Synopsis

Dreams and futures are on the line as Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin) and her friends enter their final year at the Academy and compete against each other for one of the coveted National Ballet Company contracts up for grabs.

It will be the ultimate physical and emotional endurance test for Tara, Abigail (Dena Kaplan), Grace (Isabel Durant), Christian (Jordan Rodrigues), Ben (Thomas Lacey) and Ollie (Keiynan Lonsdale) as they complete third year, with the Company watching their every move.

During their final year, the friends are thrown into a spin when the Company requires three students for fill-in spots for their corps de ballet. They'll also get to experience what life is like as a dancer on a professional tour when they head out on the Third Year Tour, performing in regional and remote centres around Australia. And before they know it, it's graduation day and the life-changing interview with the Company.

All this as well as dealing with self doubt, reality checks, romance ups-and-downs, rivalry between mates, and digging deep to give it everything they've got. It's the year the friends learn that risking everything, failing spectacularly, and then starting again, is how you become extraordinary.

This is the most nail-biting year yet and everyone will be shocked by who is offered a contract, who turns one down, who ultimately gets their dream, and who has to find another.

The revered and iconic Barry Otto (Utopia Girls, The Jesters), Jessica Mauboy (Australian Idol, Bran Nue Dae, The Sapphires), Alyssa McClelland (Home and Away, East West 101, Canal Road), David Woodley (Spartacus -Gods of The Area, Cops L. A.C), Sean Keenan (Lockie Leonard, Puberty Blues), Andrew Lees (The Pacific, Rescue), and Richard Brancatisano (Terminales, Reef Doctors) all make guest appearances in this series.

ALPHA reader: 'Dance Academy' - TV series

I have said it before and I’ll say it again - it’s very rare that I blog about anything other than books. So when I make an exception to this rule, you can guess that I have a new (worthy) obsession to spruik.

My new exceptional obsession is the Australian ABC3 teen drama, ‘Dance Academy’. To be fair, I am jumping on this band-wagon way too late. The first season aired in Australia in 2010, followed by a year-long gap when the show’s creators didn’t know if it would be picked up for a second season . . . which it (thankfully) was, airing this year between March and April. There are 26 episodes in a season, and the last one for 2012 aired on April 24. And, yes, a third season has been commissioned (no word on whether or not there will be another year-long gap between season 2 and 3, making for a 2014 release?).

The show follows fifteen-year-old country ballerina, Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin) whose love of dance stems from a dream of flying. Tara gets one step closer to her dream when she is accepted into Sydney’s prestigious National Dance Academy. . .  but it doesn’t take long before Tara realizes that loving dance isn’t the same as being a good dancer.

Tara’s technique is not where it needs to be, and her fellow students at the Academy are cut-throat, with their eye on becoming principal dancers by the end of their three years. In her first week at the Academy, Tara is given the nickname ‘training bra’ by scholarship kid Christian Reed (Jordan Rodrigues) after an embarrassing changing-room incident with the beautiful Ethan Karamakov (Tim Pocock) who happens to be the half-son of an infamous Australian prima-ballerina and choreographer. Tara’s roommate is Abigail Armstrong (Dena Kaplan) the best and most ruthless first year dancer at the academy, and the one with the biggest grudge against ‘country bumpkin’, Tara.

Tara is ranked lowest in all of her dance classes and her teacher, the cold-blooded Miss Raine (Tara Morice) lets her know that she has a long way to go. . .  But Tara got into the Academy because she has something that no dancer can learn – she puts her heart and soul into every pointe and pirouette. She dances from the heart.

There are bright spots in Tara’s new life. Like Ethan’s half-sister, Kat Karamakov (Alicia Banit) a bubbly, bright and begrudgingly good dancer who struggles to be one of the ‘betty bunheads’. Kat’s best friend is Samuel ‘Sammy’ Lieberman (Tom Green) string-bean with a heart of gold, who is attending the Academy without his father’s support.

Season one of ‘Dance Academy’ follows Tara and her friends through the highs and lows of first year. Second season shows the gang return for second year, and adds goofball Ben Tickle (Thomas Lacey) to the crew, as well as new prima mean-girl in Grace Whitney (Issi Durant).

‘Dance Academy’ is phenomenal. Created by Samantha Strauss and Joanna Werner, it is a fantastic series that combines a coming-of-age story with all the requisite heartbreak, love triangles and hiccups, with the backdrop of a competitive creative environment.

