Bharatnatyam makeup is not very different from regular makeup looks but it is more classic. It features defined brows, a tri-coloured eyeshadow, winged eyeliner, and red lipstick. Here’s how to get the look.

Step 1: Skincare

Before beginning any makeup routine, always cleanse and moisturise your skin. Use a gentle face wash and then swipe on toner. Apply moisturiser so your skin is hydrated.

Step 2: Base Makeup

If you are a bharatnatyam dancer you will need a mattifying primer so that it ensures the makeup stays put despite sweating. Apply the primer on your face and neck and then blend on a sweat proof or matte foundation. Dust your face with setting powder so that your base is set and oil-free.

Step 4: Eye Makeup

This eye makeup is vibrant so make sure to apply an eye primer on your lids first. Begin with choosing three shades from the same colour family. For example mauve, lavender, and pink. First blend the lightest shade above your crease lines. Then apply the lavender shade on your crease line and on the upper half of your lid. Then use the pink shade closest to your lash line. Now draw on winged eyeliner and apply mascara. You can experiment with vibrant eyeshadow shades or even keep it simple with gold or copper eyeshadow.

Enhance your Bharatanatyam performance with the specially designed make-up. Use a base in a pinkish tone, and highlight your cheekbones with a suitable bush, to avoid looking pale on stage. To emphasize your eye movements, pay special attention to the eyes. Besides your regular eye-shadow routine, outline your eyes with thick black kohl lines extended at both ends. Make them meet beyond the end points of the eyes, giving a fish-like shape. Don't forget to add a dash of mascara to the lashes to make your eyes look even more expressive and alluring. Use a pencil to define and darken your eyebrows with a shade that matches your hair colour.

Energize your third eye by adding a round red or maroon bindi on the forehead. Add a white line under it, or opt for a long 'gopi' or drop shaped bindi. Outline your lips in a dark shade of red or maroon and neatly fill in with a similar shade. Make a center parting to your hair and gathering all the hair together, tie them up with a black cotton string. Add fake hair, braid into a long plait, and end it with three black cotton balls or Kunjalam, that symbolize the three worlds namely, Heaven or Akash, Earth or Dharti, and Hell or Paataal. Empower your performance by adorning your head with jewellry that represent the sun and the moon, known in Tamil as Chandra Parah and Surya Parah. Wear these. two flat round pieces, studded with gemstones and pearls. on either side of the center parting of the hair. The round one on the right, and the crescent shaped on left of the parting. They represent the existent moon and the stars - the actual adornments of Maha Dev Shiva, the Supreme Dancer,

Frame the face and adorn your centre parting with a 'Talasaman'. At the back of the head above the plait, add a specially designed hair ring and adorn it with a round flat piece known as Rakudi. Enhance the plait with nine pieces of jewelry, representing the nine planets. Finish off with fragrant white jasmine flowers and orange flowers ina semi circle at the base of the head under the plait , creating an aura of freshness and purity.

Bharthanatyam has an elaborate and intricate make up procedure, eye makeup is very prominent part of it .Makeup is always an integral part of a performance and helps an artist to convey his or her expression with the audiences.

The essence of abhinaya lies in the eyes of the dancer. To effectively express the inner feeling or ‘Saathvikaabhinaya’ through the eyes and to convey the inherent meaning of the ‘Saahitya’ the dancer needs to have prominent and expressive eyes. The dancer also conveys the ‘Rasas’ through the movement of the eye and the eye brows. Following are different movements of the eyebrows a dancer uses during a performance.

Sahaja: Natural eye brow in a composed face. Patita: When eyebrows are at rest and then lowered. Utkshipta: When either one or both eyebrows are raised. Chatura: When both brows are moved and the expression is pleasant. Rechita: One brow is raised in a charming fashion. Kunchita: When one or both eye brows are arched/bent. These movements help in expressing different bhavas and rasas in Bharthanatyam. The shape and grooming of the eyebrows will help enhance and emphasize these eyebrow movements.

So invariably eye make up takes a predominant place in Bharathanatyam makeup. For a complete eye makeup ,there are different aspects of this art which are shaping of the eyes , coloring of the eyelid and the shaping of the eyebrows.

The first step in Bharathanatyam eye make up is shaping the eyes into fish shape or lotus shape with the kajal. To give this shape , the eyeliner is applied to the eyelid and also below the eyelashes extending towards the eyebrow. The gap between the lines should be filled with kajal. Kajal should also be applied to the inner eye bringing in more distinction to the eye balls and also highlighting them.

