Maksim Chmerkovskiy shared video of himself in Kyiv, Ukraine,

CNN  —

Maksim Chmerkovskiy shared on his verified Instagram account Thursday a video of himself in his homeland after it had been invaded by Russian forces.

The “Dancing With the Stars” professional dancer posted from Kyiv, Ukraine.

“There’s ALWAYS another way! WAR is NEVER an answer!” Chmerkovskiy wrote in the caption.

“P.S. I will never be the same,” he continued. “This is stressful and I’m getting old feelings back, like I’ve done this before. This does feel like the way it was when and why we left in the 90s.”

Chmerkovskiy told his followers that he’s “not a social media guy at times of some kind of personal difficulty and this is definitely not the time were I would normally would be posting anything on social media.”

“Everyone was hoping that the finality of this situation would be averted,” he said as sirens from emergency vehicles could be heard. “That there’s not going to be this kind of aggression…his kind of aggressive measure.”

Chmerkovskiy, whose younger brother, Valentin, is also a professional dancer, immigrated from Ukraine to the United States in the 1990s.

He also shared a video showing what appeared to be a family fleeing with their suitcases and another video of himself getting emotional about the situation in his native land.

He said he wanted to return to the US and realized that he has a way to because of his American passport.

“What I’m realizing is that my friends whose kids are here, whose moms, dads are here and elderly people who are here, they can’t just escape,” Chmerovskiy said emotionally.

A representative for Chmerkovskiy told CNN he is in the country working on the reality competition series “World of Dance UA.”

He first began performing with the hit ABC dance competition series during Season 2 in 2005. He won the competition in 2014 also served as a guest judge the following year during season 21.

Chmerovskiy married fellow “DWTS” pro, Peta Murgatroyd in 2017. The two are the parents of a 5-year-old son, Shai.

Murgatroyd and the couple’s son are not with him in Ukraine, according to Chmerovskiy’s representative.

Late on Thursday, Murgatroyd posted to her official Instagram account asking for “prayers” for her husband.

“I don’t usually ask these things from my social media network, however today is extremely hard and the next few will be even harder,” she wrote. “My pain is overwhelming and I’m struggling, but you sending your positive light and love to him would mean the world to me.”

She added that her husband is currently “safe” and she asked that people reading “pray that he comes home soon.”

“I grew to love this country the couple of times I visited and they’re in an unfathomable situation,” she added.

N.J.’s Maksim Chmerkovskiy of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in Ukraine: ‘I wanna go back home’

Ukrainian American celebrity Maksim Chmerkovskiy is posting updates from a Kyiv bomb shelter as the Russian invasion continues.

“The situation is pretty dire,” he said in a video Friday.

Chmerkovskiy, 42, who rose to fame as a dancing pro and competitor on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” has called Fort Lee home. He was born in Odessa, Ukraine and came to New York with his family in 1994. The Latin-ballroom dancing champion is also a judge on “Dancing with the Stars Ukraine.”

While Chmerkovskiy said he is safe, dancers he recently judged in competition are now picking up weapons and risking their lives to defend their country, he said.

The Russian conflict in Ukraine stirred memories of his trauma from the ’90s, he said, when he always felt on edge before his family left Eastern Europe.

“Please speak and post about all of this, so talking resumes and shooting stops!” he told his 921,000 Instagram followers.

Chmerkovskiy and his brother, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” champion Val (Valentin) Chmerkovskiy (who won the competition twice; Maksim won in 2014), and their father, Aleksandr “Sasha” Chmerkovskiy, own the Dance with Me chain of dance studios, which has locations in Fort Lee and Glen Rock.

When Maksim and Val were growing up, the family had dance studios in Ridgewood and Saddle Brook.

Posts contain some profanity.

Though Chmerkovskiy said he wanted to depart Ukraine and return to his family in the United States, he is staying put for now.

“I’m not currently trying to leave,” he said in a video posted to Instagram. “I’m staying here. I’m gonna do my best to make sure I’m safe as possible but I’m not moving towards the border. I heard it’s not safe. Unfortunately some of my friends are right now on the route, on the road to (the) Polish border. But they’re also reporting that it’s quite dangerous.”

