A couple years ago when I had 2 girls in dance classes, keeping up with all the dance uniforms, costumes, tights, and shoes just about broke the bank! Have you seen how much dance shorts cost? If you are a dance mom, I know you have. It’s unbelievable, considering that they require only a tiny bit fabric. So I decided to deconstruct a pair and make my own pattern.

This blog post has been converted to an optional PDF that’s optimized for printing. Find it here. The free Girls Dance Shorts Pattern in sizes 2-12 is included in the blog post below and is totally free to read, print, and sew! Just hit CTRL +P on your computer to print. A new thread that makes sewing them easier than ever! I was asked to test the new Eloflex thread from Coats. In the past, sewing with knit fabrics required special techniques, stitches, or machines (like a serger or coverstitch) to ensure that your seams could stretch with the fabric. But the Eloflex thread stretches just a tiny bit – enough so that you can sew using a regular stitch on a regular sewing machine – it’s revolutionary!

I tested it out on lots of dance shorts for my girl and Eloflex thread really does stretch and not pop! You can put it in both the top of your machine (the needle) and the bobbin.

I found Eloflex stretch thread for sale on Amazon if you want to try it.

Are you ready to bust out your sewing machine and make magic? Let’s sew some dance shorts!

The main part of these dance shorts can be made with any light to mid-weight knit fabric that has 2- or 4-way stretch. The waistband must be made with dance or swimsuit material that contains spandex. This will keep the shorts on her little booty.

Sizes include 2T, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12.

You will need:

Cutting out the dance shorts:

1. Cut 2 from the Jazz Shorts sewing pattern (oops – I changed the name). Make sure the two pieces are mirror images of each other.

2. Cut a waistband piece as specified in the chart above.

Sewing the Dance Shorts:

Use a 1/2” seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

1. Fold each leg piece in half right sides together, matching the short inseam. Stitch. Press or finger-press the seam open.

2. Hem each leg. I have included 3/4” hem allowance in the dance short pattern, so you can fold it up 3/4” and then tuck the raw edge under. Stitch close to the fold – no stretching necessary with the Eloflex stretchable thread.

If your fabric is acting fussy, there’s no real need to tuck the raw edge under. Knit fabric does not fray so it’s totally a matter of preference.

3. Place the hemmed leg pieces right sides together, matching up the front and back edges and the inseams. Pin and stitch around the U-shaped seam from the top front edge to the top back edge.

Don’t they look cute so far?

Make the dance shorts waistband:

1. Fold the waistband in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Make a mark 3” from the corner on the raw edge. Cut from the corner of the folded edge across to the mark. The strip is folded, so you will be cutting away 2 triangles.

Repeat on the opposite end of the waistband piece.

2. Place pins at the top corners to hold the folded waistband together.

The next step is to divide the waistband into quarters between the pins. You could measure and do the math, but here is my easy method:

Fold the waistband in half, matching the two pins to find the center. Place a pin at the center.

Now place one of the side pins on top of the middle pin. The new fold is half way in between the two – place a pin there.

Repeat on the other side and you’ll now have 5 equally spaced pins.

3. Divide the shorts into quarters. Simply mark (or remember) the front and back seams, then add pins at the sides.

4. Place the shorts on top of the waistband, matching the back seam and the middle pin in the waistband.

Pin the waistband to the shorts at the back seam.

5. Pin the waist band to the shorts at 3 of the quarter marks as seen above. Leave the end of the waistband on your left open as seen above. It will overlap and be sewn last.

Note: The waistband is slightly smaller than the shorts. This is so that it will hold the shorts up!

6. Pin the angled end of the waistband against the raw edge of the shorts as seen above right. It does not need to stretch.

Start sewing the waistband to the dance shorts at the corner and sew until you get to the first pin.

Once you reach the pin at the center front, remove it and grasp the shorts and waistband over the pin at the side edge. Stretch these fabrics toward you until they are the same length (remember – the waistband is a little bit shorter). Sew until you reach the pin.

Continue stretching and sewing from pin to pin around the dance shorts.

The last pin at the open end of the waistband should also match with the center front seam. Place the two waistband corners together and stretch and sew until you reach the center.

Align the cut edge with the top raw edge of the dance shorts and sew across. This edge does not need to be stretched.

This is what the sewn waistband should look like.

Fold up the waistband and you’re done!

DIY Dancer Shorts - SPARKLY BELLY

by Mao on  in DIY Belly Dance Costume Blog, Uncategorized • 0 Comments

Since I launched my latest costume making course, Aurora Convertible Skirt Premium Course, I received questions about what to wear under this type of skirt that has cutouts.