Dancer having smaller eyes can be made to look wider by artistically shaping the eyes lotus shaped.

For the eyelid while choosing the color , we should always keep in mind the costume that is worn for the performance .The color that is chosen should have a tinge of the color of the costume so that they blend well thus enhancing the expressions further more. Mascara should be applied to the eyelashes ,so that the eye movements look striking and beautiful The eyebrows are shaped into a rainbow shape. The tip of the eyebrow should be thick, the middle should be medium thick and it should taper towards the end. Especially the movements where the dancer faces the audience sideways, the nicely shaped eyebrows look outstanding. The movement of eyebrows brings in lot of grace and elegance to the facial expressions.

The eyebrows are also shaped differently depending on the character the dancer is depicting too. If the dancer is enacting a male character, then the eyebrows have to be thicker and bigger as opposed to female characters having thinner brows shaped into a rainbow. For characters like ‘Gopikas’ , ‘Apsaras’ and the princesses , dancer can beautify the eyebrows by adorning some white dots in between red dots above the eye brows giving a majestic look.

The dancer should make the best use of the advancement in the makeup supplies that we have today while choosing the make up for eye. Waterproof kajal and eyeliners are advisable so that the make up does not spread all over because of sweat. The right shades of color should be chosen for eyelids. By using all these tips for eye makeup and beautifying the eyes, the gorgeous eye of the dancer dances and expresses along with the dancer!

Most of the south Indian Titleical dances have an intricate and elaborate costume and makeup system. Of the south Indian Titleical dance forms Kathakalli has the most complicated and elaborate process followed by Bharathanatyam , Kuchipudi , Mohiniattam. Titleical dances being a performing art the makeup is always an integral part of the performance and always becomes another medium to convey to the audiences what the dancer is trying to depict apart from also enhancing the beauty and grace of the dancer.

The art of make up has evolved with times. In olden times , the make up was very primitive with just clean face , neatly combed hair and kajal (kohl) in the eyes.Dancers used to color their lips red by chewing betel leaves and areca nut which was called as ‘Veeleya’.The jewelry worn was pure gold or silver. This kind of make up was more for suitable for a smaller auditorium and a lesser audience. The auditorium used to be a simple hall in front of the God or in the ‘Navaranga’ or in the ‘Prakaara’ of the temple devoid of any lighting .A group of 200-300 people could watch the performance. But with time as the dance form has evolved the make up system evolved as a art by itself. Now with the advances in the art of makeup , it can make wonders on stage by matching the skin color and complexion of the dancer with the right colors. This makes the dancers look gorgeous and charming. The Bharathanatyam should be cognizant of the make up and costume used for the performance since it enhances the expressions and brings out the feelings needed to emote.

In Bharathanatyam , the abhinaya and the feelings are expressed through the eyes. The abhinaya depicted can be either to the ‘saahitya’ or to the music always comes through the eyes of the dancer. As the saying in Sanskrit goes, ‘Yato hastas tato drushti Yato drushitis tato manaha Yato manahas tato bhavo Yato bhavas tato Rasaha’. The ‘bhavas’ and ‘rasas’ follows the eye movements meaning through the eyes are the bhavas and rasas depicted. Having said that , the make up of the eye becomes an important and challenging part since this defines the entire make up. It is important for the dancer to have the clear and well rested eyes for the performance. The dancer has to actually prepare by resting well the previous day , meditating 10-15 mins prior to the make up and by applying ice pack on the eyes before the make up.Also simple eye exercises like ‘Pralokita’ (moving eye balls to both sides) and ‘Saachi’(Up and down movements of the eye balls). Eye make up is usually done first and begins with shaping the eye.The eyes can be shaped into fish shape or lotus shape with the kajal.

The eyeliner is applied to the eyelid and also below the eyelashes. Both the lines extend until the eyebrow. The gap in between these lines is filled by the kajal. Even inside the eye kajal is applied. Also depending on the nature of the dance and the lighting of the auditorium , small white dots are applied on the forehead. Some even use glittering golden lines or powder. The use of mascara and eye shadow is also popular .The mascara and eye shadow should be applied carefully. The color of the eye shadow should always blend well with the costume the dancer is wearing else the ambience that the attire creates will be disturbed. The dancer should have waterproof mascara otherwise continuous sweating allows the mascara to run and smudge off the eyelashes. The mascara, eyeliner or kajal should not be smudged with the sweat. The dancer’s adept , artistic and attractive eyes on stage can talk to the audience and emote the ‘rasas’ and ‘bhavas’ effortlessly !

