A young Moscow journalist Ksenia Maksimova, who is practicing on the Deutsche Welle, attended a lesson with coach Helen Varzamis with a voice recorder. We will call the transmission Bauchtanz in K ö ln (belly dance in Cologne).

“A former neighbor (ein früherer Nachbar) of my studio (meines Studios), says the owner of the studio, Ellen Varzamis, to a Moscow journalist, he had an architect's office there (hatte da ein Architektenbüro), was very interested in my studies (ist auf meinen Unterricht neugierig geworden). Ein früherer Nachbar meines Studios, der da ein Architektenbüro hatte, (war) ist ganz neugierig auf meinen Unterricht geworden, weil er gesagt hat: „Ich sehe da immer so viele Frauen reingehen, so ein bisschen reinschlürfen und gebeugt, und die kommen raus aufgerichtet, strahlend. Was machst du da? - Und, ach Gott, ja, komm doch mal vorbei und mach mal mit, dann siehst du, was ich mache.

In the hall where classes are held, the atmosphere of the East reigns. Mirrors. Curtains. The age of the students is from sixteen to seventy. Why do they go here? The slender, slightly shy Monika works out for her own pleasure (macht das aus Spaß), to move more (um sich zu bewegen) and to do gymnastics (um Gymnastik zu machen).

Ja, ich mache das eigentlich aus Spaß, um mich zu bewegen und halt um Gymnastik zu machen.

Andrea also started (hat angefangen) just for the pleasure of moving (aus Spaß an der Bewegung), because she finds belly dancing beautiful (findet den Tanz schön). “And where did you see him (wo hast du das gesehen)?” asks Ksenia Maksimova. Andrea cannot say for sure (kann nicht genau sagen). There was a time (es gab mal so ne Zeit) when the discotheques (in Diskos) here in Germany played a lot of oriental-style tunes (orientalisch angehauchte Lieder). Then the thought occurred to her (ihr ist die Idee gekommen) that this (eigentlich) could really be learned (könnte man richtig lernen).

Ich hab's angefangen einfach aus Spaß an der Bewegung. Weil ich's einen schönen Tanz finde. – Wo hast du das gesehen? - Wo ich's gesehen hab? Das kann ich gar nicht so genau sagen. Es gab mal so ne Zeit, als in Diskos hier in Deutschland viele orientalisch angehauchte Lieder liefen. Da ist mir dann so die Idea gekommen, dass man das eigentlich auch richtig lernen könnte.

Has Andrea tried any of these movements (was von dien Bewegungen zu benutzen) somewhere in discotheques (irgendwo auf Diskos). Andrea smiles: “Yes, you use the elements from belly dance (Elemente aus dem Bauchtanz) automatically (benutzt man automatisch).

Hast du schon mal versucht irgendwo auf Diskos, was von diesen Bewegungen zu benutzen sozusagen? – Ja, man benutzt schon automatisch dann auch Elemente aus dem Bauchtanz mit.

The hardest part (das Schwierigste), says Andrea, is to separate (zu trennen) the movements of the hips (die Hüftbewegungen) and the movements of the shoulders (die Schulterbewegungen). So that everything does not shake together (dass nicht alles mitwackelt).

Und was war das Schwierigste? – Das Schwierigste ist die Hüft- und die Schulterbewegungen zu trennen, dass nicht alles immer mitwackelt.

Andrea doesn't want to talk about the general philosophy of dance (die ganze Philosophie des Tanzes). A difficult question (schwierige Frage). She dances for the sake of the process itself (um des Tanzens willen). And for three years already (seit drei Jahren).

Und was die ganze Philosophie des Tanzes angeht? – Oh je. Schwierige Frage. – Du tanzt nur fur Tanzen? - Ja, ich tanze eigentlich nur um des Tanzens willen. Wie lange machst du das schon? – Seit drei Jahren. Ungefahr.

Margit took up belly dancing (macht den Bauchtanz) only because her friend (eine Freundin) decided to persuade her (wollte überreden). “I have already started (hab schon angefangen) and she is still at home (ist immer noch zu Hause). In addition, Margit noticed that the movement (die Bewegung) was good for her (tut ihr gut). And in general (überhaupt) she loves to dance (tanzt gerne). Dancing recently (noch nicht lange). Three months (seit drei Monaten). It turns out (es klappt) sometimes more (manchmal mehr), sometimes less (manchmal weniger).

Ich mach den Bauchtanz eigentlich nur, weil mich ne Freundin dazu überreden wollte. Und jetzt hab ich schon mal anefangen, und sie ist immer noch zu Hause. Und weil ich gemerkt hab, dass mir die Bewegung sehr gut tut, und weil ich überhaupt gerne tanze. – Wann hast du anefangen? – Ho, noch nicht lange. Ich glaub, seit drei Monaten. Noch nothing lange. – Klappt es? - Manchmal mehr, manchmal weniger.

