted with the main roles.

    "Dirty Dancing"

The budget deficit began to show from the first days of filming. The rest house was rented at an affordable price only in the state of Virginia, and the directorate forced the filmmakers to wait until the end of the season. The film crew had to shoot the summer among the yellow autumn trees. Green spray paint solved the problem of yellowness, but no amount of force could keep the leaves on the branches. Therefore, in some scenes, unnaturally green foliage is treacherously showered around the heroes dressed in summer.

“We didn't have money for dinners for extras, so I fed the actors peanut butter cookies,” recalls Eleanor Bergstein. “And between takes, I had to lock the doors so they wouldn’t scatter. ” In order not to drag out the process, Ardolino tried to shoot everything in one take.

From Dirty Dancing. Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs - Stay

When Johnny and Baby's last dance was being filmed, Patrick Swayze landed badly after jumping from the stage into the audience and injured his knee, but continued to dance so as not to spoil the successful take. The director admired the expression of grim determination on the face of the actor, not realizing that he was barely breathing from pain.

While the film crew was making labor exploits, the film company found a rental sponsor - a pharmaceutical company that decided to advertise an acne remedy on the movie posters.

    "Dirty Dancing"

Advertisers made one condition - to remove the scene of Penny's illegal abortion from the film. You can’t, the screenwriter objected, who categorically did not want her romantic story to be associated with acne and boils. If Penny does not decide to terminate the pregnancy in such a barbaric way, Johnny will not need a new partner, and the plot will lose its meaning. Advertisers refused the deal, but the picture broke all box office records without their help.

“The secret of the film's success is that there is a dancer in each of us,” says Eleanor Bergstein. – Each of us wants to learn how to dance in ten days, as Bebi did. And the film makes you believe that this is possible. And I, as a former dancer, confirm that this is possible if you really want to.

Five minutes and ten years away!

Patrick Swayze already had several roles behind him, but in the auditions for other films he was still perceived not as an actor, but as a dancer who was released due to injuries and had nowhere to put himself. The Dirty Dancing auditions were the only ones where his ballet background helped rather than prevented him from getting the part.

    "Dirty Dancing"

Jennifer Grey, the daughter of a Broadway actor, had moderate dance training and a non-standard appearance necessary for the film, but was ten years older than the heroine. Realizing that the director was about to "disqualify" her, Jennifer asked for five minutes to transform into a teenage girl, and in exactly five minutes she got the role!

On set, professional Patrick found it difficult to dance with an amateur who was specifically required to move worse than she could. There is a scene in the film where his character Johnny runs his fingers along Baby's outstretched arm in a dance, and she is tickled and laughs instead of portraying passion.

This is not a planned episode, but footage from a rehearsal where Patrick tried to teach his partner a dance element until she drove him crazy with her laughter. Ardolino soon realized that he was unlikely to get a natural reaction from the actors after the command "Motor!", Therefore, for the most part, the scenes of Johnny and Baby's rehearsals are Patrick and Jennifer's rehearsals, discreetly filmed by the cameraman at the director's instigation.

That's how the episode where Johnny and Baby crawl towards each other through the ballet class got into the picture - while warming up before shooting, the actors started fooling around, and Ardolino filmed it.

    "Dirty Dancing"

The budget deficit began to affect the first days of filming.

“And between takes, I had to lock the doors so they wouldn’t scatter.” In order not to drag out the process, Ardolino tried to shoot everything in one take.

When Johnny and Baby's last dance was filmed, Patrick Swayze landed badly after jumping from the stage into the audience and injured his knee, but continued to dance so as not to spoil the successful take. The director admired the expression of grim determination on the face of the actor, not realizing that he was barely breathing from pain.

While the film crew was making labor exploits, the film company found a rental sponsor - a pharmaceutical company that decided to advertise an acne remedy on the movie posters. Advertisers set one condition - to remove the scene of Penny's illegal abortion from the film.

No way, objected the screenwriter, who absolutely did not want her romantic story to be associated with acne and boils.

    Where is she now?

Like Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Gray became a star after the film's release. And I decided to fulfill my old dream - to make myself a pretty neat nose. The operation was unsuccessful, and after the correction, the actress changed so that even her good friends stopped recognizing her.

The actress calls plastic surgery the worst mistake of her life. Inviting her to audition, the directors expected to see Baby, but they saw an average Hollywood young lady, only vaguely reminiscent of the heroine of Dirty Dancing. Now Jennifer is rarely removed, mainly in television films and serials. In July 2001, the actress, who was then forty-two years old, married actor Clark Gregg, and in December of the same year gave birth to a daughter, Stella.
