This subgenre organically fits between Progressive Psy and the classic Psychedelic in the BPM range, combining the best elements of these two. It is arguably the most common Psytrance subgenre now that sounds on the festivals all over the world, and in fact, if you hear the word “Psytrance”, it’s most likely referred to this particular subgenre.
Note: read why author prefers to call these tracks Psytrance and not Progressive Psy in the blog.

Emerging in the mid 00’s in Europe, Progressive Psy has quickly expanded to become one of the most common Psytrance subgenres. And it’s very diverse too, featuring a quite wide range of vibes. Progressive Psy doesn’t utilise one particular type of sound, but rather focuses on the groove, the flow, and how it progresses over time.

Although this subgenre might be formally called Progressive, it’s typically slower, deeper and less melodic than the Progressive Psy we know today. Tracks of this subgenre build-up slowly, allowing artists to focus more on things like reverb tails, delay effects, little percussion tricks, and other subtle details.
Note: probably, Dark Progressive aka Zenonesque and Psygressive will be separated in the future version of this guide. Please read more in the blog.

Pioneered by Juno Reactor and then recently popularised by Vini Vici, Tribal Psy utilises triplets bassline pattern along with some ethnic drums and vocal samples. Some producers overused triplets so much in the recent years, so at some point, having a triplet drop is almost considered as a cliché.

As the title suggests, this subgenre is a blend of Psytrance and Techno that combines various elements from these two. And since both Psytrance and Techno can vary in tempo and vibe, there are pretty much no boundaries to this subgenre too: it can go from deep and minimal to hard and rough.

Goa Trance is the ancestor of all Psytrance music as a whole we know today. Formed in the 80’s in Goa, India, by the modern hippies of that time, Goa Trance got its global recognition in the mid 90’s. Goa Trance is considered as “organic”, that is to say, it does not have the typical “metallic” sounds of electronic music and often presents an oriental aesthetics in its melodies, mostly with Indian consonance, as well as various tribal elements from the Indian culture such as references to the Buddhist or Hinduist mythology and mysticism. Although Goa Trance is considered as an oldschool genre now, some artists and labels are still releasing it, referring to it as a New School or Neogoa.

Nitzhonot is a subgenre that formed from the classic Goa Trance in the mid 90’s in Israel, and it literally means “victories” in Hebrew. It is typically faster than Goa Trance, with high-pitched kick drums and fast-paced oriental melodies. And just like Goa Trance, Nitzhonot considered an underground subgenre among Psytrance as a whole, which is an underground style itself.

Unlike of a typical straight Psytrance bassline pattern, the Full-on basssline plays on various notes across few octaves, creating a special rhythm and melody that way. Hi-Tech is a Psytrance style strongly influenced by Dark Psytrance, Psycore, and Full-On. It is characterized by a synthetic aesthetic pushed to the extreme. In terms of tempo, Hi-Tech vary from 150 BPM to over 200 BPM, making it and Psycore the fastest Psychedelic Trance styles. Unlike Psycore, Hi-Tech can present an absence of atmosphere in favor of a non-regular melodic structure. In addition, Hi-Tech is generally the least predictable and constant of all Psychedelic Trance styles.

Goa-trance.
Musical enlightenmentGoa-trance
Known to science is such a kind of trance as goa-trance, also known as psi-trance. This is beach dance music with an oriental flavor. In terms of sound, it is at best similar to a pop-symphony orchestra that has decided to play a cheerful industrial - a consequence of the fact that industrial bands have slipped en masse into a trance.
Goa is a resort on the west coast of India. From the point of view of the vast majority of Hindus, Goa is a hotbed of crime and debauchery. The authorities are trying in every possible way to poison the lives of wild tourists and put an end to rampant drug addiction and naked swimming.
The most famous attraction in Goa, apart from the sea, drugs and the Wednesday flea market, is, of course, the night parties. Acid House came here in 1988, brought by European tourists. In parallel with the boom around trance in Europe, its specific goa variety arose.
Dancing begins at sunset and continues until dawn. Loud music is played, usually from a cassette recorder; Indian holidaymakers and local residents suffer greatly from this roar. During the party, you can buy spirits, lemonade, tea and, of course, ecstasy, LSD and marijuana. The ultraviolet lamps are on, so that all white garments begin to glow with a chemical violet light. Enthusiasts paint themselves with luminescent paints. The largest beach dance takes place around Christmas. It attracts up to twenty thousand people.
Many vacationers believe that Goa trance is just like that and they do it on the beach in Goa. In beach sheds, they only multiply cassettes, which are then sold to tourists at a flea market.
Actually, it is not so important what exactly happens in Goa. In Europe, in the mid-90s, Goa parties were held both on the slopes of the Alps and in concrete Hamburg cellars. The fashion for these parties is long gone. One could learn about holding such parties from colorful posters, on which something Indian was always present - most often the god Ganesha - he has an elephant's head, it is impossible to confuse. CDs with goa trance were also decorated in space-Indian style: many stars, clouds, lotus flowers, incomprehensible stains of a sugary-chemical color and on top of all this - Ganesha or his friend Krishna playing the flute. Inside there could be soapy synth spills, and rather perky hardcore, and speeches by Bhagwan or Hare Krishna songs overlaid on a rhythm machine, and just joyful dance music without much fanfare.
Fans of this product are often called neo-hippies. They themselves agree that they are striving to expand their consciousness, to know the truth and overcome the boundaries of their Self, which confuses the media a lot, who are accustomed to accusing techno youth of lack of spirituality, callousness and lack of any position.
Goa trance fanatics are abnormally joyful, optimistic and positive thinking people. In their worldview, they are very similar to members of some non-dangerous sect with an eastern bias. Many of them are former metalheads and hard techno fans, according to the touching autobiographies they post online. All of them are sure that with the help of goa trance enlightenment came to them, they feed their mind with goa trance, like nectar.
Many of them believe that goa trance itself is so strong that it does not need any drug reinforcement, that is, music works better than any drug. One often comes across the statement that while dancing, they literally see the music - and this is without drugs. Some, however, do not hide the fact that ecstasy and LSD enhance the rosy impression.
Techno-trance
Techno-trance In the summer of 1992, the word "trance" suddenly entered the mainstream. Trance began to be called melodic electronic music, which did not hit on the head like stupid techno, but entailed. The rhythm became very light, and the general atmosphere became airy and transparent. If tight sound

