How to do the backpack dance

How do you do the floss dance, who is The Backpack Kid and why is he suing Fortnite?

IT was one of the biggest crazes of the past 12 months - with everyone from sports stars, actors, presenters and Fortnite gamers getting in on the act.

Dubbed the new dab, the move got kids and teens dancing all over the world.

How do you do the floss dance move?

To do the floss dance move, you swing your hips in the opposite direction to your arms - which are in two fists.

After swinging your arms to one side, keeping them straight, you then move one arm behind your back, and bring it back out in front.

Your hips are swinging from side-to-side with each beat.

You then swing your arms out to the other side and repeat the same moves.

Start slowly, and then increase your speed as you get more confident.

Et voila! Parents, you're officially "down with the kids".

Don't worry if you struggle at first. It's harder than it looks, and requires A LOT of coordination.

Who is The Backpack Kid and why is he suing Fortnite?

The floss dance was invented by Insta-famous dancer The Backpack Kid, aka 16-year-old Russell Horning, who has 2 million followers.

He posted a video of himself doing the dance move on August 18, 2016, and it soon racked up tens of thousands of views.

School kid Russell, from the States, is known for his free-flowing dance moves and deadpan expression.

Several YouTubers followed suit with similar videos.

Then on May 20, 2017, The Backpack Kid stole the show on Saturday Night Live, as he did the dance to a live performance of Katy Perry's song Swish Swish.

He even wore his signature rucksack on stage.

In December 2018, Russell announced that he was suing Fortnite publisher Epic Games for using his moves in-game without permission.

A representative for the company said: "We do not comment on ongoing litigation."

Why are some calling for it to be banned?

The craze, which hit new heights in Britain after Tottenham ace Dele Alli celebrated his 22nd birthday with a hilarious attempt at the dance, has led a school in Devon to ban the move.

While Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins embraced their "embarrassing mum" sides on Good Morning Britain, it seems Ilfracombe Junior School is keen to ensure other mums don't follow suit.

The move, which has strong associations with the ultra-popular video game Fortnite, has been accused of being used to "surround and intimidate children" in the playground.

Headteacher Catherine Cox sent out a letter to bemused parents saying: “Fortnite is about the mass killing of other human beings and being rewarded by a dance of celebration if you are successful. One of these dances is called the Nazi dance!"

However, the ban has infuriated parents who took to social media to vent their anger, with one raging: “My daughter is eight. She doesn’t even know what Fortnite is. I find this ludicrous my child now feels this way about a dance.”

The teenager who went viral for dancing next to Katy Perry while she performed on "Saturday Night Live" in 2017 says he now makes "at least six figures" per year from advertisers on YouTube and Instagram.

Russell Horning, also known as "backpack kid," appeared during Perry's song "Swish Swish" while doing the floss, a dance which involves rapidly swinging your arms to the front and back of your body. Horning didn't invent the move, although after the performance, its popularity exploded, as did the teenager's rise to fame.

Inside Edition caught up with Horning, 18, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia. His room doubles as a studio, where he continues to make YouTube videos for his hundreds of thousands of subscribers. He also does modeling gigs and has a new music video out.

Along with collecting advertising revenue from social media, he soon plans to generate more money through "backpack kid" merchandise, including backpacks, shirts and hoodies.

Horning lives with his mom, Antia Redd, who has been supportive of her son along the way.

"Being the mom of the backpack kid is the most stressful and fun thing I've done in my life," she told Inside Edition.

In 2018, Redd sued Epic Games on her son's behalf, alleging that the floss was his and that the developer's video game Fortnite featured it unlawfully. Actor Alfonso Ribeiro of "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," along with three others, also sued the game developer over their use of various dance moves in Fortnite.

Ribeiro and Redd voluntarily dismissed their respective lawsuits after the Supreme Court ruled in early 2019 such a suit has no legal merit if copyright registration has not yet been finalized, according to Digital Music News.

Dental floss made the world floss

02/07/2020

Hey, are you dancing the floss? The same floss dance that literally conquered the whole world? Not? Then rather look for a training video on the Internet. There are a great many of them!

When Russell Horning posted a video of his dance move on Instagram, in just a matter of days, he went from a typical American teenager from Lawrenceville, Georgia, to a guy who will be recognized by the face all over the world.

The dance went viral and interested Katy Perry herself, who invited the creative 15-year-old to perform with her on Saturday Night Live. At the end of the speech, the number of subscribers to his account reached 585 thousand people. Later, he also starred in the music video for Swish Swish.

