Bravo and noble - mcuntzy we... — LiveJournal

Seville is an uncompromising city: plenty of sun, harsh shadows, rich gardens, evocative luxury of the Andalusian baroque ("If you prefer minimalism, Seville is not your city," - usually sentences our friend José, Sevillan, historian and part-time guide). Here the most unbearable summer heat, the most exalted Holy Week processions, and the most sensitive aficionados gather in the local bullring.

Waving a white handkerchief, fans demand an award for the matador

Bullfighting is a trick, a bunch, the quintessence of a holiday that includes a lot of drinking, songs, dancing and (ouch!) love in all its carnal manifestations.

When I say booze, just imagine the old bodegas in the Triana and Arenal quarters, where bull heads hang on the walls - old trophies from the 60s and 70s, dusty bottles of sherry, olives the size of a baby's fist, yellowed photographs of Manolete on the walls , ads "you can smoke here (and your health is your own business)", an old swarthy bartender behind the counter and not a single empty seat.

By the evening of the weekend, all this human sea thickens around Maestranza.

              Curro Romero, the great

              venta

              paso doble

Yesterday we watched the first bullfight - the so-called "mano a mano", when two matadors compete in skill with each other.

              Sebastien Castella

              Morante de la Puebla

              Spectators:

Anticipation: cigar and rebujito, sherry with soda.

              Bull

              Estocada

And today we are sitting with Alfredo Covilha at a round table, on which there are three glasses of sherry and a plate with refreshments covered with a napkin. Alfredo is a matador. We are discussing the eternal question, which is higher in status - Moscow or Peter Seville Maestranza or Madrid Las Ventas.

One successful evening in Madrid on Las Ventas can solve all financial problems. No one can assemble a full arena in Barcelona, except for Jose Thomas *, but he is one of them.

*They say matador José Tomas is a numero uno, first among equals, or "second Manolete", which is no less honorable. But I didn't see him in action.

Yes, Alfredo agrees, but the arena in Seville is special, it gives a name and recognition. He says that in Seville there is more feeling, more understanding, more of that special spirit, after all, which arises from the combination of the sun, stoicism and adrenaline. in Seville it is more difficult to leave the arena through the main gate (this is the highest prize for a successful matador. In Madrid, for this you need to get only two trophies, in Seville - as many as three).

Daniel Luque, the best matador of Seville

And here I am ripe to write that I enjoy bullfighting. Without hypocritical apologies and without embarrassment. I don't think that love of bullfighting makes me cruel. On the platform of the arena, I do not bleed sadly about the fate of the animal - the sensations of bullfighting are much deeper and more authentic than those that give me any of the civilized entertainments available to me (except, perhaps, the men's relay race).
Except that bullfighting is not entertainment. Or, well, not only entertainment. It's a drama, sometimes a real tragedy.

              Antonio Ferrera

The Catalan poet Pere Himferer aptly called bullfighting "a visual poem in progress". A big atavistic ballet, a lot of poetry and plasticity, quickened pulse, purity of lines, blood and sand, a barbaric combination of red on gold. Fear of human death (unlikely in the era of emergency care, but still possible) and the thrill of avoiding it.

But having once visited the arena where the bull is killed, I wanted to be where they live. Andalusia is the perfect place for this. The Seville arena, like a heart in the circulatory system, is connected with dozens of ganaderias - estates where the toro de lidia, the Iberian fighting bull, grazes on free bread, but under vigilant supervision.

Ruta de toros, the “road of the bulls” is the main road that connects Seville with Cadiz, and goes through the “bull country” with an epic Andalusian moonscape, the geometry of olive groves (“the olive plain opens the fan, wraps the fan”, as our Garcia Lorca wrote to Federico). Herds of bulls graze here, chosen among them four years after birth will be selected for the arena.

Finca, or a farm 40 kilometers southwest of Seville, where we are heading, is called La Calera. It's mostly a closed world.

The main house of the rural estate is simple but elegant. Powerful stones, wall-to-wall bougainvilleas, orange trees at the gate. The Great Hall is decorated, among other things, with old magazine clippings, and two bull heads with brass plaques explaining where, when and by whom he was killed. This is how the bulls get their posthumous glory.

Alfredo arrives, a young man in a checkered cap and a traje corto, an Andalusian rural costume, matadors usually perform in them at village ferias, where a ceremonial, gold-embroidered “suit of light” is not required.

Matador Alfredo Covilha is a very remarkable character, and not only with his unexpectedly blond hair. By the way, his “professional” nickname, stage name is a match for him: El Rubio de San Diego - “Blond from San Diego”.

He's as long as a ramrod, a little taller than he should be (tall ones aren't as flexible - look at basketball centers). Despite serious endurance training, matadors do not look like beefy gymnasts. It is still impossible to surpass the bull by force. But on the other hand, the training of a matador is similar to the training of the Olympians. It is very difficult, not having enough physical strength, to work with a 4-5-kilogram capote raincoat, to maintain maximum concentration for the entire 20-30 minutes of the battle. The slightest loss of concentration, a veil before the eyes - and the bull will not wait until the matador takes a breath.