Click the image to check out how to make this skirt!

Generally, you can either wear nude colour underwear that doesn’t show, or some dancers wear boy shorts in nude colour. For dance skirts that have big slits, for example, it may be better to wear shorts in the colour of the skirt in case they show.

So today I’ll share with you how you can make your own boy shorts to wear under your dance skirts or even to wear on their own for practice! Let’s get started.

DIY Dancer Shorts

To make DIY Dancer Shorts, you need:

Stretch fabric – I recommend 4 way stretch fabric. If you are going to wear the shorts on their own, go for heavier weight stretch fabric. Have about 1/2m (1/2yd) ready.

Matching colour thread

Your favourite leggings – don’t worry, you won’t be cutting these apart. (If you don’t have favorite leggings or want to make your own shorts pattern, check out here!)

Regular sewing tools

First, turn one side of your leggings inside out, and put the other leg inside it. This way you can see the seams clearly.

On a flat surface, place your stretch fabric and fold it in half, right sides together. If your fabric stretches one way more than the other way, the stretchier way should be perpendicular to the fold.

Place your leggings on the fabric. You’ll notice that the crotch part doesn’t align, and it’s okay. This is because the back side is deeper than the front side.

Simply trace the side of the leggings that’s facing the fabric. From the crotch, trace just 10cm (4in) down.

Then add a 1/2in (1cm) seam allowance to the sides. Don’t worry about the top and bottom edge.

Next, flip the leggings over at  the fold of the leggings. Align the top edge, and continue to trace the side that’s facing the fabric, up to 10cm (4in) down from the crotch.

Add 1/2in (1cm) seam allowance to the sides.

Connect the bottom points.

Cut along the lines, and you have 2 panels ready.

Take one panel and fold it right sides together, and sew the inseam, which is from the crotch to the bottom edge. Use your favourite stretch stitch like a zigzag stitch.

Do the same for the other panel.

Turn one of them inside out, and place it in the other side. The right sides should face each other, and match up the crotch section.

And simply do a stretch stitch along the curve with a 1/2in (1cm) seam allowance.

Now turn it inside out, and try it on. Most leggings are made high-waisted, so fold the top edge in as low as you’d like. Place pins at the front, back and sides.

Same with the legs. Fold in as much as you’d like.

Take off the shorts, and for the waistband, simply do a stretch stitch at 1in (2.5cm) seam allowance or if you fold is smaller, use a smaller seam allowance to secure the fold in place. I don’t like to add elastic here, because it makes it tighter and causes a muffin top, and since we’re using stretch fabric, it should hold up. But if you feel you shorts won’t hold up without it, feel free to add elastic. Then trim the excess fabric close to the stitches.

Same thing for the legs. Do a stretch stitch at 1/2in (1cm) seam allowance to secure the fold, and trim the excess fabric. Or, if you use heavier weight stretch fabric, you can leave the edges raw like this. It won’t fray, and if your fabric is heavy enough so the raw edges don’t curl, keeping the edges unfinished actually helps prevent the lines from showing up when you put on your skirt.

And your shorts are finished! Make them in different fabrics and have fun! You can also attach skirt to the shorts to create the modern look and it can help your skirt from sliding as well.

no one dances with their elbows how to make twerk shorts

If even people who are far from it like a turtle from striptease argue about some phenomenon - for example, about twerking, then this phenomenon is really popular. Twerking, bursting into dance floors, screens, and now into fitness clubs with his characteristic expression, is expanding the army of his fans every day - and, of course, not by chance.

    What is twerking?

Initially, twerking (aka twerk, aka booty dance, aka booty shake and swag) is a dance trend that originated in the United States in the late 1999s under the influence of African folk dances based on movements of the buttocks. After 2003, it began to spread actively, and in the early 2010s it gained almost worldwide fame, after which it quickly moved from the category of dances requiring good physical fitness to the category of a separate type of fitness training.

How is twerking different from other areas of fitness?

Twerking puts in the center of exercises those parts of the body that are given much less attention in other directions, and especially the buttocks and lower back, while during training there is an intensive work of all the muscles of the body.

Why is it so popular, or 5 advantages of twerking fitness

The first advantage of twerking, in general, is not unique: like other areas of fitness, it allows you to improve your figure and drive off unnecessary fat. But by tightening the hips, flattening the belly, improving the lines of the legs, etc., twerking at the same time forms excellent bulging buttocks from the most modest source material.

