The most effective pins for securing a bun are hairpins. Hairpins have several crimps (waves) in the middle of each prong, which help the pin grip the hair. The thicker, less flexible pins provide the strongest hold. Bobby pins are best used to hold down flyaway hairs or fringes and to secure curls or plaits. To use the bobby pin, it is best to hold it with the raised prong on the top side and slightly open.
METHOD: HOW TO MAKE A HAIR BUN FOR BALLET
Step 1: Make a ponytail
The first step to making a perfect ballet bun is putting your hair up into a ponytail. Brush all the hair towards the center back of the head. Gather the hair into a tight ponytail and secure with an elastic band, ensuring that there are no bumps. To stop frizzy and fly-away hairs, apply a small amount of gel evenly from the roots to the ends of the hair, with your fingers or with the comb. Children with very curly, thick or fine hair may need their hair gelled or sprayed before securing into a ponytail. Brush or gel fringes back off the face and secure with bobby pins if necessary.
Step 2: Twist into a bun
To make the ballet bun shape, hold the ponytail at the end and twist it firmly until it is all twisted into a rope. Then coil the ponytail into a flat circle around the hair elastic, continuing the coil in the same direction as the twist in the ponytail. This will stop the ponytail unravelling. Tuck the ends of the ponytail under the bun. Then place 3-4 hairpins around the bun to secure it, without taking your hands off the bun (see instructions for inserting hairpins). Next, place a hairnet over the bun. At this stage, you can make any adjustments to the shape of the bun. A finished ballet bun should be round and even in shape, and sit smoothly against the head.
Step 3: How to secure a bun using bobby pins
The final step to creating a perfect ballet bun is securing the bun. Hold the pin at the closed end, with the prongs facing the center of the coil. Insert the prongs a little way into the edge of the bun, catching a small amount of the bun edge. Then turn the prongs in and back outwards to catch some of the hair outside the bun. Lastly, turn the prongs inwards again and push into the center of the coil. Insert as many pins as you need to all around the edges of the bun, until it feels secure. Loose hairs can be gelled or sprayed to help them stay put.

How To Make A Perfect Ballet Bun - Ballet Bun Tips
You Will Need:
- Hair brush
- Hair band
- Hair net
- Hair pins
- Hair grips
Step 1: Make The Pony Tail
To make the perfect ballet bun you need to start with a perfect pony-tail! Begin by brushing back the hair, and gather it into a tight pony tail with a single hair band.
For a classical ballet bun it’s important that the bun isn’t too high or too low, so you need to make sure that the pony tail sits in the middle of the head and just above the top of the ear line:
Top Tips:
- For very wispy hair, you way want to slightly wet the hair before brushing it back into the pony tail.
- For a nice neat ballet bun, you want a tight pony-tail! Wrap the hair band around a few times to keep the pony-tail secure.
Step 2: Choose The Right Net For Your Ballet Bun
It’s important that you choose the right type of net for your ballet bun:
We highly recommend that you use a hair net rather than a bun net. You’ll find out why in step 5...
Step 3: Make The Ballet Bun
Start by taking the pony tail and loosely wrapping it around in a circle. It doesn’t need to be too tight at all, it can just be really loose at this stage:
Top Tip:
- Apply a slight twist to the pony tail as you wrap it around in a circle. This will help your ballet bun to keep its shape.
Step 4: Gather The Bun In Your Hairnet
Next you need to take the hair net and wrap one end of it it around the whole of the bottom of your ballet bun:
Then pull the other end of the hairnet upwards towards the forehead:
Don’t worry about all of the loose bits of hair - this is why you use a hair net, as you'll see in the next step...
Step 5: Twist, Wrap, Repeat!
Now you need to twist the hair net before bringing it back down to the bottom of the bun, catching all of the loose bits of hair:
Then you start the process again - wrap the hairnet around the bottom of the bun, pull the hair net up towards the forehead, twist and come back down to the bottom of the bun again.
The hair net is nice and big so after you have wrapped it around the bun once you can repeat this process 3 or 4 more times (depending on the thickness and volume of hair you are working with) ensuring that you catch all of the wispy bits of hair to make a neat ballet bun.
Step 6: Shape Your Ballet Bun
Now you need to begin to shape your ballet bun by teasing the hair into a nice symmetrical round shape, ensuring that there is no hole in the middle:
Step 7: Add The Hairpins To Your Ballet Bun
Next you need to add the hair pins to your ballet bun to hold it securely in place. Take a little bit of the bun, with the pin pointing outwards away from the centre of the bun:
Then, go up and over before pushing the pin back in towards the centre of the bun:
Repeat this process, working your way around the ballet bun in a circle, using 6 to 8 pins, depending on how big the bun is.
