How to dance like vanilla ice

I danced with Vanilla Ice

“Last Nite! #SquadGoals #TacoFest2017 #VanillaIce” were a part of HipHopTrooper‘s descriptors which garnered him 1,231 likes on Instagram.

The photo was of him in red Star Wars-esque gear, and his cosplaying-squad dressed as two ninja turtles, Megatron, a shark and Tron. To the millennials, the photo and hashtags were sufficient enough intel.

“Rob [van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice], was very aware of the importance of sharing himself for selfies.”

To some Gen-X-ers though, additional “411” could be added in the caption, like: “I’m cold-chillin’ VIP style on the ‘dl’ (downlow) backstage with the posse,” then followed with a hang-loose emoticon (a la Beavis and Butthead) and further emphasized “funna go up on stage with Vanilla Ice, YEP YEP.”

… in layman’s terms, it should read: At about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday (May 20), Vanilla Ice will perform to a sold-out crowd of 8,500-10,000 fans (per estimate by a San Diego Police Department officer on location) at the Taco Fest 2017 event held at the Waterfront Park located at 1600 Pacific Hwy. I am one of five backup dancers. Pretty cool costumes, eh?

“Rob [van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice], was very aware of the importance of sharing himself [and his dancers] for selfies,” said Sara Bendrick, 32, “he is an icon, whether you like his music or not, [and] you’re going to share a selfie, and spread the word (via social media) if you were lucky enough to get one. Which in turn keeps him in the public eye.”

Bendrick was referring to Vanilla Ice taking many selfie photos and videos with the attendees throughout the night. Many at the show posted their concert experience on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat … and Bendrick’s Instagram selfie with Vanilla garnered about 345 likes. Just like Vanilla, she understands “free promoting” thanks to a smartphone and a free app. She is pushing her own TV show (pilot) in hopes to be aired on the DIY network like The Vanilla Ice Project.

“He was pretty much a master of capturing the event, involving the crowd, asking lots of ladies up on stage to dance and party, and made it a friendly experience for everyone,” said Edward Holland, 51. “After the show it was clear that connecting with the fans by taking a lot of cell phone shots was important to him, and no, I did not take a selfie, but luckily someone took a shot for me.”

Holland does not need to take selfies with Vanilla because he helped in the production of the original “Ice Ice Baby” music video back in 1990. (The music video on YouTube has over 170 million views since it was uploaded in 2009.)

Edward Holland helped in the production of the original “Ice Ice Baby” music video back in 1990.

“… they put him in special clothes, accentuated his hair cut, changed up the dance routines, added a real band,” Holland said, “it was cool to have my first real music video I worked on playing regularly on MTV.”

Marketing and promoting has changed since the days of paper-fliers and mixed-tapes. With technology surpassing the “88 mph” pace of communication; such can be done now in under two minutes with a push of the red button (on a touchscreen), a 140-character post, one finger-swipe intertwined with a finger-squish to copy and paste, followed by the inertia of an index-finger-clicking send.

“My fave part of the Vanilla Ice concert is when he brings fans and friends together on stage to kick off the dance party,” said Emily Hoppe. She was one of the 30 or so people that got to dance on stage after Vanilla performed “Play that Funky Music (white boy)” — she too shot a video and took a selfie with him. “Brand awareness via social media has exploded, and if you haven’t hopped on the train you’re missing out!”

Vanilla Ice, 49, has about 158K (K=1,000) followers on Instagram, 491K on Twitter, and 161,000 on Facebook.

“To concert promoters,” said one fan (waiting in line for an autograph), “that’s golden.” He explained that if a celebrity is engaging with his/her enormous social media following, it takes less money and time to promote an event if they are headlining and promoting such on their feeds. Furthermore, “if their entourage has a following (like HipHopTrooper’s 88K on IG), that is a bonus, and not to mention the oodles of selfie shots with fans from previous concerts and then their followers; it’s a digital-snowball effect.

As Vanilla Ice’s promotion strategy has changed, so has his look. This night he was wearing construction boots, a fitted baseball cap, and a shirt that read “I Vote for Beer.”