The second plus is related to the general health effect. And again, twerking is original and banal at the same time. Being essentially a variant of cardio loads, it strengthens the corset of muscles, has an excellent effect on the heart and blood vessels, increases joint flexibility and promotes blood oxygen saturation - like many other types of physical exercises. But only twerking is able to “massage” the internal organs associated with digestion (gastrointestinal tract) and childbearing. Getting rid of menstrual pain, constipation, bile stasis and many other things that spoil our lives is also twerking.

The third plus is a significant increase in the level of psychological comfort. With twerking, life takes on new colors, because this direction in fitness provides excellent opportunities for self-expression. It's not just about burning sexuality: twerking gives you the opportunity to try on a variety of images - from a relaxed and unflappable athlete, perfectly in control of her body, to a hot little thing that can lead anyone astray from the path of the righteous. But no matter what images you try on, an increase in female self-esteem (and at the same time libido) is guaranteed.

The fourth plus is, let's say, undemanding to external conditions. Twerking doesn't require fancy equipment or special facilities, and you don't need anything at all, except for suitable clothes, music and a large mirror.

    Worth noting:

The best clothes for twerking are the ones that show the buttocks: leggings and mini-shorts. Shoes - only sneakers (to avoid injury).
And the fifth plus: twerking suits everyone. Well, almost everyone.

    Who can twerk?

Contrary to popular and erroneous belief, twerking doesn't require a big butt or a curvaceous figure: those with the thinnest physiques can excel at it. There are no age restrictions for him, and no gender restrictions either: twerking is quite suitable for the stronger sex. As for physical training, it is desirable, although not required.

    Important to know:

Persons with spinal and musculoskeletal disorders in general should practice twerking with great care, and at the slightest hint of pain, immediately stop training.

    How do you do twerking?

The first stage is the inevitable and necessary warm-up, followed by basic training and stretching for 35-50 minutes. The basic training (“booty”) includes a set of exercises performed in positions: 1) standing; 2) hands on the floor; 3) on the wall.

The first includes squats (the most impressive option is squatting up to 5 minutes), vibration of the buttocks, rotation of the hips and lower back, alternate movement of the buttocks, drawing the "eight", etc. In the “hands on the floor” position, it is necessary, leaning on the floor, to quickly bend and straighten your knees, intensively moving your pelvis. To perform exercises on the wall, they stand near it and, leaning on the floor with their hands, put their legs bent at the knees for a moment on the wall. One way or another, you will have to move the back of the body a lot.

At the stage of stretching, muscles are relaxed with the help of tilts on straight legs, twine and other exercises.

Training is always accompanied by rhythmic dance music. For 45-60 minutes of training, it takes from 400-500 (for beginners) to a thousand calories (for experienced twerkers). To move to the last category, it is recommended to practice at least 2 times a week.

    Important to know:

All movements in twerking are done with legs apart.

    Learning to twerk: video tutorials

Where is the best place to practice?

To the question "How to learn to twerk?" there are two answers: on your own or with an instructor in the gym.

Twerking on your own free of charge at home has its advantages, and above all absolute freedom in choosing the time for training. You can practice at any time by turning on the twerking video lesson and repeating each movement as many times as necessary to consolidate it. No one will look with a critical eye, no one will pay attention to the floating make-up or inept movements - but no one will tell you where your mistake is and why you are moving forward so slowly. In addition, not everyone has a full-length mirror at home and, most importantly, a large enough space in front of it.

Classes in the gym are already good because they will quickly show you and explain everything that you would have to reach for a long time and tediously on your own. With all the apparent simplicity of twerking movements, they have enough of their subtleties, which are better to understand with the help of a trainer. And since the atmosphere plays a significant role in the enjoyment of twerking, no exercise alone compares to the collective rhythmic ecstasy, not to mention that nothing helps to evaluate your achievements more than comparing with others.

Let's try to summarize with three questions and answers.

“Is twerking necessary?” - Yes, if you want to try a new version of cardio, improve everything below the belt and achieve an amazing backside.
"Will it suit me?" - Yes, if there are no severe diseases of the spine and joints.
"On my own or at the gym?" - If you want a quick result - in the gym.

    More interesting

Twerk can be done, both just for yourself (to tighten your legs and have a useful skill), and for the sake of your lover or applicant for this position (men are very partial to girls with special talents). Those who know how to “twerk” are definitely “in trend” now, since the dance is on the wave of popularity and is on everyone’s lips. Before you go to a club and show off your skills, make sure you have the appropriate twerk dance attire.

