Denis Kasper and Maria Bakumets: Not changing themselves

Denis and Ksenia Kasper - perhaps one of the most iconic duets of the decade. The finalists of the championships of Russia among amateurs and professionals, provocative and charming, despite the quirks of the judicial Fortune, they have always been liked by the public. However, in 2007 each of them chose their own path in dancing. A very dear person appeared in Denis's life - Maria Bakumets. Denis and Maria started dancing together, and on 19September 2008 - became spouses.

A few minutes of communication with this duet is enough to understand: this is a union of two strong and interesting personalities. Maria, who is carried away by the creative nature of Denis, balances with female wisdom and prudence. This couple is not bored together. During the interview, Denis and Maria often add each other, enter into playful discussions, but very quickly come to a mutual agreement.

Before starting the main part of the conversation, we asked the duet to talk a little about the past. But Denis Kasper is not one of those who like to look back, and therefore he tells his backstory in just a few words. However, probably only he knows how many joyful and bitter experiences are behind each of these words:0003

\"Ksenya and I started our creative path in Kyrgyzstan, in the city of Osh. I never thought that later, in the future, we would dance in Moscow. Our first teacher was Elizaveta Ivanovna Tulina. She invited me to Ilya Viktorovich Danilov and Tatyana Vladimirovna Rybalko to our club.

Ilya Danilov and Tatyana Rybalko were the first people in dancing whom I looked at with admiration. When they came to the demonstration performances in Kyrgyzstan, for us they were just gods. At 19In 1993 we moved to Ufa and played for the \"Telemark\" club, headed by Rimma Faritovna Kondusova. And then in 1995 Ilya Viktorovich invited us to Moscow.

Masha also started her journey in Ukraine. Later, like Ksenia and I, she moved to Moscow: she danced in \"Eureka\" and \"Dynamo\". Until 2007, we danced with Ksenia: we had ups and downs, we gave a lot of interviews. Then Ksenia paired up with Markus Homm, and in 2008 we started dancing with Masha. Our joint work has been going on for about two years. nine0003

And so, on September 26, an evening dedicated to the end of our competitive career with Masha took place. Unfortunately, Ilya Danilov and Tatyana Rybalko and Elena and Vladimir Kolobovs and Natalya Kulagina were not at our evening. These are the people who helped us a lot, who believed in us. And we want to thank them for that.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to our parents, in particular our mothers, who have had a huge responsibility all this time. They have done a lot for us: they sacrificed their health, their time, moved to other cities, changed the rhythm of life. nine0003

On September 26th we had the opportunity to thank Alan Thornsberg as well. Before Alan, I studied with different teachers. Tona Nihagen, Colin James, Hans Halke, Bianca Schreiber have made a great contribution to my development. Maria, in turn, studied with Rude Verme, Tona Nihagen, Carol Macrail. With Alan, we began to regularly study with Xenia in 2003, and now this is our main and only teacher in the Latin American program \"

Why did Alan Thornsberg become your main teacher?

Denis: I will speak figuratively. Imagine pizza. In this pizza, we can see some separate components: tomatoes, olives, mushrooms, olives. In my case, I acquired the above ingredients thanks to the wonderful teachers I have already listed. But the pizza itself as a whole is Alan Thornsberg. This is a teacher who prepares all this "pizza", the whole product. What Alan conquered me as a teacher is the fact that he gave me fundamental knowledge. I danced for fifteen years before Alan, but I always had some questions. And Alan, the man who solved all these issues, put everything together like a puzzle, like a mosaic. nine0003

Maria: He is like a builder of a house. There are many great educators, but many of them start from the "roof" or the "windows". Alan starts with the foundation: the way a house is built. Everything is very structured, step by step. First the foundation, and then only the doors, windows and roof.

I used to have a dream of working with Alan Thornsberg, because for me he was always number one. With whatever partner he danced with, he embodied Latin American dances for me, and their three main priorities. This is Man and Woman, this is Latin America, this is Musicality. nine0003

This dream came true. Still, when we danced with Anton Baurov, we were engaged, basically, with Alan. And, of course, when we paired up with Denis, we did not have a question about which teacher to go to. We had a common view of the dance.

What changed for you when you moved to the "Professionals" category?

Maria: If Denis has already danced professionally with Ksenia, then everything has changed for me. The atmosphere in professionals is different, and it was much easier and more comfortable for me to dance in this category. Perhaps because I turned professional with a partner - a professional who was already an established dance personality, who had already made himself known. nine0003

Denis: Ksenya and I have been dancing professionally since 2004. And when I turned professional, naturally, I began to perceive the dance differently. True, by this time I already had the necessary experience. It seems to me that a professional is someone who can be interesting for the viewer in simple things. In professionals, you try to look high quality and spectacular even in fairly simple things.

Each couple has its own strengths. What are you betting on? nine0161

Denis: We have always focused on musicality. But you need to understand what is meant here. When we talk about musicality, we must not forget that technique is directly related to musicality. These are concepts that are absolutely inseparable. We know what fraction of a beat we step on, what fraction of a beat we fill, and this is all connected with technique, with mechanics. Musicality gives its results in interaction with a partner.

