Val Chmerkovskiy and his partner, Gabby Windey, got lots of love during the Dancing With the Stars season premiere. The 36-year-old longtime dance pro and the 31-year-old Bachelorette alum were cheered on by Val's pregnant wife, Jenna Johnson, and Gabby's Bachelorette co-star, Rachel Recchia, in the audience.

"That’s the game changer, you know, when you get married that becomes a part of your life, and having Jenna by my side --and Jenna loves Gabby the way she loves Gabby," Val tells ET's Matt Cohen after their performance.

"We love each other, me and Jenna," Gabby agrees. "I wish we could be partners."

The support from the fellow dance pro means that the reality TV contestant is getting some bonus help in the ballroom.

"She says she has two pros, two coaches, two teammates, so to have a wife that’s this supportive at this time in our life," Val explains of Jenna. "You know, she’s pregnant. We're expecting a child. Grateful is a word that gets said a lot, but I’m genuinely -- after the last three years of my life personally and generally for everyone -- I'm beyond thankful for what I get to experience. "

Val and Gabby impressed the judges with their jive to Harry Styles' hit, "As It Was," on premiere night.

"I think we feel good. I don't know, happy to be here, obviously... I have a really great teacher and partner," Gabby gushes to ET of working with Val.

Val adds, "I’m excited to be part of this show, you know? I've been on this show for 12 years now and I’m excited to have a partner and that gives me a chance to dance and gives me a chance to go all the way. I really believe in this partnership. I’m grateful for her work ethic, her attitude, and her fan base."

"Mostly the fan base," Gabby jokes.

Val and Jenna announced they were expecting their first child together back in July. They later revealed they were having a baby boy.

Jenna previously told ET's Kevin Frazier that she had wanted to return to the ballroom while pregnant.

"Here's the weird thing, since being pregnant, I've felt more inspired than ever, but I think once the fall comes around I'll be pretty far along, so, I think safety-wise, it's best I don't," she said at the time. "But my mind is like, 'Oh yeah I could do it.'"

A Timeline of Their Romance

From the dance floor to “I do!” Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy started out as colleagues on Dancing With the Stars and ended up as a happily married couple in real life.

The pair first crossed paths in 2014 when the So You Think You Can Dance alum became a DWTS troupe member. Chmerkovskiy had already been competing as a pro on the ABC competition series since season 13, which premiered in 2011. They were friends at first but took their relationship to the next level and started dating in 2015.

Johnson and Chmerkovskiy dated quietly for a few months, but eventually called it quits. The European dancer briefly moved on with season 23 DWTS contestant Amber Rose, but he and Johnson found their way back to each other in the end. In June 2018, Chmerkovskiy got down on one knee during a romantic trip to Italy.

“I knew Jenna was the one when I saw how close she is with her family and how she interacts with her nieces and nephews,” Chmerkovskiy told Us Weekly exclusively days after he popped the question. “Family is everything to me and I can’t wait for us to build one together.”

Johnson, for her part, told Us that a romance with Chmerkovskiy was almost unavoidable. She noted in November 2018, “There’s something about the show, man. You’re so hands on. … Dance is very physical.”

She also said she understood why many DWTS pros, such as Alan Bersten and Artem Chigvintsev, end up dating their partners. (Bersten briefly dated his season 27 partner, Alexis Ren, in 2018, while Chigvintsev announced his engagement to Nikki Bella in January 2020.)

“You’re spending so much time with that one person,” she explained. “I think it’s inevitable when there are two beautiful, attractive people who are talented.”

The twosome seemed to be a match made in heaven — and it wasn’t long after their April 2019 wedding that they had babies on the brain. “I want babies. Val wants babies very badly. We definitely have spoken about it. That’s our future. That’s what we want when that’s gonna happen,” Johnson told Us exclusively in September 2020. “There’s that saying that there’s never the right time, but I think we just want to figure things out and then let it happen when it’s meant to happen.”

Chmerkovskiy and Johnson first sparked dating rumors in 2015 after they were reportedly seen getting cozy during DWTS rehearsals. In February 2016, the Ukrainian-American professional dancer was photographed kissing the Utah native on the cheek as they grabbed lunch together. However, they did not confirm their relationship at the time.

Shortly after Chmerkovskiy and Rose broke up, he rekindled his relationship with Johnson. The couple took a romantic trip to Europe together in June 2017 and exchanged flirtatious comments on social media. One month later, they made their relationship Instagram official when they attended his brother Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s wedding to Peta Murgatroyd.

Val professed his love for Johnson at the 2017 Industry Dance Awards and Cancer Benefit Show. He told Insider that he had “the wedding bug” after watching his brother tie the knot and gushed, “I’m in a great place and I’m in love — I’m very grateful for that.”

