How to emote in Fortnite

Fortnite has great in-game mechanics that make each match a different experience. The gun and build fights can change heavily depending on where the circle closes on the map, but the banter between the players rarely changes.

If you’ve just started unlocking dances and emotes, it may be challenging to figure out you can use them during a match. Here’s everything you need to know about using emotes in Fortnite.

Make sure that you have emotes equipped on

  3. Press PLACE to place device immediately, or drag it to QUICK ACCESS PANEL to place it later.

But if you study the question, it becomes clear that in fact there is a story in the game - and what else! It's just that it's not so easy to find out. We tell you how cataclysms, aliens and "royal battles" coexist in the world of Fortnite.


In the footsteps of Dark Souls

Ten years ago, Japanese game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki released Demon Souls, which (literally) turned the industry around. It had many revolutionary mechanics, but perhaps the main innovation was the unusual storytelling.

Miyazaki generally abandoned the traditional means of revealing the plot: in his games there are almost no screensavers and dialogues. Instead, there are scraps of information that are hidden in the descriptions of hundreds of items, as well as a complex narrative through the design of the levels themselves. Creating such an information-rich universe is extremely difficult, but it is precisely this - the most "playful" way to tell stories. The same method was used by Epic Games.

As in Dark Souls, the history of the world of Fortnite cannot be found in the opening cutscene. Instead, fans need to stare at loading screens, read descriptions of various skins, and carefully explore the fast-paced island. It does not hurt to go through the Save the World story campaign.

The story of Fortnite is all the more interesting because it is still not finished, unlike most of the ideological heirs of the Souls series. Each season of the game is a new chapter in this story, the ending of which no one knows so far. The only problem here is that there is no official guidebook with the lore of the game, and therefore, technically, all the lore is fan guessing. However, the developers have hinted more than once that Fortnite fans are moving in the right direction, and therefore it's time for us to figure everything out.

Saving the world is not an easy task

The story of the Fortnite universe begins with the Save the World co-op campaign, which was the main focus of Epic Games in the beginning. The game was released two months before the release of the "royal battle", but then the company's priorities changed - the Save the World plot was not completed. However, the available chapters are enough to understand the plot.

The story begins with a huge storm approaching Earth that wipes 98% of the population. It would seem that the situation is frankly unpromising. But soon, Huskies emerge from the cataclysm - not dogs, but zombie-like monsters that take over the devastated world.

In the midst of such an apocalyptic landscape, the protagonist of the game comes to his senses, who will lead the base of survivors. In the course of the story, he successfully resists the storm, putting up "shields" against it - special structures that create a protective dome for people. In parallel, the hero is trying to figure out why this misfortune happened.

Over time, the protagonist finds the scientist who invented those very "shields", gathers an army of survivors, and in the last story chapter even fights and defeats a huge monster born by the storm - the King of the Storm. The last phrase that the leader of the decisive battle hears before the end of the story: "Looks like you are now the king of the monsters, commander."

Save the World fans are still wondering what that might mean. But the players in the competitive Fortnite were interested in a completely different detail: a huge purple cube remained at the site of the death of the Storm King. Exactly the same artifact a couple of months earlier wreaked havoc on the island of the “royal battle”. It seems that it was at this moment that the universes of the two regimes merged together.

A brilliant find

Let's forget about Save the World for the moment and focus on Battle Royale. The development of the plot in it takes place in seasons, and therefore the entire timeline is conveniently divided into clear segments. We will not pay attention to the first two: various tests and skins were added to the game with them, but they did not affect the Fortnite universe.

Everything changed in the third season. At first, it was no different from the previous ones, but on March 20 - a month after the release of the next pass - users suddenly noticed a bright dot in the sky of the game, which was increasing in size every day. Such global events are the norm for various MMORPGs, but this has never been done in the "royal battles" before.

Over time, telescopes appeared all over the map, and various hints in the game files as to what would happen next. One of the users decided to dig deeper: he made a spectrogram of the sound of the flight of a space object and got an unexpected result - a frame-by-frame breakdown of the Take the L dance.

Tilted Towers. Gravity stones appeared in the places where the object fell - strange objects, when activated, the hero jumped higher. Thus began the era of events in Fortnite.

Aliens from Planet Earth

In addition to stones, Epic Games also added the first story skin, The Visitor, which could be obtained by completing challenges. Formally, this is just a skin that everyone can try on. However, the character himself is very important to the universe of the game. All further events are the consequences of his appearance in the world of Fortnite.

The alien came to Earth in the same meteorite, which, apparently, was a spaceship. With him, he brought gravity stones, which at first seemed to many a funny, but pointless innovation in the game. Gameplay artifacts gave only minor bonuses for the participants of the "royal battle", but from a plot point of view, they were of much greater value - at least for The Visitor himself.

With their help, the alien guest was able to turn a fake rocket from a film set into a real one, thus starting a long chain of events. This is hinted at by the loading screen, where you can see how The Visitor makes some changes to his future vehicle.