The show is shot in the heart of Sydney, literally. The National Dance Academy is situated near Circular Quay, while the boarding school lies in The Rocks (the most beautiful and expensive area of the city). There are lots of panning shots of the Harbour Bridge, and especially in second season the Opera House becomes the stage for a worldwide dance competition, the Prix de Fontayne.

I also love the show because it has a great, diverse cast. When so many Australian shows are lacking ethnic diversity in their casts, ‘Dance Academy’ shows a far truer Australian melting-pot and is more interesting for it. But the diversity is also in the storylines explored – the show had a wonderful plot about Sammy being attracted to his male roommate, Christian . . .  this plot, in particular, was handled beautifully with no over-dramatizing; it was treated as the coming-of-age it was, grounded in reality and with little flamboyance some shows sometimes want to give the ‘coming out’ storyline.

Other heavy issues have been touched on – such as eating disorders and bullying (in the form of teacher/student, to make for an especially interesting change). And, of course, the complications of love and relationships are also consistently touched on. From liking your best friend’s brother, to liking your best friend’s ex. First season has a mini love-triangle between Tara, Christian and Ethan while second season changes shape to explore a Kat/Christian/Tara love complication. The romantic up’s and down’s of these characters are a real draw-card for fans, and the writers do a brilliant job of spreading the drama out across 26, half-hour episodes. But my favourite couplings have been Sammy’s – the character with the most interesting and diverse love background, I have most enjoyed his romantic storylines.

I can’t go past a review of ‘Dance Academy’ without at least touching on the dancing in the show (even though I must confess, I have the dance skills of a one-legged robot). The choreography is beautiful, and tells a story in itself. From Tara’s obsession with ‘The Red Shoes’, to Sammy’s explosively heartbreaking season two solo, performed to the Jezabel’s ‘She’s So Hard’. The actors do a remarkable job, and the choreography is so good that while watching an episode I do find my feet pointing and hips shaking. God, I wish I could dance.

I fell into obsession watching the first season of ‘Dance Academy’, but it was really the second season that cemented this show as something truly remarkable for me. The second season storyline takes a dramatic and heart-wrenching twist towards the end. I refuse to give anything away, but save to say the writers outdid themselves and the actors broke my heart while watching a breathtakingly sad story unfold.

‘Dance Academy’ is one of the best Australian shows I have had the pleasure of watching in recent years. It’s a little bit ‘Centre Stage’ crossed with ‘Heartbreak High’, and with stories and dialogue that would do Aussie YA proud. The actors are phenomenal, the choreography sublime and I am happily addicted. For curious international’s, I believe ‘Dance Academy’ episodes can be downloaded on iTunes and through Amazon (don’t hesitate – just watch and get on the bandwagon!).

Therefore, the television series "Dance Academy" (actors and their roles will be listed below) deserves special attention. nine0003

The main character of the television series - fifteen-year-old Tara - grew up on a farm in the Australian outback. While still a very young girl, she began to dance and dreamed of becoming a famous dancer. After entering the National Academy of Dance, the naive and romantic girl was sure that all the difficulties were behind her, and a wonderful and exciting life lay ahead. Very soon, Tara realized that the trials were just beginning. At the academy, intrigue and rivalry awaited her, but love, friendship and dancing saved her. nine0003

The protagonist of the television series Tara is played by a young Australian actress Xenia Goodwin. Work in the TV project was the beginning of Goodwin's acting career, and in 2015 she got the leading female role in the comedy Cut, Pick. nine0003

The half-brother Etan Karamakov, a handsome man and heartthrob, who is in love with almost all the girls of the academy, including her friend Tara, does not add calmness. nine0003

Kat is played by Alicia Benet, who is a master of the art of dance, like the other actors involved in the series. "Dance Academy" is not the first television project of Alicia Benet. The actress played a minor role in three seasons of the 2006 series Neighbors. And also in the first season of the series "Very Hot Summer" (2007). Since 2010, she has been the host of the TV show on ABC3.

The role of Sammy went to dancer and actor Thomas Green. After the role of Kip in the television series "Camp" gained popularity, like other actors involved in the project. Dance Academy marked a new milestone for Thomas in his acting career, and in 2015 he was cast as the male lead in Down the River. nine0003

Christian Ried

A guy with a difficult fate, after the death of his mother, he withdrew into himself and constantly got into trouble. Became friends with Ethan and Sammy. Love for Tara changes him.