Johnson told Us in May 2018 that she and her beau had “definitely” spoken about getting engaged, but they did not want to rush into anything. She also admitted that they want kids “in the future.”

The duo’s discussions about the future clearly worked, because Val popped the question during a trip to Venice, Italy, in June 2018 . “I knew the moment I met you, you were the man of my dreams and I wanted to be with you forever,” Johnson wrote on Instagram at the time. “Thank you for making my fairytale come true today! Cannot believe I get to call you my FIANCÉ!!!! #engaged.”

The professional dancers tied the knot in a romantic ceremony at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, in April 2019. Several Dancing With the Stars alums — including Adam Rippon, Laurie Hernandez, Normani, Ginger Zee and Nikki Bella —looked on. DWTS pros Lindsay Arnold and Gaby Diaz served as bridesmaids, while Rippon, who was Johnson’s winning partner during season 26, was a “bridesman.”

“Got to explore the beautiful island of St. Lucia with my love yesterday,” Val shared via Instagram as he and Johnson celebrated their honeymoon on a tropical getaway. “As common as it is to see it written in captions nowadays gratitude is truly an essential ingredient to happiness and I don’t think there is ever enough of it. … Even in paradise, even alongside my true love, even with my health, and the luxury of streaming the last episode of G.o.T. there is still a periodical feeling of ... Whatever that feeling is I find action and a reminder of gratitude to be the remedy. Every time.”

So nice they did it twice! The pair exchanged vows once again in Utah in June 2019. “It was incredibly special because my little brother had to miss our wedding in April so we waited until he was home to have this reception,” Johnson told Us exclusively of the second ceremony. “My whole family was finally reunited for the first time in two years and it made me emotional the whole week! … It was truly the best week of my life!”

Val and his wife weren’t the only Chmerkovskiy family members who had babies on the brain. In October 2019, Johnson told Us that she and her sister-in-law Peta “have a deal that we’re going to get pregnant together.”

“I am so grateful that it’s you that I get to call my wife,” Val gushed via Instagram, dedicating a sweet post to his and Johnson’s first wedding anniversary. “That it’s you I get to wake up next to, that it’s you I get to love for life, you I get to have and eat my cake too. Rhyme aside, I love you dearly, lucky to have you and hold you near me. What a privilege I’ve been given, you’re God’s gift that keeps on giving. I love you.”

The dancing duo returned to the DWTS ballroom for season 29 and were forced to take drastic precautions amid the coronavirus pandemic. As a safety measure, married pros were not allowed to live together during production. “Say that we were living together [and] one of us tested positive, I am now affecting Val, and he is affecting his partner,” Johnson told Us in September 2020, shortly after she and her husband bought their first house together. “We finally unpacked and got settled in. We were loving it, and then we got called and they were like, ‘You know, one of you is going to have to move out.’”

Ready for their own tiny dancer! Nearly two years after tying the knot, the So You Think You Can Dance alum told Us she couldn’t wait to start expanding her family. “I want babies. Val wants babies very badly. We definitely have spoken about it. That’s our future,” she said in September 2020.

After putting their special anniversary plans on hold amid the COVID-19 crisis, the couple paid a visit to their wedding venue in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, in the fall of 2020. “Standing in the exact spot we said ‘I Do’ gave me butterflies all over again. ,” Johnson wrote via Instagram at the time.

Johnson raved over her “VALentine,” sharing a handful of throwback PDA pics to mark the day of love. “Awwwww love you guys!” fellow DWTS pro Emma Slater commented.

Days ahead of her 27th birthday, Johnson shared a sweet selfie with Chmerkovskiy. “Me + you,” she captioned the snap.

When the 30th season of DWTS kicked off, Johnson made history as part of the show's first same-sex duo with partner JoJo Siwa. Chmerkovskiy, for his part, was paired with Olivia Jade Giannulli.

Johnson admitted that it's "not fun" to be separated from her husband during the DWTS season due to COVID-19 guidelines. "I just want to be a full-on koala on him, kissing him," she exclusively told Us.

Later that month, Chmerkovskiy joked that he and his wife have "a very unfriendly competition" in the ballroom.

After Johnson and season 30 partner JoJo Siwa came in second place during the November 2021 finale, Chmerkovskiy gushed over his wife. “Congrats my love! ❤️,” he captioned a series of snaps from the finale. “Few know how hard you work, I’m one of the lucky ones to witness your process and how brilliant you are. To the next time you get to shine and be the star that you always are 🌟.”

