How to dance at a country club
Country Night Club Two-Step For Beginners
There are two versions of night club two-step; ballroom and country. Both dances are beautiful with a romantic feel and are danced to love ballads. In today’s post, I’m going to get you started with the Country Night Club Two-Step.

History and Characteristics
Night club two-step was created by Buddy Schwimmer to fill a void in the club scene in the early ’60s. Besides hugging and swaying with your honey when slow songs came on, there were no specific dance dancers could do, so Buddy developed the Nightclub Two Step. Later, The Country-Western organization adopted this dance as a smooth style in the competitive circuit ( UCWDC ) and made some slight changes along the way. Country Night Club is characterized by its romantic feel, gliding movements, and slight sway. Unlike other “Smooth Style” dances, it does not travel around the floor in the Line of Dance, but it does cover some ground.
Night Club Two-Step is written in 4/4 time, which means there are 4 quarter notes within a bar of music. A bar is synonymous with measure and it’s a rhythmical grouping set off in written music by a vertical barline. What that means for us dancers, is that we will count to either 4 or 8 when creating choreography or counting patterns to help us stay on time and in the phrase. Country Night Club Two-Step music is danced to slow romantic country songs and ranges between 58-62 beats per minute (BPM). There are two ways you can count this dance: SQQ SQQ or 1 2& 3 4&. Essentially, the first step (slow count) uses one beat of the music and the second two beats or quick counts use half a beat each. Therefore, the beat value is 1 ½ ½. The 1 and 3 are the downbeats and as dancers need to accent these beats throughout. I will go more into detail with how to do this in the next section when I break down the Basic Step.
Now that you have a better understanding of where this dance came from and what type of music it’s danced to, let’s get into the fun dancing part! First, I’ll break down where your feet should go, then I will give you a couple of technical tips that with practice, will make your dancing beautiful and look effortless.
Leaders: Begin with your weight on your left foot with your right foot pointed to the side without weight. Your basic foot positions are as follows: Step to the side with your right foot, step back with your left foot (toe to heel – small step), step forward and across with your right foot. Now, repeat on the other side. Once you do this on both sides, you have completed a full basic.
Followers: Begin with your weight on your right foot with your left foot pointed to the side without weight. Your basic foot positions are as follows: Step to the side with your left foot, step back with your right foot (toe to heel – small step), step forward and across with your left foot. Now, repeat on the other side. Once you do this on both sides, you have completed a full basic.

The first technical tip I want to cover is proper footwork. Footwork refers to the part of your foot that is in contact with the floor. The main footwork in this dance is ball flat. This means your weight begins at the front of the foot and rolls to the whole foot on each step your take. As in most dances, your feet always remain in contact with the floor unless you are doing some type of embellishment. So, if you slide your feet into position on each step, chances are you will be doing the proper footwork for this dance 😊
Here’s a video of the footwork: https://www. facebook.com/665881863801998/videos/786151398615708
The second technical tip I want to cover is sway. Sway is also one of the characteristics of this dance, so it’s important to add this to your basic step! Sway happens as a result of swing. When your foot and hip move out to the side, your body will slightly incline in the other direction creating a counterbalance, known as sway. You will use this action on the 1 and 3 counts (slows). I know this may be a little confusing in writing, so check out this video for a visual: https://www.facebook.com/665881863801998/videos/878140719335061
Now that we have covered the Basic Step and a couple of technical tips to get it feeling good and moving smoothly, let’s move onto the dance frame and dancing this with a partner.
The first step to dancing with a partner is learning how to hold your partner. One of the most important parts of partner dancing is holding and maintaining a good frame – frame meaning, your arms. This is what connects you to one another and through a good frame and connection, makes it possible to lead and follow. Are you ready to give it a try?
To take a closed position hold, begin by standing just under a foot apart from each other. If you are leading, extend your left arm and hand towards your partner to invite them into your frame. Followers will respond by placing their right hand in the leader’s left while holding their left arm out to the side. Once this connection happens, leaders should bring their left elbow back slightly so that the elbow is in line with their shoulder with the elbow pointed slightly down. The leader’s right hand will connect on the follower’s left shoulder blade with the elbow out wide and lifted. The follower will rest her hand gently on the crease of the leader’s bicep while keeping a light and responsive frame. Lastly, the follower needs to maintain a slight off-set position to the leader’s right side so that she can maintain a good connection into his hand. Both partner’s need to maintain tone in their arms so that they don’t collapse in towards each other and always remember to move from your center – not your arms.