The role of Christian was played by Jordan Rodriguez. This Australian actor, singer and dancer is best known for his role as young Simba in the musical The Lion King.

In conclusion, it should be added that all three seasons of the series turned out to be very bright and eventful, so it is difficult to list all the interesting characters. In addition, the shooting of a feature film based on the popular series has begun. The same actors will be involved in it. Dance Academy: The Return is scheduled for release in March 2017. nine0003

An explanation of the ending and what happens in Season 4

On June 22, Netflix released all 10 episodes of Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy based on comic books by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba. The Hargreaves are once again faced with the threat of the apocalypse - this time on an even larger scale. The ending turned out to be the strangest in the entire series. We analyze what happened in season 3 of The Umbrella Academy and what effect these events will have on the characters.

Still from season 3 of The Umbrella Academy (2022)

At the end of Season 2, the Hargreaves prevented the end of the world and returned to their own time. But at home, a surprise awaited them. Sir Reginald Hargreaves (Colm Feore), after meeting future children in the past, decided that they were nothing but problems - and created the Sparrow Academy instead of the Umbrella Academy. The team included other superhumans who were born to non-pregnant women on October 1, 1989. From the previous composition, Ben (Justin H. Min) remained, because in the past the hero as a ghost was invisible.

As part of their introduction, the Umbrella Academy and the Sparrow Academy have a dance battle. Okay, in fact, the incendiary dances were in the head of Diego (David Castaneda) - this is the effect of a hallucinogenic substance that Jamie (Kazzi David) sprinkles. After losing a real-life battle, the Umbrella members have to flee their own home. However, Sparrow and Umbrella soon have a common problem. Due to time travel, a paradox occurred that led to the creation of the kugelblitz. And this semblance of a black hole consisting of energy is about to swallow the universe ... nine0003

A still from the 3rd season of The Umbrella Academy (2022)

The Umbrella Academy has remained full of crazy action-packed entertainment with exciting and unexpected plot twists. At the start of season 3, it stalls. The first two episodes came out chaotic and crumpled. Touching moments lack dramatic intensity. The characters themselves do not take the threat looming over them seriously, and therefore the audience does not feel the danger - you simply do not feel stress. nine0003

However, from episode 3, The Umbrella Academy accelerates and turns out to be wild in a good way. Robot Mama (Jordan Claire Robbins) becomes a religious fanatic, Lila Pitts (Ritu Eriya) has a grown child, good-natured Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) becomes very violent, and Reginald gives Klaus (Robert Sheehan) a cute ball game - on the track with machines. To the heap - terrible armored samurai, under whose armor cockroaches run. Frost on the skin from these guys. The stakes are raised as the world is literally collapsing under the feet of the Hargreaves. I can't believe that the heroes can somehow fix the situation. nine0003

Against the backdrop of a collapsing universe, the heroes quarrel, get closer, get to know each other from new sides and pump their superpowers. The characters show new qualities and change a lot as the story progresses. Particularly curious is how much Reginald opened up through communication with Klaus. However, the cold-blooded, but deep in his soul kind dad remained a controversial mystery man.

Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy does not immediately manage to lure into the maelstrom of events and convince the viewer that the fireball is serious. However, episode after episode, the story is more and more captivating and makes you keep an eye on what is happening. By the grand finale, you are already worried about the heroes more than ever before. nine0003

Ending explanation

What is "Oblivion"

A scene from The Umbrella Academy Season 3 (2022)

The Hargreaves settled in the Obsidian Hotel, which was built by Reginald. Inside the building there is a portal to an alternative version of the hotel - "Oblivion". "Oblivion" turned out to be a mechanism constructed by the being that created the universe. The mechanism can restart the universe in the event of a catastrophe.

Reginald teamed up with Allison to persuade the rest of the Hargreaves to activate the mechanism - to do this, seven heroes need to stand on the marks in the floor. Reginald asked Allison not to participate in the activation. Apparently, because of the agreement with Allison, he did not want her to suffer. nine0003

The mechanism activated and Reginald began entering data into the device that appeared. The mechanism gradually sucked life energy out of the superheroes, so Allison killed Reginald, and then still pressed the restart button.