Chmerkovskiy said he would continue to update his followers. He posted his first video about the situation Thursday, standing on a balcony in Kyiv.

“Contrary to what I should’ve probably done a while ago, but again, everybody has sources and resources and I have mine and I trust my sources and no one saw this coming,” Chmerkovskiy said. “Not that no one saw this coming, but everyone was hoping that the finality of the situation would be averted ... that it’s not going to be this kind of aggression, this kind of aggressive measures.”

As he said this, a siren wailed in the background.

Chmerkovskiy also shared video of families leaving the city with suitcases.

Initially, Chmerkovskiy, who lives in Malibu, California, talked about knowing he could eventually leave Ukraine because of the nature of his passport.

“Honestly, I’m getting really emotional, it’s been a little difficult,” he said in another video. “You know me, I stay strong and I don’t show it, but I wanna go back home.”

He wiped tears from his eyes.

“I realize that I have the way to, you know?” Chmerkovskiy continued. “I realize that I have a different passport and my family is far away and what I’m realizing is that my friends, who kids are here, whose moms, dads are here and elderly people are here, that they can’t just escape, you know?”

From there, he addressed his Russian followers and asked them to speak out, however “comfortable” they are in their position, be it Moscow or elsewhere in the country.

“Dear Russians, you know me,” Chmerkovskiy said. “And I know there’s a lot of people currently in Russia that are watching this that are watching the news and hearing the propaganda and hearing this complete nonsense that’s been talked about. I am not at this point someone who is pleading for someone else’s safety from a far distance, from a safe distance. I’m somebody who is about to go to a bomb shelter because sh-t’s going down.

The celebrity dancer had been filming the dance competition series “World of Dance” in Ukraine. He said he had been in the country six months when the Russian invasion began.

“I think that in 2022 civilized world, this is not the way we do things, and I think that as a powerful, forward-thinking nation, not a third world kind of country, I think the Russians need to get up and actually say something because no one’s opinion is being heard,” he said. “This is all one man’s ambition.”

The TV personality said he stood with his native country.

“WAR is NEVER an answer,” he said in one Instagram post. “I will never be the same. This is stressful and I’m getting old feelings back, like I’ve done this before. This does feel like the way it was when and why we left in the 90s. Like my old PTSD I’ve finally fixed is coming back. I literally only just forgot about those ‘always on the edge’ feelings and actually started worrying about things like bbq grills. I’m crying as I’m typing this because all man deserves to worry about ‘bbq grills’ and not f--king war. Hug your loved ones.”

“Please pray for my husband Maks,” Chmerkovskiy’s wife, fellow “Dancing with the Stars” champ Peta Murgatroyd, said in an Instagram post.

“I don’t usually ask these things from my social media network, however today is extremely hard and the next few will be even harder,” said Murgatroyd, 35.

Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd got married in 2017 and have a 5-year-old son, Shai.

Valentin Chmerkovskiy, 35, also addressed his brother’s status in Ukraine.

“My parents fled this country for this exact reason,” he said in a post to his one million followers on Instagram. “Not because it wasn’t good to them, but because their kids would see war eventually. It’s a cruel irony that 28 years later my brother is in a bomb shelter in Kiev.

“If they hadn’t left I would be on the front lines defending my home right now,” Val Chmerkovskiy continued.

“And the most heartbreaking thing of all I would be either killing or dying at the hands of my fellow brothers. The Russian people don’t want this!! We stood by each other(’s) side. We loved and celebrated one another. I speak Russian yes but make no mistake about it, I am a proud Ukrainian and now the world will finally know the difference. Slava Ukraini all day every day! And to all my Russian friends this might be the best and only time to stand up to your dictator.”

Max Chmerkovsky about the upcoming superfinal and the best moments of the Dancing with the Stars show

The judge of the Dancing with the Stars show Maxim Chmerkovsky, on the eve of the grandiose superfinal of the project, exclusively for the 1 + 1 website, spoke about the criteria by which he evaluates the participants, named the strongest and weakest sides and remembered favorite moments of this season.

