Mashups are routines that consist of choreography from both previous Just Dance titles and those from the current game integrated into a single routine, first appeared in Just Dance 3. Until its latest appearance in Just Dance 2017, the feature underwent a lot of updates. Mashups were planned to be in Just Dance 2018 but were removed for unknown reasons. [citation needed] Mashups have not returned since.

Description

This section needs to be updated for relevance. You can help by adding updated information.
Dance Mashups are routines that consist of dancers from previous Just Dance titles and the current game is all joined into one single routine, but not every dancer. There are two types of Mashups: regular and sweat. The original dancer from the song usually appears at the beginning and end of the routine, sometimes even during the middle of the song, if the song is Solo. Before Just Dance 2015, if the Classic routine was a Duet or Dance Crew, a random Solo dancer takes the Duets/Dance Crew’s place; or sometimes nothing replaced the dancers. This was changed in Just Dance 2015, with the reintroduction of Duet Mashups, which were only in Just Dance 3 before, and the introduction of Dance Crew Mashups. Also, Just Dance 2015 introduced themed Mashups, in which the dancer selection would be determined by a specific category, such as Pink Hair. In Just Dance 2016, some mashups exclusive for 8-gen consoles and Wii only. Also, on 8-gen consoles, there are Mashups with no theme that can be unlocked depending on which month it is unlockable for. Additionally, Sweat Mashups are absent from Just Dance 2016. Mashups return one last time in Just Dance 2017. However, only Solo and Duet Mashups are available. They are only exclusive to 8th-gen consoles, PC, and Wii. Also, Sweat Mashups return.

Just Dance 3

Just Dance 3 is the first game to have this mode. Here, there are three kinds of Mashups: Mashup, Duet Mashup and Sweat Mashup. Mashups and Duet Mashups have a kaleidoscopic background that can have different shapes and colors. Sweat Mashups have a gym as a background.

Songs with Mashups in this game are:

  • Apache (Jump On It)
  • Are You Gonna Go My Way (Sweat Mashup)
  • Baby One More Time

Just Dance 4

Just Dance 4 is the second game to have this mode. Sweat Mashups and Duet Mashups were removed. The background is now a place with lots of lights and smoke. There are Wii U and PS3 exclusive Mashups. Another similar mode has been added, called Puppet Master Mode, where players use the Wii U gamepad to choose dancers in real time, similar to a Mashup. None of the Mashups in Just Dance 4 have Gold Moves.

Just Dance 2014

The background for all Mashups in Just Dance 2014 is very bright. There are dancers from previous games in the background and the center of the "wheel" is a dome that represents half disco ball. The ground is full of slots where the current dancer dances on. Gold Moves have returned but only on certain Mashups. Sweat Mashups also returned for a few routines after being absent in Just Dance 4.

Just Dance 2014 would only allow a small variety of dancers in the Mashups.

The Mashups in this game are:

  • #thatPOWER (Unlocked from start)
  • Blame It on the Boogie (Sweat Mashup)

Just Dance 2015

Mashups and Party Master Modes re-appear once again in Just Dance 2015. Duet Mashups make their reappearance after being dormant for 2 games. The Party Master background returns from Just Dance 2014 and the Mashup background returns from Just Dance 3. A single Dance Crew Mashup (marked as a Quatro Mashup) appears as the Classic routine for You’re On My Mind. All Mashups have a theme now, so they use a small variety of dancers. Monthly Unlockable Mashups appear too, but they're invisible until they get unlocked. The background now has shadows on its corners and the color of the background is also different every time a Mashup is played. This is not the case for You’re On My Mind, in which the background color changes every transition. This feature would later be in every Just Dance 2016 and 2017 Mashup.

