At 19In 83, the Belgian film director Chantal Ackerman shot the documentary “Once Pina Asked Me,” and after almost 20 years of Bausch’s merit, director Lee Yanor noted with the short film “Coffee with Pina”.
It took her 15 minutes to express all her love and respect to the legendary dancer. In addition to documentaries, Pina Bausch can also be seen in feature films - with Fellini and Almodovar. Film classics and documentary filmmakers were more fortunate than Wim Wenders - they had the opportunity not only to work with Pina Bausch, but also to demonstrate their creations to her. For 106 minutes, the artists share their memories of the years of work with Pina Bausch, confess their love to her and for the first time talk about what they were afraid to tell their mentor during her lifetime. Where there are not enough words, significant dances and heartfelt music come to the rescue. Some generally prefer to remain silent, throwing out all their pain and gratitude in expressive movements.
The film reflects four of the brightest and most famous performances by Pina Bausch - Café Müller, Full Moon, Kontakthof and The Rite of Spring. Individual dance numbers Wim Wenders transfers from the stage to the fresh air. As a result, cities with their industrial zones and highways, as well as forests, mountains and reservoirs, become scenery, to which Bausch herself attached so much importance. Frozen pictures suddenly take on movement. Everything dances - from trees to railway stations. Where the idea of the production laid down by Bausch is not fully understood, it is the musical work that makes it possible to understand everything.
The latest technologies, previously used by filmmakers for entertainment purposes, help the director to convey his whole idea to the end, to penetrate the very essence of the dance action. Sometimes it seems that you are dancing a part on the sand or walking in a column of artists behind weightless swaying curtains. It's rain pouring down on you from the ceiling. A little more and you will take a step onto the stage of the Wuppertal Opera House, so that, waiting for the first chord, you will tell your story of unrequited love and loneliness. From an overabundance of feelings, sometimes it takes your breath away. The body, so soft and limp, at the moment is pulled by a string, responding to dance passes to the music, leading to a state of catharsis.