To put everything together, throw on that song I mentioned earlier, take your partner, and dance the Basic.

There is so much more you can learn with this dance, and I hope that you are inspired to continue learning after reading this. As always, keep practicing and growing. I hope you enjoyed today’s post and have a great rest of your day 😊

I can't live without applause
We knew about such shows in restaurants in the late 80s only from foreign films and magazines. Domestic "Little Vera" collected full cinema halls: in this film, a piece of a naked female body was "lit up". The people wanted spectacle!
In 1988, the first groups of so-called aerobics and sports dance were opened in the BOKMO sports complex under the direction of Marina Zharova. The girls went in for sports, choreography, in a word, they took care of the youth of the body. Marina Zharova selected six of the forty girls and began working on dance numbers for the variety show.
In 1989 the restaurant "Norilsk" was preparing a show program of six dance numbers. From the composition of the first variety show in Norilsk, only one participant remained - Irina Gladkikh.
- I started dancing at the age of 21. She was already married, her daughter was three years old. I have never done choreography before. I am a piano teacher by education. Our first dance numbers were in folk and pop style. Only costumes were made stylized, more open, for example, for Georgian dance. The group worked in Norilsk for a year and received an offer to perform abroad.
- In which country?
- In Hungary. During the entire existence of our variety show, we went to Hungary three times. In the winter we worked in Norilsk, preparing a new program, and in the summer we left together with our leader Marina Zharova. By the way, she also danced, and the famous Norilsk choreographer Alexander Povolotsky made choreographic performances.
The Hungarian public at that time was very different from the Norilsk public. But now the Norilsk people have become more relaxed and friendly. And at 19In 1989, we were treated like exotic animals in a zoo.
The pay in Hungary was higher and we were also paid in dollars. And it was profitable to go there on tour.
- How did families react to this business?
- Like any family - in different ways. Both married women and free women danced in the group. Then one girl got married, another. .. Husbands forbade someone to dance. The composition began to change and the team broke up.
- Your dance career continued in the night club "Old City". How did you get there?
- When I returned from my last trip abroad, I was invited to work by Alexander Povolotsky. In the "Old Town" other girls have been dancing for a couple of months.
- There was no topless and striptease show in the Norilsk restaurant...
- No. We danced the traditional "Can-Can", probably the first one in Norilsk. They tried to do erotic numbers, with beautiful movements, but did not undress.
- Was it difficult to decide to undress on stage?
- When I went to dance in a country club, as the owner, Valentina Ilyicheva, called it, I already knew for sure that a striptease was needed there. But the first time I had to undress a little earlier. This was my last trip to Hungary. We received a suggestion from our manager that we include in the program one number with full undressing. Moreover, the striptease should be beautifully staged in terms of choreography. It was easy or hard to undress for the first time, I don’t remember exactly. In fact, everything happened much easier. We got together as a team, discussed the options, and everyone voted for me. I had to undress. Why they chose me, I don't know. But our leader said that I am the sexiest girl.
- Is it difficult to be completely naked in front of an audience? Scary?..
- Emotionally very difficult. There is a struggle between my life principles and, as they will now say, the requirements of the employer. Dancing is my job. Moreover, the team nominated me, they hoped for me. And at the same time, I could refuse this number. But first we talked everything over with the husbands. The husbands of two dancers were categorically against it.
- Did yours agree?
- My husband was quite loyal to this. I can say more - he even liked this idea. He was proud that his wife was looked at with such a sigh, but for all other men I am inaccessible.
- Let's go back to Valentina's. What performances were there?
- The program was erotic, undressing - in every room. They were both serious and funny. Group and solo. Our choreographer called the solo numbers "striptease monologues".
- How did the Norilsk public of 1992 react to striptease?
- Watched with delight, all attention was focused on the stage. I think the audience liked it. Flowers were given, fans appeared, there were declarations of love. Probably, girls-dancers will always have flowers and fans.