It's a very difficult thing to feel each other. Dance so that your partner\"caught\". When we train, we are interested in dancing improvisation. If there are elements of improvisation in the dance, and you reach the level where your partner can understand your idea, this is very cool. nine0003

Improvisation can be different. You can improvise yourself, forgetting about your partner. When a partner improvises with a partner, this is completely different. We can change some steps, directions, but we cannot lose interaction with each other. We must always stay on the same wavelength with a partner.

Maria: We start our practice mostly with improvisation. At first, it was a little unusual for me. \"Denis, what kind of improvisation?\". But Denis always told me: \"My dear, the most important thing is that you understand me. Choreography is choreography. But when you understand your partner, you react to his leading, then you feel like you are not a robot that is programmed by someone, you feel herself as a woman. nine0003

Denis: This does not mean that a partner cannot make decisions, that she cannot show her individuality in the dance. But, if we are talking about simpler communication, where the partner's actions are the result of the partner's actions, then there are their own rules and their own tasks. Partner leads, partner follows. When the partner took the lead, and the partner can already decide whether to follow the partner or make some own decision, this is already a higher level of skill.

Maria: I never thought that I would enjoy improvisation. But Denis is a person who has this skill, he just has a gift, in improvisation Denis, I think, is one of the best...

Denis: I'm blushing now (smiles).

Maria: As Denis told me, when they first started working with Alan, they forgot everything. For a year he just "led" Xenia: he studied her directions, studied what account she was advancing on, what account she was changing direction to. nine0003

Denis: In parallel with this, I was also fond of social - directions: such as lindy hop, salsa, Argentine tango. And everything is built on improvisation. It is very interesting. True, it is very difficult to apply these principles, this format in ballroom dancing. Maybe that's why we didn't have such a result in professionals and amateurs. What we stake on, how we understand the dance, unfortunately, is not so formatted at the moment.

Now in the format of a competitive, ballroom dance - polished, presentable, speed, picture. And all this is correct, as it should be. And we don't blame anyone. Perhaps we do not look expressive enough in some positions, but we dance with our soul. For us, this is the most important thing. We like to dance the way we understand dance. nine0003

Maria: You can dance beautifully, you can stretch the line, but at the same time be narcissistic, cold: not understanding the nature of the dance, not understanding your partner, not being connected with him. If you dance with a partner, you have a plastic body, expressive lines, this is probably the champion. But it is not always possible to combine all these things.

Everyone has different talents. Slavik Kryklivy, for example, has a plastic body, he is good at it. I think Denis has other talents, and in this he is unique. Many partners have a plastic body. And this is how to manage a partner, to know so much about music, about the structure, about the nature of each dance, this, I think, not everyone will be able to do. This is a different talent, different priorities. nine0003

Do you think it's possible to get tired of dancing?

Denis: If you really love to dance, then it is impossible to get tired of dancing.

Maria: Why not? It seems to me that it is possible for some period, and then return to the floor with new forces. But there must be a period of moral recovery. We are not robots after all.

Denis: Just moral fatigue is usually accompanied by some kind of physical activity. Well, for example, you have a very important series of tournaments ahead of you, where you have to give everything one hundred percent. You dance from tour to tour, and, of course, you get tired of it, tired, including mentally. But as soon as you rest for a few days, you are again drawn to the parquet. nine0003

Maria: Why haven't we wanted to dance tournaments lately? When you realize that you are not going out to dance for the result, then this is a completely different feeling. Many argued about this with Denis. They told him: Denis, do you want a result? This cannot be. You are a dancer!

Denis: The result is what sits in you subconsciously. But I, for one, could never dance five dances in a row in training. I can't dance five sambas or five chachas in a row, because it develops physics and will help me in the competition. I am not a machine. I'd rather dance one samba, but I'll try to dance it with my soul, for pleasure. But when you set a task...

Maria: When you have a goal, you try to achieve it no matter what. You do 33 turns, you jump above the ceiling, you try to create beautiful lines. But there is one but. When you dance at a competition, you unwittingly find yourself a prisoner of what is happening in dance now. Whether you like it or not. Because if you want to get results, you have to work on those priorities that are in demand today. Why did we give up tournaments? We always felt like we were trying to please someone. And this brings not pleasure, but constant stress. nine0003

Regardless of the results, it should be noted that you have always been very loved by the audience...

Denis: This is an inner enthusiasm, and it remains. At first, we were successful only because of our inner enthusiasm, the desire to dance, the desire to please the public. It's not just about charisma, it's about a sincere attitude to dance.

We came to Moscow to dance. When we began to study dance in more depth (due to the fact that we are very disciplined, I am a very disciplined person), the understanding gradually came that not only enthusiasm is important in dancing, but also knowledge. nine0003

Denis, you have been dancing with your sister for a long time, now you are dancing with your wife. I understand that this is not an easy question, but these are quite different states in dance. ..