Before you start creating stage make-up for oriental dances, it is important to decide on the means. Here are a couple of tips that will help emphasize the natural beauty and make a spectacular make-up in an oriental style.

General rules for dance make-up

Dance make-up must be bright, otherwise the audience will simply not notice it. At the same time, it is important to choose durable products that will not let you down at a crucial moment: they will withstand the heat of spotlights, physical activity and prevent treacherous brilliance where it is important.

© Makeup. ru

The basic stage of such a make-up is competent preparation of the skin. It needs to be moisturized so that the foundation and other products lie evenly, do not emphasize peeling or enlarged pores and do not distract attention from the traditionally bright eye makeup.

© Makeup.ru

Foundation is better to choose with a matte finish. And for areas that need to be highlighted, use a highlighter. Before applying the tone, use a primer that is selected taking into account the tasks that it should solve: narrow pores, mask redness or eliminate dryness.

© Makeup.ru

To make your eye makeup durable and bright, it is better to fix creamy textures dry. This combination will enhance their color and prevent them from rolling.

As for the techniques, the most spectacular ones will come in handy: cutcrease, smoky eyes and cat eyes. And how to do makeup for oriental dances on your own, we showed step by step in the photo instructions below.

belly dance make-up

Stage make-up, as we have already said, is distinguished by its intensity. Do not be afraid to combine techniques and use bright shades. Outline the eyes in a circle, and on the lips apply a plum-colored lipstick like Siren from the Matte Lipstick line from NYX Professional Makeup.

© Makeup.ru

Or do a traditional oriental make-up with heavy eyeliner. To do this, draw arrows along the line of the upper and lower eyelids and bring them into a single ponytail. To make the look even more expressive, makeup can be supplemented with bunches of false eyelashes at the outer corners.

For those who want to make a slight accent on the eyes, a bronze haze will do. Easy to create with Urban Decay's Naked Petite Heat Palette.

STAGE make-up for blondes

Delicate shades suit blondes. But in order for the makeup to be visible to the audience, dramatic accents are indispensable. Emphasize the crease of the eyelid with purple or pink shadows. Apply a gray shade to the moving eyelid. And do not forget to paint over the space between the eyelashes with a black eyeliner.

© Makeup.ru

The final touch is shining shadows in the inner corner of the eye.

© Makeup.ru

You can focus on unusual textures. Metallic eye makeup will look great on stage.

© Makeup.ru

How to use products with this texture, we told in this video tutorial.

Don't be afraid to experiment with shimmery textures. An arrow made of loose glitter will effectively sparkle in the beams of spotlights and under camera flashes. Use for example Face & Body Glitter or eyeliner Glitter Goals by NYX Professional Makeup.

© Makeup.ru

To prevent the glitter from staining the skin of the lower eyelids during application, cover the “danger zone” with a cotton pad folded in half. The finished image can be supplemented with large rhinestones at the temples.

An interesting dance make-up for a brunette

A dark shade of hair is a noticeable accent in itself. Therefore, it is important that the face does not look faded against its background. Gypsy makeup will help. Darken the crease of the eyelid with a dark brown shade. Apply beige shadows with a shimmer on the moving eyelid and thickly paint over the mucous eyelids with a gel pencil. Then draw a wide arrow and blend it starting from the middle of the eyelid. Makeup can be complemented with a berry-colored lipstick or leave the lips neutral using a nude pencil.

Brown-eyed brunettes who want to add color to their makeup are not forbidden to make a bright contrasting accent in their eye makeup.

Urban Decay Glide-on 24/7 in Sabbath will make makeup brighter and provide a beautiful contrast with eye color.

Brightness and durability are the two main characteristics of stage make-up. We will talk about the nuances of creating such a make-up

  • How to do stage make-up: step by step instructions
  • Overview of suitable cosmetics

Everyday make-up is not suitable for the stage: for the audience, the artist in this case will be faceless in the truest sense of the word. That's why actors wear makeup. They do this with the help of very bright and persistent cosmetics according to special rules. After all, the result should not fail, no matter what the stage actions. We will talk about the tricks of such makeup in this material.