Johnson raved over her husband's "snatched" and "chiseled" figure while hinting at his return to DWTS for season 31. "I feel like we've been so many people in our relationship, so many versions of ourself, which I think is such a beautiful thing about relationships in general, you know," she exclusively told Us. "You're constantly changing and evolving and the phase that he's in right now ... it's insane. It's like we just started dating again. Like, he has this long hair now that he's putting into a bun ... I keep calling him 'fitness Val.'"

The duo announced Johnson was pregnant with their first child.

After announcing they are expecting their first baby, Johnson shared the big reveal via Instagram, showing how she broke the news to her beau. In the adorable video, Chmerkovskiy opened a Nike shoe box that contains white baby shoes inside while a version of "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" by Hailey Reinhart plays.

"Oh, my God, are you serious?" the Ukrainian native exclaimed as he opens the box, smiling and hugging his wife in a sweet moment. He then picks up their dog and hilariously quipped, "You're gonna be a sister!"

The couple announced they were expecting a baby boy. "Today we are officially half way there to meeting our son. Saying those words still makes me emotional!! SO EXCITED to be a boy mom 😭," Johnson captioned an Instagram snap.

Sporting a baby bump, Johnson appeared on DWTS to help Chmerkovskiy and his partner, Gabby Windey, spice up their Rumba routine.

"I don't believe it for a second. ... Closer. You're not touching noses," the California native said. She instructed the Bachelorette alum on how to be more passionate with her husband. "We should be nose to nose and I should feel his little mustache right on the top of my lip," she explained, demonstrating.

Windey said of the tutorial: “Being sexy does not come natural to me at all but Jenna helped me a ton today and getting her permission to be passionate with Val helped me show a different side of myself. "

Show "Dancing with the Stars" - history of creation, participants, new season, couples, "Russia 1", presenters 2022

Biography

"Dancing with the Stars" is a popular show in which famous actors, singers, and musicians participate along with professional dancers. Each season becomes a bright event, new releases prepare unexpected and pleasant surprises for the audience. Some participants turn out to be partners not only on the floor, but also in life.

Creation history and rules

The history of the creation of the program, which started on the air of the Rossiya channel, is based on the similar British show Strictly Come Dancing. The program mainly represents the format of ballroom dancing, however, sometimes the numbers presented by the participants contain elements of other styles and directions of choreography.

The concept of the project is that one of the partners of the couple is a professional, and the other is a media person who has no dance experience. During the releases, "amateurs" learn a dance related to the European or Latin American program.

For the performance choreographers, together with directors, come up with a plot, a story, which makes the performances more spectacular and exciting. After the contestants demonstrate their abilities, the jury evaluates, commenting on the pair's mistakes or merits. At the end of the release, viewers join the voting for their favorite participants.

They send SMS messages or make phone calls to the program operator. The data obtained are summarized with the judges' scores. The dancers with the lowest score will leave the show. Gradually, only the finalists remain.

The winner of the show is determined in the last program. The fewer contestants become, the more dances they can show during the release. Each program starts with a traditional song (musical intro).

Presenters and jury

The first three seasons of the project were hosted by Anastasia Zavorotnyuk and Yuri Nikolaev. The audience fell in love with this charming couple. Then they were replaced by Maxim Galkin, he was in the program from the 4th to the 9th seasons. Daria Zlatopolskaya became the co-host of the popular parodist. She remained on the show in 2016, when Garik Martirosyan was invited to support the contestants with her.

The judging panel included professional dancers, choreographers and coaches. For a long time, its permanent chairman was Stanislav Popov, president of the Russian Dance Union. In 2012, Elena Chaikovskaya, a Soviet and Russian figure skating coach, took his place as a judge.

In 2013, the jury was headed by theater and film actor Oleg Menshikov, in 2015 by Russian ballet dancer Sergei Filin. In 2016, Stanislav Popov returned to the program. In several seasons, the stars of Russian show business acted as invited members of the jury and guests.

Subsequently, the composition of the jury and the presenter did not change much. In the 11th and 12th seasons, Andrei Malakhov hosted the program, and Yegor Druzhinin, Daria Zlatopolskaya, Nikolai Tsiskaridze and Igor Rudnik took the chair of the presenters.

Seasons

Each of the seasons had its own characteristics. The first one, which started in 2006, was attended by 8 couples. As a result of the struggle, the winners of the project were Maria Sittel and Vladislav Borodinov. The second in the Russian version of Strictly Come Dancing were actor and singer Anton Makarsky with a charming partner Anastasia Sidoran. And the third (with a small margin) were pop singer Natasha Koroleva and charismatic, temperamental Yevgeny Papunaishvili.