Already on Sunday, November 28, at 21:00 , the grand superfinal of the main dance show of the country "Dancing with the Stars" will take place. On the eve of the decisive broadcast for the three pairs of finalists, the site's editors talked to the new judge of this season - Maxim Chmerkovskiy. The famous choreographer, world champion in Latin dance and winner of the show “Dancing With The Stars” spoke about how he evaluates the dancers and stars expected from the finalists and what numbers of the season he wants to see.

finalists of the show "Dancing Zirkami"

about the final of the show and the rooms that I want to review

after the semi -final of the Max Chemmerovsky visited the studio "Your Day", where he told what the finalists should work on in order to win the show. In general, the judge of the show "Dancing with the Stars" is convinced:

“In the final, the audience will decide everything. If Voitenko thinks he is doing everything right, let him do it. If Logai thinks he can win on supports, let him do it. For me, by the way, here is an argument in favor of Harlan - she does not have her own special theme. How she performs in the final is all about what she has learned and that is the very foundation of this project. If only stars with inclinations and preparedness got here, then, probably, this show would not be as interesting as it is now.

We asked Max what performances impressed him so much that we would like to review them again in the recording:

“I would watch all the dances with Voitenko that he did solo. This is really his advantage, he is an amazing performer. I believe he will be a megastar. And Logai too, by the way. I believe that for their career, victory or defeat at the dance will not play a special role. But I hope that the experience gained on this show will allow them to open up even more. Kadnaya and Lida Lee had awesome dances. There's been a lot going on this season because the production team has been awake for three months now and makes a show out of every performance. I really liked our trio with Harlan and Dikusar. There are dance moments in all these performances that simply captivate the viewer.”

One of the most spectacular dances this season was the passionate "survival" tango in the semi-finals, when the judges decided which of the three danced better and deserved bonus 3 points from the jury. Max admitted that he was in the minority, because in his opinion, Harlan was the best in this tango (the majority for Artur Logay - ed.). Here is the dance that caused such a lively discussion:

Chmerkovskiy gave a detailed commentary to the site editors why he assessed tango for survival in this way. In particular, the choreographer noted:

"I don't look at the show as a media person, I look at the performances as a professional who has been in this all my life. I can explain in detail every step and every word. For me, Harlan was the winner of the tango. Because she showed growth: from what "she reached the finals at a very low level. The guys, Kostya and Artur, did not show this, although they give their best on the floor and try. I think that Voitenko is stronger in individual dances, but when they are all three together, Lay him a little I lost 2-1 to the judges.”

Chmerkovsky emphasized that it is very important for him to convey his expectations and impressions directly to the participants of the show so that they understand exactly what he means, since he knows well how to teach anyone to dance:

“I am not only a dancer, I am also a coach and a teacher. I started training at the age of 14. My wards became world champions, 17-time American champions - I have a very long experience as a coach and teacher. Today I have 14 dance studios specifically for adults. I know how to approach any person and teach him how to dance correctly.”

“I probably started talking openly with everyone from the fifth week: people can’t be offended by me, because not only from my top - the judge’s place - I comment on their performances. After each broadcast I go to them and communicate. It started from the moment Lida Lee left. I explained my opinion and after that I began to communicate more with the members, because I want to be understood correctly, especially given the certain language barrier.”

On the eve of the final of the show "Dancing with the Stars" Chmerkovsky makes a particularly detailed comment on what exactly he expects from the final three in general and from each participant, in particular from Konstantin Voytenok, whose performance in the semi-final also caused a dispute among the judges:

“I understand him too. But he also needs to understand the things that I say in order for this show to be the way it should be. This is not an individual dance with the stars. This is "Dancing with the Stars", built on paired ballroom dancing, in Latin, on a standard program. The show was not based on ballet, modern or jazz. This season, in my opinion, he has already danced 5 times contemporary, jazz, modern, freestyle, and for me these are just demonstration performances. Labor is when you have to learn how to dance quickstep, dance it for a minute and a half without support and breaking your couple, because it's hard. It's easy to do things that are comfortable for you. It's hard to learn to dance."