Songs with Mashups in this game are:

  • 4x4 (Best of JD4)

Mashups and Party Master Modes re-appear once again in this game. Duet Mashups appear again along with Dance Crew Mashups and Trio Mashups make their appearance too. The Party Master background returns from Just Dance 2015 and the Mashup background returns from Just Dance 2015. The shadows were slightly removed too. However, the color changes from one dancer to another, a concept used in You’re On My Mind. Monthly Mashups re-appear (though they do not have to be unlocked) and there are Xbox One, PS4, and Wii/Wii U exclusive Mashups, too.

Songs with Mashups in this game are:

  • Born This Way (Triplets) (Trio Mashup)

Only Solo and Duet Mashups re-appear in this game, but the Party Master Mode has been removed. The Mashup background is the same as the previous game. On eighth-generation consoles and PC, the Mashups are playable via Just Dance Unlimited, meaning that an internet connection is required to play the Mashups except Scream & Shout’s. On Wii, the Mashups are unlockable for 20 Mojo Coins, similar to the last two games. Mashups are not available on the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3.

The Mashups available in this game are:

Trivia

General

  • Party Rock Anthem and Apache (Jump On It) both have the most appearances in Mashups, with 21.
    • However, this is only the case for Apache (Jump On It) if the unused Mashups the coach appears in are counted; otherwise, he appears in 19 Mashups.
  • Crazy Christmas is the only coach to appear in at least one Mashup in every Just Dance game since Just Dance 3.
  • Da Funk (Sweat Mashup) is the only Mashup in the series that does not repeat any dancers, except for starting and ending with the same dancer.
    • Besides, Da Funk (Sweat Mashup) and You’re On My Mind are the only two Mashups where no moves are repeated.
  • Baby Zouk’s Mashup has the least number of routines, with only four being featured.
    • All post-Just Dance 3 Mashups except Lean On’s feature at least six routines.
  • Just A Gigolo (Mashup) has the highest number of unique dancers, with 22.
  • Just Dance 2016 is the only game where no Mashup features an unused coach.
  • In Just Dance 2014 and Just Dance 2015 Mashups are pieced together in-game, with each dancer being its own video in the game files rather than the Mashup being one long video of all the dancers, with the exception of You’re On My Mind. All other games in the series use one long video.
  • Due to the shutdown of the Just Dance 2014 and Just Dance 2015 servers for all consoles, monthly Mashups for both games are no longer available to unlock, with the exception of the Wii version.
    • However, monthly Mashups that have already been unlocked remain playable.
  • In Just Dance 2015, the score screens for Mashups show the album coach for the Classic routine of the respective song (for example, on the score screen for the Mashup of Papaoutai, the Classic album coach appears). On Just Dance 2016 and Just Dance 2017 for 7th-generation consoles, instead, the Mashup album coach from the 8th-generation versions of the games is shown instead.
  • In December 2016, the Mashup sections from Just Dance 2016 and Just Dance 2017 were removed for the Xbox One, Wii U, PS4, and PC. Mashups from Just Dance 2017 are still accessible through the "Favorites" section. They were added back to the menu at a later point.
  • In the Wii version of Just Dance 2016 and Just Dance 2017, the background may glitch: when this happens, the moving hexagons at the sides have a rounded effect, as if the screen was seen from a sphere.

Just Dance 4
  • Just Dance 4’s Mashup background was also used for the Extreme routines of Good Feeling and Run the Show, as well as in Puppet Master Mode.
    • However, Puppet Master mode applies different animations and light effects, and the coaches’ reflections are not kaleidoscopic.
      • Good Feeling and Run the Shows’ Extreme Versions also use the original background in a slightly dissimilar way.
  • In Mashups, the dancers’ reflections sometimes exceed the boundaries.
    • This is not the case with the Xbox 360 version of the game, where coaches are not reflected on the background.