Holland added that Vanilla Ice was able to capitalize on another smartphone-phenomenon. “… the song (Ice Ice Baby), still charts (on Billboard) today as a ringtone.”

Vanilla also performed “Go Ninja, Go Ninja GO!,” “Pony,” “Ninja Rap 2.” and “No Woman No Cry,” which he dedicated to the U.S. soldiers.

WELLINGTON, Fla. — They danced their way from the cafeteria into our hearts, and on Wednesday, they got a big surprise!

WPTV first introduced you to the "Lunch Lady Squad" at Wellington Landings Middle School last month after their TikTok videos went viral and helped build bridges with students.

The "Lunch Lady Squad" thought they were walking into a celebration in the cafeteria on Wednesday.

The music cranked up, the dance moves came out, and then Vanilla Ice himself surprised them all.

"Hey, we got a party in the lunch room!" the rapper exclaimed.

Then came hugs, smiles, autographs, pictures, and a lot of "Ice Ice Baby."

"I told my co-worker I was about to pass out," said Barbara Rolle, a food service worker at Wellington Landings Middle School.

"I had no clue. No clue at all. None of us knew," said cafeteria manager Cori Kerezman. "It was so cool. That was just amazing. It was good. A good feeling."

The rapper, who lives in Wellington, saw the ladies dancing to his song on TikTok. So he came to join the party Wednesday and show some appreciation for the "Lunch Lady Squad," who does a lot more than serve food.

"They are creating this environment and that goes to show you they work hard," Vanilla Ice said. "They're great, you know? They inspire these kids. Put a little dancing and music on and it just lightens up the whole day."

The ladies have really felt the love these past few weeks since WPTV first shared their story in late April.

"It's been amazing. It's been crazy," Kerezman said. "We go to the store and people are like, hey, aren't you the person on those TikToks? The lunch ladies? And we're like, yeah!"

And for them, that's what this is really all about, the relationships created through a few music videos.

"I'm speechless for what it's done," Kerezman said.

Of course, Wednesday's celebrity visit couldn't end without a new TikTok video, where else but the freezer.

"That was the first time I ever sang 'Ice Ice Baby' in a freezer," Vanilla Ice said. "I hope it's not the last. It was actually fun."

"'Ice Ice Baby.' I enjoyed it, having him in there with us and doing it," Rolle said. "He can come back again."

But until then, they'll connect over the music.

"You can't pick your fans. They pick you," Vanilla Ice said. "So the fact that they are still dancing to 'Ice Ice Baby' is just amazing. So I'm going to dance right with them."

Nightlife: Vanilla Ninja | Posta-Magazine

Many people like to complain that good clubs in Moscow can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Posta da VIP Nightlife columnist Yulia Lapina is sure of the opposite and every week she talks about the most unusual and interesting parties in Moscow. The first report is from one of the most closed clubs in the capital, Vanilla Ninja.

When clubbing and dancing are your
profession, it's rare to go out and
hang out on your own.

For this, the place should be super cozy, cheerful, with music taking
into space. For me, this place has long been a club with a very
original name "Vanilla Ninja".

One of its founders, Seva Shcherbakov, known for the projects "First", "Famous", "Tommy D", once told me that such a strange name was born in his head during a trip to New York. YORKE: "The atmosphere of constant celebration and healthy creative frenzy of this city gave such an unexpected impromptu."

VN has existed for several years, but only recently moved to a new location on Rochdelskaya Street and opened its doors to guests not only on Thursdays, as before, but also on Fridays.

At the face control, we are met by the permanent Sasha Moiseenkov, a former buyer of the Podium store and the creator of the 3/14 branded showroom. "Vanilla Ninja" does not give advertising and does not strive for an abundance of guests - it is focused more on "their own" - people who think, as Sasha put it, "in the style of art." These are people about 30 years old, who can be both businessmen, artists, musicians, and just party-goers, but all of them are united by originality and subtlety of taste, love for quality music, unconventional views and even appearance. Moreover, “on Thursday the parties are more closed, with an established audience. On this day, getting into the club is much more difficult.” Regular and beloved guests of the club have weighty metal cards, and now cards are being prepared especially for Fridays - silicone, neon blue, reflecting the mood of Friday parties!

