Maks Chmerkovskiy on His Relationship With Peta, Talking to Meryl Davis, and DWTS

Strict orders have been given from Val Chmerkovskiy regarding his older brother, Maksim: "Ask him anything! He's very funny," urges the Dancing With the Stars season 20 front-runner. Consider it done. It's been a year since the elder Chmerkovskiy charmed DWTS fans with his magnetic partnership with Meryl Davis in season 18, and fans haven't let him forget it. He's one of DWTS's most talked-about (and controversial) pros, even though season 18 was also his last. Aside from an appearance on the DWTS 10th Anniversary Special, Maks has been hard at work on SWAY: A Dance Trilogy that blurs the lines between conventional ballroom, live theater, and other dance genres—and features plenty of his DWTS family. Glamour: You recently had surgery on your knee. How's it doing?

Maksim Chmerkovskiy: It's still attached. It'll be fine. I put it off for a while, but it got to the point where some things fell through and I had the time to rehab it.

Glamour: Will it impact what you can do at SWAY?

Maks: No, we've done bigger things on worse body parts. I had a very shredded cartilage in my knee, so over the years it got worse and worse and the pain got worse and worse, but it affects your ankle, your hips, your back. I'm totally cool with it. If you're an athlete, this is what is inevitably going to happen. The body isn't meant to do the things we do.

Glamour: Fans are obsessed with SWAY, but right now it's only in New York City. Is there any chance you'll expand to Los Angeles or Chicago?

Maks: Yeah, there is. We'll see what happens. SWAY is very different than anything you've ever seen. It's put together for reasons that were different. It's not a business. Every time we put on SWAY, it's better than before. It's awesome to have a show of this magnitude so you can do it with your friends and just have fun. I've always wanted to put on a show in the Hammerstein Ballroom, and this is it.

Glamour: Val mentioned that he wants Rumer Willis to be a part of SWAY. Is that a sure thing, or is Val just trying to be optimistic?

Maks: We'll definitely have Meryl in the show, we'll definitely have Amy [Purdy], which we are super excited about, but to be honest with you, if Val decides to call up and say, "Hey, I want Rumer to be in the show because we won the damn thing," I'll be like, "Let's do it! Why the hell not?" What's the point of having your own show if you can't accommodate your friends? We just want to have fun. We don't want to lose the integrity of the production, and we won't. It's not a Tony-award-winning play, so we don't fall into that category, but we just want to have a blast and enjoy ourselves, and that's exactly what we're doing. If Val and Rumer win Dancing With the Stars, then absolutely, we'll let Rumer do whatever the hell she wants! [Laughs]

Glamour: Bruce Willis said he wants to dance, but without the reality TV aspect of it. So if you get him to join SWAY...

Maks: I think Bruce can do whatever the hell he wants to be honest with you. [Laughs] We'll accommodate anything Bruce wants. He's a very cool cat. I've always had a soft spot for Ms. Demi. This whole season has been very stressful for Val and Rumer, but very enjoyable for everybody else. [Laughs] I love the sisters. Tallulah is somebody I just want to carry with me all the time. And Scout is amazing. The girls are incredible, and moM is...yeah. I love Mom. [Laughs] I told her that too, by the way.

Glamour: How many dances will Meryl be in, and how will it be different from the last SWAY?

Maks: Last time she flew in and flew the hell out the same night because she had a show in Japan or something. She never really got to experience it, so I want her to experience everything from the rehearsal days to the show to after the show to the whole thing. But our stuff is different because we introduced a different number in the 10th Anniversary and put together a little paso doble that we haven't done while we were competing on Dancing With the Stars, so we have that, plus her and Amy. I put them into different parts of the show as well, but I don't want to reveal too much. They'll have a lot more stuff to do and enjoy themselves and have fun. She'll have a great time.

Glamour: How did it feel being back at DWTS for the 10th Anniversary? Was it as if no time had passed?

Most Popular

Maks: To be honest with you, it doesn't feel like anything because I live it every day like I never left. My brother is there, my friends are there, people that are in my life are still on the show. There's a very tight-knit connection because of SWAY. A lot of people in our show are also on Dancing With the Stars like Artem, Henry, Sharna, Jenna, Emma, etc. I deal with it every day, literally. Val and I live together. Peta comes home. It's all the same talk. [Laughs] Sometimes it's like you left, but you never really did leave. Othertimes I look at it like, "It was a freakin' blessing, man. Who wouldn't want that job to do these things?" So I don't feel like time has passed. I love everybody on that show.

Glamour: Would you ever come back to DWTS?

Maks: Definitely not. [Laughs] You have to walk away when the time is right, and the time was right. Nothing was out of ordinary. I think the change of guard is necessary. Like a plant that in order to improve growth, you have to pull branches. It's the same thing. Every now and again, everything needs to be refreshed. Me, Cheryl, Karina, the few of us leaving, I think this might be one of the last times we see Derek [Ed. note: See what Derek told us about returning for next season here]. Tony's still around, but I don't know for how long. It's not set. It's awesome. We've moved on, and the show is still where it is. You have people like Peta and Val, who kind of became faces of the show, and let's see what happens. I hope the show stays for another 10 years, and we'll come celebrate it when we're a lot older.