Even those who don't play Fortnite heard what happened next. The rocket took off and ripped apart the very texture of reality. Mysterious rifts began to appear throughout the map, which, as it soon became clear, connected the game universe with the real world (as well as a dozen other realities).

All the sounds of the emerging faults were also deciphered on the spectrogram, this time getting skulls and location coordinates. In the marked places, mystical events soon began to occur: artifacts from antiquity began to appear somewhere, in other points, objects, on the contrary, disappeared. Soon they were discovered, however, already in our universe.

The developers of the game really brought items from Fortnite to the real world: a huge burger from a virtual diner was found in the Californian desert, and llamas, one of the recognizable symbols of the game, began to be noticed in European cities.

The epic with the rifts ended with the appearance of a huge purple cube, which for some reason received from Epic Games and the players the not too formidable name Kevin. After that, all the cracks in the sky closed, and the developers temporarily stopped flirting with the ARG format - all further events so far took place only inside Fortnite.

ARG - literally "alternate reality game". This is a fictional story, the events of which players will learn through the real world. Developers can hide notes in cities, force players to decrypt various files, and so on. An important principle of any ARG is that participants must do everything with a straight face and not mention that this is just a game. Often this format is used in advertising projects. For example, this is how the LOST series was promoted (see the games Lost Experience and FIND815).

The era of cataclysms

The cube again slightly changed the rules of Fortnite - it restored ammo and armor to all players nearby. This had little effect on the Royal Battle. But soon Kevin began to travel around the map and destroy local attractions.

Why Kevin appeared in the game and what it meant at all is a mystery. It is obvious from the animation of his "birth" that he is an alien from another universe. But why he closed all the faults, users have not been able to find out.

It soon turned out that the cube did not disappear from the game without a trace. A couple of months later, he reappeared in Fortnite, but already in Save the World. To find him, you must complete the entire storyline - then Kevin will appear in the lake after the death of the Storm King.

In the Battle Royale, Kevin's path also ended in the lake. At the end of the sixth season, the cube hovered above the surface of the water and exploded, throwing all the players into hyperspace. The event caused such a stir that more than a million people watched its broadcasts on Twitch - an absolute record for the service.

But what did the explosion of the cube mean for the world of Fortnite? Rebalancing: Kevin closed all the rifts, removed artifacts from other worlds from the game's universe, and eventually withdrew himself. During the jump into hyperspace, a kind of butterfly appeared before the eyes of the players, consisting entirely of light, is it not a symbol of peace?

But peace and tranquility did not last long. It seems that the destruction of Kevin somehow affected the local climate: soon a glacier collided with the island, in which players were in for a surprise - a frozen castle with secrets inside.

At first, it was ice-bound, but over time, Fortnite fans have gained access to more and more rooms. The key finds in them are frozen eggs (presumably dragon eggs), fragments of the same meteorite from the beginning of the plot, an unknown prisoner and an ice sphere in which a monster called the Ice King could be seen through a weapon sight.

The eggs soon disappeared somewhere, and the awakening of the King became the center of the next epic event, which again briefly reconciled the players. Before their eyes, the world was covered with ice, and frozen monsters appeared on the icy glades.

But why did the Ice King come to the world of Fortnite? It looks like to reassemble Kevin. After all, it is his reduced copy that the creature holds in his hand.

The prisoner mentioned above also did not go unnoticed. During the warming, he escaped and, judging by the loading screens, it took a long time to come to his senses. However, now he has gained strength and is ready to compete with the Ice King in the fight for cube fragments.

When the fugitive broke free, earthquakes and cracks began to appear throughout the world of Fortnite - no longer in the sky, but on the ground. The trailer for the eighth season showed that the former prisoner of the castle is really responsible for this. In the video, he jumps out of the mouth of the volcano and fights with the players and the Ice King for the contents of the pirate chest. Looking forward to new events?

Fortnite: Through the Universes

Among the mass of questions that fans of the game discuss, one still stands apart: how are the universes of the two Fortnite modes connected? There is still no answer to it. Once upon a time, the developers wrote in plain text: the events of Save the World and the Battle Royale take place in different universes. But it was the universes that were united by a series of events about Kevin! And the cube itself also appeared in two game modes not by chance.

However, fans have their own explanation for the existence of Fortnite Battle Royale: the entire island is a training ground for the survivors that the hero Save the World has collected. The key detail that all supporters of such a theory refer to is the absence of deaths in the Royal Battle.

Fortnite characters don't die. When the player takes critical damage, the machine teleports them to the main menu (i.e., presumably the training base). In Battle Royale, there is not even the word “death” itself - heroes are “disabled”, but not killed.

It is no coincidence that this idea is placed in a separate chapter: there are too many inconsistencies in it. Why do all cataclysms happen here? How long will the "royal battle" go on? What is going on in the main world at this time? Everything indicates that right now the developers are actively working to bring the whole story to a common denominator.
