doing the Safety Dance to The Birdie Song jammin' to Agadoo because i'm a True Survivor!

We’ve been stuck in a perpetual heat wave in our neck of the woods – and no rain, so it’s almost desert mode around here. Thank goodness for central air and nice tall shady pine trees or we’d be excusing ourselves from the daily routine because of the vapors.

Bonus points if you can hit me with a quote using the word ‘vapors’.

At least today will bring some cooler oceanic air to cool things down a bit, and if we’re lucky we might finally see some rain later in the week. *fingers crossed*

Meanwhile let’s get this party started and play some interesting music, shall we? Or in this case, since the theme is “80’s Music with a twist.  Please put at least ONE funny tune from the 80’s or they may all be funny if you like!”

So yeppers, let’s twist away – the hubby thought I should take it literally and post songs about twisting, but I upped the ante with some crazy funky songs instead. Especially since at least one of them made me giggle.

Let’s start off with a song from 1983 that’s an infuriatingly catchy tune of cheesedom – a one-hit wonder by a highly regarded group at the time. This song either then or now will furrow its way into your brain and set up camp there, so beware.

It made the top ten singles chart worldwide in its day, written after the author got kicked out of a nightclub for pogoing to a New Wave song. This ‘pogoing’ became the dance craze after disco died out, but it was a lot more vigorous than disco dancing.

So this song is apparently a rally against bouncers throwing people out of clubs for pogoing – essentially a protest ditty calling for freedom of expression. So naturally the music video is really insane with a medieval theme.

Get up and dance to Men Without Hats with “Safety Dance”:

Next up is a song from 1982 that has no lyrics because it’s an instrumental piece. As soon as it starts playing, you’ll recognize it as something a bit different than the title of the video below.

Every party in the 80’s (and pretty much every wedding) had this song as part of their repertoire, with party goers pretending not to feel stupid when they were doing the silly dance that comes along with this song.

This particular song has been covered in many different countries with 150 different versions of it out in the world. I’m sure you’ll sleep a little easier tonight knowing that, or be cursing me for the ear-worm I’m invoking on you.

Give a listen to (and I’m sorry/not sorry) The Tweets with “The Birdie Song”:

Next up is a song from 1984 I don’t remember ever hearing myself (until now). It’s been described as one of the “ultimate grotesque cheesy songs of the 80’s, that when you hear it, life will drain slowly from your body, leaving you a shell of your former self.”

I don’t know if I’d go that far with the description, but cheesy is definitely descriptive. This was a huge hit in Britain – where it reached #2 in the charts as well as all over Europe. Apparently it was named as the worst song ever written by Q magazine in 2003. I’ll let you decide for yourself.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering about the lyrics, here are some choice ones for you:

“Aga doo doo doo push pineapple, shake the tree! / Aga doo doo doo push pineapple grind coffee! / To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees / Come and dance every night sing with a Hula melody!”

You’re welcome. And now, without further ado, here’s Black Lace with “Agadoo”:

Last, but definitely (not) least, is a song that’s not from the 80’s, but considering the artist and the music video, it totally could be 80’s as heck. You’ll see. This new song from this unconventional artist debuted April 16, 2015, and is a theme song for a 2015 Swedish martial arts comedy short film that was written, directed by, and starring David Sandberg.

And no, Sandberg isn’t the artist with the song, he’s just the dude who wrote, filmed, and produced the short film that was funded through Kickstarter and was selected to screen in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival – it didn’t win.

The music video features this particular artist with an altered scene from the trailer of the movie and features clips from the film as well as an end scene with himself and the star of the movie short riding a tyrannosaurus.

I told you this is the pièce de résistance of cheese, didn’t I?

Get ready for some giggles for David Hasselhoff with “True Survivor”:

Methinks all this cheese needs more wine…

Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree, to the knees,
Come and dance every night, sing with the hula melody.

I met a hula mistress somewhere in Waikiki,
Well, she was selling pineapple, playing ukulele,
And when I went to the girl, “Come on and teach me to sway,”
She laughed and whispered to me, “ Yes, come tonight to the bay."

The lovely beach, in the sky the moon of Kauai,
Around calypso sarong we'll all be singing this song.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree,
    Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee,
To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees,
Come and dance every night, sing with the hula melody.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree,
    Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee,
To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees,
Come and dance every night, sing with the hula melody.

And down on the shore they gather romance,
She showed me much more, not only to dance.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree,
    Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee,
To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees,
Come and dance every night, sing with the hula melody.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree,
    Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee,
To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees,
Come and dance every night, sing with the hula melody.

The lovely beach, in the sky the moon of Kauai,
Around calypso sarong we'll all be singing this song.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree,
    Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee,
To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees,
Come and dance every night, sing with the hula melody.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree,
    Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee,
To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees,
Come and dance every night, sing with the hula melody.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, shake the tree,
Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, ground coffee,
Left, right, jump up and down and kneel,
Come dance every night, sing to the hula tune.