Glamour: What was your favorite dance on DWTS?

Maks: I've done quite a few things, and I always look back for some reason at the first time that Cheryl [Burke] and I danced. I think it was season two to Julio Iglesias. I think that stood out for me because it was the first ever results show solo number or something like that. It was quite significant, and it was the first time I didn't care about being judged. It's very memorable for me and for Cheryl. We had fun.

Glamour: Who is the partner you talk to the most often? Is it Meryl?

Maks: Yeah, for sure it's Meryl. I can always call Mel B., I can always call Denise Richards, I can always call a lot of people, and we'll have a great time. Every time I see Tia Carrera, it's like 10 years ago happened five minutes ago. She looks the same. I don't know if I do, but hopefully I just act a little wiser. These relationships never really go away. You always remember that person. I talk to Meryl a lot because it's just a different type of partnership. We had a great time. And we won! And obviously I talk to her because she's awesome and she likes me for some reason. [Laughs] I adore her, she's awesome. She's small and she's big at the same time. She's Meryl. Who doesn't like Meryl?__

Glamour: I know you often don't like to talk about your personal life, but you've been seen out and about with Peta, and she's in SWAY as well. How are things different this time around?

Maks: We're cool. I think that to briefly answer your question, we're just older. I guess things happen differently when you're older and time's passed and things have happened. I am a very intelligent guy, contrary to what it might seem. [Laughs] I feel different now because we're different.

Glamour: What about upcoming projects? What happens after SWAY?

Maks: I just want to pursue acting. I'll be spending a lot of time out in L.A., and [acting] gives me a completely different dimension. I respect it. After taking it seriously and working on it and taking lots of classes and lessons, I'm fascinated by the tools that acting gives you. I feel like it makes sense to do something creative.

Watch Meryl Davis and Rumer Willis Dance Together in This Exclusive Shall We Dance on Ice Clip

They are two of Dancing With the Stars' most popular Mirrorball champions, and now Meryl Davis (season 18) and Rumer Willis (season 20) are teaming up together. The only difference this time? The absence of their DWTS partners, Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy. In this exclusive clip from this Saturday's Paul Mitchell Shall We Dance on Ice, Davis and Willis put their dance experience on display with one another before being joined by pros Dmitry Chaplin and Damian Whitewood. Truthfully, our favorite ladies more than hold their own before the guys join them. Take a look: 2016 Paul Mitchell Shall We Dance on Ice - Rumer Willis / Meryl Davis from Eric Smith on Vimeo. Paul Mitchell's Shall We Dance on Ice airs this Saturday, February 13, at 3 P.M. ET on ABC and will air again on February 27. Rumer Willis hosts the special alongside fellow DWTS champion, Kristi Yamaguchi. The show will also feature performances by DWTS vets Chelsie Hightower and Anna Trebunskaya and include performances by Davis and her Olympic gold-medal winning partner, Charlie White, plus Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, and many others. What You Didn't See During Dancing With the Stars' 10th Anniversary Special (Hey, Maks & Meryl!)

I got the chills watching the Dancing With the Stars 10th Anniversary Special in the ballroom last week. Maybe I've inhaled too much Disney pixie dust over the season, but there was truly something magical being in that room with so many DWTS alum and fan favorites (ahem, Maks and Meryl). And that's why I want to share what you didn't see on tonight's special. Enjoy, and happy anniversary, Dancing With the Stars! Tuesday, April 21 6:15 P.M. I arrive backstage to the hustle and bustle of what feels like a finale show but without the stress of a competition. I spot Meryl Davis and Candace Cameron Bure by craft services but decide to wait to say my hellos until we all get into the ballroom. 6:25 P.M. Inside the ballroom, 90 percent of the seats have the names of former and current DWTS celebs on them, as well as a few reserved for members of longtime press covering the show and ABC notables. Mysteriously listed on a couple chairs are the names Kelly Kapowski, Richard Belding, and Jesse Spano. For the record, I never spot them. 6:27 P.M. Go Behind the Scenes at the Dancing With the Stars 10th Anniversary Party

Maks and Meryl finally reunited in the ballroom, Alfonso and Witney did their last dance as reigning champions, Candace Cameron Bure talked Fuller House, and Derek Hough was nowhere to be seen. How this is all going to fit into a one-hour special on ABC next week, I have no idea. The Dancing With the Stars 10th Anniversary Special was so good, so amazeballs, that you guys best make sure your DVR has a permanent place for it. Trust me when I say this is one hour of television you're going to want to watch over and over again. To hold you over until then, check out what happened after the taping at the 10th anniversary party: The first question I know you guys will ask is where was Maks? He was on a 10 P. M. flight to New York City and thus unable to make it to the party. Same with his little brother, Val, and his partner, Rumer, who were also headed east. I was almost positive that even if Derek Hough, who was injured the night before last while rehearsing for the special, couldn't dance, he'd still be there in the audience. Unfortunately, Mark Ballas indicated to

Big News: Maks and Meryl Are Returning to Dancing With the Stars for a Special Performance