There are also small lists, where again they get on the recommendation of regular guests, but basically only girls appear there. Of course, there is always a chance to get into VN, even if you don't know anyone here yet.

"If a person looks great and radiates positive, then he can pass!" Sasha says.

By the way, when going to VN, you can be absolutely creative in choosing an outfit, which for me personally distinguishes the club from all the others. Here you can see luxurious floor-length dresses and business suits, modest jeans with black T-shirts and semi-sporty-half-freak looks, stilettos and sneakers - all this is intertwined into a single art mix, transferring you to some kind of rabbit hole of a wonderland where everything is possible.

Entering Ninju, you feel like you are in a circle of friends from the very beginning. Sasha on face control urges us and the film crew to go inside and not freeze in the rain. Waiters and bartenders dance merrily, the music instantly relaxes, even strangers become "their own" very quickly. It is difficult to remember at the same time that today we are here for work. The interior of "Ninja" is the same as its name - more associative than logical. Elements of luxury are combined with pages of yellowed newspapers pasted on the walls, plastic is combined with stone, neon light is combined with pipes running along the ceiling, reminiscent of a thermal power plant, metal grills are lit by strange lamps, similar to living creatures from the Critters movie. ..

With some difficulty I squeeze through to the bar (two in the morning — the beginning of the so-called prime time — that is, the maximum concentration of guests), order a glass of champagne. To the honor of the institution, it must be said that the prices in the bar surprise with their democratic nature. Nude (completely!) girls walk along the balconies of the second floor, burdening their nakedness with only accessories and open robes. They do not seem to pay attention to the guests, living their lives, there is no light accent on them, they do not dance, and many guests may not even notice their presence.

“This is by no means a go-go dance, this is a certain intrigue that gives some spice and tension in the good sense of the word,” my interlocutor explains.

Ninja is one of the rarest places in Moscow where people dance rather than hang out. And no one will judge you for ineptness of movements - this is not a place of "glamorous pickup" where it is important to impress. Everyone comes to relax and share positive energy. It's a pity, but the flash of our photographer instantly disperses the guests dancing around me... Photo reports are not welcome in VN, because many guests are public people and come here to relax, and not to get into the gossip column.

We turn off the camera and go out to the general dance-positive wave ... I would like to describe the music - but any genre names will spoil your impression. It is like a beating of the heart - it penetrates from the inside, but at the same time it does not hit the eardrums. VN takes the DJ staff very seriously: it is important to be not just a universally recognized star, but also to carry an energy message and feel the atmosphere of this unusual place.

Club residents are Dj Mus, U-Are, Pushkin, Vinokurova. Almost every weekend VN brings interesting foreign musicians.

Dj Mus, who is also one of the founders of the club, told me that the club finds such DJs thanks to new communication technologies. “We have a secret radio station that constantly plays mixes of foreign DJs. We don't like "names" - we love the music the musicians play."

"Ninja" heard sets of such DJs as Solomun, Sis, Mandy, Shonky, Nima Gorji, Piemont. Personally, the recently arrived Christian Viviano especially sunk into my soul.

The party is growing, more and more people are on the dance floor. No one is in a hurry to leave, although the time is about five in the morning. Seva Shcherbakov: “The secret of VN’s success is a well-chosen team of like-minded people — stylish, successful young people who have earned names for themselves in various areas of life, and the club is the main passion in professional life for everyone. All of Moscow knows these people.”

The people are gradually starting to leave, and so are we. The last hour, however, passes in mutual decisions "here's another five minutes - and that's it, let's go!" It's always like this - you're going to stop by for a short while, and "Vanilla Ninja" just won't let you out of its hypnotic embrace. .. I'll subscribe to Seva's words that "the soul of this club has high charisma and attraction power." And this, perhaps, is its main difference from all the others.

Wake up. And I remember the golden rule in Moscow:

“If you have an appointment for Friday morning,
don’t go to Vanilla Ninja on Thursday.”