For the time being, Margit simply wears leggings and wraps a large silk scarf around her hips. But she also enjoys dancing in costumes (mit den Kostümen). Natasha has the most beautiful costume in the group. Red bloomers, sparkling sequins, rhinestones, monista. Natasha speaks Russian. Why did she choose to belly dance? - asks Ksenia Maksimova.

“I just saw a program on TV, and somehow I felt like it. - And how it turns out? - Well, you can look. It turns out, I think. - And what does dance give? - What does it give? First, it relieves stress. Secondly, you feel your body a little better when you start doing it. Femininity is waking up, one might say.

Natasha and Andrea will show what they are capable of at discos. But the second Andrea in the group does not go to discos. She just likes (sie findet schön) oriental music (orientalische Musik). She needed to do something with her back (was für den Rücken tun) to keep it more mobile (beweglicher zu halten) and she also wanted to dance with women (wollte mit Frauen tanzen). That is, specifically in the women's group (speziell in der Frauengruppe). Women, Andrea believes, have a special energy (haben eine besondere Energie) when they are together (sind zusammen).

Trainer Ellen Varzamis summarizes: “Women who come to me (die zu mir kommen) have completely different motivations (ganz unterschiedliche Motivationen). Firstly (zum einen), they consider (finden) this dance to be aesthetic and very beautiful (ästhetisch und sehr schön). Secondly (zum anderen), many women (viele Frauen) come and say (sagen): “OK, belly dancing is a very feminine dance (ist ein sehr weiblicher Tanz). Very feminine movements (sehr weibliche Bewegungen). And I would really like to do something (würde gerne was tun) for my femininity (für meine weibliche Seite).” Others (andere) are sent here (sind hergeschickt worden) by doctors (von Ärzten). Mainly (hauptsächlich) orthopedists (von Orthopäden) or gynecologists (von Gynäkologen) who realized (haben erkannt) that these movements (diese Bewegungen) are good for health (sind gesundheitsfördernd).

Die Frauen, die zu mir kommen, haben ganz unterschiedliche Motivationen. Zum einen sicherlich, weil sie diesen Tanz einfach ästhetisch und sehr schön finden. Zum anderen kommen aber auch viele Frauen, die sagen: „Okay, Bauchtanz ist ein sehr weiblicher Tanz. Sehr weibliche Bewegungen. Und ich würde gerne was fur meine weibliche Seite tun. Andere Frauen wiederum sind hergeschickt worden auch von Ärzten. Also von hauptsächlich Orthopäden oder auch Gynäkologen, die einfach erkannt haben, dass diese Bewegungen gesundheitsfördernd sind.

But... we talked and that's enough. It's time to continue the lesson: feet hip-width apart (Füße hüftbreit). Toes forward (Zehen nach vorne). The knees are relaxed (lockere Knie). The pelvis (das Becken) hangs very heavily (hängt ganz schwer). And imagine (stellt euch vor) that between the buttocks is a tassel (am Steiß ist ein Pinsel) that reaches the floor (reicht bis zum Boden). And you paint with your buttocks (malt mit dem Steiß) a big picture (ein großes Bild) on the floor (auf dem Boden).

OK. Füße hüftbreit. Zehen nach vorne. Locker Knie. Becken hängt ganz schwer. Und stellt euch vor, dass am Steiß ein Pinsel ist, der bis zum Boden reicht, und ihr malt mit dem Steiß ein großes Bild auf dem Boden.

The pelvis (das Becken) moves on (bewegt sich weiter). You place your left hand (legt die linke Hand) on your thigh (auf die Hüfte). The hand accompanies the movements of the pelvis (begleitet die Beckenbewegungen).

Das Becken bewegt sich weiter und ihr legt die linke Hand auf die Hüfte. Und die Hand begleitet die Beckenbewegungen.

The pelvis continues to move (macht immer die Bewegungen weiter), continues (bleibt dabei). The buttocks (der Steiß) hang down very heavily (hängt ganz schwer nach unten).

Ja, das Becken macht immer die Bewegungen weiter und bleibt dabei. Der Steiss hängt ganz schwer nach unten.

The hand (die Hand) moves away (entfernt sich) a little (ein bisschen) from the pelvis (vom Becken), but you still feel (spürt weiter) the connection (die Verbindung). The connection between the palm (Handfläche) and the left thigh (und linker Hüfte).

Dann entfernt sich die Hand ein bisschen vom Becken, aber die Verbindung spürt ihr trotzdem weiter. Die Verbindung zwischen Handfläche und linker Hüfte.