Bright stage makeup for dancers

Different artists have different stage makeup. Dancers, for example, need to consider the intensity of movement. They should not interfere with any elements of makeup or hairstyles. Therefore, the hair is most often removed from the face and fixed as securely as possible.

  • As for make-up, it should take into account not only the heat of the spotlights, which "melts" cosmetics, but also the activity of perspiration, which also destroys make-up. In general, make-up requires accents that will be visible from afar.

© GettyImages

  • Professional cosmetics are most often used in dressing rooms. Choose reliable products in catchy shades. If you're looking for long-lasting stage makeup, look for water-resistant labels on product packages.
  • Don't forget to prepare your skin for makeup. You will need not only the usual base, which should be distributed over the entire face, but also primers for local application - for example, for the eyelids. If you neglect this stage, after a few minutes the arrows will turn into dark smudges on the stage, and the shadows will roll into the creases of the eyelids.
  • Give preference to graphic make-up. The arrows, the underlined shape of the eyebrows, the matte lipstick applied clearly along the contour of the lips, the bright sculpting - the more clarity, the better. From the audience, smoky eyes will seem more like a dirty spot than make-up that gives expression to the eyes.

for oriental dances

© GettyImages

There are some nuances of the image here. The neckline, hips, stomach in such dances are in the spotlight, so cosmetics will also have to be applied to the body. The approach may vary.

  • Some people use oils with a slight shimmer some time before the performance, so that the skin acquires not only a golden glow, but also a “wet” sheen.
  • Others use a fluffy brush to apply loose glitter to desired areas of the body.
  • Another option: guided by the principles of strobing, highlight the collarbones, shoulders, hips in those places where the bone “protrudes”. A spectacular result can be achieved using a regular highlighter - both powder and liquid.

© GettyImages

Focus on the make-up of the face, as it is customary to do in Eastern countries: with an emphasis not only on the eyes (black eyeliner and black mascara for extreme volume will help you), but also on the lips. Remember, this is stage makeup, and the one-accent rule doesn't work here. For the same reason, glitter and rhinestones are welcome.

for a fitness bikini

The main point of stage make-up for those who go in for a fitness bikini is the tanning effect. Therefore, before the competition, when you need to go on stage in front of the judges, the athletes visit the solarium. And they also have a special make-up in their arsenal, which helps to give the skin a caramel tint. Body butter allows you to create an attractive glow. Knowing that “dark-skinned” contestants look more advantageous, the girls add darker foundation and powder to their makeup bag.

© GettyImages

Even though the fitness bikini is all about the figure and muscle relief, stage make-up is still customary. Most often, this is contouring, sharp and quite aggressive, with an emphasis on the sculptural outlines of the cheekbones, plus smoky eyes in dark shades and scarlet lipstick on the lips. However, there are no strict rules regarding how to do stage make-up for a fitness bikini. Therefore, the standard version is changed to your taste.

How to do stage make-up step by step

© GettyImages

1

Start with preparation. Apply moisturizer and then primer. Separately distribute a special base (for example, Eyeshadow Primer Potion from Urban Decay) over the eyelids.

2

Choose a heavy foundation. It can be either a special greasy-based make-up, or just a cream with increased durability. Use the technique of stipling (“driving in”) when applying - this way the tone will last longer.

3

Correct using the sculpting kit. Create an emphasis on the cheekbones with a gray-brown color - in stage make-up, the diagonal of the sculptor powder under the cheekbone does not require thorough shading, as in an everyday make-up. Then the result will be visible from the stage. Do not forget about highlighting - highlights on the cheekbones in festive and stage make-up are only welcome.

4

Highlight the eyebrows. In stage make-up, the contour should be outlined as clearly as possible. When correcting the shape of the eyebrows with color, work with a lot of pressure on a beveled brush or pencil.

5

Blend the darker one at the outer corners of the eyes, darken the crease with it - this is necessary so that the makeup does not seem “flat”. Then draw a black arrow - wider and longer, so that the "tail" stretches to the temple. It would also be nice to paint over the inner contour with a kayal.

6

Eyelashes - a separate item. Glue a strip of overlays (or at least bunches at the outer edges). If you decide to do without artificial ones, apply a lengthening primer to your eyelashes (by the way, it can be replaced with eyebrow gel) and mascara - in two layers.

7

Outline the lips with a pencil, then use it to fill them all over. Then apply a long-lasting matte lipstick. It is better to choose a product not in a stick, but with a liquid texture.

8

Set makeup with translucent powder and setting spray.
