Chopping Dance or Questions I Get Asked is a TikTok dance trend in which the dancer sways their hips while acting out a number of stylized chopping moves with their hands, beginning with chopping on a cutting board, followed by stacking their hands and chopping as if cutting wood and ending with finger guns. The trend began in March 2021, going viral on TikTok over the course of the year. The dance is set to the song "The Magic Bomb" by Hoang Read.

Origin

On March 28th, 2021, TikToker^[1] @themanhngo_ posted a video (shown below) performing "the chopping dance," a dance that he created set to the song "The Magic Bomb" by Hoang Read.^[2] The dance mimics various forms of chopping, while the TikToker also sways their hips. The video gained over 106,000 views in four months.

The dance blew up across Chinese TikTok over the course of the following months, resulting in a number of popular videos performing it. For example, on April 8th, TikToker^[3] @c.0214 posted a video performing the dance, garnering over 40 million views in three months (shown below).

The trend soon gained worldwide popularity in the following weeks. On May 13th, TikToker^[5] @1facerussia, a deepfake Vladimir Putin, performed the dance, garnering over 46 million views in two months (shown below).

"Questions I Get Asked" Trend

In July 2021, the Chopping Dance became a framing device for a trend in which TikTokers answer questions they're frequently asked regarding a profession, hobby, belief, etc. that they take part in, often with tongue-in-cheek answers. For example, on July 3rd, TikToker^[6] @turtlewithhat posted a video captioned "Questions we get asked as lesbians" following the trend, gaining over 8.1 million views in three weeks (shown below, left). On July 8th, TikToker^[7] @mickyxsigns posted one captioned "things i hear a lot as a deaf creator," in which she jokes about not being able to hear anything, garnering over 13 million views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).

On July 15th, TikToker^[8] @jamishio posted a video following the trend answering questions about having a Minecraft girlfriend, such as whether he was the smelly kid in school while wearing a Minecraft Creeper hoodie, gaining over 7 million views in six days (shown below).

Jamishio continued to perform the trend over the course of the month, resulting in a number of popular videos. On July 18th, he posted a video answering questions about living with his parents at 24, gaining over 8.8 million views in three days (shown below).

This week, we look at the journey of an instrumental dance track from Vietnam to TikTok hit, and we survey the evolution of a dance that some American celebs are juicing for engagement.

The sound

It’s an instrumental track and it’s typically accompanied by what’s been called the chopping dance or Magic Bomb dance, a series of finger and hand movements that correspond to the thumping beats, as demonstrated by themanhngo in March.

A few of the earlier TikToks showed different iterations of the dance, but this one from account japanleaders is certainly the most dynamic. There are also quite a few tutorials for the movements.

In May, a deepfake of Vladimir Putin danced to it. Eventually, it landed on American TikTok and became a “Questions I get” trend, which is both enlightening and depressing.

The song seems to be reframing the celebrity Q&A, too. Meghan Trainor and JoJo Siwa used the sound to answer questions they often get asked. Getting more creative, Olympic fencer Monica Aksamit showed the disparity between what the U.S. pays athletes who win medals, compared to other countries.

Where’s it from?

The sound, which has been used in more than 3 million TikToks, comes from the beginning of “The Magic Bomb,” a 2021 track by Vietnamese musician/producer Hoàng Read.

Dutch dance label Spinnin’ Records recently released the official audio, no doubt because of the TikTok virality. The song originally came out in April. There’s not a whole lot of info online about Read, though his music is on Spotify and Tidal.

Some of the earliest TikToks to use the song and dance are from Vietnamese accounts, and a YouTube video from April features a Vietnamese dance crew performing it. But it’s not clear who originated the dance. (In the Know points to TikToker themanhngo.)

Sound off

The trajectory of “The Magic Bomb” from somewhat obscure (at least to Americans) club song to inescapable TikTok sound isn’t uncommon, but its jump from Vietnamese social media to American is interesting.

As Cat Zhang writes for Pitchfork, Read’s song is one of a few from Vietnamese musicians that’s crossed over on TikTok. Last year, the 2016 song “Dưới Quê Vui Hơn” became an unlikely hit.

“Apparently, they saw a fight in my dance with my father”

Evgeny Shpak, a 25-year-old graduate student in economics at one of the Omsk universities, wrote on the social network that he was beaten up by employees of a private security company in a restaurant. On February 18, a son was born to a young man. And he decided to celebrate this event with his relatives at the Mishkin&Mishkin restaurant. In addition to Eugene's parents, his 16-year-old sister was at the celebration. According to the young dad, she is observed in the cardiology center. But Omsk assures that family gatherings, which dragged on until one in the morning, did no harm to her.

Evgeny recalls: a man in a white shirt walked into the karaoke room where they were sitting absolutely alone (not surprising for a weekday). Without introducing himself, he asked everyone to leave the room. Shpak did not agree, saying that they paid for everything, they did not interfere with anyone.