I met a hula lady somewhere in Waikiki
Well, she was selling pineapples, she played the ukulele,
And when I approached the girl: “Come on, teach me how to pump”,
She laughed and whispered to me: “Yes, come to the bay tonight."

Beautiful beach, Kauai moon in the sky,
Around the calypso sarong we will all sing this song.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, shake the tree,
    Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, ground coffee,
Left, right, jump up and down and kneel,
Come dance every night, sing to the hula tune.

Agadoo doo doo push the pineapple shake the tree
Agadoo doo doo push the pineapple ground coffee
Left right jump up and down and kneel
Come dance every night sing to the hula tune.

And on the shore they collect romance,
She showed me much more than just dancing.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, shake the tree,
Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, grind the coffee,
Left, right, jump up and down and kneel,
Come dance every night, sing to the hula tune.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, shake the tree,
Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, grind coffee,
Left, right, jump up and down and kneel,
Come dance every night, sing to the hula tune.

Beautiful beach, Kauai moon in the sky,

Left, right, jump up and down and kneel,
Come dance every night, sing to the hula tune.

Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, shake the tree,
Agadoo-doo-doo, push the pineapple, grind coffee,
Left, right, jump up and down and kneel,
Come dance every night, sing to the hula tune.

    Haggadah – Breslev

    Haggadah

AGADAh part of the Oral Law that is not part of the Alacha Haggadah includes parables, legends, maxims, sermons, poetic hymns to the people of Israel and the Holy Land, philosophical and theological reasoning, etc. In the Mishnah, aggadic material is contained in relatively small quantities and is usually found at the end of treatises or at the end of the presentation of the views of any religious authority. In the Gemara of the Jerusalem Talmud, Aggadic material occupies about a third of the text, and in the Gemara of the Babylonian Talmud, about a quarter of the text. In the Gemaras, aggadic material is also predominantly located at the junctions of sections of a halachic nature.

The main creator of the Haggadah was the Jews of Eretz Israel during the Second Temple and up to the end of the Talmudic period. The Aggadic material contained in the Gemara of the Babylonian Talmud is also predominantly Palestinian in origin. This is the origin of the Aggadic material in all the oldest midrashim. Being the product of the creativity of many generations, the Haggadah is largely based on the Tanakh (Bible). Many narrative fragments included in the Haggadah are a record of folk traditions associated with biblical characters. Events recounted in the Bible often serve as the core of a new unfolding narrative in the Haggadah. Characters, who are given relatively little space and attention in the Bible, sometimes become the central characters of the stories of the Haggadah.

The Haggadah does not contain clearly defined prescriptions, the fulfillment of which is considered obligatory, and the religious authorities of the Talmudic period did not consider it as normative as the Alacha. Some parts of the Haggadah are the oldest sources of Jewish mysticism, especially the haggadic materials associated with the development of Jewish eschatology. Many fragments of the Haggadah have the character of a sharp controversy with the Sadducees, Gnostics, and Christians.

Many parables and legends of the Haggadah contain plots and motifs that are widely used in world folklore.

Halacha was not the only subject of study in the Houses of Learning. The sages were not limited to teaching the law and its interpretation. Sometimes the sage told about this or that event from the life of the forefathers or the period of kings. Often a moralizing conclusion followed from what was told; usually the story inspired faith and hope for the future.

The goal of many historical haggadot (tales) is to prove that the Finger of God is visible in everything that happens in the world. The creators of A. did not seek to separate historical truth from legend, which is why exaggerations and metaphors are so frequent in haggadot, which distinguish poetic speech from the dry language of formal logic. A. had a special passion for individuals mentioned in Scripture, such as Abel and Cain, Abraham and Nimrod, Jacob and Esau, Moses and Bil'am, contrasting the first to the second in each pair, and attributed everything good and beautiful to the forefathers and prophets and all evil to their adversaries. Sometimes rulers contemporary to its author were encrypted under fictitious names in the haggadah. So A. narrated about Ahaz, the sinful king, and Jehoiakim, about Ahashverosh or Hiram, and meant Antiochus, Caligula, or the bloodthirsty Pirosis (V century). Contemporaries knew who A was really talking about.

Historical A. began the story with the first couple - Adam and Eve (Chava). From them A. refers to the forefathers, prophets, righteous men and wise men of a later time. The most honorable place in the legends of A. occupy, of course, Abraham and Moshe (Moses). Of the kings, A. prefers David and describes with special love the history of his life and exploits. A. does not avoid the kings of other peoples: Assyria and Babylon, Alexander the Great and the rulers of Rome. In the period after the destruction of the Temple, A. devotes his pages to Torah scholars and sages.

Moral-religious A., taking the fabric of Scripture as a basis, distributed the expressive weaving of parables, fables about animals (especially about foxes), loved by folklore, so that the pattern was convex, visible, brighter.
