How to Measure Your Dancers:

Have dancers wear fitted attire (preferably a leotard–no street clothes!) with proper undergarments in order to ensure the most accurate measurements.

When measuring, instruct dancers to stand up straight, look forward, and take a deep breath in & out to allow for a natural fit and additional room. This is especially important when taking the girth, bust, and waist measurements.

  • Girth - Girth is the most important measurement when determining size! To measure girth, place a tape measure at the top of the shoulder (typically where a standard leotard strap sits), then over the apex (fullest part of the chest), down through the crotch and back up to the same shoulder. Measuring tape should follow close to the body shape.
  • Bust/Chest - Measure over the apex (fullest part of the chest) with your arms relaxed at your sides. Tape must be horizontal around the body.
  • Waist - Find your natural waist breakpoint by bending to the side (typically 1" to 1 1/2" above the belly button). Stand straight and measure around your natural waist breakpoint. Make sure breathing is relaxed during this measurement. Tape must be horizontal around the body.
  • Hips - Measure around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks while standing with your feet together. Tape must be horizontal around the body.
  • Inseam - Measure from the center crotch point to floor for full length inseam and to center of ankle bone for ankle length inseam.

Sizing Tips For Success

  • Watch our handy "How to Measure" video
  • For consistency, select one person to take all measurements using the same measuring tape each time.
  • Make finding the right fit even easier with our Studio-To-Stage Leotard Sizing Set (style STSSET) for dancewear and Spotlight Leotard Sizing Set (style SPLSET) for costumes and performance styles.
  • When ordering a few months in advance, it’s recommended to add 1.5” to 2” to the girth measurement to account for growth (especially for little ones’ growth spurts). If dancers are between sizes, select the size that most closely corresponds to the girth measurement. And when in doubt, size up!
  • Keep the type of fabric and silhouette in mind when ordering as dancers’ natural body variations can impact the overall fit.
  • Take a photo of the entire group of dancers to use for size comparison and later reference.

Make sure measurements are taken correctly! The tape measure should follow all the curves in the body. Measurements should not be taken loose or bigger than what they are.

Dancewear by Patricia will not be responsible for ill-fitting costumes or returns due to wrong measurements.

Please follow these guidelines when measuring:

  • NEVER measure yourself

  • Have a Seamstress or Professional Dance teacher who is familiar with taking measurements take them for you.

  • Make the time and allow an uninterrupted session with the Measurer.

  • Read the Instructions thoroughly for each measurement first and measure twice.

  • Write them down carefully.

  • Write clearly using a Black pen and state clearly if the measurements were taken in Inches or in centimeters.

  • Wear the garments you will be wearing underneath your Tutu or Close-fitting leotard and tights

  • Begin by tying a piece of cord or string around the exact waist–NOT where you would wear your clothes but the body’s natural waist. Tie snugly.
  • This placement dictates a lot of your other measurements so it is extremely important.
  • Try and remember to take measurements around the body as horizontally as possible keeping the tape measure against the body at all times.
  • When measuring your Full body girth–from shoulder down under the crotch and back up to the same shoulder—keep the tape against the back all the way up.
  • Once completed,  check all the necessary measurements are done.
  • Then email them to us.
  • Please Contact us with any queries about this.
  • This is such an exciting time as the measurements are the start of a journey which will ultimately lead to your new Tutu!
