“People immediately feel fake”: singer Kathy Melua on the work on the new album, quarantine and fame

Posta-Magazine
This autumn, on October 16, the award-winning British musician of Georgian origin, the incomparable and tender Kathy Melua will release a new album. It will also include A Love Like That, the video for which was shot by award-winning director Charlie Lightning, who has worked with Paul McCartney and Liam Gallagher in the past.
In anticipation of the premiere, we asked Kathy about how easy it was to work on the album during the period of global imprisonment, how her work is affected by worldwide recognition, and about why going on stage is like skydiving.
Music helped me escape the reality of the pandemic. When the lockdown started, I was mixing my album. The deadline was inexorably approaching, but I did not like the idea of postponing the release. So I continued to work, and it was an important experience for me. While my father, a doctor, helped patients with COVID-19I hid and worked.
Any time is good for creativity. The main thing is to think positively - it is important for health. Even when things go horribly wrong, I know that by staying positive, I increase my chances of a better outcome, or find solutions to deal with a similar problem in the future.
Making music together and live is magical. I remember watching Laura Marling's live broadcast during quarantine - and I couldn't contain my emotions, it was a very vivid experience - to watch her at a time when all concerts and performances had actually stopped. Now the quarantine in England is not so strict, I just rehearsed for two weeks with the band - we had the task of preparing for the release of the album and performances on the upcoming tour, which can still take place. But now we are waiting for the decision of the authorities to see if we can bring these touring plans to life.
So many great artists I'd love to work with , but if I had to pick just one, I'd say Bob Dylan.
This is not to say that I don't care about other people's opinions at all: there is nothing better than when a person tells you how your work really touched him. And I am not against comparisons: when you are put on a par with someone who has achieved success, it is an honor. By the way, we don't know Robert Smith from The Cure, but I heard that after listening to our version of his song Just Like Heaven, he said that he always wanted to do it in such a slower tempo.
I don't understand the desire to divide music into categories. I've never been prejudiced against certain styles, I love pop music as much as classical, blues and folk. My work is guided by the “experience of listening to music”: I like to think that in the albums I work on, the main thing is to understand what we are creating for the listener at the moment of listening.
My grandma asked me to sing for her in the kitchen when I was 6 years old - and she knew very quickly when my singing was insincere. It has always amazed me that it is immediately noticeable if my concentration and involvement weakened. She always told me to sing from the heart. She taught me to speak Russian.
People are not stupid, they immediately feel false. It is impossible to take your work to the public, put it on the market, if you do not believe in it completely.
Fame both scares and motivates. I was very afraid of the sense of responsibility, in my 20-something years I simply was not ready to be responsible for so many people so that they would have a job. When you have to put out a quality record or performance, it's your obligation to every single person on the team - and that feeling can build up too much pressure. But as I got older, I started to enjoy this pressure more and more, I am grateful for it, because it means that I have to continue to create, work and grow as an artist. That's all I want - to write songs, release records - and do it better every year.
Quality of life is how often a person is in a good mood , by mood I mean the atmosphere that people create by being just themselves. For some people it comes when they have money, others need to have a job or a mission that they are in love with, no matter how much money it brings. For others, a loving family and good friends are most important.
I write slowly. I work with collaborators who help me take my lyrics and musical sketches and put them into song structure. Then I retire and spend a lot of time on words. So in this process there are also quick periods of emotion, and then there is editing, which is a more boring and controlled process.
My favorite song on the new album is the final Remind me to forget. With this album, I wanted to celebrate the artistry of the musicians, as well as celebrate classical recordings and classical songwriters. It also had to become very personal - due to very honest, sincere lyrics.
