Popping and Boogaloo. Dance school Triumph in St. Petersburg.
+7(812)956-65-49
St. Petersburg 7th Sovetskaya 16
m. In the early 1960s Boogaloo (this is an improvisation of hips and steps) appeared in New York, among Cuban and Puerto Rican teenagers, in the Spanish slum areas of Harlem (New York City). The style has become a mixture of African-American R `n` B, some rock and roll movements (hence the name of the characteristic circular movement of the legs - roll), soul, mambo and the so-called son montano (son montuno) - improvised body movements with frequent inhales and exhales.
Gradually Boogaloo or Boog Style, dancers start to dance in the streets, and little by little, the style moves from the ghetto to the central streets of the big cities of the East Coast. Dancers appear, performing not just variations on Latin themes, but directly this style, the first creatives.
Boogaloo is, on the one hand, a calm and measured dance, and on the other hand, such a hidden power, a desire to break out of the limits of movements, should be felt in the manner of performance. The Boogaloo dancer must always leave some sense of incompleteness from his dance, understatement. They danced Boogaloo to funk with a moderate rhythm, not too dynamic, but always with an unpredictable melody. The rhythm, as a rule, was two-beat (strong blow - on beat and weak - off beat).
Despite what many consider Boogaloo Sam to be the originator of the Boogaloo style, he didn't actually establish Boogaloo's base, he just singled it out as a Latin street sub-style and made it more oriented towards LA funk culture. However, Sam is the founder of the Electric Boogaloo style. The base (softness of movements, improvisation with hips and steps) remained in Electric Boogaloo from the original style.
Boogaloo is considered the so-called "fluid" style. Ideally, the dancer should create the illusion of an absolutely unbreakable "fluid" transition from one part of the body to another. It is very important to involve all parts of the body.
The most important movements are:
- Rolls of the hips
- Rolls of the knees
- Walkouts
The hallmark of Boogaloo is that it is a very "wide dance". You should try to dance on a large scale, taking up as much space as possible and not limiting yourself to being at one point. To dance Boogaloo, you have to move, constantly move from place to place in space. To create, as it were, a "stretching effect" of space, by the illusion of "stretching one's body" (most often, either the lower part of the body lags behind the upper one, or vice versa).
The so-called tricks (chips) are various intricate and sometimes seemingly strange foot movements, sometimes completely illogical from the point of view of the dance. Therein lies the charm. According to Boogaloo Sam, a real trick is only when it is completely improvised and made unexpectedly even for the dancer himself.
POPPING is another style created by Sam Boogaloo. It includes such movements as: kicking the knees back (forward), fixing the muscles, prolonged contraction of the muscles, which gives a snapping effect. Its name comes from the fact that Sam, fixing the muscles, says "pop", "pop", "pop".

Blog Dancing group lessons Plaza
Bachata is a beautiful and sensual dance that originated in the distant Dominican Republic. If you have not been to a bachata class at Magis Sport PLAZA yet, our video blog will help you master the basics of style and feel confident both in class and at parties!
Bachata is one of the most popular and vibrant Latin American dance styles. Bachata is the smoothness of movements, flexibility and plasticity of bodies, tenderness and passion... Dance develops artistry, grace and flexibility, along with the beauty and harmony of the whole body. Basically, bachata is danced in pairs, but there is also a dance without a partner. It is this dance that we dance at the bachata group programs at the Magis Sport club.
The basic foundations of this style, knowing which you can improvise and learn choreography of medium complexity, we will analyze in this video blog.
Polina Denisova Magis Sport PLAZA club coach
BACHATA BASIC STEP: CHASSE
The basic step in bachata “right-left” is performed on slightly bent legs. The movement comes from the hips on the principle of a pendulum. We move gently and smoothly, to the right - to the left. Taking a basic step to the right, you substitute your left foot to your right foot. They stepped, swung their hips to the right and left. This is the basic step that distinguishes bachata from other dance styles.
FORWARD-BACK STEP
When you step forward, your hips work in a figure-eight pattern. Take a step forward and take your hip back in a semicircle. When completing the forward movement, before starting to move back, the hip sways to the right or left, as in the main step. All movements are performed on soft, slightly bent legs.
BASIC RIGHT-LEFT MOVEMENT WITH HANDS
Perform the basic bachata step right and left one step at a time. The first four steps gently raise slightly bent arms up, the second four steps lower down "by yourself".
BASIC TURN IN BACHAT
The basic turn in bachata is done as follows: take a step to the right with a turn around you, then return to the left with two chasses, that is, the main step.
ASSEMBLE A DANCE BREAK ON THE BASIS OF THE BASIC ELEMENTS
Now, having mastered the four basic movements of bachata, you can assemble them into a small dance sequence! Change the movement every eight counts: chassé (basic step) right and left, step back and forth, step right and left with arms raised, and two basic turns.
IMPROVIZATION: FEEL THE RHYTHM OF THE DANCE!
Now, using the basic bachata movements, try to improvise. Turn on the music, relax and just enjoy the feeling of dancing to the beat of bachata! Add arm movements to the tempo, leg lifts, expand the space you use in the dance.
Take a few lessons on mastering this dance style and you will become the queen of any party!
Don't miss the group bachata lesson at Magis Sport PLAZA!
Every Thursday 18:30, Hall 42