Just Dance 2014
  • Mashups in Just Dance 2014 only use the following coaches:
    • #thatPOWER (Extreme)

Just Dance 2015
  • Due to a glitch, some Monthly Mashups may have to be unlocked at a cost of 20 Mojo Coins, which is the cost of a Mojo Coin-unlockable Mashup. [citation needed]
    • In addition, by accessing the Mashup via the JD Wall, the game will freeze after a few minutes.
  • The background of Mashups was supposed to change color each time a different dancer appears. However, this could not happen due to technical limitations, and this only happened on You’re On My Mind.
    • Despite this, the background color will change each time a Mashup is being replayed.
  • On the Wii version of the game, after playing a Mashup, the screen will flash light blue for a split second before switching to the scoring screen.[citation needed]
    • This is due to the game unloading the background, as the game will always place a blue screen behind routines.
  • Some Mashups have a bug with the Gold Moves, where the sound effect that plays before performing the move is delayed, but not the one that sounds after performing it. As a result, both sounds are played at the same time. [1][2][3][4]
    • However, only the visual effect for the latter can be seen.

Just Dance 2016
  • Starting with Just Dance 2016, Mashups no longer began and/or ended with the original dancer, even if he or she fit the theme.

Just Dance 2017
  • In Just Dance 2017, Mashups are only available on the 8th-Gen consoles, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Wii. Xbox 360 and PS3 have no Mashups available.

Just Dance 2018
  • Some unused background textures can be found in the Just Dance 2018 files.

Just Dance 4 is the second game to have this mode. Sweat Mashups and Duet Mashups were removed. The background is now a place with lots of lights and smoke. There are Wii U and PS3 exclusive Mashups.

  • Blurred Lines

  • Ain’t No Mountain High Enough (Funky) (December Mashup)
  • Addicted To You (Black Light) (November Mashup)

Only Solo and Duet Mashups re-appear in this game, but the Party Master Mode has been removed. The Mashup background is the same as the previous game. On eighth-generation consoles and PC, the Mashups are playable via Just Dance Unlimited, meaning that an internet connection is required to play the Mashups except Scream & Shout’s. On Wii, the Mashups are unlockable for 20 Mojo Coins, similar to the last two games. Mashups are not available on the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3.

The Mashups available in this game are:

  • Cheap Thrills (Sunglasses)
  • DADDY (K-Pop)
  • Ghost In The Keys (Swag)
  • Hips Don’t Lie (Caliente)
  • Lean On (World)
  • RADICAL (Back in the days)

Trivia

  • The background used in-game features coaches from past Just Dance games as holograms that come in from the left to change dancers. They always appear in this same order (from left to right):
    • Step by Step (visible at the beginning)
    • I Will Survive (visible at the beginning)

How a microtrend helps artists and rebuilds music

How a microtrend helps artists and reassembles music anew.

January 28, 2021 Music Article

During the pandemic, tiktok has become a safe fun place for many — it has given them an opportunity to get distracted and show their creativity. Someone beat bearded memes , someone launched dance flash mobs, and someone did outright game like commercials with an “epileptic” seizure and experiments with beans .

There are a lot of big trends on tiktok, but the coolest thing is to follow the very tiny ones. One of the most interesting is music mashups . Let's analyze what they consist of, why artists need them and how they prove that music is finite.

Essence of mashups

A musical mashup is when the songs of two artists are combined in one track. One of the best examples in show business is "joint" track Billie Eilish and Slipknot.

Tiktok music mashups are different. They are built according to the principle “ song by artist A performed by artist B”. At the same time, the track should be mega-popular among teenagers, and the artist in whose style we play should be from the old classics.

To make such a track, you need at least basic musical skills : hearing, voice and ability to play instruments. Maximum - acting ability to "remove" the behavior of the musicians, their signature "chips" like a recognizable drum fill or guitar chords.

The leaders of this mini-trend are Ethan Fields and Max Frost from the USA. Both are musicians. The first is amateur and still studying at Oxford, the second is a professional with a solo album and a joint tour with Twenty One Pilots and Awolnation. Ethan and Max make videos separately from each other, but in essence it turns out very similar.

The guys did not bet on tiktok, but it was he who brought them wide popularity. Fields now has almost 400 thousand subscribers, Frost has 200 thousand. For millionaires, this is a drop in the ocean, and for microtrend setters, it is excellent indicators.