Something becomes clear upon meeting: Alfredo is Colombian, from a respectable family, and he simply fulfilled his desire to perform in the arena: he ran away from home across the ocean. In Spain, he acquired a four-month-old baby, pierced by a bull's horn, lungs and ambitions. In the fall, when the season ends here, all the main stars depart on tour to Latin America. Then the hour of Alfredo comes - on his native continent he gets into the same cartel (poster) with celebrities. Here he performed last season with Antonio Ferrera: but just yesterday, Ferrera cut off the ear of the bull on Maestranza to the applause of the public, and Alfredo heals the wound, trains and leads the guests through the ganaderia.

Alfredo, like many young matadors, works both on the farm and in the arena. Each Finnish arena has its own arena. A selection is carried out here - no, not bulls - cows. At least 70% of fighting qualities are transferred from a vigorous cow to a future fighting bull.

In the arena, the bull and the matador are partners. The spectators evaluate the dignity of the bull no less strictly than the skill of the matador. But if the carcass of a killed bull is escorted with a whistle (he turned out to be lazy or cowardly) - this is a shame, first of all, for the breeder, he loses prestige and money.

"The farm's business is olive and cork trees and also hunting," says Covilla. "The bulls are a tribute to tradition and prestige." property boundaries. Nothing should humble their aggressive nature. Young three-year-old bulls, called novillos, often fight among themselves, older animals (bulls enter the arena at four years old) are more sedate and solitary.

Up close, the fighting bull looks like an armored train lurking in the thickets.

              Novillos

              Cheerful Cow

When we enter the arena of the estate, I remember the first bullfight I saw, and I tell Alfredo how impressed I was with miuras - a special breed of "heavy" 700-kilogram bulls, characterized by ferocity. Real hellish creatures. Alfredo, who has been rather reserved up until now, is transformed. Miura, he says, and makes a scary face. - He runs out into the arena, fire from his eyes, smoke from his ears, digs the sand of the arena with his hoof. Eyes bulging, breathing heavy. You stand in front of him, and he circles your eyes like this, from bottom to top, they say, who else is this? And you do not have time to straighten the hood - rushes with horns at the ready.

Alfredo shows how to handle the muleta and the capote

the owner's niece cleans up the puppies that have fallen asleep under the bonnet

The bull is not afraid of anyone. Except those little Andalusian dogs.

Even among bullfighting stars, very few go out to fight "heavy" bulls. Such matadors are called "gladiators" and are known by name. There are fighters and there are artists, Alfredo explains. There are those who show skill and even elegance. And there are those who have a desperate contempt for danger. Each is an individual.

There are about 600 bulls on the farm (and about 180 cows), but only a few of them received indulto - forgiveness in the arena. Such bulls, just a few of the thousands - who have demonstrated fighting spirit and nobility, can be given life and returned to the ganaderia. There the wounds of the "forgiven" bull will be healed and made a producer. The rest of his life, and this is another 20 years, he will spend as a nabob, in the hall, satiety, with a harem of 40 cows. Their offspring, the breeder hopes, will embody ferocity, agility and strength.

Are hopes justified? - ask Alfredo. A bull is like a melon, he shrugs. Until you cut it, you won't understand.

              Alejandro Talavante

Indulto bulls are never allowed to enter the arena again. The bull is an intelligent animal. There is something about his character that makes him very special. It is no coincidence that the fight is strictly limited to 20 minutes - after that the bull already unravels all the tricks of the matador and becomes mortally dangerous for a person.

The bull must be bravo and noble. Bold and noble. About courage - everything seems to be clear. The nobility of the bull requires explanation. This is not exactly a breed, although the physical characteristics of a bull are always highly valued. This is a fighting impulse, an attack in the open. It is a special gift to be paired with a matador, to respond to his actions. Help him to show the best performance. The bull must fight from the first third to the final faena. He does not need to be forced to do this, aggression is in his blood.

We all killed a mosquito at least once in our lives. And this is the whole difference: everyone chooses an opponent for himself. Who is a mosquito, and who is a fighting bull - an aggressive 600-kilogram projectile. I can only accept bullfighting attacks from vegans who think lentil soup and budding will save the world. In everything else, where there is blood, there is both life and death, the death of a bull killed with a sword in a duel.

My world is anthropocentric. For those who are trying to humanize the bull in order to share his pain, I can only suggest that it is the other way around: not the bull is a man, but you are the bull. Suppose you are given a choice: to live knee-deep in manure for 35 years, eat silage (which can be equated with prison gruel), and finally, standing in line for slaughter, die at the hands of some laborer of a meat packing plant in a rubberized uniform. Or live freely on hundreds of hectares of land, among their own kind, and having come into force, spend an evening in the arena against a little Spaniard in pink stockings.

              (c) Aitor Lara

"Corrida is not a fight. Bullfighting is a dance," explains Alfredo. bull. It is the triumph of life over death."