How long have I been wanting to write that headline?! Almost a year after Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Meryl Davis took home the season-18 Mirrorball trophy, the sizzling superstars are returning to the dance floor for Dancing With the Stars: 10th Anniversary Special, which will air next Tuesday, April 28, on ABC. As a result, next week's double elimination has now been pushed to Tuesday, May 5, per Tom Bergeron. Update: Click here to read what happened at the 10th Anniversary taping last night! Paparazzi photos have been running rampant online in the past week featuring quite a few past DWTS contestants either hanging out, rehearsing, or watching the show from the ballroom, and now you know why. The special will also take a look back at fan favorite moments from the past 20 seasons, and the show will kick off with the largest opening number ever, featuring 46 stars including the judges, hosts, past pros, and celeb alums. Derek Hough and Mark Ballas were supposed to hit the dance floor together (!) for a "bromance" dance, but Derek injured his toe last night during rehearsals for the 10th Anniversary Special and will now be unable to dance. Maks and Meryl to Reunite (Plus, Who Was Eliminated on Dancing With the Stars)!

Almost daily, I get emails from readers asking me about a Maks and Meryl reunion, and I finally have good news to share: Shall We Dance will be taping a live performance with Meryl, Charlie White, Maks, and Sharna Burgess in Bloomington, Illinois, in December to air as part of an ABC special in February. From what I'm hearing now, Maks and Meryl won't be performing on the ice together (though I'd love to see that), but expect to see lots of airtime with them. Meryl, who was in the audience at tonight's show with Amy Purdy, recently won the Sportswoman of the Year Award at the Women's Sports Foundation's 35th Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards and celebrated with Maks the following day. During a commercial break, I caught up with Amy and Meryl, who were so thrilled to be back in the ballroom. Amy goes back to "work" with Oprah on Thursday and is gearing up for a December launch of her new book, On My Own Two Feet. Behind the Scenes at the Dancing With the Stars Premiere: A Deliciously Colorful Train Wreck

It's not that all of a sudden I've become a fan of the very random cast, but it's the love I have for a show that somehow always manages to lure me in and keep me there. Maksim Chmerkovskiy Is NOT Returning to Dancing With the Stars. No!

I have some disappointing news to report this morning. Maksim Chmerkovskiy went on The View to announce that he won't be returning to Dancing With the Stars as a professional dancer: "I'm done dancing. I feel it's time. I loved the experience. When I came back to the show, it was not the same...I was different, probably. When I came back, I saw this amazing talent, Val [his brother] included. I looked at it and thought they can do much more and better. I was taking up a huge spot." What on earth? Let's discuss. When I spoke with executive producer Joe Sungkur a couple of weeks ago at the ABC TCA party he said that "we're still working that out" in regards to a return from Maks. Maks mentioned in his statement that he's done dancing, but I've heard rumors that DWTS is interested in adding a fourth judge to the panel this year and not a guest judge like last year. Could Maks fill that last spot? It's certainly possible, as he guest-judged two seasons ago and also has judged in other international versions of DWTS. Here's the reason I think he's not coming back: Unlike actors who

There was plenty you guys didn't see behind the scenes (after all, it's a bustle of activity over these two nights!), including my pre-show run-in with Maks! Going into tonight, I pretty much expected James or Candace to be going home, as my colleagues and I have predicted Meryl/Maks and Amy/Derek to be the final two standing. To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of James and Peta's freestyle. It was high-energy, but I feel like we've seen it before. But it's clear the two of them loved it. Updated: Dancing With the Stars: Who Got Eliminated, Plus What Cheryl Burke and Peta Murgatroyd Say About Maks and Meryl's Rumored Romance

Here's an interesting observation about Dancing With the Stars this season: For the first time ever, we seem to care less about who was eliminated and more about what has been going on in the ballroom (or off) between Meryl and Maks. And that was true again tonight when Maks laid into guest-judge Abby Lee Miller of Lifetime's Dance Mom's for her criticism of his rumba with Meryl. And have we progressed at all in the Meryl and Maks dating world? Read on! In somewhat of a shocker, Candace and Mark (who were in jeopardy at the start of the show) were declared safe, and Danica and Val were eliminated. What I found more shocking was Peta's face during the last few seconds. ..Tony Dovolani was backstage with us, and even he looked stunned that Peta seemed to think she was going to be eliminated. At press time, she was being sent nearby to the hospital, but Derek remained on set, so I'll have an interview with him coming tomorrow. And then there was guest judge Julianne Hough calling out Maksim Chmerkovskiy for "phoning it in" with partner Danica McKellar. My head is still spinning. Australian pop sensation Cody Simpson was battling a cold backstage but still came back to do press. "Show nights are just unbelievable. The atmosphere is incredible, which is what gets you through," admitted Simpson. Needless to say, that roaring teen base is doing just that. "Those signs are incredible," he said of the handmade posters that his younger fans had in the audience. "I'll always give them a wave. But the screams are so loud, my ears are always ringing. But, hey, you sacrifice certain things for your job!" he joked. Unfortunately Candace Cameron Bure wasn't in as good of a mood. Coming in last on the leader board, Bure