- Thirteen years have passed... Has striptease changed since then?
- Of course! Judging by the performances that were "at Valentina's", we can say that striptease has become very simple now. Why? Previously, it was not only necessary to go out and undress. These were well-thought-out and well-tried choreographic compositions, plot and logical performances. And even if I danced alone, I knew who I was: a flower girl, a waitress. .. What character I portray, what mood I convey. Now everything has been simplified. Girls go on stage in anything, even in underwear, but with a specific task: to undress. And how it will look, is no longer important.
- Do you think this is "Western influence" or a decline in choreography?
- Western influence, I think. A lot of video cassettes, films, and any other information appeared. The girls realized that they didn’t have to work hard. How it looked on the video: allegedly a stripper came out, kicked her legs, undressed and left the stage. Then there was a fashion to dance with a pylon (pole). And, anyway, it turns out undressing for the sake of undressing. This is much easier than dancing a "monologue" in which the image is embedded.
- What data does a stripper need?
- She must be able to hold herself in any situation. Not everyone is able to present themselves beautifully, show their beauty and other virtues.
- Is a strong choreographic training necessary, or is it enough to have a beautiful body?
- Of course, the figure must be beautiful. But such qualities as courage and desire are also important. To dance a striptease, you must love to show yourself. What the stripper does, she should like herself. And over time, the dancer herself understands what she lacks: stretching, classical choreography or plasticity.
- Have people on the street ever recognized you and pointed or shouted hurtful words?
- It happened, and more than once. For some reason, many people treat dancers, especially strippers, as fallen women. True, there were such situations: a person thinks nasty things about me, and after meeting he drastically changes his idea of \u200b\u200bme. And he even regrets that he thought badly. At first, I tried to explain to people, even to prove that strippers are decent women. It's just our job. And over time I realized that it is useless to prove. A smart person is unlikely to get dirty thoughts into his head, but it is useless to explain to a stupid person.
- What is the optimal age for a stripper?
- She must not be very young. I judge by myself: now, at thirty-seven years old, I dance much better, more erotic and more professional than ten years ago. Now I know that I can present myself much more interestingly. Most importantly, a woman should be able to maintain her body and appearance so that she can easily undress after thirty, and when you are over thirty-five. If a woman succeeds, then with age she becomes more spectacular.
- How does your daughter feel about your profession?
- She didn't know what I was doing for a very long time. Mom works in a restaurant, but who is not so important. I tried to protect her from such information in childhood. And when my daughter got older - she was fifteen years old - I was able to correctly explain to her what I was doing. I don't think she was shocked by this discovery. Now there is so much information available on TV and in magazines that it is hard to surprise our children with something. And, having visited rehearsals, my daughter began to treat my work normally.
- In your professional opinion, is there a decent show in Norilsk?
- No. There were pylons and girls who learned to work on them. By the way, not everyone who works on a pole can dance the numbers set by the choreographer. A normal show is expensive. Not every owner of a nightclub or restaurant can afford it. Good, bright costumes are very expensive. Feathers, rhinestones, fabrics, especially tailoring - not everyone can afford. For a good show, you need a team of at least six or seven people. They also have to pay.
- Who did you enjoy portraying the most on stage?
- I have always been attracted to images of hard, with a whip, with a belt. But this is not my inner image. I am tender and soft. And I can’t do something aggressive, which is probably why such images are especially attractive to me.
- When do you plan to end your career as a stripper?
- I'm not ready to answer yet. There is a fear of leaving the stage. Every creative person has it. It is very difficult to refuse applause, enthusiastic looks, compliments...
- And yet, what would you like to do?
- Perhaps by creating the same dance shows. I have little experience, and I would be interested in it, and closer to the soul. But for now, when I think about the future, I don't have anything specific in mind.
- Have you done something in your work yet, have you not achieved something?
- Like any creative person, I strive for the ideal. I have not yet danced such a number that would be remembered for years. And then they said: "Do you remember how Irina Gladkikh performed this dance?"
During the thirteen years of her dancing career, Irina has performed in almost all restaurants in the Greater Norilsk. Now you can look at this charming woman and admire her art in the Sochi restaurant.