Reginald obviously intended not only to save the universe, but also to carry out some secret mission of his own. The alien lived in the world for many years - who knows what secrets he hid. Allison was able to restart the universe even after the rest of the Hargreaves were disconnected from the machine. This means that it was not necessary to pump out all the vitality from them. Perhaps Reginald was also going to get to the creator of the universe. nine0003

One reason for Reginald's actions is known for sure - we will analyze it further.

Where did the Hargreaves go?

A scene from The Umbrella Academy Season 3 (2022)

After the universe was restarted, Diego, Lila, Klaus, Ben, Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) and Victor (Elliot Paige) - formerly Vanya - found themselves in a new reality . They were joined by a revived Luther (Tom Hopper) - he, like Klaus, was killed by Reginald, only he himself rose from the dead. The heroes lost their powers, and Luther also gained the appearance of a normal person. nine0003

It can be assumed that the restart of the universe completely rewrote history. On October 1, 1989, superchildren were born thanks to alien dust, but this substance could be taken away by someone - for example, Reginald, who is alive and well in the new reality. Or the mechanism "sucked" the powers of the Hargreaves - and Luther lost them after being reborn.

What a woman with Reginald

Scene from The Umbrella Academy Season 2 (2020)

In the new timeline, Reginald founded a financial company. In the finale of episode 10, the hero, along with a mysterious elderly woman, looks out the window in the building of the organization. This is Abigail Hargreaves, the deceased wife of the hero, whose body, frozen in a cryogenic chamber, rested on the moon. nine0003

Reginald wanted to restart the timeline in order to revive his wife. Maybe that's one of the reasons. Allison interrupted the mechanism's activation and saved the rest of the Hargreaves. However, Reginald implemented the plan - perhaps partially.

What happened to Allison

Still from The Umbrella Academy Season 3 (2022)

Allison pressed the restart button and then separated from the group. The heroine took a taxi home and was reunited with her daughter. By some miracle, Raymond Chestnut (Yusuf Gatewood) from 1960s. Probably, Allison did not survive contact with the device and ended up in that other world where Klaus hung out.

Luther left the world of the dead. It remains to be hoped that Allison will be able to get out into the real world. However, in episode 10 there is no unequivocal confirmation that the heroine died. Raymond may have traveled to the future. Or the device in "Oblivion" adjusted to Allison's desires to return her daughter and husband. Since Allison's powers have increased in season 3 and now she does not have to say "I heard a rumor that..." to influence other people, she could "wish" a new reality herself.

Where did the Sparrow go?

A scene from The Umbrella Academy Season 3 (2022)

Only Ben and Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), who married Luther, survived from Sparrow's final battle. After the reboot, only Ben remained with Umbrella. Apparently, this is due to the fact that Ben was on the team before, but Sloane was not. nine0003

In the new reality, Sparrow could be resurrected - as was Reginald. Maybe they were transferred to past families. Sloane, Jamie, Marcus (Justin Cornwell), Faye (Britney Oldford), Alphonso (Jake Epstein) and Christopher's telekinetic cube may return.

Who is Christopher

Scene from The Umbrella Academy Season 3 (2022)

Christopher is a levitating cube that can fire energy beams. He was brought up as a full member of the Hargreaves family. Most likely, Christopher is an alien. Gold dust could penetrate not only to Earth, but also to one of the other planets from which Reginald took Christopher. nine0003

Superchildren were born to 43 women on Earth. However, in the reality of season 3, only 16 women gave birth to unusual children. Harlan Cooper (Callum Keith Rennie), after the death of his mother Cissy (Marin Ireland), released an energy wave that accidentally killed the mothers of the main characters, preventing the children from being born. The outbreak could affect almost all mothers, which is why Reginald decided to look beyond the Earth.

Maybe Christopher was originally human. Suddenly, the hero suffered after an experiment to improve abilities - like Luther. nine0003

Still from The Umbrella Academy Season 3 (2022)

The post-credits scene showed Ben on the Seoul subway. Season 3 just started with the scene where Ben's mother gives birth to him on the subway. Most likely, this is the third version of Ben, even with a different name. Since Reginald didn't adopt Ben, he might not have the strength - overwhelmed by lack of training. Or alien dust was taken from the alternative Ben - Reginald himself could well have done this.

A still from season 3 of The Umbrella Academy (2022)

In season 4, the characters will live in a new reality without superpowers. Luther will try to find Sloane - the heroine may not remember him. Diego and Laila will be able to create a normal family - but it is not a fact that after the restart, Laila remained pregnant. At some point, the Hargreaves may try to regain their powers.