There are several explanations for the popularity of Fields and Frost mashups:

#1. Strong images. On camera, Fields is a quirky but hilarious indie boy with a manic love for the Helvetica typeface, which he uses to design titles in all his videos. Frost is a self-confident handsome man who perfectly parodies voices. These characters are fun to watch.

#2. Content you are viewing. When you see the seed title "Cardi B - WAP by The Killers", it becomes terribly interesting how these two incompatible genres were brought together in one song. Interest rests not only on an intriguing title, but also on how the video was filmed and edited - in short frames, dynamically. Here you can always experiment - the main thing is that the techniques are not only recognizable, but also keep the user.

#3. Non-empty fan. Fields and Frost's video is not useless entertainment, like a 15-second skit based on a joke from the Scanword Fair. The guys invest in filming/editing the video and the creation of the tracks itself - the selection of instruments, recording, mixing, mastering. In general, they make videos in which a huge amount of work is felt behind every second of timing.

Why and who needs mashups

The trend of music mashups has benefits both for the musicians themselves and for the audience.

At one time, the 2000’s music challenge trend was popular on Tiktok. The teenagers were turned on the songs that thundered in the 2000s and were asked to say whether they knew these tracks or not. Mashups are a continuation of this trend, they also expand the musical horizons of zoomers and alpha.

Take the same track "Сardi B - WAP performed by The Killers". If Cardi B is guessed 99% of the time, then the name The Killers will say nothing to most. And through mashup videos, teenagers will know that there is one group whose song stayed in the UK chart record 240 weeks .

For musicians, mashups mean even more. This format helps:

#1. Break down the genre into its components. To copy the artist's approach, you need to think like him: listen to the discography and notice the characteristic features - something like a bass guitar with overdrive from Tame Impala, a Roland TR-808 drum machine from Post Malone, or auto-tuned vocals like a rapper Travis Scott.

#2. Sharpen the execution. To understand all the moves is one thing, another is to play these moves. To repeat them, you need to know not only the notes, but the artist's tools and understand how it is used, that's right specifically.

#3. Take matters into your own hands. A good number of musicians plan their own tours, enforce copyrights, and eventually release the music. Learning how to shoot and edit content for TikTok in such a way that it engages is a small but important step. This will all come in handy later.

#4. Promote your product. Both Fields and Frost create their own music. Fan videos on tiktok help them to pull the audience towards them, and then hint to them that they can listen to something else besides jokes.

In fact, the first three points above - parse the genre, hone the sound, shoot everything - is the recipe for creating tiktok music mashups. But still, this is just a sequence of actions when there is already an idea - but it still needs to be found and worked out. To create such a video, you need to catch minimum match between the two artists you choose for the mashup and " rope " for their tie. Add patience here when recording and editing the mashup - and that's it, you are a tiktok star. May be.

That's it, the music is looping. Or not. Or yes. Or not.

In his book Retromania, music critic and journalist Simon Reynolds says that culture repeats itself in circles, and sooner or later what once was fashionable will become fashionable again. The maniacal love of modern pop music for the 80s is confirmation that this is so. The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus or the Belarusian post-punk group Silent at Home openly, but skillfully exploit the patterns of that period.

There is an idea that there are only seven notes - and nothing new can be invented. Holy truth. From this point of view, originality has ended a long time ago. But from the point of view of how to arrange these seven notes, no. Such "Michurin" crossing of artists can even be considered a new product of postmodernism.

Musical mashups in tiktok - an ouroboros that does not bite its own tail, but eats itself, but with pleasure. When it finishes, music will be reborn for pop culture in a different form, but with approximately the same content. So the phrase “somewhere I have already heard this” is far from being hidden.

"You have to be a musician and have a sense of humor to make mashups" - SAMESOUND

Have you ever hummed the lyrics of one song to the tune of another? Have you noticed strong similarities between two different compositions, such that the songs can easily be combined? Have you seen videos on YouTube where two different tracks are glued into one?

