Take yourself back to April of 2020 (if you dare!) The world was reeling from quarantines, shutdowns, uncertainty and fear due to the Coronavirus. Out of the 30 students I was teaching privately at the time, 95% postponed their weddings to a later date and I found myself, like many of my colleagues in the wedding industry, essentially unemployed.

What’s a girl to do?

Unfortunately, the global pandemic is forcing couples to reimagine their ceremonies and receptions to reduce the chance of spreading the virus.

But because this virus is forcing so many changes, and because change can be stressful, I would encourage couples to think about all of the traditions you can keep the exact same as you have planned when reimagining your wedding.

One of those traditions is the first dance.

Brides's Editorial Guidelines

Updated on 11/15/21

After Vish Iyer and Jensen Ishida said “I do” on September 10, 2021 in Los Angeles, 500 guests watched as they spun around the dancefloor to the choreographed dance they’d been practicing for months. A month later, Vish says more than 1 million people around the world—from Malaysia to India to Korea and beyond—had witnessed the original number in a “little cut” she uploaded the week after the nuptials on TikTok.

“Honestly, I get goosebumps every time I tell this story,” admits the bride. “It happened like overnight. I would open Tiktok, and I’d have 10 notifications. Then, 100, and it didn't stop for like an entire week. It just kept going and going and going.”

And it didn’t just spread on TikTok. The video truly went “viral,” with people sharing the clip—along with several more that she posted after—on Instagram, WhatsUp, and, eventually, more syndicated media platforms than Vish could name.

So, why the viral success? Vish predicts it being a combination of things. First, she and her husband Jensen designed the dance to celebrate their intercultural union (she is Indian; he is half-Korean and half-Japanese). They did this with their song choice, as well as with their decision to do one dance together instead of the multiple, more traditional dances with women on one side and men on the other. “We wanted it to be something that incorporated our cultures and meant something to us as well,” explains the bride. “I think that's what made it special, and that's what made it intriguing.”

The song choice—Blueberry Eyes (feat. SUGA of BTS) - MAX—was also a big factor, according to Vish. “It’s rare to see an Indian or intercultural wedding dance to an American song,” she explains, saying that the music tends to be Indian (at least at the Indian weddings she’s been to). “And, it’s not just that! It's such a fun song, and I’m not sure it’s really been done before for a first dance. But it’s really so perfect and so sweet. It's just such a romantic song in a very cute way.”

Interested in making your own first dance go viral? We spoke with two professional dancers, a wedding photographer, and a recent bride who "went viral for all the right reasons" for dos, don’ts, and must-know tricks for how.

Design by Tiana Crispino; Photo by Jimmy Raper

First, Decide If a First Dance Is Right For You

It’s 2021, and you’re allowed to break whatever wedding traditions you want! And that goes for the first dance, too. Just as you can choose to forgo traditional vows or skip the father-daughter walk down the aisle, you can say “no” to the first dance with no reason other than you don’t want to do it.

“In all honesty, I don't think first dances are for everyone. [Not] every couple doesn’t want to do a first dance, and that’s OK,” admits photographer Ruby Simmons of Ruby Olivia Photography in New York City. “My advice is to not do it if you don’t want to, because, if you’re just going to stand there, then that's uncomfortable for everybody else. I think what makes a good first dance is, honestly, wanting to be there and wanting to do it.”

Make It Your Own

“Focus on what YOU think is fun, and not pleasing other people,” advises Austin and Marideth Telenko, the newlywed couple and choreography duo behind Cost n’ Mayor. They went viral during the pandemic and now have 2.8 million TikTok followers. (There are even 10.5 million likes on their first dance alone.) “When you look back on your wedding day, you're going to remember how you felt in the moment, not how loud everyone clapped or what they said to each other on the way home.

To accomplish this, “focus on what feels natural, what feels fun, and what feels like YOU," adds the couple. Also, don’t take yourself too seriously. "If you're having fun and being yourself, you can't go wrong!” Ruby Olivia agrees. “That’s the beauty of the first dance—it's kind of a moment for you to be publicly like this is us, this is our dance,” she says.

Design by Tiana Crispino; Photo by Ryan Ray

Create Some Original Moves

To that point, Vish encourages couples to think beyond traditional dance moves and instead look at how you and your partner interact with each other naturally. While she admits that she watched plenty of YouTube videos for inspiration, she also took her own advice before choreographing her first dance with husband Jensen, who she admits is not a comfortable dancer. “I wanted to come up with something close to your heart so I studied what we did on a day-to-day basis and even filmed us,” she says. “You’d be surprised what looks good! Some of our best moves come from an inside joke.