After such a resounding success, Russell came up with the nickname Backpack Kid (a boy with a backpack) and began to dance his Floss dance exclusively with a backpack on his shoulders, believing that it would look much funnier that way.

Today, Russell has over 2 million followers on his Instagram@thebackpackkid, including stars like Rihanna and DJ Diplo, and his dancing draws crowds of fans.

Russell has already managed to try himself as an actor and star in several videos and commercials. He also has his own website where you can buy t-shirts and sweatshirts. Russell is into hip-hop music and plans to keep making people laugh with his social media videos.

Where did the name "Floss" come from?

The dance got such an unusual name because of its resemblance to the movements that we perform when we clean the interdental space with dental floss. The author of the dance is not against this option, but he himself prefers to call his creation "Russell's Dance".

How to prepare for the first dance lesson? What to bring to dance classes?

    Contents

If you are going to visit a dance studio for the first time, it is important to know how to properly prepare for the lesson. To do this, several points must be taken into account. Then you can feel confident and "armed" for dancing.

What to bring to the dance class

The ideal option is to have a bag or a backpack, which will always contain the necessary things for classes. Then you will be sure that you have taken everything you need with you and have not forgotten anything. What should be put in such a bag?

    Clothes

To figure out what clothes are right for you for dance lessons, you need to know for which particular direction you choose them:

    • Tight clothes made of elastic fabric are suitable for ground lessons. It can be leggings, a T-shirt, a T-shirt. Give preference to sports options, without a variety of fasteners, rhinestones, zippers. They can injure you or your partner. Avoid clothes made from low-quality synthetic materials that are poorly breathable and do not absorb moisture. Moreover, the idea of exercising in leatherette leggings should be abandoned. The fit should be medium or high so that the leggings do not slip during active movements. Some people are comfortable in shorts, but not all. Bare feet can be damaged by contact with the floor.
    • For active styles like hip hop or contemporary, looser clothing is best. Wide trousers, oversized sweaters, T-shirts several sizes larger will allow you to feel comfortable and fully open up in the dance.
    • Leotards (one-piece leotard) are purchased for classical dance styles. The sleeve can be long or short. Leggings are worn under the tights, but of a lower density.

Sign up for a trial lesson

Clothing should not be provocative, exposing those parts of the body that should not be exposed in public. Avoid transparent fabrics, underwear should not shine through. If you are comfortable wearing a top and shorts, make sure they are long enough. Choose clothes based on the temperature in the lesson. Do not dress too lightly if it is cold in the hall and vice versa. If you get hot during the dance, you run the risk of hypothermia while you remain motionless.

Choose clothes according to your taste, so that it is not only comfortable, but also uplifting, setting you in the right mood.

    Footwear

Just as important as clothing. It should also be selected, focusing on the style of dance. For hip hop, stable sneakers or sneakers will be relevant. "Balniks" are recommended to practice in special shoes, as well as those who are fond of step. But oriental and Latin American dances will be more "economical". For them, ordinary shoes are suitable or you can do without them at all.

It is possible to train in socks, if we are talking about stalls or contemporary. But there is a risk of falling if the floor is too slippery. It will also be difficult to perform some of the tricks. In this case, Czech or half shoes would be ideal.

What else to put in your bag

In addition to clothes, there are a few other things to keep in mind when preparing for dance lessons:

    • If you have weak knees and ankles, take care to protect them. For this, knee pads and elastic bandages are useful. To protect the lower back from hypothermia, a warming belt is suitable.
    • Additional “equipment” includes weights. Whether you need them or not is up to you. They are not suitable for beginner dancers. Weights are for arms and legs. Their weight starts from 0.5 kilograms.
    • For those with long hair, elastic bands and hair clips are a must to help them collect. Loose hair is not always comfortable to deal with.
    • Be sure to pack a large bottle of water in your bag, as you're bound to get thirsty when you exercise.
    • A small towel that absorbs moisture well is not superfluous. They make it easy to wash your face.

Don't wear make-up before going to class. In the process of training, there is a risk that the makeup will flow and smear. Also avoid strong-smelling perfumes and deodorants. People around you may not only have a different taste for aromas, but also be allergic to them. But the use of antiperspirants will allow you to feel more confident in training and avoid unpleasant situations.

Do not go to class if you feel unwell. When you exercise, you may get worse. In addition, you can accidentally infect other students or teachers.

Don't go to training hungry. You are provided with a breakdown, and they are very necessary for dancing. But you also don’t need to eat immediately before training, the optimal time for eating is an hour before training. Overeating before dancing is also not worth it, it will make you sleepy, your movements will slow down and become difficult.