Nu-trance
Nu-trance Every summer, British club magazines such as Muzik, Mixmag or DJ begin to assure that trance and the fashion to dance in the bosom of nature - on the grass and on the sand - are back; it seems that otherwise the proletarian youth will go to Ibiza without any pleasure. And every autumn -

The main elements of the culture of psy-trance and goa-trance are the same. To create them, the same inventory is used, concerts (parties, raves) are held according to similar schemes, fans of both genres are popularly called “trancers”, they have the same attributes: “acid” colors and patterns, “ॐ” signs, etc. .
The main difference, as the name suggests, is the musical emphasis on "psychedelia", while the central theme of goa trance is traditionally rhythm and dance. Psy-trance is subdivided into numerous sub-genres, oriented towards either the "hard" side (en:dark psy) or the "soft" side (suomisaundi). To date, the most "mainstream" has become the so-called "full-on", which, as a rule, is built according to certain rhythmic rules, is quite harmonious and melodic and suits most fans of the genre.
It should be noted that modern music, especially electronic music, is generally difficult to classify, and different groups of people often have different ideas about its subspecies. This is especially true for trance, as it is probably the most diverse of their genres.
Demographics
Psy-trance is most popular in Western Europe, Scandinavia and Israel, in recent years its popularity has been growing in Japan, Eastern Europe and the CIS, Latin America, Australia, and South Africa. Concerts, including quite large events in clubs (“indoors”) or outdoors (“openairs”), gather hundreds and thousands of people. [1] Events usually take place at night, although there are festivals lasting several days.
The territory of the Khan-Altai trance festival, August 2008
Israeli musicians are by far the world's leading producers of this music, with Astrix being the most typical. In addition to Israeli and Western European projects, bands from such countries as Greece (Wizzy Noise, Ion), Russia (en: Kindzadza, SunRise Brothers, Fungus Funk, Neospherix Pro, G-Light, Transdriver, Z-Cat, Manifold, Sulima, Khooman), Ukraine (en:SynSUN, Zymosis), Serbia (Alternative Control), South Africa (Protoculture, en:Rinkadink), Mexico (Lamat), Brazil (Audio X), etc.
The popular Israeli project Infected Mushroom, as well as the popular British one [2], can also be referred to the psytrance style, although the work of these bands cannot be described as any one particular style.
At the time of its peak, psychedelic trance clips and compositions could be seen and heard on such popular channels and radio stations as MTV, VIVA TV, BBC, etc. Today, by the standards of most music media, the music of this genre is considered irrelevant and almost does not sound on television and radio. This, among other things, is facilitated by numerous references to hallucinogenic drugs, found in one form or another in many albums and compositions. Other popular topics are esotericism, cosmology, consciousness.
Dark in Russia
In Russia, the so-called "full-on" in terms of the level of popularization and the number of fan masses is rapidly approaching. dark psy (“dark trance” or simply “dark”) is an experimental direction of psychedelic trance, the hallmarks of which are gloomy infernal aesthetics in the traditions of hardcore (Hard Core), high BPM (148-170), extremely dense, almost uninterrupted bass line , lack of melodies, as well as saturation with all sorts of effects, noises, samples from horror films and screams. Ideas lying in dark trance combine aspects of psychedelic, using psychedelia as an aesthetic. This can be seen by reading the titles of releases, tracks and their design. Some of the brightest representatives of "dark trance" in Russia are such names as Kindzadza, Psykovsky, Furious, Cpc, Psychorobo25, Jesus Freak, Sunshine, Becar.
Large trance events are necessarily equipped with a “dark dance floor” for especially energetic dances: the dance floor for “ordinary” dances in this case is called “main” (eng. main - “main”). The standard style for the main is supposed to be full-on, but oftentimes DJs on the main, accustomed to intense stimulating rhythms, slide into the same dark, which can be difficult for long-term perception for the full-on fans gathered on the main. Salvation has to be sought in the "chillout" - a zone of relaxing psychedelic music, the absence of which at a normal trance event is considered bad manners.