Top Tip:
- Try the ‘Super Pins’ for ballet buns by Tendu. Available in 3 colours to match your hair, these sturdy pins will keep your bun in place and you only need one 'Super Pin' for every 2 or 3 normal pins..
Step 8: Secure Any Wispy Bits With Hairgrips
If you want to you can add hair grips to each side of the head. This can help to secure any fly-away wispy bits of hair, keeping your ballet bun looking neat and tidy.
Step 9: Add A Bow To Your Ballet Bun (Optional)
You may wish to add a bow to your ballet bun. There are many styles and colours available and most will easily clip onto the hair, just above the bun.
Top Tip:
- For a traditional classical ballet bun, you’ll want to keep the accessories to a minimum.
Step 10: Add A Band And Grips To Your Ballet Bun (Optional)
You may wish to add a band and grips to your ballet bun:
Top Tips:
- Don’t forget to check with your dance teacher to find out what extra hair accessories (if any) are allowed in your dance classes.
- There may be specific requirements on how to wear your bun for dance exams, depending on which dance syllabus you are studying so remember to check with your dance teacher.

Hairstyle is an important part of a dancer's appearance. Competent styling not only complements the image, but also allows you to feel comfortable, and also does not interfere with various turns and movements. A ballroom dance hairstyle must meet certain requirements, so it must be carefully prepared in advance. You need to figure out how the hairstyle should look so as not to spoil the whole picture.
Features of hairstyles for ballroom dancing
Hairstyle for ballroom dancing requires special attention. It is characterized by extreme smoothness, brilliance and unusual patterns. As decorative elements, rhinestones, tiaras, combs, hairpins, hairpins, nets and much more can be used.
Dancers on the stage move a lot, their movements can be both smooth and sharp, energetic. Performers must be sure that when performing various turns and elements, the hairstyle will be firmly fixed and not fall apart.
But before you start any hairstyle, you need to stock up on various combs, hair dryer, clips, hairpins that will help you make a spectacular styling.
Hairstyle for ballroom dance: basic requirements
Very often the parents of little dancers do not pay due attention to hair, caring only about the dress. However, after watching the video of any competition, you can notice that each dancer has a perfect styling.
It doesn't matter if it's European ballroom dancing or Latina, the hairstyle requirements are the same and strict:
- Hair for ballroom dancing should be combined with dancers' outfits, so hair is very often decorated with fabric from costumes. However, she should not draw all attention to herself, because the main thing should be the quality of the dance performance.
- No matter what kind of dance is to be performed, the hairstyle should be simple and comfortable.
- Bright hair ornaments are prohibited. You should not repaint or highlight curls, glitter varnish is also not needed.
- Do not use hairpieces or extensions.
- It is unacceptable to perform with a dirty head or disheveled hair.
For non-compliance with the above points, the jury may reduce their marks, because the costume and hairstyle are taken into account when grading.
Criteria for choosing a hairstyle
Thinking about how to make a hairstyle for ballroom dancing, first of all, you need to understand what kind of styling is needed and how to choose it. And you need to pay attention to the following criteria:0003
- The style of the couple and their costumes. If the dress for the performance is bright in color, then the hairstyle should be chosen more restrained, but if the outfit is in gentle colors, then you can choose a more complex styling.
- Proportions of partners. The difference in height is compensated by the dancer's high bun. If the couple is about the same height, then it is better to abandon the high hairstyle.
- Man and lady head size. In order for the couple to look harmonious and balanced at the tournament, together with the styling, the size of the partner’s head should not exceed the size of the partner’s head.
- Face shape. Hairstyle for ballroom dancing should bring the shape of the head closer to the ideal oval. Owners of a round face will go for a shell-shaped styling, girls with a triangular face shape are best to opt for a straight or side parting.
- Hair length. The partner lifts long curls up, stabs them into a bun or shell. If the haircut is short, it is given more volume or curls are curled with tongs.
Women's hairstyles
Classic bun
Universal hairstyle suitable for Latin American and European programs. Gel is applied to wet hair, combed thoroughly and collected in a ponytail. You just need to wrap it around the base and fix it with studs. Additionally, you can use bright accessories.
Shell
The first step is to separate the bangs and decide on which side to part. Next, all the hair must be removed to the opposite side from it and stabbed with invisibility vertically so that all the curls remain on one side. After that, the hair is bouffanted and transferred to the other side. Tucking the ends and ordering them with hairpins. At the top, the tips are laid in the shape of a snail, and the bangs are laid in a wave. In the end, everything is fixed with varnish.
How to get perfectly smooth curls
When doing ballroom dance hairstyles for girls, you need to spend a lot of time and effort to keep your hair perfectly smooth and well combed.