Denis: When Ksenya and I started demonstrating a quality dance, we didn't think that we were brother and sister. It's like in the theater: when we dance, we enter into the image. And how well the actors play, how well they are perceived by the audience. We tried to approach dancing very professionally: we danced with Ksenya literally up to millimeters. nine0003

When we paired up with Masha, despite the fact that we already had a personal relationship, the approach did not change. It just became easier for us to show on the floor\"man \" and\"woman \". Rumba in particular is danced in a completely different way, naturally. You don't lie, you don't pretend, you can snuggle up to your partner, merge with the music, merge with the person. These are very subtle points.

How long have you known Maria?

Denis: Maria and I have known each other for four years. And we have a very interesting story with Maria...

Maria: We met in a night club. We came there with a friend, and Denis with his friend, Yan Galperin. And, although the dancers usually know each other, Denis and I have never met. I never thought that we would meet like this...

Denis: To be honest, I didn't even understand that these girls were related to dancing. I just saw them, and I said to Jan: \"Look how beautiful the girls are!\". And Yang says: \"So these are ours, Dynamo, let me introduce you?\"0003

Maria: I had just arrived from Norway and I wasn't sure if I would continue dancing. And then Denis appeared, who said: \"Don't worry, you will dance\".

Denis: I also want to say a big thank you to Masha. For her patience. Because, despite the fact that she speaks of me so flatteringly now, it is not always easy with me. Masha must be given credit. It gives me the opportunity to be a man: to make decisions, to take responsibility. A woman must yield to a man, and Masha understands this...

Maria: Not always (laughs).

Denis: Not always, of course... (smiles). But I feel like a man. The responsibility lies with me, because my woman gives me this opportunity.

Maria: We are quite different, and that is probably why we are together. But it seems to me that we have the main thing - understanding, and we are trying to somehow complement each other ...

And who are you according to the sign of the Zodiac?

Maria: I am a Taurus, Denis is a Pisces. nine0003

Denis: Although I would not say that my zodiac sign is Pisces.

Maria: By the way, Denis' father is Pisces, and his mother is Taurus. And I'm not only a Taurus, I was also born in the year of the Ox. Stubborn to the point of horror!

Denis: Stubborn (Denis agrees). She needs to be convinced first.

Maria: But Denis somehow succeeds, and in the end we always find a common language. We understand each other. Denis and I even have our own language in which we communicate...

Can you name a few words?

Denis: (Laughing) They won't understand us. We have such a ... Martian language.

Let's talk a little more about the personal. How did Denis propose to you?

Maria: It was February 14th. Denis called me to my favorite restaurant "Turandot". And it was very solemn: he took out a ring and asked: well, get down on one knee? I say: well, don't, we're in a restaurant.

I didn't even expect. No, of course, I was ready for this, because Denis came to my parents to get married. But I didn't answer right away. I had to think (laughs). nine0003

Denis: That's how it was. And then, on September 19, there was a wedding. We called 80 people: relatives, dancers. I think we had quite a lot of fun.

Maria: The wedding really went off warmly and amicably. Kirill Andreev from \"Ivanushki\" came to us, gave us a gift for old friendship - he sang.

And then you went on your honeymoon...

Denis: We got a funny story about the honeymoon. We danced the "World Cup" in the Kremlin, and on the same day we were supposed to fly to the Maldives at night. The ticket was number one. We are dancing calmly in the Kremlin on the 31st, and suddenly we realize that we will fly not on the first, but on the 31st at night! In general, at eight we were still on the floor, and at half past one we already had a plane. nine0003

Maria: We danced the tournament and thought: will we enter or not enter the next round, will we miss the plane or not? We did. The holiday turned out to be very beautiful. The Maldives is just a fairy tale. Five days we were left only to ourselves, we enjoyed each other. Well, the rest of the days the parties have already begun. It was very cool!

Now that you have completed your competitive career, how do you see your life?

Maria: We continue to develop. We want to improve the dance, improve. nine0003

Denis: We have finished our competitive career, but we haven't finished dancing. We announced our retirement, and the next day we were already in the hall. Now the series of projects \"Dancing with the Stars\" is going on, and I will definitely participate there.

What about Maria?

Maria: I'll try too. Last time, I also wanted to try, but Denis said that if I participate, we simply won’t have time to prepare for the competition.

Denis, it just so happened that on the project \"Dancing with the Stars\" you came across not the simplest partners... . I don't know who else could teach them the way Denis did. ..

Denis: The learning process is like a challenge for me. I need to teach a person in a short amount of time. At this point, I don't have a question whether he danced or didn't dance. I have to teach this man how to dance in a week: get him on his feet, make a "product". And this process has always been very stimulating for me. This gave me a lot of pleasure. Because in the case when time is short, it is very important to choose the right teaching method, to make a person dance easily, so that it brings him joy. nine0003

Is there a competitive spirit in Dancing with the Stars?

Denis: Of course, there is. Rivalry, in a good sense rivalry, stimulated everyone. It was a rivalry just at the level where you want to please your opponent - healthy competition. Such competition, by the way, used to be in the dance world: when we tried to please our rivals, show something new, surprise with something - a new movement, a trick.

"Dancing with the Stars" is often referred to as Pro-Am.