Choose a Meaningful Song

“Don’t stress out about finding a song that means something to you,” Vish says. “In the process of building this dance, the song becomes special. So, if you both love it, go for it.” That said, a great song can go a long way. After witnessing nearly 100 first dances behind the camera, Ruby Olivia has a few pointers, here. The most important being that it’s fine to skip the classics! “Who cares about those songs, anymore?!” she adds with a laugh.

In addition to the five favorites above, Ruby Olivia points to a recent couple's first dance as the perfect example. “This wedding was in Dallas, but they were moving to New York the next month. So, they danced to ‘New York, New York’ by Frank Sinatra,” she recalls. The BTS video was her first to go viral on TikTok, partly because of the song choice, but also because lightning struck in the back of the video at just the right moment. “I was kind of all the elements! It was a really tender moment. It was clear that this was a tip for brides; and it was just sentimental,” she says of it going viral. “It really hit home.”

Involve Your Friends

"For our wedding dance, we involved our entire wedding party... including our parents!" says Austin and Marideth. "There were many different levels and abilities we had to consider when choreographing the number. We were worried it might be a mess, but genuinely knew in our hearts that if it DID end up being a train wreck, it would only be that much more memorable! Sometimes, a good train wreck is what makes the best and funniest memories to look back on. If you think about it like that, it's a win-win!"

This is another good move for couples who don't love the spotlight, Robin Olivia says. Instead of dancing for two minutes alone, coordinate with your wedding party or simply wave everyone in after 30 seconds.

Design by Tiana Crispino; Photo by Joel Serrato

Practice But Don’t Expect Perfection

“Make sure you're creating a dance that you feel comfortable with!” advises Austin and Marideth. “It's a moment to enjoy, not a moment to go for the gold and attempt something difficult or out of your comfort zone. Everyone is there to celebrate you! So have fun, be yourself, and know there's no pressure”

And, when in doubt, remember: everyone loves a good dip and a special move here and there.

Simply Have Fun!

Last, but not least, the most important piece of advice: Have fun! “People have fun watching people have fun! It's less about how perfect a dance is or how clean and precise the steps are. The BEST memories are created when people just lose themselves in the joy of a moment,” says Austin and Marideth. “Dancing on your wedding day is the most incredible feeling, and it's so impactful when a viewer can feel that elation with you. A super fun choreographed number is INCREDIBLY fun to watch and experience, but the way you laugh, smile, and radiate happiness dancing on the best day of your life is what will leave the lasting impression.“

How to learn to dance twerk - Lifehacker

November 21, 2020LikbezSports and fitness

The size of the priests does not matter!

Twerk is just a super sexy dance that will pump your plasticity, and at the same time load your abs and back muscles well. To begin with, we will learn a few basic movements, and then we will diversify the dance vocabulary and analyze the main mistakes. And at the end you will find a bonus in the form of a playlist with suitable music.

If you have problems with your lumbar spine, exercise with caution, or better yet, consult your doctor.

Learn how to do basic elements

Booty pop back

Stand with your feet wider than shoulder width, toes slightly apart. Bend your knees and place your hands on your hips, turning them inward with your fingers, bend your lower back.

From this position, twist the pelvis down, and then, due to the deflection in the lower back, return it to its original position. Imagine that you are trying to reach the top of your head with your pelvis.

It is important to fix the upper back and work only on the lower back. You can not strain the gluteal muscles, otherwise the movement will turn out to be clamped.

If difficulties arise, try the lead-in exercise first. Place your hands on your hips so that your middle fingers rest on the protruding bones of the pelvis in front, and your thumbs - behind, closer to the sacrum. Bend your knees, move your pelvis down and then up, controlling the movement with your hands.

When you feel more confident, remove your hands and connect the movement with your knees. When the pelvis goes down, the knees bend, when it rises, they unbend. No need to lock the knees at the extreme point, they should remain slightly bent.

The pelvis moves back not only due to the straightening of the knees. The lower back must work.

Front booty pop

This movement is very similar to the previous one, only the emphasis is on pushing the pelvis forward rather than backward.

Stand with your feet wide and point your toes slightly out. You can put your hands on your hips to better feel the tilt. At the same time, bend your knees and sharply move your pelvis forward so that your butt goes down, and then bend your lower back and bring your pelvis back.

The emphasis is on the first phase of the movement, when the butt goes down. It is important at this moment not to pinch the buttocks, but to change the position of the pelvis due to the tension of the abdominal muscles.

Try other twerk moves

Double

This element repeats the usual booty pop, only the movement of the pelvis in it is double: down-down, up-up.