The washed curls are combed into a ponytail and pinned up. Next, a foam is applied to the hair, distributed along the entire length and dried with a hair dryer. Then the gel is applied on top and also dried with a hairdryer, but in a cold mode. In conclusion, a foam is applied to the hair and fixed with a strong fixation varnish, you should not save on it, otherwise the hair may delaminate and fall apart.
Many dancers prefer to style their hair unwashed, as this will make them more manageable. In addition, skin secretions will protect the hair from the effects of styling products. Fix the hair in the same way as described above. And if you spray your hair with varnish before going on stage, then they will shine even more.
Requirements for men's hairstyles
Competition hairstyles for boys (ballroom dancing also requires careful study) must meet certain criteria. It is necessary to pay attention to accuracy, stability, practicality, ease of creation and technicality.
In addition to a beautiful appearance, a man's hairstyle should hide flaws and emphasize the advantages of a partner: with the right styling, you can visually lengthen the neck or correct height.
How to do a ballroom dance hairstyle for boys
Partners prefer hairstyles that are based on the individual characteristics of the person, his hair, figure, etc. And although the styles for boys do not differ much from each other, however, some tricks will help you quickly and perfectly style your hair.
After the curls are washed and towel dried, apply styling foam to the damp hair and begin to form the parting.
Next, using a comb, it is necessary to form the occipital area and alternately style the hair on the right and left sides of the parting. At this stage, the result should be dried and laid curls.
To make the hair shine, it must be combed well, small defects are eliminated with a thin tip of the comb. Next, the hair must be fixed with varnish, applied from a long distance, while additionally smoothing and smoothing the curls. It is advisable to fix the bangs not immediately. Lacquer is applied to it separately and also laid with a hairdryer.
Tips from experienced dancers
- Do not do your hair right before the performance. A few days before this, you should perform a trial version. If something goes wrong, it will not be possible to urgently redo the styling before the competition. Hairstyles for ballroom dancing, the photos of which are presented in this article, can serve as excellent examples.
- Washed hair the night before a performance is best combed back.
- If the hair is too thick, when applying the gel, it must be divided into two parts: the back of the head and the crown. In this case, it is necessary to choose a liquid gel that hardens gradually.
- After applying the gel, comb the hair first with a fine-toothed comb and then with a fine-tooth comb. In conclusion, the curls are combed with a brush lubricated with gel - thanks to this, the hair will lie in a given direction and freeze so “tightly”.

Hairstyle "volume bun", how to do, master
Dancers, especially ballerinas, do this styling all the time. Today there are many variations of it. The bundle can be tied at the crown, and someone will like it more at the back of the head or even on the side. It can consist of two or more circles, fastened with pins or Chinese sticks. And how beautiful the beam created from air braids looks!
It's no wonder that such sophisticated styling and its various manifestations are so popular today. It is worth noting that this is a favorite hairstyle for brides. At the same time, for any occasion in life, you can choose an individual "bundle". You can make it yourself without special skills. I'll tell you how a voluminous bun is created using a special roller:
1. We will need: a comb, a comb, invisible hairpins, a thin elastic band, a bun roller and, of course, hairspray.
2. Comb your hair thoroughly.
3. Tie a standard ponytail at the crown. To do this, we collect all the hair in the left hand, and with the right hand we carefully put a thin elastic band on the whole shock, which we hold on the wrist.
4. This is the most ordinary tail we need. We try to make it neat and without “waves”. We choose a thin elastic band so that it is not visible under the beam.
5. When the ponytail is tied, you can additionally smooth the hair with a thin comb so that it lies flat and there are no so-called "roosters". Here's how I do it. You can also pin invisibility so that individual hairs do not break out.
6. Take a roller, which is designed to form a bulk beam. This device is made of artificial threads intertwined with each other. It is soft, elastic and easily stretched, so it can be easily put on the tail. Rollers come in different colors: beige, brown or black, like mine.
7. Next, I evenly distribute the hair from the ponytail around the roller. Hair should completely cover it, as shown in the picture.
8. In the next step, I begin to tuck the hair under the roller, strand by strand. I do this very gently, with my fingertips, so that the hair lies smoothly and evenly.
9. Having tucked all the hair under the bun, carefully wrap the end of the ponytail around the elastic band and hide it under the roller. The model's hair is long enough, so you have to work hard so that all the hair is discreetly packed under the roller.
10. Now we fasten our hairstyle with hairpins. They need to be pinned in a certain way so that the structure holds well. To do this, first we insert the hairpin vertically into the base of the bundle, and then turn it inward, catching the hair from the head, and put it under the roller. In this way, we capture the hair from the bundle and on the head at its base, which allows us to properly fix the entire styling.
11. We have an even and neat volumetric beam. Here's how interesting it looks from behind.
12. Be sure to apply hairspray so that the bun holds well and individual hairs do not fall out of the hairstyle.
I did not decorate this beautiful bun with any decorations, but they are quite appropriate.