- According to this man, we behaved incorrectly, allegedly started some kind of fight. I don't know where they saw her. Apparently, in our dance with my father, - Eugene says calmly. - Is it forbidden to dance?

- Apparently, it was some kind of sharp and aggressive .. . "dance"?

- Well, you know, there are a lot of sports dances in this world. There was no fight, - Eugene repeats and continues to reason. Fighting is when people want to hurt each other. And she must always have a motive. He wasn't here. We didn't do anything, we didn't hurt anyone.

That is, the family refused to leave. The establishment is open on weekdays until 3 pm. Then the clients began to demand an administrator. In response, a man in a white shirt called STB (security firm).

Looking ahead, we note: when a recording from a surveillance camera appeared on the Web ( see « Another opinion » ), Evgeny wrote on his page that he and his father performed the “Capoeira dance”. He reiterated that he did no harm to anyone. Yes, in fact, it’s not so important here - was it a fight or was it a “dance”. Everyone saw what relatives were doing on the dance floor. In any case, this behavior was clearly not normal. But, of course, this does not justify the employees of the STB, if they really, as Shpak claims, used their fists.

When they arrived at the restaurant and began to ask the customers to leave the establishment, Evgeny started filming everything. The recording shows how he tries to find out the name of one of the employees of the security company, and he answers: "Vaska Pupkin." Then, when visitors begin to be taken out of the premises, due to the skirmish that has begun, it is almost impossible to make out anything on the video.

Note: Evgeny's voice clearly shows that he is drunk. Well, the young man himself does not deny that he drank that evening.

Beating in a restaurant

“ONE OF THE CHOPOVTS HIT ME DIRECTLY IN THE FACE WITH A SHOE”

According to Yevgeny, the Pupkin private security company first pushed and then hit me in the face. Eugene fell, and the phone flew off in the other direction.

- Father picked him up and put him in his pocket, after which they sprayed him in the face, threw him on the floor, handcuffed him, writes Shpak. - And me too. Then they started kicking us. I shouted: "On what basis are you doing this?!" And I vividly remember one moment when an employee of the private security company came up and hit me right in the face with his boot, telling me to shut up.

As proof, the Omsk citizen posted on the Internet a photo with traces of beatings.

Later, according to Shpak, several more guards arrived. He says that no one called the police until the mother and sister of handcuffed Yevgeny did it. “Bracelets” were removed from him only when law enforcement officers arrived at the scene.

- But even after that, there was a feeling as if we had committed some kind of crime, and not the employees of the private security company, - the restaurant visitor is indignant. - Before the department, we were offered to go with STB employees, but, of course, we refused. We waited for another police car to arrive.

After that, Shpak wrote a statement to the police about the employees of the STB Okhrana. And then he passed the medical examination. According to the guy, it confirmed that his health was slightly harmed. Omich, who was diagnosed with bruises and bruises on his face, legs and other parts of his body, was prescribed a course of treatment.

- The police said that they would unambiguously initiate a criminal case, regardless of whether we write a statement or not, - Shpak added. - The major, whom I visited yesterday, said bluntly: judging by the video and the testimony that has already been collected, the STB officers, having exceeded their authority, beat us up.

The police say the following:

- On the spot, the officers found out that there was a conflict between the visitor and the security officers in the cafe, during which the 25-year-old Omsk citizen was injured.

However, so far no one in the Ministry of Internal Affairs claims that it was the employees of the private security company who beat the young man. The verification continues.

ANOTHER OPINION

“INITIALLY THE CONFLICT BREAKED BETWEEN FATHER AND SON”

MISHKIN&MISHKIN restaurant owner Alexander SHEPET:

- Our lawyers are currently preparing a libel suit. We have CCTV footage. After the men were taken to the police station, she was seized by the police. When viewed, they confirmed the legitimacy of the actions of the STB Okhrana employees. After all, it all started precisely with the conflict that broke out between the son and father. You understand that this should not be in a restaurant. Therefore, the security officer asked the customers to calm down and leave the establishment. Having received a refusal, he called the STB officers (we signed a contract with them for a quick response). They repeated the request to leave the premises, but none of these people were beaten.

Later, representatives of the entertainment establishment posted the same entry in the “Emergency in Omsk” group on the social network “VKontakte”.

- Unfortunately, at the moment we understand how much this message has damaged the reputation of the restaurant and bar "Mishkin and Mishkin," the commentary to the video reads. - We absolutely do not understand the position of a citizen who accuses our staff and our leadership.

The footage shows that two customers really did not behave very adequately: in front of the staff, the men waved their arms and kicked each other. Several times the "dancers" fell to the floor. Then a staff member approached them. The camera captured how the eldest of the men defiantly pushed the approaching man in the chest and began to speak aggressively with him.
