How long has dancing with the stars been on air

Where Is 'Dancing with the Stars' Filmed and How Long Has It Been On?

Dancing with the Stars is the American spinoff of the British dance competition series Strictly Come Dancing. Since the competition reality show airs live on Disney+ (formerly ABC) every week, many fans are curious about where the show takes place. Learn more about the history of the competition series, including how long it has been on the air, where Dancing with the Stars films, and how they make part of the DWTS finale specials happen at The Grove.

‘Strictly Come Dancing’ debuted in 2004

Before Dancing with the Stars, there was Strictly Come Dancing. The British dance contest paired celebrities with professional ballroom dancers to perform ballroom and Latin dance styles.

Strictly Come Dancing premiered on May 14, 2004. Bruno Tonioli and Len Goodman, who both appear on Dancing with the Stars, were previously judges on Strictly Come Dancing.  Other Strictly judges have included Craig Revel Horwood, Arlene Phillips, Alesha Dixon, Darcey Bussell, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke.

Strictly is still a competition show today. 2022 marked season 20 for the British competition series.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ has been on since 2005

A year after Strictly Come Dancing debuted in the United Kingdom, America got it’s own version of the competition series. Dancing with the Stars debuted on ABC on June 1, 2005. At the time, Tom Bergeron and Lisa Canning were the hosts and only six celebrities competed.

At publication, Dancing with the Stars has aired for 31 seasons. Throughout that time, the show has more than doubled the cast, changed who hosts the show, and adjusted the voting format accordingly.

Why are there so many more seasons of Dancing with the Stars than Strictly Come Dancing? In the past, DWTS would air two seasons a year, alternating with The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. After Bobby Bones’ controversial win in season 27, the show shifted to airing once a year.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ films live from Hollywood in Los Angeles

“Live from Hollywood, it’s Dancing with the Stars!” Each week, Dancing with the Stars airs live from Television City in Los Angles, California. Also known as CBS Television City, this location is home to other TV shows like The Price Is Right and formerly Wheel of Fortune and Hollywood Squares

Meanwhile, Strictly Come Dancing films at the BBC Television Centre. The show has also been filmed at Blackpool Tower, Wembley Arena, and Elstree Studios at various points.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ finale usually films part from The Grove

In years past, a portion of the Dancing with the Stars finale has been filmed live from The Grove. This high-end shopping district is the perfect backdrop for a grand spectacle like the DWTS finale, which typically takes place around the start of the holiday season each year.

The Grove isn’t far from where Dancing with the Stars films — it’s about a 10-minute walk and an even faster drive. That’s how the performers are able to get from one location to the other during these epic finale specials.

‘Dancing With the Stars’ Hosts Through the Years: Photos

Taking the lead! The Dancing With the Stars showrunners caused a stir when they replaced hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews with Tyra Banks in July 2020 — but it wasn’t the first time the role had a change of guards.

Bergeron served as the constant host for the dance competition from its 2005 debut through season 28, which aired in 2019. Ahead of his exit in the summer of 2020, he only briefly stepped away from the show to tend to his ailing father, which is when former contestant Alfonso Ribeiro filled in.

The former America’s Funniest Home Videos host, however, had his fair share of cohosts before Andrews came on board in 2014 starting with season 18.

“Love u @Tom_Bergeron!! I can’t wait … and the best part is I won’t be getting 7’s from Len [Goodman] and yelled at for not pointing my toes! #winner,” Andrews tweeted in February 2014 after news broke of her new hosting gig.

The sports journalist competed on DWTS during season 10 with pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy as her partner. They came in third place.

Bergeron and Andrews were caught off guard when ABC decided to cut them both as hosts after 11 seasons together in 2020.

“It’s been an incredible 15-year run and the most unexpected gift of my career,” Bergeron tweeted in July of that year. “I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made.”

Andrews, for her part, thanked the network for her time on the show and her longtime friend Bergeron for being by her side the whole time.