    Leggings, jeggings and leggings

For beginners of twerk, leggings made of thin material are suitable, which perfectly convey the anatomical features of the legs and buttocks. Such clothes hide the excess from the eyes and demonstrate everything you need during the performance of twerk. The most relevant leggings are white or made of thin knitwear, which is “slightly translucent”. Girls who are prone to outrageous can choose a color to match their skin tone. In Chinese online stores, there are even pants on which a pattern imitating bare female legs is applied (something similar could be seen in the clips of the Nikita group).

Jeggings are a more conservative type of twerk clothing. In structure, these are the same leggings, but more dense and printed on them, imitating denim. These tight-fitting pants look almost exactly like jeans, but do not hinder movement at all (you can sit in them on both longitudinal and transverse twine). Jeggings are devoid of fasteners, belts, zippers, rivets and other accessories, so during the dance you definitely won’t get hurt due to accident.

Leggings are the same leggings, although in our country they are sometimes divided into separate classes according to materials. Coated leggings are good for twerk. The fabric is treated with a special composition, as a result of which leather or metallic pants can be worn like tights and look great on the legs. It is interesting to look leggings "under the brocade" and with the effect of varnishing, they add roundness to the pope, due to the shine of the material.

    Shorts

Shorts are now called anything, even what looks more like swimming trunks. But that's not the point. Most twerkers prefer short shorts to show off their skills. To make them look almost decent, first they put on nylon tights for an amateur (flesh, black, colored, fishnet, in a small and large mesh). Shorts are worn over and then they do not move out and do not huddle in the space between the buttocks. With such a degree of nakedness, you can afford high leggings or stockings of any color and quality.

Denim shorts should have very high cutouts for the legs, so that you can see what, where and how it shakes, as well as so that the denim does not hinder movement.

    Bodysuit

It seems to some that shorts do not open up enough space for creativity, so bodysuits are used for demonstration dances. Such clothes can be seen in one of the most replicated pictures of Miley Cyrus's twerk, where she is wearing a gray shaggy swimsuit, with bodily inserts and an animal muzzle on her stomach. If you are not going to sew a bodysuit for twerk to order, then you can pay attention to "dance swimsuits", though you still have to come up with something to finish such clothes.

    T-shirts, tops and bustiers

If you choose shorts or leggings for your outfit, you will need a matching top. The simplest thing you can think of is a solid-colored wrestling T-shirt that fits snugly to the body (after all, you have to bend down all the time, clothes should not sag or roll). Owners of beautiful tummies can afford a short top. The most practical and fashionable option for the top of a twerk suit is a bustier top. The advantage of such a top is that it looks quite frank, but not like underwear and fits well to the body, fixing everything you need, where you need it.

Twerk is the most fashionable modern type of dance. This direction is so popular for modern fashionistas, because during training not only elasticity, plasticity and rhythm are worked out, but the body is also tightened and muscles are trained. Today, twerk is done both for the soul and professionally. But in any case, this dance requires a certain wardrobe. And if the top can be almost anything, then the bottom of the clothes are special shorts for twerk. Such models are distinguished by a tight-fitting cut of a very short length. A similar feature is needed to demonstrate skills, as well as convenience when practicing movements. To date, designers offer two of the most popular types of twerk shorts:

    What are twerk shorts called?

Twerk shorts have no specific name. Some call them panties, some swim trunks, some mini-shorts. But when buying, you should always focus the seller’s attention that you need clothes specifically for twerking. Modern models often come with. This combination is due to the fact that if you wear shorts over nylon accessories, then the whole image will look decent, and not vulgar.

How obscene antics became the mainstream dance of 2013

    1. Juicy J recently tweeted that he was willing to pay a $50,000 scholarship to the student (or applicant) who sends him the best twerk. And then he deleted the post. It's a pity. “Shake your ass on higher education” would be a pretty pretty story.

    2. Urban Dictionary knows everything. If you ask its users about twerk, they will explain to you what it is: 1) a white chick in yoga pants fucks with air; or 2) a black chick in two sizes too small is fucking a wall. You already understood that twerk is not dancing with elbows. This is dancing with the buttocks.

    3. In the third paragraph, we tell in such detail where the dance came from, why it was called that, which rapper from which city did what, and you are like: “Yeah, very interesting” - and rewind the page down. Or type in YouTube "how to twerk". Bye-ah!

    4. Black people have been twerking for 20 years, but only in 2013 did the disease become so contagious.