The season turned out to be successful, scored high ratings, so in the same year the creators decided to make a sequel. This time the number of couples increased to 10. According to the voting results, Anna Snatkina and Evgeny Grigorov were chosen as the best dancers of the project.

In 2008, the 3rd cycle of the program began, and again the number of participants increased. Now the audience could watch the competition of 12 dance duets. The peculiarity of the releases was that only ladies performed from the side of non-professional contestants. Among them are singers Irina Saltykova, Alika Smekhova, gymnast Svetlana Khorkina and others.

Prizes were distributed as follows: actress Daria Sagalova, known for the TV series "Happy Together", and Anton Kovalev were at the top of the podium. TV presenter Lera Kudryavtseva and Alexei Mazurin took second place, and artist Natalya Gromushkina and Pyotr Shigin took third place.

A year later, the audience saw the continuation of their favorite show. The program returned to its original format: non-professional men again appeared among the participants. However, none of them managed to take a prize: beautiful ladies turned out to be the winners. The first was Yulia Savicheva (paired with Yevgeny Papunaishvili), the second - Anna Kovalchuk (with German Mazhirin), the third - Natalia Bochkareva (with Alexander Litvinenko).

In Season 5, which aired in 2010, the amateur contestants were divided into two "teams", men's and women's. 18 duets competed for reaching the final. And in the final part, non-professionals united in new duets. The winners were singer Anastasia Stotskaya and judo and sambo champion Alexei Ledenev, while the silver medalists were Ksenia Sobchak and Maxim Shchegolev.

The idea of creating pairs of "star" participants turned out to be original and interesting to the audience. Therefore, in 2011, only “amateurs” were involved in the program. Coaches and members of the jury worked with the contestants. As a result, the best among those who mastered ballroom dancing from scratch were the performer Tatyana Bulanova and the skier Dmitry Lyashenko.

A year later, professional dancers returned for the new season of the show. The number of contestants included 12 couples. A feature of this cycle is the presence of invited guests in the program, including directors Karen Shakhnazarov, Pavel Chukhrai, Valery Todorovsky, Pavel Lungin and others.

For the second time in the history of the project, Evgeny Papunaishvili became the winner from among experienced dancers. The passionate and brutal favorite of the public made up a harmonious duet with singer Natalia Ionova (Gluk'oZa).

The invited guests remained in 2013, when the 8th season of the project began. Among the new celebrities, the audience saw actor Alexander Shirvindt, choreographer Andris Liepa, directors Timur Bekmambetov and Vladimir Menshov.

13 couples entered the floor in the first edition of this year. Among them were those who caused an ambiguous attitude of the jury and the audience. For example, the outrageous and unpredictable Danila Polyakov, a model boy who shines on Western catwalks, and his partner Alla Anastasyeva, who had a hard time in such an extravagant duet. The first place was taken by Elena Podkaminskaya and Andrey Karpov.

The next cycle of the show began in 2015. Among the 14 star participants were again only ladies. The money received as a result of SMS voting went to Russian charitable foundations. In a worthy competition, the charming Irina Pegova and Andrey Kozlovsky became the best.

Figure skater Adelina Sotnikova and Gleb Savchenko won second place and the audience award. In 2016, Alexandra Ursulyak and Denis Tagintsev ascended the first step of the podium. And a couple with Evgeny Papunaishvili was Glafira Tarkhanova.

A feature of the 11th season was that the episodes were held in the studio without spectators (due to the coronavirus pandemic that swept the world). The couple of Ivan Stebunov and Inna Svechnikova became the winners of the season. The following year, David Manukyan, Ekaterina Shpitsa and other stars fought for the first place. Sergey Lazarev and Ekaterina Osipova won the first place.

Dancing with the Stars now

The new 13th season of the project, which premiered in January 2022, appeared in the audience's favorite format. Experts in the art of dance had to teach the graceful movements of movie stars and pop stars. Among the latter were such artists as Alexandra Rebenok, Dmitry Kharatyan, Vladimir Marconi. A representative of the modern generation, Vanya Dmitrienko, agreed to try his luck in a new role.

Malakhov continued to host the show, the composition of the jury practically did not change, only Vladimir Varnava took the place of Ivan Rudnik this time.

Interesting facts

  • At the Dancing with the Stars stage, actress Ekaterina Volkova, known for the TV series Voronins, and dancer Andrei Karpov met and later got married. Now the couple are raising their daughter Elizabeth and posting joint photos on Instagram.
  • The number performed on April 10, 2016 by Alexander Petrov (in the guise of a German Wehrmacht officer) and Anastasia Antelava (in the guise of a Russian woman) became scandalous.