Suffle twerk

Stand with your feet wider than shoulder width. At the same time, turn one leg with your toe and knee out and transfer your weight to the opposite thigh. Then, with a small jump, switch sides.

First try to move slowly to get the point, then speed up. Jump relaxed.

Up down twerk

Arch your lower back and push your pelvis back. On the count of “one”, simultaneously round the lower back, bringing the pelvis forward, bend the knees and bring the shoulders forward. On the count of "two", bend your lower back and take your ass back in a semi-squat.

On the count of three, straighten your knees, round your lower back, and roll your shoulders forward. On the count of four, arch your back in the thoracic region, straightening your shoulders.

It turns out that at the lower point you bend in the lower back, and at the top - in the chest.

Wobble

To feel the movement, start slowly. Place your feet shoulder-width apart, place your palms opposite the pelvis. In turn, touch the palms with one or the other bone of the pelvis. Accelerate gradually.

You can wobble while standing upright or bent over. Practice slowly bending over and back up as you move. Important: you should not pinch, otherwise stiffness will occur and no shaking will work.

Zig zag

Get into a twerk stance, lower your right thigh first and then your left thigh. Then, one by one, lift them up to their original position. At first, perform the elements slowly, with fixation at each point, and then gradually accelerate.

You can do this movement a little higher. In this case, start with a stance on straight legs in an incline. In the same way, lower the right and left hips in turn, bending the knees, and then raise the hips, straightening the legs.

Stripper shake

Rise up on your toes and turn your heels in and out a little. Arch your lower back, try to relax your hips as much as possible.

This element can be performed in a straight position or bent over, moving both legs at once, or one at a time.

Roll

Stand with your feet slightly wider than your shoulders, point your toes forward, tilt your body and rest your hands on your hips. Rotate your pelvis, lowering and raising it as you go.

You can do this either in a bent over position on your hips or standing up.

Happy twerk

Start in a twerk position with your toes pointing forward. Do one regular booty pop in place, then another with the toes and knees turned out to the sides, and then the next one with them returning to a straight position.

Continue turning your toes and knees out and back, tilting your pelvis as you move.

Flash

Place your feet shoulder-width apart, rise on your toes. Pull your pelvis back a little. Move quickly from foot to foot, trying to relax your buttocks.

Twist

Raise your right leg to the side, turn it with your toe and knee inward. From this position, simultaneously transfer the weight to the left thigh and turn the raised leg with the toe outward. Return your foot to the floor and repeat on the other side.

Try moving in other positions

Twerk can be danced not only while standing, but also while squatting, on all fours and even upside down on your hands, with your feet supported against the wall. Try different positions - this will help diversify your dance.

Squatting

This is the same booty pop, only squatting. If you don't have enough stretch to move freely in a deep squat, work on your hip mobility first.

Offset to one side

Good stretch is also required for this option. Otherwise, you will not be able to relax and move freely.

On all fours

First practice the standing element to get used to it. Raise one leg on the toe, turning it with the knee outward and at the same time leaning on the opposite thigh. Then smoothly switch sides.

Now place your palms on the floor, arch your lower back, bend your knees and lift your heels off the floor. Perform a familiar movement in a new position.

This is enough to get you started. Try, combine the movements with each other and, if something fails, correct the mistakes.

Understand why you don't succeed

There are three main reasons why instead of twerking you get some bullshit. And the size of the priests has nothing to do with it.

1. You lack flexibility

To twerk well, you must have good mobility in the lumbar spine and hips. If flexibility is lacking, you can improve it by doing stretching exercises.

Choose stretching exercises 🤸🏻‍♀️

  • 50 exercises to stretch the muscles of the whole body

2.

You work your upper back and shoulders

All basic movements require arching in the lower back. It is due to the lower spine that you feed the pelvis back and forth. But if during booty pop you bend in the thoracic spine and connect your shoulders, the movement will not look like a twerk.

3. You're too tight

This is probably the biggest beginner's mistake, which results in a tight, wooden pelvic movement instead of sexual shaking.

Don't push yourself too hard, relax your buttocks and thighs, shake off tension from your arms and shoulders. All elements should be carried out easily and without clamps. The best way to relax and feel the movement is to turn on the music.

Pick up the music

We found a cool audio compilation that makes you want to dance to and not stop. The description on YouTube has the names of all the tracks.

And another big selection, this time from Yandex. Music. There are some great tracks too, and some of them are pretty slow paced so you can learn the moves in a relaxed and casual way.

Write in the comments how your twerking is going. It turns out?

What to do if YouTube does not open

1.