Max Chmerkovsky emphasized that as actors who are accustomed to the stage, Artur Logay and Konstantin Voitenko find it easier to perform in a certain way:

“Logai and Voitenko from the first broadcast demonstrated their awesome base - as artists who can dance. They can find what they need and do it. There are actors who do not have a sense of rhythm and musicality, but this is definitely not about Costa and Arthur. These guys immediately declared themselves as contenders for a long journey.

READ ALSO: Artur Logay on "Dancing with the Stars": the way to the superfinal (interesting facts, unique images and performances) in the end, the choice of the star itself and for your choice must be responsible, even if in the process it becomes an additional challenge, like with Voitenko:

“There is an expression in English: you make the bed you sleeping. That is, you made a choice and you have to live with this choice. As far as I understood, at first this choice was made by Kostya, because he wanted to show himself outside the box, it was in favor of the difference in height, and I really liked it. But if a person demonstrates that he is uncomfortable and decides to do everything himself, then this is incomprehensible to me, it’s like disqualifying yourself.”

However, the main difficulty is not in the proportions or harmony of the couple, but still in the developing tandem as a dancing duet on the floor:

“Sometimes it was obvious: the partner did not help his star, but did even worse. Logai has the coolest partner of this season, and not because Voitenka's partner is worse, but because his pair, Kostya's pair, fails to show himself like the pair of Logay and Karelina. For me, Voitenko continues his solo part. This is my subjective opinion."

READ ALSO: The path of actor Konstantin Voytenok to the superfinal of "Dancing with the Stars": we recall impressive dances and personal dramatic moments :

“What Anya and Artur do without the audience or anyone else talking is so difficult, so incomprehensible. And the fact that they have been doing this for 12 weeks and without a fall is just a blessing. Because I always watch with bated breath - this is a live broadcast, and they just have survival support! I respect it very much! There were weeks when I did not like it and it was not enough, but it was the other way around. I hope that they still will continue as they themselves want it. This is exactly what I said to everyone after the broadcast: you need to show what you can do in a dream. Do not invent yourself, but continue on your way with those successful maneuvers that helped you reach the final.

Chmerkovskiy also highly appreciated some male partners:

“Harlan has the best professional partner, and this is also clearly visible. I think that Anton Nesterko is also cool. And Leonov is awesome too.”

The judge of the show "Dancing with the Stars" Max Chmerkovsky showed his walk around Kyiv

On Sunday at 21:00 on 1+1 TV channel the fifth live broadcast of the main dance show of the country "Dancing with the Stars" will be held, which will be dedicated to Ukrainian and world cinema.

The participants of the project will transform into their favorite movie characters and amaze with their dancing skills.

Judges Max Chmerkovsky, Katerina Kukhar and Vlad Yama this Sunday will be joined by the winner of Dancing with the Stars, choreographer Ilona Gvozdeva, who received the project cup together with humorist Igor Lastochkin. But her partner in the third season of the show, humorist Yuri Tkach, will lead the balcony.

The other day Ukrainian-American choreographer and show judge Max Chmerkovskiy, who lives in Los Angeles with his family, walked around Kyiv and visited the holy place of Ukraine — the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The judge did not restrain his admiration for the beauty of Kyiv.

"My walk was very cool. From Khreshchatyk itself, we walked to the Lavra and it is very interesting. When I went there, I was embarrassed even to take photos or take pictures. a guide who will explain everything to me correctly, tell and show every corner. I want to know the history of this place," Max Chmerkovsky said on his Instagram.

Also, the new judge of the show shared with subscribers his desire to ride in a trolley bus.

"I haven't ridden a trolleybus for such a long time, I can't even remember the last time I was in it," says the choreographer.

In the comments, subscribers supported the star in his admiration for the beauty of the Ukrainian capital and also recommended visiting Lviv, Kharkiv, the Carpathians and other places.

Max Chmerkovsky took part in 17 seasons of Dancing with the Stars in America, but he got the first place in the show in tandem with the famous figure skater Meryl Davis.

Let us remind you that on the fifth live broadcast one of the couples will leave the parquet. The two couples that receive the lowest scores from spectators and judges in total will be at risk. The couple with the fewest votes will also leave the show.