The mash-up genre (from English Mash-Up - mix, crush, beat) combines several pieces of music into one. The idea is to overdub original vocal or instrument parts from one song over similar parts in another. Often, the result of the combination is a completely new, original song, albeit assembled like a patchwork of pieces of other tracks.

The most popular form of mashup is DJ remixes. DJs use vocal samples and instrumental parts of famous songs in their music, creating popular remixes. Much the same thing is done by many hip-hop artists, whose music also often becomes a cut of elements from different tracks.

The development of computer technology and music software has led to the separation of the mashup as a separate genre of music. Within the genre, the style of the tracks varies greatly: the authors create both dance and rock compositions, as well as jazz and blues tracks.

One of the most prominent figures in the mash-up scene is Piotr Gorst. Peter's videos have gained great popularity on YouTube: videos in which Slayer team up with Igor Kornelyuk, and System Of A Down with Yaroslav Evdokimov went viral in many VKontakte publics, and then moved to other social networks. Today, Peter's YouTube channel has almost 36,500 subscribers, the videos are gaining tens of thousands of views, and the author himself uploads videos with enviable regularity.

We met with Piotr to discuss his work, how ideas for mashups come about and what the author of such musical content needs.

- Peter, today you are known on the Internet as the author of mashups. But your history in music began, for sure, earlier?

Twenty years ago, I briefly played in Mad V. They played thrash metal. Before that, there was another alt band, they played something like U2. He was a member of a group that performed German folk music.

— How did you get acquainted with the mashup genre? Who gave you the idea to do something similar yourself?

About ten years ago, I saw a video mixing Carcass and Madonna that impressed me. Then two videos came across where they mixed Nirvana with Rick Astley and Arabesque or something. I learned that this disgrace is called a mashup. It hooked me, I realized that I also want and can do something similar. But then I could not find how to do all this, where to get a separate voice track.

- Did you get down to business right away?

At first I abandoned it all. And in 2014, I accidentally found out that a clean vocal track can be completely downloaded. Unfortunately, you can not find a voice for every song.

About two months after I started working in the genre, I made Slayer with Kornelyuk. I put it in a group dedicated to Slayer, the views began to grow. Many people liked it, I realized that I was doing something. Later, there was another video for Metallica and Yulianna Karaulova, which I like, as well as a Pantera and Sandra mashup, the video of which was successfully removed from YouTube.

— What do you use to work on your videos? Do you use any special plugins or programs?

For work I mainly use simple software - Acid Pro, Adobe Audition. I use Sony Vegas for video. If you need to separate the vocals, then I take iZotope RX7, but the quality is worse compared to downloading the finished track.

- Where are the mashup ideas? Does someone suggest? Maybe subscribers?

Ideas come mostly spontaneously. In some everyday situations such as washing dishes or going to the store. I remember exactly that the idea to combine Slayer and Ace Of Base came when I was going to work. This is my most watched video today.

There are often suggestions to combine things, but I usually rely on my own ideas. Although there are exceptions.

- And what about the work process itself? Do you just take two compositions, throw them into the project and start twisting and turning? Is there a well-established workflow algorithm?

After an idea is born, two or more compositions are taken and added to the project. Adjusted in tempo and tonality, if necessary. And then... if it doesn't turn out funny or the track just doesn't sound, then further work is cancelled.

— How long does it take on average to create one mashup of two songs?

If you make audio, then everything depends on the complexity. It may take one day, or it may take several months. The video is usually made within one day.

— How is such content monetized on YouTube? Still, in recent times, the site has been quite aggressive towards copyright infringers.

As for monetization, I often encountered statements [strike — ed.] about copyright for a particular video until I was finally disconnected from monetization due to violation of these very rights. Representatives of Yuri Antonov were especially active, promising in the future to completely remove my channel on YouTube.

— Do the performers themselves somehow react to your work? What's going on in the comments below the videos? How do people from the outside look at it?

None of the authors of the original compositions wrote comments.