Check your network connection

The first thing to assume is a problem with the Internet in general. Try to open any other site other than YouTube. If nothing loads, turn off your router for 10 seconds. Then start again and try to open the site. If the Internet is there and only YouTube does not work, move on.

2. Check YouTube availability

There are times when YouTube crashes due to problems with Google servers, despite their reliability. It is worth making sure that maybe the problem with YouTube is not only with you, but with all Web users in general.

To do this, try to open the site not only on your computer, but also on your smartphone via a mobile connection. If it is available, then your ISP has a problem. Another option is to open one of the services to choose from: Down Detector and Down For Everyone or Just Me. Enter youtube.com into a line and press Enter.

If the service tells you that YouTube is not available to all users, there is nothing you can do. Just wait for Google to fix it.

If it turns out that you're the only one with the problem, continue on this list.

3. Find out if YouTube is available in your region

This can be checked using the Down Detector. Type youtube.com , press Enter, and then Crash Map. And you will see in which countries the service does not work for some reason.

If YouTube is not available in your area, use one of the VPN browser extensions or the iOS and Android apps to regain access to the service.

What to do if a YouTube video does not play in a browser

1. Refresh the page in this spirit. In this case, first refresh the page. The simplest and most banal method, which sometimes works.

2. Close and reopen the browser

Sometimes the browser cannot close normally. So launch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc , right-click on the Chrome process there and select End Task. Then open your browser again.

3. Restart your computer

Universal remedy for all problems. Reboot and open YouTube again.

4. Update your browser

Older versions of browsers have problems playing videos on web pages. Therefore, it does not hurt to go into the settings and check for updates.

In Chrome and similar web browsers, click Menu → Help → About Browser. If there is an update, wait for it to install and click Restart.

5. Clear the cache and cookies

In Chrome, click "Menu" → "More tools" → "Clear browsing data" → "Advanced". Check "Cookies and other site data" and "Images and other files stored in the cache" and click "Clear data". Then go back to YouTube. To learn how to do this in other browsers, check out our guide.

6. Open a tab in incognito mode

If videos play normally in incognito mode, you may have a problem with browser extensions and they somehow interfere with video playback. Therefore, turn on the YouTube video in a private tab. Did it start up fine? Disable all your extensions, and then run one at a time, while opening the video in a regular tab. This way you will find which addon is breaking YouTube for you and remove it.

7. Turn on JavaScript

You may have turned off JavaScript in your browser because you heard it made surfing more "safe". So, without JavaScript, YouTube does not work - turn it back on. In Chrome, this is done as follows: "Menu" → "Settings" → "Advanced" → "Privacy and Security" → "Site Settings" → JavaScript. Activate the switch.

8. Select the appropriate video quality

The video may start but is too slow and choppy. Click on the gear icon in the player and select a lower quality. This will make the download go faster.

9. Disable hardware acceleration

Sometimes this feature also interferes with video playback. Try disabling and opening YouTube again. If it doesn't help, run it back.

In Chrome and similar browsers, the hardware acceleration switch is located here: "Menu" → "Settings" → "Advanced" → "System" → "Use hardware acceleration (if available)".

In Firefox, the steps are slightly different: Menu → Preferences → General → Performance. Uncheck "Use recommended performance settings". There will be a checkmark "Use hardware acceleration whenever possible", uncheck it.

10. Update your video drivers

Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager. Open the "Display adapters" section, right-click the name of your video card and click "Update Driver".

11. Reset browser settings

In Chrome and similar browsers, click "Menu" → "Settings" → "Advanced" → "Reset settings and remove malware" → "Restore default settings".

In Firefox, type about:support into the address bar, press Enter. Then click Refresh Firefox. Or just uninstall and reinstall the browser.

What to do if YouTube does not work on your smartphone

1. Disable and re-enable Wi‑Fi and mobile connection

This is the easiest thing to do. You may be having internet problems and restarting the connection might help. Turn on airplane mode for a minute and then turn it off.

2. Connect to a different wireless network

If you are not at home but in a cafe, there may be a problem with your local Wi-Fi network. Connect to another.

3. Reboot the device

Many problems can be solved in this simple way. Press and hold the power button until the shutdown menu appears. Then select the "Reboot" option.

4. Update your operating system

On older versions of the OS, you may experience problems with YouTube and other applications, so be sure to update. On Android, open "System" → "Advanced Settings" → "System Update". On iOS: "Settings" → "General" → "Software Update".

5. Open YouTube in your browser

There may be a problem with the YouTube app. Try opening the desired video in a mobile browser such as Chrome.

6. Update the YouTube app

Older versions of the app may not work properly. So go to Google Play or the App Store and make sure you have the latest version of YouTube installed.