“Thank you ABC and the entire Dancing With the Stars family for 6 memorable seasons,” the former Good Morning America correspondent tweeted at the time. “Those years wouldn’t have been as special without my loving host Tom Bergeron, the talented dancers, and witty judges.”

She later reflected on the surprising career change in November 2021, exclusively telling Us Weekly that it was actually a blessing in disguise.

“I give my best to them. My schedule has been so crazy with [football commentating], the clothing line, the podcasts … trying to have a baby, that I think it was the best thing for me,” the Maine native said. “They wanted to go a different direction, and they’re doing that now. So, hopefully they’re happy.”

The Hidden Heroes producer stepped in as cohost from seasons 10 through 17 from 2010 to 2013. She previously won season 7 of the hit series while partnered with Derek Hough.

The sports commentator first appeared alongside Bergeron during season 18 of the show in 2014. Andrews remained in the role through season 28, before being fired from ABC alongside her longtime cohost in July 2020.

The King of Queens alum filled in for Andrews on three separate occasions. Remini cohosted one episode during season 19 and two episodes in season 21 while Andrews covered the 2014 and 2015 World Series.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum won season 19 of the competition in 2014 with partner Witney Carson. He later filled in for Bergeron during week four of season 21 when the former Hollywood Squares host had to take time off to tend to his sick father.

In July 2022, it was announced that the actor would return to cohost season 31.

ABC announced in July 2020 that the America’s Next Top Model creator would be taking over as the solo host for season 29 of DWTS. She also served as an executive producer for her debut season.

Following the show's move to Disney+, Banks will return to host season 31 alongside Ribeiro.

Already this Sunday on the TV channel "Russia 1" - a grandiose premiere of the new season of the show "Dancing with the Stars"! Spectators will again see how popular theater, film and stage artists conquer the main dance floor of the country.

On TV channel "Russia 1" everything is ready for the grandiose premiere of the new season of the show "Dancing with the Stars". The first episode is on the air this Sunday, January 16, at 17:50! nine0003

Serious tests and a real test of strength await the participants. They have no right to make a mistake, because only a week is given for preparation. In the rhythm of tango, rumba and jive, the contestants will strive to win and master completely new styles. Someone will be able to reach the end, and someone will have to be out of the standings. This will be decided by the viewers and the jury, which includes Daria Zlatopolskaya, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Yegor Druzhinin and Vladimir Varnava.

The new season of "Dances" promises to be bright in terms of the list of participants. This time, theater and film actors Maria Mironova, Dmitry Kharatyan, Marina Zudina, Alexandra Rebenok, Olga Medynich, Alexandra Revenko, Anatoly Bely and Valery Nikolaev, host Vladimir Markoni, and musician Vanya Dmitrienko will conquer the main dance floor of the country. A couple of them will be professional dancers - winners of international competitions. nine0003

Alexandra Rebenok admits that she has always been good at dancing, but has long dreamed of getting to know each other better. "Dancing is a special niche. You get an incredible surge of happiness hormones after a workout!" - says the star of the series "Resident". As part of the show, she hopes to master completely new styles: samba, rumba, cha-cha-cha... and attracts," the actress emphasizes. nine0003

But Anatoly Bely frankly declares that he goes through life with a dance! That is why he, without hesitation, agreed to take part in the project. The actor is especially close to jive, but he had never encountered ballroom dancing before. Together with his partner Inna Svechnikova, he patiently masters the basic steps and, of course, counts on victory. "I have a wonderful partner who just makes you fall in love with dancing," Bely assures, adding that the most important thing for him is to enjoy the process. nine0003

Well, the prima of the Moscow Art Theater Marina Zudina challenged herself with her participation in "Dances". The actress has always argued that dance is the destiny of the young. But, having received an invitation to the project, she suddenly decided on a "crazy" act. "So many years have passed, I realized that now is probably the right time to start dancing," explains Zudina. Step by step, discovering a new world of choreography, she suddenly realized what she had been deprived of all these years. “I have a feeling that I will continue to do this, for me this is the most important thing. It will be in my life,” Marina promises. nine0003
